Quick comments

[edit]

This article has some big problems. 1. In the early section things are not described accurately leading to the perception that Illinois has 25 of the top 50 quarterbacks and 20 of the top 25.

In the college section the detail is at a gamelog level. I am all for detailing careers. However, at the encyclopedic level, you should be focusing on notable games. I would cut down the detail myself and I am one to be overly detailed.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:15, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The current change is worse. It still implies that of the 50 best quarterbacks, 25 of them are Illinois players.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 19:23, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken a crack at re-wording it.--Giants27(c|s) 19:24, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Kafka GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Mike Kafka/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
  • MOS: good, nbsps are in order structure.
  • Flow: There are a lot of really short paragraphs, one for each game. These should be merged to give a more logical flow. Also, with the season, are there not any trends? The article simply consists of a list of results. If he eg, started the season not so productively, and his stats went up in the middle of the season, and then declined, this should be mentioned. Some of this should be put in the article to give the sections more shape and less of a listy feel.
  • Sources:Pass RS.
  • Style of play: Why is there not any discussion of this? What is this person good/bad at? Fast running? dodging tackles? Good vision of 3-4 passes ahead? Strong at tackling? Accurate passing?
Subjective material is allowed if there is a disclaimer as such. It seems odd but in NFL/baseball/NHL, US type sports the articles tend to avoid discussing player style whereas soccer and cricket articles do not YellowMonkey (bananabucket) (help the Invincibles Featured topic drive) 04:31, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]

Per WP:LEAD, "The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview of the article. It should define the topic, establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points—including any notable controversies." I think the lead in its current state meets the criteria listed above, and should not be cut down. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:05, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is the high school stuff really that important? I mean, once you make it to the NFL, no one really cares about your HS stats anymore. Just looking at a couple of qbs' wikis, colt mccoy, sam bradford, peyton manning, and vince young, none mention HS stuff in the lead.Americanhero (talk) 20:19, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There really isn't a policy against having high school career information in the lead for NFL players, and it really doesn't matter what the other NFL quarterbacks' article have in their leads. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:30, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct, but as you quoted it should "summarize the most important points". At this point in his career, do you really think his HS stats should be some of the most important points? I would say no. Americanhero (talk) 22:03, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's an important point in his life. This is a biography, not an NFL-specific profile. Eagles 24/7 (C) 23:11, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Overall Comments

[edit]
  • 23 dead links are currently in the article, I have tagged them for you
  • I'm not seeing any serious issues here, the article is largely well written and sourced. I would suggest turning the jargon down, but I can't offer any concrete examples where it is necessary and would add to the article.
  • The article only contains a single image, if possible other images of him throughout his career would add to the article

Sectional Analysis

[edit]
  • Lead
    • Citations are optional in the lead per WP:MOSLEAD but the article looks good in this regard
  • Early years
    • Football doesn't need a link
    • This table seems out of place, is this the typical location for football players templates, would it be better right aligned? Not a GA requirement, just haven't seen this.
  • College career
    • 2006 season section could use more coherent paragraphs.
    • 2009 season could use more evenly spaced paragraphs
    • Perhaps the statistics footnote can be placed in the table
  • Professional career
    • This section could use some updates of his career since April if there has been any significant events

I did some work on the article today, and I'll continue working on it for a few days or more. Thanks for holding this for me, Winner 42. Eagles 24/7 (C) 01:39, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, looking forward to passing this! Winner 42 Talk to me! 02:06, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A few comments here after doing some more work to the article. It's down to 10 dead links but I'm having a difficult time finding archive URLs for those. A quick search of Flickr doesn't provide any new free images of Kafka since the last time I checked a couple years ago. "Football" may not need a link in the "Early years" section but it leads to the article for high school football, so I think this is warranted. The recruiting table in that section is also standard for many college football/NFL players' articles. The 2006 and 2009 season sections have been cleaned up, and the statistics source has been added to the table. Nothing has really happened yet since April for Kafka or the Vikings since the period from February to late July is considered the NFL offseason. I will update if/when anything happens in training camp and the preseason. Thanks, Eagles 24/7 (C) 01:21, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Eagles247: Just checking that you are finished with the article, if so I will pass it. Winner 42 Talk to me! 00:15, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, sorry. Yes, it is about finished. I'm going to add details about his first preseason game with the Vikings at some point in the next couple days. Thanks! Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:38, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
