Founding of kumamoto: How could the city have been founded in 1889 when the castle was built in the 1600s? Christopher Mahan 19:53, 14 Nov 2003 (UTC)

It could've been just a town then. Moreover, "city" here probably means "legal city of the modern world". --Menchi 23:36, 14 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Removal of Helena, Montana from list of sister cities

[edit]

I looked for Helena on the Kumamoto official web site but was unable to locate it. The only US sister city they listed was San Antonio. If you have a reliable reference for Helena, it would enhance the article. Fg2 07:38, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, Sister Cities International (SCI), the umbrella organization for sister city relationships in the US, recognizes only one sister city relationship between a city in the US and a city in another country, though a city might have sister cities in multiple countries. San Antonio is the "recognized" sister city of Kumamoto in the US, but SCI also allows for "friendship" or "partner" cities. I suspect that's what Helena etc are. 74.140.140.52 (talk) 17:26, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Peace Pagoda on Hanaokayama near Kumamoto Station

[edit]

I want to find a citation to support this statement at Peace Pagoda: Work on the first Peace Pagoda began in 1947 at Hanaokayama with basic hand tools. It took seven years to build, being completed in 1954. Peace Pagodas were built by the Venerable Nichidatsu Fujii and his followers. The reason that I ask at the Kunamoto article is that I found just one Wikitravel article that says that there is a hill called Hanaokayama 花岡山 near Kumamoto Station and it has a pagoda.[1] Most other web sites that I have found seem to have taken their information from the Wikipedia article. There is nothing in the Kumamoto article that mentions either the hill or the Pagoda. Can anyone help, please? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 15:00, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Google Maps shows the pagoda:

Change of the Title

[edit]

I want to change the Title to "Kumamoto". Once I happened to launch an article under a mistaken title and I sent an e-mail to delete the article. What do you think ? Ichiro Kikuchi (talk) 04:48, 11 January 2010 (UTC)--[reply]

No, the article title is correct as it is. Please see the guidelines at WP:MOS-JA. -Amake (talk) 23:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice collage

[edit]

Just wanted to remark about the attractive collage of the city in the infobox. Someone really had a "good eye." Student7 (talk) 21:39, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Location and tourist attractions

[edit]

In the head of the article it is explained where Kumamoto is located but I wonder if it would not be helpful if it was stated that Kumamoto is located on the shore of an inlet of the South China Sea and across the bay from Nagasaki.

Also just south of Kumamoto are Sumiyoshi Nature Park and the Nagabeta Seabed Road. Should they not be mentioned? John Do'h 07:50, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
