[edit]Are there any sources saying that he is an indie rock musician? I'm listening to the album right now, and it's blues, plain and simple. I might agree that there's also a hint of soul music, but there's nothing indie rock about it. Mayast (talk) 13:35, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

personal life
[edit]So he's written this confusing hit. In the hit, he refers to his lover as "she," but in the video there are two gay lovers who are being persecuted for their sexual orientation. It's not clear whether he's gay; whether the song is about gay people; whether the video was made to be about gay people as an afterthought. At least knowing whether he's gay might help, tho it still would not explain the "she" in the song if he is gay. And if he's not gay, what did the song originally mean to him? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skysong263 (talk • contribs) 20:16, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
- Mean? How about "equality"? Are you saying a straight person can't write a song about the stupidity of violent homophobic bigots and the religions that enable them, without being gay as well? Better tell Macklemore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.101.166.118 (talk) 14:09, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
In this interview, the artist does seem to say that the song references a human female lover. And according to this Reuters piece, breaking up with a girlfriend was part of the inspiration for the song. In the same piece, he seems to imply that he's not gay, but doesn't quite give a clear answer because he says sexual orientation isn't the point of the song. It's about the human experience of love and intimacy, which is not limited by orientation. So it sounds like he's likely straight, but it's impossible to rule out the possibility that he's bi, or even that he's gay (plenty of gay people have opposite-sex partners before figuring their orientation out). In the end, Wikipedia articles are for reporting facts and not for speculating, and he has not made a totally clear statement one way or another.
Regarding interpreting the song, there's no single "correct" interpretation when it comes to art. Exploring and critically examining many different interpretations is a big part of art appreciation. It's more straightforward if "she" is interpreted as a human woman lover, but less concrete interpretations are perfectly valid too. The Catholic Church is traditionally referred to with feminine pronouns, so "she" may at times refer to the Church itself. E.g. "if the heavens ever did speak / she's the last true mouthpiece" can describe the Catholic Church's claim to be the "one true church," with authority to speak for God. Does this mean the speaker still believes this, yet struggles to reconcile it with the hypocrisy he's criticizing? Is the speaker saying this with bitter irony, because he sees the claim as an outrageous conceit? Is he torn between both of these possibilities? It's open to interpretation!
I could go on and on about how other lines work in my own interpretation, often involving double-meanings that reflect deeply intertwined and conflicted faith and sexuality by ambiguously or simultaneously refer to both the Church and the human lover – who may or may not themself be a "she". But wiki talk pages aren't for that. My point is just that being open to interpretation and re-interpretation, with every individual having the ability to find something new and personal, is part of what makes art so powerful. So whatever it means to Hozier, what any art "means" is inherently an interactive experience in which every individual gets to participate. --100.8.91.47 (talk) 05:32, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
I think the song is about idolizing a person you're sexually involved with. I think the video was intended to help gay people and isn't directly related to the concept of a sexual relationship being a form of idolatry. Here's an article alleging that Hozier is straight and someone who he has dated https://answersafrica.com/hozier-gay-girlfriend-facts.html Skysong263 (talk) 23:26, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
Pronunciation
[edit]Jvbnbarrios has re-added a pronunciation for the subject's name. Previously he was reverted by Murry1975 and myself on the basis that a Tumblr blog is not a reliable source for that kind of information, per WP:BLPSOURCES. I've explained that. While I know that Tumblr is not a RS in this case, I have no idea if the new source is because I'm not overly familiar with these types of articles. So if it isn't, please discuss here. Otherwise we'll consider the thing done. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 18:23, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Known professionally by his middle name
[edit]Even though it appears in the middle of his name, Hozier is not his middle name. --88.70.190.211 (talk) 13:36, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- Good spot, changed back to the mononym. Murry1975 (talk) 14:14, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hozier-Byrne is a double surname. He doesn't use his middle name often, but he mentioned in a recent interview with Pepper 96.6 (Greek radio in Athens) it's actually John (making his full name Andrew John Hozier-Byrne). If I get the link to the interview or the video clip where he says it, I'll add it as a reference. --181.231.70.243 (talk) 00:28, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Suggestions for Change
[edit]Hello everyone! I'm currently enrolled in a WikiEdu course and was required to find an article on something that I'm passionate about and give some suggestions for change and edit some things. Here are some of my ideas! Feel free to comment on what you're feeling about the article too since I'm a bit new to the whole Wikipedia editing idea.
1) The introduction needs a bit more work. While it's a great little overview is there anything we can add to make it feel more complete?
2) An appearances section could be added to showcase where he's been interviewed and where people can go to see more of him.
3) A running list of his albums and songs needs to be added in a separate section. I understand that we have chart toppers listed along with his awards, but I don't see a section simply listing his music that can be edited for future albums.
4) The 2013-2016 Hozier section could be polished a bit. It's so choppy. Perhaps there's a different way to format it to make things flow better for readers.
