Teylers Challenge[edit]

To create a reliable starting point for the multilingual Teylers Challenge, I have adjusted this page and added info + pictures.Gjjanse (talk) 13:54, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Why is he refered to as Teyler and not as Van der Hulst? Rmhermen (talk) 19:55, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Teyler van der Hulst is his last name, which is a Dutch "double name". It was shortened to Teyler in speech. Teyler is not his middle name. Jane (talk) 21:52, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

open questions[edit]

Maybe someone can help answering these questions inside the article?

  • The sentence "Roman Catholics, Mennonites, Quakers, and others were unable to participate in organisations such as the Dutch Society of Science (Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen), which was started in Haarlem in 1752 with the purpose of pursuing science in all aspects." comes up out of thin air. Could someone elaborate in the article why it is relevant? effeietsanders 15:05, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • This statement is made up of two parts; 1) Why Teyler was not a member of the Dutch Society of Science, and 2) Why Roman Catholics, Mennonites, Quakers, and others were unable to participate in organisations sponsored by the Haarlem regency. The answer to the first question is because the Dutch Society of Science was started by a group of Haarlem regents who only accepted new members of the Haarlem regency, who were almost all Dutch Reformed (so not Roman Catholics, Mennonites, Quakers, and others, unless they somehow married into the Regency). The answer to the second question is that according to historians, Teyler was not a member of the Haarlem regency elite, though he definitely was a member of the Haarlem Mennonite elite. I will try to spell this out in the Teylers Stichting article when I get a chance. Jane (talk) 11:23, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
