Date of birth etc.

[edit]

Han Suyin was probably born not in 1917, but in 1916: http://www.asiawind.com/hakka/hansuyin.htm (in English) http://dikigoros.t35.com/frauen/hansuyin.htm (in German). 19:05, 23 August 2005 62.246.121.217

That evidence is not very strong: "I checked the Chinese lunar calendar and found out that it should be 1916, the year of the dragon, not as all the documents stated 1917", states one site, and the other site - besides expressing profound hatred for Wikipedia ("... deren Betreiber sich anheischig machen, ein "Universal-Lexikon" zu erstellen, indem sie möglichst viele Köche einen Brei anrühren lassen, der dann von irgendwelchen politisch-korrekten Zensoren vollends verdorben wird ..."), linking to pornography and containing racist jibes -, is just way beyond serious research. Their mathematic play with her birthday, combined with the assumption that her father must have been Yi ("Lolo"), is rather dubious.
Maybe fun to read as a polemic diatribe against Han Suyin (and the Chinese people and communism and university students in their first year, etc.), but many of the other "facts" presented are also plainly wrong. I don't think these are reliable sources. Even if we'd come to the conclusion that Han Suyin's statement about her date of birth are contradictory, it seems much more probable to me that she was right about the date and wrong about the circumstances. My House Has Two Doors and Phoenix Harvest

[edit]

I've just purchased a 1980 edition of My House Has Two Doors and it has Phoenix Harvest as Part Two. But you also find it as a separate book for sale on Amazon. It seems to be that they were one book in hardback and two separate books in paperback. Can anyone confirm this? --GwydionM (talk) 17:04, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Does Han Suyin count as Asian-American?

[edit]

She was born in China, had a Belgian mother, trained and qualified as a doctor in England and her three husbands were Chinese, British and Indian. Where is the American connection? --GwydionM (talk) 19:39, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I know only that her work is commonly discussed by academic critics as being Chinese American. For instance, she gets a whole chapter in Asian American autobiographers: a bio-bibliographical critical sourcebook by Guiyou Huang, in Negotiating identities: an introduction to Asian American women's writing by Helena Grice, in Encyclopedia of Asian-American literature by Seiwoong Oh, etc. (all available through Google Books). Apparently she did spend some time living in the states, and even writers as cranky as Frank Chin have considered her one of the truest Asian American writers in the tradition. Good question though--and odd.... Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:56, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've read a few articles about her on the web and I can't find any evidence that she is American in any sense. I think she should be removed from all the American categories. According to this article she is British, but I don't consider it definitive: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-09/23/content_6776974.htm Tweisbach (talk) 15:27, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In her chapter of Asian-American Writers, scholar Amy Ling acknowledges that Han "may not consider [herself] American and [...] may not even have lived any appreciable length of time in the United States." via Google Books Ling also claims that her books have been important to American audiences to be included under the label Asian American. Interesting. It's odd how often she comes up in Asian-American literary reference works without any discussion of her own history in/with America. Aristophanes68 (talk) 16:31, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The best thing to do would be to remove those categories until there are sources that would indicate she belongs in them. He might be part of the reading list for Asian-American literature because she follows related themes, but that doesn't mean the categories apply. I'll go ahead and remove the categories.
