combine Garfield (disambiguation) and Garfield (name)?
[edit]I think these two disambiguation pages should be combined, but have no idea how to do it.Jweaver28 (talk) 16:13, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

– There is no clear primary topic here[[1]], while many of the other uses are named after the comic strip, the comic strip comes from the president (although he is a PTM, presidents are commonly known by only their last name) and his name which apparently comes from a lost village in England. There are also quite a lot of other places called "Garfield". Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:48, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. The articles related to the comic have by far more views than any article just called Garfield. Anyone searching for Garfield wants to view this article, it seems pretty obvious. And of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC #2, the cat is known much more worldwide than the shortlived president, hihi. --Quiz shows 20:40, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support per nomination. There are 48 entries at the Garfield (disambiguation) page — far too many to enable a comic strip, originating in one region of the English-speaking world, to become so completely dominant that it should rise above the combined notability of the remaining 47 entries. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 05:01, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support the geo names have meaning for any living in those countries. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:59, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support. The president is just as, if not more, important than the cat. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 12:16, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. I would like to see a Garfield (president) redirect setup for this page, since the low amount of views Garfield (disambiguation) receives tells me very few readers in search of "Garfield" don't want the comic article. The proposed move would likely do little but add a roadblock in the way of readers. Nohomersryan (talk) 14:56, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. On what evidence do we presume that users searching for "Garfield" are generally seeking an obscure 19th century US president? I've crunched some numbers for things that are just named "Garfield" (i.e. excluding any partial title matches), over the past 12 months Garfield has a monthly average of 37,536 views (68.5%) and the related Garfield (character) gets 10,547 views (19.3%); the various settlements, while many, add up to just 4,751 per month (8.7%), and almost half of those are for Garfield, New Jersey. I believe the comic strip clearly meets the primary topic criteria for usage, and while long-term significance is much harder to evaluate, only the name and the aforementioned New Jersey city seem to have any comparable prominence. The number of dab page entries is neither here nor there. These pages are best left where they are. PC78 (talk) 18:35, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose, clear primary topic. —Xezbeth (talk) 07:02, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. If the cartoon isn't the primary topic then the character is: the status quo is fine. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 12:41, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. The nominator's own stats show the comic strip is the primary topic. If readers are looking for it most often, let's keep it easy to find. Calidum 12:49, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- Wait, doesn't his plot show James A. Garfield way above the comic? Are we looking at different things? Dicklyon (talk) 01:05, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. Ribbet32 (talk) 00:46, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support – No primarytopic is a lot more sensible than comic strip as primary. I would also argue against President Garfield as primary. Dicklyon (talk) 01:01, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support. Clear absence of a primary topic in light of not only the president, but also dozens of place names, and several other uses. bd2412 T 03:20, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose - proposed Garfield (disambiguation) change. Leave it alone. Imo Garfield the character/comic strip is not the primary topic, there doesn't seem to be a primary topic, the multiplicity of different Garfields indicates to me that the sheer numbers in the group itself is the primary topic (and, anyway, all the places are named for James A. not the cartoon cat). Shearonink (talk) 05:18, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support - changing Garfield to Garfield (comic strip). Shearonink (talk) 05:18, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- It's kind of two different things to me, so I bifurcated my decision. It seems to me that we're not supposed to just make it as easy as possible for just particular anyones to get to their desired information/article, we should be making it as easy as possible for everyone to get to their desired article - splitting my decision would do that. Shearonink (talk) 05:18, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- So if you oppose the first move but support the second, what do you propose to do with the leftover "Garfield" redirect? PC78 (talk) 20:46, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Leave the Garfield (disambiguation) page as is. I suppose make Garfield a redirect to the disambiguation page. Shearonink (talk) 22:18, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- We could do that, but then the next obvious and uncontroversial move would be to put the disambig page at the base name and make the other a redirect, because that's the standard pattern. Dicklyon (talk) 00:03, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

- Oppose per PC78's analysis the comic strip is clearly the primary topic for the term "Garfield". We have moved past the days where we arbitrarily apply higher standards to pop culture / low art. Ivar the Boneful (talk) 06:31, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
- Clearly how? The pageviews are much higher for James A. Garfield, aka President Garfield. Dicklyon (talk) 00:05, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
- But it's a partial title match. What's your evidence that people searching for "Garfield" are looking for the president? PC78 (talk) 08:27, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

- Oppose Setting aside the President, the comic strip would be the clear WP:PTOPIC. I'm inclined to think that only a very tiny fraction of users would type "Garfield" into the search bar and expect to get information about the president. But I would support Nohomersryan's suggestion of setting up a WP:DABTEST, and potentially reopening this discussion pending the results of that experiment. Colin M (talk) 21:35, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. While normally a US president would be a powerful partial title match, President Garfield's 6 month tenure is more of a historical footnote. As others have noted, low number of current hits for the disambig page = the current setup is fine, the comic strip is the primary topic. SnowFire (talk) 22:17, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose on the basis that anything else of note with "Garfield" in the name is only a WP:PTM. The comic strip is clearly the most notable thing with the exact name of "Garfield". Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 09:22, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. Clear primary topic. Unlike many, this particular comic strip is well-known all over the world. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:26, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. Garfield is more than a comic strip, and it is obviously what people search for when they say "Garfield" KingSkyLord (talk) 16:04, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
