Irrelevant Data

[edit]

Why does the article cite the total number of fatalities documented by OCHA since 2008?

And if relevant, why not cite numbers since 2000, which is the earliest event of casualty recorded on the list (in Israel and the OPT)? OCHA publishes data regularly. VonnegutGNU (talk) 00:39, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. It’s also not germane to the topic of the article. Longhornsg (talk) 10:54, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ghufran Harun Warasneh

[edit]

Ghufran Harun Warasneh was killed while holding a knife, trying to stab a soldier, shouldn't it be in the notes? I don't want to support Israel, but maybe we should be a bit less one sides so they don't have a claim against us 2A06:C701:45CF:F200:C172:9AAC:E957:D858 (talk) 14:36, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Let's stick to the facts, or at least NPOV, and not focus on supporting one POV or another. Here's what POVs say:
  • According to the Israeli military, Warasneh "was holding the knife in her hand as she neared a soldier close to the Al Aroub refugee camp, south of Bethlehem."
  • According to Israeli media, Warasneh had previously been arrested and imprisoned for a stabbing attack.
  • According to eyewitnesses (hardly reliable) to Al Jazeera, Warasneh "was leaving her home on her way to work."

Aziz Al-Tineh should not be on this list

[edit]

This list covers journalists killed in the course of their duties. It's not relevant for the purpose of this article and its not notable for the purposes of Wikipedia if a journalist who covers the I-P conflict dies at home of a heart attack. We need to report what the sources say.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, the best RS we have available, [1], it's not supported that Aziz Al-Tineh's death was work-related. More sources point to his death not being work-related:

  • "The source of the explosion was unclear, but CPJ sources said it was an accidental blast and not the result of a hostile act, such as shelling."
  • "Some journalists reported that Al-Tineh was on assignment when he was wounded. A number of CPJ sources, however, said the journalist had been paying a social visit to his brother, who apparently worked at the security post, when the explosion occurred"

Ahed Zaqout is a soccer player, not a journalist

[edit]

A sports presenter is not a journalist, and being tragically killed in your home is not in the course of journalism duties. Also RS overwhelmingly focus on him as a soccer player, and only mention his sports presenting in passing, in their reporting.

  • HuffPost UK: Palestinian Footballer, Ahed Zaqout, Killed In Gaza By Israeli Bomb
  • AJ: Former footballer killed in Gaza attack
  • Haaretz: Former Midfielder on Palestinian National Team Killed
  • Reuters: Former Palestinian midfielder killed when bomb hits his Gaza home

The inclusion criteria for this list includes the UNESCO database (and does not exclude sports presenters or journalists killed while not on the job). The death is recorded here and mentioned by the DG here so it would seem that it should be included on that basis. Selfstudier (talk) 11:08, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Journalists killed in the 2023 war

[edit]

There's one mention here of a journalist from Oct 6. But I don't see a mention of the Lebanese Reuters journalist who got killed

"At least 24 journalists have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza" (NPR). The Reuters journalist was Issam Abdallah (Q123046646). This Sunday Roshdi Sarraj (Q123196431) (1992–2023) was killed. --Kolja21 (talk) 19:42, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Roi Idan

[edit]

This will be a fast moving page at the moment but would be grateful if someone with extended-protect edit privileges could add Roi Idan, photojournalist, killed with his family in the Hamas invasion.

Incorrect Nationality Flags

[edit]

Anthony Shadid and Shireen Abu Akleh were both American, and the flags by their names should be updated accordingly. Abu Akleh was an exiled dual national (i.e. two flags is fine) while the flag by Shadid is outright wrong - he was born in Oklahoma City and is not even of Palestinian descent.
