Steam shovel -- edited recently due to new info about Ruston Proctor no. 306

  • This and the two other pages ( http://www.earthmoversmagazine.co.uk/?p=8611 and http://www.earthmoversmagazine.co.uk/?p=8650 ) should also be added to the Threlkeld page (in a new section for the museum).
  • references need to be properly cited, and several need to be WebCited -- particularly the VET own page, which dates from 2013 and is prone to being lost
  • still need to read through the whole article to look at changes since 2007-8 edits --lots more archive photos on Commons -- useful to examine these against text (_not_ include lots more!)
  • update preservation section to include gallery of preserved examples with extended captions (Commons has several good photos that will encourage cross-linking)

Urgent work required

WikiProjectThomas: The Other Railway has been mangelised over the years and needs restoring (compare EdJogg version 25 April 2011). Complicating this is that some of the main book character articles (such as the Skarloey engines) have been blanked and links now default to TV articles. Will take some fixing. Needs plan of action to avoid spending all waking hours doing this!

  • 2014-11-07 -- Ted Robbins -- ref to narrating the Thomas audiobooks was removed in 2012 as it had a ciitation needed flag. Look for changes by Daytona2 and restore if you can find a ref!

  • Arlesdale Railway -- query regarding history of Jock -- see talk page and changes. Need to double-check entry in Island of Sodor and add references.
  • Tower Subway -- this edit is a bit misleading, since you expect to find a circular entrance behind the theatre (which is not visible in Google Streetview). Checking out a page on Sub-Brit (which has brilliant coverage of the subject) shows that the entrance-way that was demolished (by a warehouse falling on it!) was actually a tin shack, and the replacement 'kiosk' is probably no more than a protective cover for the shaft, which is still visible in one of the pictures.

  • Day Out With Thomas is now definitely the correct name from HIT (used on their website) but it is currently a redirect to Day out with Thomas. Need to get admin help to change this.
  • Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway -- has been added to the narrow gauge railway cat (here) -- should ask whether really needs this as well as 'funicular' -- it's not really what is usually considered a "narrow gauge railway"
  • Michael Rosen -- see this talk page edit which indicates that the correct information is available in the reference...needs sorting soon.

  • Watercress Line -- this edit removed a change to the location information of several of the structures. The ones replaced were all marked 'citation needed', but the replacement text was (apparently) sourced from someone on the working party. Inclined to believe the latter, but the edit requires further work. Need to check where the original information came from and decide what to do.

  • Thomas & Friends -- (experienced anti-vandal Administrator) [[User:JamesBWatson]] removed the (unreferenced) section on Voice Actors with the comment "Removing subsection which is unsourced, and has undergone innumerable changes of a kind which make it clear that the list is completely unreliable." EdJogg replied (with thanks) on his talk page, noting "I suspect that now I should visit all the character/episode pages, and the corresponding actor pages, to remove all the unreferenced material -- could be 40-50 pages :o(. Trouble is, this kind of stuff has a habit of re-appearing." So, you'll have to consider doing just that!

  • SY Gondola -- just discovered (but around for a while). Have heavily edited the 'Sailing' (advert) section, and rewritten the lede, but the rest -- particularly relating to the steam engines -- could do with some attention too. [Good lunchtime's work to fix.]

  • Aveling and Porter -- added an ODNB ref for Thomas Aveling, and modified two links elsewhere to Thomas Aveling (engineer) because Thomas Aveling is (currently) a redirect to someone else. Need to use the ODNB ref to build an article for TA himself, with a hatnote to the other bloke.
    • Also note that there is a brilliant history section at the front of "Age of the Traction Engine" by Robert A Whitehead that needs applying here. Current TE history is woefully inadequate.

  • T&F 'season' articles have all been renamed, and are now of the form Thomas and Friends (series 14). WP:THOMAS/FAQ has been updated to suit, as has the main T&F page and the Thomas template. Now need to rationalise TWO redirects for all these pages, although the vast number of links are from the template.
    • First change should be to work through each Series page, updating the infobox links (have done 13 and 14, plus Emily page).

