I worked there as a volunteer. We ran out of.30000 registration stickers a little.after 11. We.were about half way through bringing people.in at that time had to divert the incoming crowd from the main south entrance to the east and west entrances. By the time the march started I estimated.the crowd.would.be.60,000. Then the.march began. The march.was.a.loop of 20 city blocks on 4 -6 lane roads and when the lead element got.back to.the start at a least.a.third of the crowd had not yet started. While doing cleanup after the event I spoke to a reporter who said Austin Police.Department had uped its crowd estimate to.100,000. There were people injured by falls and dehydration but after talking.with the.capital police and the events volunteer watchers there were no confrontations.involving the.marchers.. None. And this march was nearly 5 times as large as the march organizers anticipated. While 50,000 was the initial.APD estimate at.some point after.the event finished APD raised their estimate.to.100,000. Many news media had already published 50,000 but later.analysis doubled.the.number. high.praise for the original poster. This must have.been posted.within minutes of the.event.closing. this was far.and away the.largest.event I have been a part of including filling an 80000 seat football stadium.when I was in.college. so although the article as posted was.accurate.you.should expect the numbers to be revised upward. Also, and wait for the police reports to be sure, as far as i could tell this march started as 100% non violent. Yes, people required medical treatment, but in talking to people at the first aid station.these were mostly fainting from dehydration, and accidental falls. I am going to assert that this was a 100% nonviolent march of 100,000 people. These statistics are.based on anecdotal experience I had talking to first.aid staff, capital police, and news media that was still around while we were.cleaning up. So expect.the numbers to.change but thanks to the original poster for a fine job
