Flag and Coat of arms

[edit]

I'm placing the Saint Helena-specific symbols on this page. I believe they are still official.

Before the new constitution came into force, the "old" flag and coat of arms were the official symbols of the territory of Saint Helena and Dependencies. The flag was not in use on Ascension Island or Tristan da Cunha, but it was still the flag of the entire territory.

There's an Explanatory Note at the end of the page for the new constitution, which says: "This Order establishes a new Constitution for St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. As Ascension and Tristan da Cunha are no longer called Dependencies, the Order changes the name of the territory from St Helena and Dependencies to St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha." [1]

Now I may be misinterpreting this, but I take this passage to mean that while the constitution changed the political structure of "Saint Helena and Depedencies" and gave it a new name, it did not create a new territory. And since we do not have any news about the territory changing either its flag or its coat of arms, we can assume that it retains them, just like it retains its capital and governor. I've also changed the redirects on Flag of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and Coat of arms of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha Orange Tuesday (talk) 18:02, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An IP user 129.100.254.151 changed the flag into the Union Jack and remove the coat of arms.[2] I support his/her edit. I don't think the symbols of Saint Helena automatically became the new Overseas Territory's.
Formerly, the symbols of Saint Helena are regarded as the symbols of the entire territory because Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha were dependencies of Saint Helena. However, I think the symbols of Saint Helena are not the symbols of the renamed territory because Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha are not dependencies any longer.
Conclusively, the description in the website of the Saint Helena Government supports my opinion. Please read the 2. of the "Notes for editors" in this page. According to it, Saint Helena, Ascension Islands and Tristan da Cunha use their own flags SEPARATELY and there are 16 flags of overseas territories although there are 14 overseas territories. --Wikipean (talk) 19:30, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The flag and coat of arms shown here is wrong. According to the new constitution [3] the flag and the coat of arms of the whole territory is the one of St. Helena. --Chtrede (talk) 12:31, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Where does it state that exactly? Rob984 (talk) 18:57, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Climate

[edit]

Any chance of someone adding a Climate section?--66.158.109.140 (talk) 14:40, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Each of the three parts of the territory has a (very) different climate. The general contrast is given in the geography section. More specific detail is in the individual articles of the islands. David (talk) 14:49, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha – Moved 12 May 2013 from "Saint" to "St" by Douglas the Comeback Kid (talk · contribs) stating "St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha' is the proper official name of the territory as stipulated in the St Hele..." Unfortunately the rest of the justification was not saved. Although the St Helena website refers to St Helena itself using "St", when it refers to the whole territory it seems to use "Saint", e.g. in "Announcement of our new Governor" (2011). The CIA World Factbook also uses "Saint". All the others in Category:Island countries named after Saints spell the word in full. Relisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. ‘St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha’ are actually three separate British overseas territories?

[edit]

It seems that Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha have been three separate British overseas territories, rather than three constituent territories of a single British overseas territory, since 2009. I think the following few things seem to point to this conclusion:

1. Paragraph (j) of the preamble to the Constitution of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (schedule to the St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha Constitution Order 2009), while describing Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha as forming ‘a single territorial grouping under the Crown’, refers to them as ‘separate territories’ in the same sentence.

2. Although there is a single Constitution of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, this constitution covers the three territories in three separate chapters and provides for three parallel set of institutions for the three territories with no overlapping whatsoever; nor is there any overarching institution covering all three territories. What appear to be overlapping institutions or positions only ‘overlap’ in terms of persons, not offices: (a) although anyone who is the Governor of St Helena is also the Governor of Ascension and the Governor of Tristan da Cunha (sections 143 and 208 of the constitution), the three offices remain distinct, just like how the British monarch is also concurrently the monarchs of 15 other states; (b) the same applies to how the Attorney General of St Helena is also the Attorneys General of Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (sections 150 and 215 of the constitution); (c) similarly, the judicairies of Ascension and Tristan da Cunha are the courts of Saint Helena (sections 153 and 218 of the constitution), but the Saint Helena judiciary functions as the judiciaries of Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, respectively, when dealing with the laws of Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

3. There are three separate legislatures for the three territories and each of them can only make laws for their respective territories (section 47, section 60, sub-section (1) of section 155, and sub-section (1) of section 216 of the constitution): the Legislative Council of St Helena cannot make laws for Ascension and Tristan da Cunha like it used to, and there is not a single ‘Legislative Council of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha’.

3. The way the Web site of the St Helena Government (http://www.sainthelena.gov.sh) is laid out suggests that the government only deals with Saint Helena, not Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. There is hardly any mention about Ascension and Tristan da Cunha on that Web site.

4. The law section of the Web site of the St Helena Government (http://www.sainthelena.gov.sh/legislation-of-st-helena-ascension-tristan-da-cunha) states that there are three different sets of laws – Saint Helena law, Ascension law, and Tristan da Cunha law – rather than a single ‘St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha law’. There are also separate sub-sections dedicated to each of Saint Helena law, Ascension law, and Tristan da Cunha law. Each of those sub-sections show that each of the three territories have their own list of statutes.

5. Each of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha are separately represented in meetings abroad: for example, the 2017 meeting of the Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council.

Douglas the Comeback Kid (talk) 16:29, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

British Overseas Territory is an official term defined in UK legislation. According to Schedule 6 of the British Nationality Act 1981 (text) - as amended in 2002 and 2009 - St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha form a single British Overseas Territory. Area

[edit]

There's an inevitability about the expanse. The area of Gough Island is reported 67 or 91 square kilometers and this causes an irregularity in the area of the entire area of 394 or 418 square kilometers. Mircea (talk) 11:16, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Tristan Da Cunha

[edit]

Tristan Da Cunha use to be a dependency of St Helena, but I believe they now report directly to the Overseas office and no longer to the Governor of St Helena. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Randy NH (talkcontribs) 04:53, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs significant alteration

[edit]

This is about the administrative body, the British Overseas territory, not about each island. The history section should be about the debate that lead to its creation, that is all. What we have here is the history of the islands that has very little if anything to do with the BOT. If we stick to the topic of this article then it will be a lot shorter than it is. If I want this article rewritten, am I sailing against the wind? Roger 8 Roger (talk) 09:00, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