Thanks so much! I hope to make one of these edits myself if you don't mind. Feel free to correct me or at least add your own ideas onto this thread. :) -Dwritingfreak (talk) 04:10, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Dwritingfreak: Right now, the article has no restrictions on who can and can't edit it. Some might look at this in a glass-half-empty kind of way and say that's only the case because nobody has vandalized it lately. I like to think that, since it hasn't seen bad behavior in a while, we're hoping to see what sorts of good things new editors can do with it.
- In 1) and 4), you seem to be requesting copy edits or corrections that I strongly encourage you to do yourself. I won't lie: if you make mistakes and a veteran editor catches them, you might get snapped at for it. While we strongly discourage such treatment of new people, you could argue that it's beneficial. Because if your skin is thick enough to withstand random people showing up to scold you for spelling it "Hzoier," you're the sort of person we want to stay for a while. Save your changes periodically in case the power goes out, use edit summaries to explain what you're up to, and watch these little differences combine to form a major improvement.
- Your request in 2) is a bit different. Wikipedia builds articles with the hoped-for end result being a centralized location of all notable, helpful information about the subject. If Hozier says something in an interview that's neat, informative, important, etc., we want to use that interview as a source and find a way to add that information here. The problem with directing people off the website is that we don't want to look like we're promoting something when Wikipedia never deliberately does that. Something like, "Here's a link to an interview at MTV" is frowned upon because there's a concern we're trying to promote MTV. (Ditto for "Here's a link to a live MTV performance.") Instead, let's take Hozier talking in that interview about his experiences growing up, find a way to add that information to our text, and use a link to the interview as the source.
- As for 3), the question boils down to notability. We try to avoid listing deep cuts in discography sections because we don't think people want to scroll past tons of songs to get to the next section. If Hozier has released a song professionally, it's almost guaranteed it's mentioned somewhere. If it's not a hit or a song he plays in concert, it should still be on its album's page. We're careful about adding information on new music, be it songs, albums, collections, or whatever else because the industry is notorious for moving things around on a whim. I think the #5 listing at WP:RUMOUR is what I'm trying to get across.
- Wikipedia has an ongoing project for new editors called the Teahouse. You can go there and ask questions and get them answered in a nonjudgmental way by veteran editors. (I kind of want to go there myself and ask how to edit music charts because I've been here for years and I still have no idea.) So check that out at WP:TEAHOUSE and good luck. Wicken
[edit]Hozier is not a Wicken, Kerry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.172.192.218 (talk) 22:55, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
Hozier was born on St. Patrick's Day. What's wrong with including that in the article.68.195.141.2 (talk) 19:37, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- What relevance does it have to the article? Chaheel Riens (talk) 23:21, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hozier has a close relationship with his Irish roots and he often mentions it in his interviews since that coincidence had an impact in his life. Ratfae (talk) 17:31, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Activism
[edit]Hozier is part of an organisation called Home Sweet Home which provides shelter for homeless people and which took over an office building in Dublin in 2016.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamvardhana (talk • contribs) 10:53, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
political messages in songs
[edit]I added a new section on political messages in his songs. Currently I have info and citations for "Take Me to Church" and "Nina Cried Power." I plan to look for more. --Ame.1772 (talk) 21:19, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Search tag error
[edit]When you search for Hozier, it says he’s a musician and chef. I know the chef part is left over from some vandalization that’s already been fixed in the article, but the search tag hasn’t. I don’t know how to fix it myself, but I just wanted to point it out to see if anyone does. Bencutiostan (talk) 22:09, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
Splitting proposal for discography
[edit]@Onel5969: I propose that the section Hozier (musician)#Discography be split into a separate page called Hozier discography. The content of the current page seems off-topic and this section is large enough to make its own page. GiankM. M (talk) 20:12, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Proposed Removal of Denmark Gaffa Awards
[edit]I propose we delete the section under awards for the two Denmark Gaffa Awards that are currently labeled under Pending. The archived link shows that he was nominated with about 50 others for a large vote, and the short list for 2020 (and winner) didn't feature him. The awards is decided through a fan vote, hence the large amount of nominations. Not sure if this should be kept and 'Pending' should be changed to 'Nominated'. Queenqpawn (talk) 00:06, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- I was just about to leave a message asking why he has a "pending" award from 2020. I think changing the status from "pending" to "nominated" makes a lot of sense! I couldn't find anything that said if he won or not mostly because it was all in Danish. Wolvescantread (talk) 04:56, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Activism - Splitting proposal
[edit]Hozier's work on activism is a big and by adding infos about it I made his main page too big. An admin proposed a split but I am not familiar with that so I opened the discussion here for people who know better than me to decide on that.
In case you agree to split it the earlier version, I don't know how to do it, so someone else will have to step in and do it.
I won't do any more edits on Hozier's page so that I won't mess it up again.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Ratfae (talk) 17:30, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