  • John Inshaw -- only just discovered by EdJogg, but an early experimenter of steam-powered road and water craft (in Birmingham), also inventing a steam clock. Several ext links discovered, with more info to add when you have time.

  • Top Gear Race to the North was nominated for GA on 15 Feb, and editors given 7 days to address the issues raised. Unfortunately, no-one did anything and the nomination failed. User talk:SilkTork (the reviewer) has suggested mutual encouragement with EdJogg to work on improving the article to GA status (also see article talk page). Try and look at it before you get too far into March!

  • Beam engine -- Clem Rutter has taken exception to the lede and commented it out! (Quite right too, really, as at least half of it needed re-writing.) Long comment added to his talk page, but a new lede will be needed, possibly after expanding the article somewhat -- it should be covering all the different known types, in order, as summary sections with links to the main articles, and it isn't doing that...
    • Clem has indicated that he is no more qualified to write this than I
    • Clem has added a series of relevant links on his talk page -- not sure what he is expecting to happen next!

  • There's a proposal to delete all unreferenced BLP articles. A debate is going on. Wait for pages to be tagged and then act fast (most of EdJogg's pages are not BLPs!, but see list further down page). However, following an alert at WP:THOMAS, the following project pages have been identified as BLPs lacking references -- these need tackling as a matter of some urgency:

  • this edit removed a redlink for 'backpumps'. This is a phrase which needs defining. Lock (water transport)#Pumping is an appropriate place, although the current text only deals with pumping to a summit. It needs the existing text to use Crofton as an example, and then mention that many restoration schemes involve the retro-fitting of back pumping to reduce the water usage. Do a wiki search of "back pump" and you'll find about ten articles requiring wikilinks. Then alert on WP:UKW.

  • Steam donkey -- dispute over a category inclusion with user:Norcalal. Have left a message on his talk page. He has responded, quite abruptly, and it would be worth raising the question elsewhere. Need to do some tidying up as he has responded at his talk page, EdJogg's talk page (where there is no copy of the question yet) and on the steam donkey talk page...

  • (Commons) -- on Category:Kew add a 'see also' to Category:Kew Bridge Steam Museum (which is across the river from Kew!) Note that the 'ww2 shelter' includes Kew as a cat, which needs removing.

  • Papplewick Pumping Station -- needs pictures from Geograph uploaded to Commons and added to article. (EdJogg has already added an ext link pointing to Geograph!)
    • Update (06 Feb) - new link added with some useful photos, including an info panel describing the boilers (number, pressures, usage, etc). Website also describes the steam engines. An interesting couple of hours editing!

  • File:Poyle Pump 022.JPG -- Andy Dingley has pointed out that this pre-dates traction engines by several decades (hence removed from article) -- now need to research this further, and update the Commons description (and Geograph page?
    • See [5] where there is the additional information:
      • "The Trust was responsible for the maintenance of 17 miles of the Bath Road between Cranford bridge and Maidenhead bridge. They erected several pumps along the turnpike, specifically in order to fill water tanks to lay dust. Only two such pumps remain now, one here at Poyle, and one at Longford." Presumably the tanks were in horse-drawn carts, which would explain the need for the great height.
    • Now need to update the several Commons pages again! (and Geograph still)

  • steam engine -- (and other articles) -- has acquired a link to a full Google digitisation of "A descriptive history of the steam engine" (1824) by Robert Stuart (with pictures). This remarkable book covers all the early history in some detail. Very useful!

    • Article Counter -- lists number of article space edits (EdJogg at 10600 in 2700 separate articles!) plus all articles/redirects/etc created by a user (EdJogg: 16 articles, incl. 4 DABs, plus 128 redirects!!) NB - may not work with search parms in URL

  • URGENT -- Some 'tidying' has been done, resulting in a few issues (eg, lost links to 'Unfeatured' characters (they were redlinks!) and changing of catsort parms)
  • Valve gear -- this edit has applied a caveat to some existing text - need to check accuracy against available sources -- may be necessary to add 'most' with a footnote explaining the exceptions
  • Richard Garrett & Sons -- this edit has added a long paragraph that needs some fettling -- no more than 15mins work if not side-tracked!
  • Talk:Steam car -- rant left by EdJogg about the state of the start of the article. Really need to address this as there are no descriptions of the actual "how it works" kind.

