Annuity for whose benefit?
[edit]The German wikisource has this sentence about the annuity:
- Dies Mißgeschick veranlaßte den Erzbischof am 6. Juli jenes Jahres gegen eine Rente von 4000 Goldgulden auf das Erzbisthum Köln zu Gunsten des Landgrafen Hermann zu verzichten.
I don't know German. Google Translate renders this as:
- This mishap caused the Archbishop on 6 July of that year to give to a pension of 4000 florins to the archbishopric of Cologne for the benefit of the Landgrave Hermann.
Did that lose something in translation? Was it for Hermann to dispense, and if so to whom? - Fayenatic (talk) 16:59, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, it did. German puts things in a different order, and Google translate gives up too easily on rendering prepositions correctly. A better literal translation:
- This mishap caused the archbishop on 6 July of that year against a pension of 4,000 gold guilders on the archbishopric of Cologne in favour of the Landgrave Hermann to give up.
- --moving it around to group things together in the English-language order:
- This mishap caused the archbishop on 6 July of that year to give up (on) [auf . . . zu verzichten] the archbishopric of Cologne in favour of [zu Gunsten des] Landgrave Hermann in exchange for [gegen] a pension of 4,000 gold guilders.
- Does that show how it works?--Yngvadottir (talk) 17:32, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
