The duplicate article Melissa O'Neill, with O'Neil's surname misspelled, was proposed for deletion. Debate is here; that title was redirected to this one. Bearcat 17:35, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

[edit]

Okay. You guys have been flipping the Asian half of her ethnic background back and forth between Chinese and Filipino for two weeks now. Figure out which is correct and stop messing around, please. Bearcat 10:57, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest it be left out until verified. --File:Ottawa flag.png Spinboy 15:17, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If I may rebring up what I said before... It's Flippino, I was at the Roundup Centre rally with her Mom and her grandfather and they were talking in Chinese cause I know Chinese. I also am a member of all the big Idol boards and it's Flippino. [[User:WestJet|WestJet]

For one thing, the word is Filipino, not "Flippino". For two, people keep changing it back to Chinese, so you need to provide a source, like a web article, to back it up. Your own personal experience doesn't count. As per Spinboy's suggestion, I'm going to change the word to "Asian"; it is not to be changed until there's a verifiable reference provided to support a more specific adjective. Bearcat 18:55, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As a modus vivendi (i.e., until there's conclusive proof), how about: East Asian? Or how about just Canadian? E Pluribus Anthony 21:55, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The stated context is that she is "of partial {Asian/Chinese/Filipino} heritage". This is valid encyclopedic information about her, which would invariably get reinserted if somebody tried to exclude it. I think it's better to resolve the issue than to simply pretend her cultural background doesn't exist. Since it's not written in such a way as to imply that being of Asian descent makes her not Canadian, I don't see it as problematic. Bearcat 00:09, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; I was just citing possible interim terms ... or Asian-Canadian. I tried to investigate the topic; to no avail, though. Perhaps someone should just drop into her chat room and ask her? E Pluribus Anthony 01:00, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I re-looked it up and it is Chinese. I really thought it was Flippino. WestJet

Could you provide a link to where you looked it up? And the word is still F i l i p i n o. Bearcat 20:47, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was pretty sure that she is Chinese, since "Yeung" is a common Chinese surname, no? (And yes, it is Filipino, not Flippino.) Keit 06:24, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They had an article abou her in the Chin. News Paper as she was on the front page of Chinese news.

Facts:

Melissa Facts! From Chin. News Paper!, She was on Front Page of Chinese News.

~She has a Chinese Name [Oh See Mun][Pronounced as OC Mun(like run but mun)] ~She went to China in 1997 and saw Hong Kong go independent. ~She can speak HALF Cantonese ~She tried moon cake b4[it's not important but it's cool ] ~She works for 16hrs[poor girl]

http://idolforums.com/index.php?s=340fa88e6f01952df4cd262d60bf440f&showtopic=373876

Therefore, she is not Filipino but half Chinese. Her dad is Scottish and her mom is Chinese.

Yes. Not only is Yeung a Chinese surname, it is also a transliteration based in Cantonese. Can't get more specific than that. So she is part Chinese. We also have a Chinese given name from her maternal grandfather to support that. End of story. --Kvasir 18:13, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think i'm right.

[edit]

[edit]

OK, Melissa O'Neil is Chinese, I mean her Mom looks Chinese and her last name sounds Chinese and she was on the front page of the Chinese newpaper in China, she said in it that she went to China and visited Hong Kong and her chinese name is ( OH SEE MUN) {Not very good at translating} so yeah!!! Melissa O'neil is not Filipino but half Chinese! AND THE PERSON WHO SAID U MET HER GRADFATHER!! HER GRANDFATHER CANT BE FILIPINO!! TO BE CALLED GRANDFATHER THE GUY HAS TO HAVE THE SAME LAST NAME AS SHE DOES!! SO HE'S PROBABLY UMMM SCOTTISH OR SOMETHING... YEAH !! { no racis words lol}

I don't think it was fair to attack me. Anyway, I edited your post for clarity. At least the part I understood. Please sign your post. WestJet

Mex announcment

[edit]

I thought the Mex announcment was on CTV Ottawa, then transmitted to eTalk, if you look it up on YouTube, it's not a eTalk reporter. --209.89.94.153 18:44, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tidying Up

[edit]

Hey everyone, just in case anyone wonders why I made changes to this article in so many chunks, it's because my computer has had a habit os crashing over the last day so I want to make sure none of my changes go unsaved. I've spent time updating the articles of Canadian Idol alumni Kalan Poter, Eva Avila and Brian Melo, and thought it was time to tidy up Melissa's so that it's consistent and looks neat and tidy. I'll only remove very little (such as opinionated sentences) so everything will stay the same, just in a much neater and nicer form. Cheers. Ryan_wood16 (talk) 22:05, 18 April 2008 (GMT)

Friday, 8 November edits

[edit]

I am a non-registering editor, but a regular and experienced editor at WP, and I and other undertook some considerable edits of this article today.

Notably, whole sections remain unsourced—see section tags—and considerable material in the article, though having nearby citations, remains unsourced as well (since, upon checking, we failed to find particular sentence elements in those afixed sources).

So, as unsightly as it might seem, this is the status of the article at present—the whole sections without sources violate WP policy and guidelines (but are left in, with the section tag, for the convenience of future editors).

And the unsightly other sections (Early life, etc.) that do have some citations: the reason that the sentences therein are parsed as they are, with citations interspersed within the sentences, is that some, but not all of the material in those sentences is from those sources. To clean up those sentences, and to remove the section and article tags, we simply have to remediate the sloppy earlier work of composing this article, and make clear—as WP guidelines and policies require—where we have derived our purported facts.

Personally, I would prefer moving the offending, unsourced sections (on the Canadian Idol competition, etc.) to Talk, and replacing them with single summary sentences derived from some published source. Further content can then be added back when specific further facts are found in new sources. That is, I think quality is more important than quantity, and I think the WP:OR violating (or plagiarised) content should come out. But I leave this to other regular, registered editors.

Finally, I would note that none of the most critical biographical features of the article—place and date of birth, birth name, etc. are yet factually certain, as they are among the unsourced content. For sake of the article and its infobox, these are perhaps the first elements that should be verified and tied to sources. Cheers. 2601:246:C700:9B0:9DE1:60DC:A185:E570 (talk) 21:41, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Rookie "The Overnight"

[edit]

S2E16 episode features O'Neil's character getting pushed into an audition of American Idol before being hurried out by her training officer before she could notice that the judges were offering her a golden ticket. Would make a great note in the article since she was a Canadian Idol winner: https://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/the-rookie/episode-16-season-2/the-overnight/1193606/ I'm a bit rusty on how to cite sources in Wiki — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.149.178.218 (talk) 18:56, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