  • An anon editor (67.251.39.56 (talk · contribs)) has changed the ordering of character sections in Arlesdale Railway, Skarloey Railway and Minor characters in The Railway Series (lots). Query has been left on their talk page regarding the ordering used. Looks like it might be by 'first appearance'. Need to decide if this order is best, or whether alphabetical is better, then adjust accordingly. Note that editor has had criticism from elsewhere about edit activity, but has not responded anywhere.

    • Somehow must note that the name came from Mannheim Roller, and was only called steamroller after the group was formed... This is going to take some serious research!   • Outline of steam power ??
  • There is a Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge which is aiming to build a hierarchy of outlines covering everything on WP (also see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Outline of knowledge). It would seem appropriate for there to be an Outline of steam power sitting under the technology and energy outlines. This should be followed up when you have a bit more time!
    • This was prompted by a change to Talk:Outline of vehicles, where the banner was changed to that for the newer Wikiproject.
    • Note that Index of steam energy articles used to be called List of steam energy topics, but was renamed by user 'The Transhumanist' (lead editor of the project) at the end of April 09, probably so that the article did not appear on their radar. However, "List...topics" is the preferred naming convention for A-Z lists of articles (which is what it is). BUT it is actually an Index page (and is part of the Wikiproject Index (?), also led by Transhumanist). Hence the first stage is to contact the Transhumanist about this and broach the subject of a possible 'steam outline'. (This is not urgent!)
    • Need to find out if the outlines are supposed to include ALL articles about a subject (it may be that this is the case, and if any sections become too large, a sub-outline is required).
    • There is a template available (Template:Outline generator) which is designed to form the basic structure of an outline page

There is a proposal to delete all unreferenced BLP articles (BLP = Biography of Living Person). A debate is going on. Wait for pages to be tagged and then act fast (most of EdJogg's pages are not BLPs!). However, following an alert at WP:THOMAS, the following project pages have been identified as BLPs lacking references -- these need tackling as a matter of some urgency (update progress at: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thomas#Request for comment on Biographies of living people):

Redirect replacements

It is not usually necessary, and officially discouraged, to edit a page merely to change a valid redirect to the destination page or another redirect. However, there are some cases where the redirect used is not ideal, and EdJogg considers that their continued usage is likely to encourage incorrect usage elsewhere. Hence, the following redirects should be changed when spotted while editing other articles.

Around 11 Feb 09, James Watt was moved to James Watt (inventor) and 'all' inward links were updated (James Watt being converted to a DAB page). Fairly soon after, the move was reverted as inappropriate, but many of the new links were not restored. To avoid more bad links being created in future, need to resolve this page-move shenanigans.

When editing the following pages, change James Watt (inventor) back to James Watt. Note that (usually) this should not be done in isolation, only as part of some other edit. Delete link from list when updated. (Compare progress against 'What links here')

The Barry Ten

  • The Barry Ten were the last ten locomotives left at Dai Woodhams' in Barry.
  • At the very least need a redirect to a full list
  • the list should be on Woodham Brothers initially (there's an obvious place towards the end)
  • Barry Island Railway includes a partial loco list, as these are where they are currently -- UPDATE -- much movement in 2010: some going to GWS for components, others elsewhere
  • Search WP for 'barry eight' and 'barry ten' and you'll find more refs to link
  • http://vogr.org/ is a useful set of pages which look like an old Barry Island Railway page - contains much of interest, and should be 'rescued' before it vanishes! (each loco has own page) -- too late -- no longer accessible (Dec 2010) and blocked at Internet Archive
  • On GWR 1000 Class there are references to two engines from the Barry Ten, components from which are now being used in the County/Grange projects...
  • May 2010, 80150 now owned by Mid Hants Railway

