Flag and country[edit]

I have called for a vote on which country and flag should be used for Steve Chen. There have been numerous edits and counter edits for Steve Chen's Flag and country of origin. Does anyone agree with the current state of the article? Ishmael Rufus 17:54, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Label[edit]

Does Chen qualify as a Chinese Americans? Chiang has never stated that he was Chinese American (as far as I know), so labeling him Chinese might touch upon the whole "pan-green" and "pan-blue" political issue again. I believe the best policy is to categorize people from Taiwan that emigrated over to America as Taiwanese-American, unless the person otherwise states so.

Yes, unless the person explicitly rejects being identified with "Taiwanese-Amerian". Keep in mind that contemporary politics is not over whether Taiwanese islanders are "Taiwanese" but whether they are also Chinese in ethnicity and citizenship. No,that's not true, of course there's no controversy over labeling a Taiwanese as Taiwanese ,but you still can and should categorize the immigrants from Taiwan in America as unless individuals explicitly rejects it. Because,first of all,most Taiwanese who have "Chinese names" are actually "Chinese descendants",just like Steven Chen, which means they ARE Chinese in ethnicity whether they admit it or not; second,you should also keep in mind that Taiwan is still a territory of "Republic of China", so there's no doubt the legitimate citizenship of the native-born Taiwanese are "Chinese":Citizens of a Chinese Republic . Moreover,the concepts of Chinese-American and Taiwanese-American is not really mutually exclusive.

Nationality[edit]

Chen may have been born in Taiwan, but he did all of his post-elementary schooling in America, and his claim to fame rests on accomplishments in America. It seems disingenuous therefore to label him as "Taiwanese". Agreed, furthermore WP:Ethnicity makes this clear when they state that previous nationalities, ethnicity, and/or place of birth are not to be included in the lead. Furthermore, we don't have any sources stating that he has any other nationality other than that of the United States. I found a New York Times article specifying his American nationality here: https://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/01/technology/have-supercomputer-will-travel.html. I have yet to add it. If given some article evidence that specifies the individual's retained Taiwanese citizenship, I can agree if someone strongly feels it should be included in the lead as well. Support. Take the readers where they want to go. On Google Books, the Youtube guy is in title of the No. 2 that shows up, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, Jawed Karim: YouTube Creators. The supercomputer dude shows up in the No. 3 book, but not because there is any interest in his life story. He is the author of a chapter on computer design. Tunbridge Wells and daughter[edit]

I'm removing the claim that Chen lives in Kent, the references to his daughter, and the name of his son, as I'm fairly sure these were invented by vandals. As they've been part of the article for a year or so, I thought it best to leave a paper trail:

Name of the son and move to Kent was introduced in this quickly-reverted edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steve_Chen&diff=581775020&oldid=581668323 (The same IP had also added the phrase "he is a lad" to the article...)
The next try was more believable as it edited the infobox and text (and invented a daughter) http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steve_Chen&diff=583789562&oldid=583462276 -- this edit stuck.
The daughter's name was introduced by another IP address a few months later, without any source: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steve_Chen&diff=597381008&oldid=prev
The suggestion that Chen lived in Kent while working on MixBit in California is completely ludicrous.

IMSA[edit]

It's a well known fact at IMSA (confirmed by administration) that he got kicked out sophomore year. He did not attend for his final three years.

Inclusion of information about the country of Taiwan[edit]

Recently, a user has wanted to include the following: "located in the high tech democratic nuclear weapons armed industrialized developed country of Taiwan" in the early life section of the biography. I have reverted his edit and asked him to start a Talk page discussion but haven't seen one yet. I disagree with the addition of this content as I feel that such information is a stream of facts and opinions regarding the country of Taiwan, however well sourced and well-meaning this information maybe, and not contributing any information or focus on the individual that is the subject of the article. Also, the same individual has included a flag of Taiwan next to the place of birth in the infobox which directly violates WP:infoboxflag as specified in Wikipedia regulations. Thoughts?