  2. ON-GOING: 'Thomas' (TV) character pages were given a major makeover by User:Starkiller. Good edits, but need to re-check Railway Series -related information, links from related RS character pages, and incoming links (anchors). This can be done piecemeal as each character is checked. (end-May 2009)
  3. (03 Jun 09) Fictional locations in Thomas and Friends has had a major update recently by Starkiller (ignore all previous edits!) Now shows that TV series locations are pretty-much unrelated to their book relations, apart from sharing some names. This should allow:
    • Splitting of 'common' articles into either TV or book sections
    • Replacement of remaining pages by either redirects (to TV or book page?) or DAB pages (overkill?)
    • Make sure all common-named places are cross-linked in both directions
  4. Hero of the Rails -- new feature-length 'Thomas' film due out in September? Recently-created article, copy-edited by EdJogg but currently unreferenced. Likely to attract a lot of noise... (27 May 09)

  9. (Dec 2008) ProhibitOnions (talk · contribs) (an admin) has removed the Japanese voice actor details from Toby the Tram Engine (here) and at The Fat Controller. His reasoning is sound -- the series is broadcast in many languages. Need to:
    • Write a FAQ to cover (non-)inclusion of language-specific details (already done, Feb 2009?)
    • Remove the Japanese text from the remaining articles -- (copy it to TSW/the other wiki!) Annie & Clarabel also done now. (NB some already removed before 'rescue' - eg James/Edward? - Check Contributions around 26 - 30 Jan)
  10. James the Red Engine -- 'James as a model' has been rewritten (and proof-read by EdJogg) but it still makes little sense! (12 Nov 08)
  11. Thomas Live show -- James the Red Engine includes a mention that his model is a record holder. Googling "largest model railway engine" also revealed this link and this link, both of which contain short video clips. Can see models of Thomas, Percy and James, plus Annie and Clarabel and some trucks, all moving; Harold and Jack; plus a face (Gordon?) in the shed. Worth adding these as refs to relevant pages. Articles which have the potential to be developed from already-found references.

This section could contain every article in WP, but the idea is to corral the articles encountered by EdJogg that have a specific potential for development. For example, a short article that links to an 'official website', but makes little use of its content. Although shown in date order, this section is for non- time-critical enhancements, and is intended to leave the main ToDo for more urgent stuff.

  1. Amberley Museum Railway (02 Jun 09) -- needs wikifying
  2. Jacobs Well (21 May 09) -- found 'official website' describing known history of village. Great potential for expanding a pathetic article!
  3. Bagnall 0-4-0ST "Alfred" and "Judy" (16 Mar 09) -- page would benefit from expansion from the linked sites (esp. Pit to Port)
  4. New Pages Required (Feb 09):
    There is no WP entry for Frederick Savage founder of Savage's of King's Lynn, maker of fairground equipment and, according to the J&H McLaren & Co. page, NOT the inventor of the fairground centre engine. A WP search for 'savage kings lynn' reveals a number of pages that will require links. (Also see savage and Savage (surname) DAB pages. and [6])
  5. Metropolitan Water Board Railway (11 Feb 09) -- assoc. website has seen major update -- article is desperately out-of-date (lots of info at website)

    Responding to a need for stopping services between long-distance express trains, in 1905? the GWR introduced its first steam railmotor service between A and B. The steam railmotor is a single passenger carriage with an integral steam engine bogie at one end, plus driving cabs at both ends. The service proved so popular that (~) trailers were built to provide extra accommodation. The trailers were built to resemble the railmotors in appearance, but were only provided with a single driving cab. These were the first purpose-built 'auto trailers'.
  19. Sodor (fictional island)#The Railways of Sodor (08 Oct 07) -- having added 'the first railway on the island', there is now a glaring hole in the history between the first railway and 1914!
  20. Rail transport (12 Sept 07) -- Has been identified as a WP 0.7 article, yet it is in a terrible state. Much work is required to get it to GA status!
  21. Penmanshiel Tunnel (27 Jul 07) -- section about fire incomplete: needs further info from 'Red for Danger'
  22. Chepstow Bridge (01 Jul 07) -- needs work -- former GA candidate requiring lede and refs
  23. Markfield Beam Engine (14 Jun 07) -- not urgent, but would be an enjoyable edit from the new ref found (see talk page) and from the official website.
  24. The Titfield Thunderbolt (05 Jun 07) -- add section describing the rolling stock used (websites can provide some of the information)
