I'll take a gander at my books on the Gills. I should certainly be able to provide his appearances and goals data, if nothing else..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:43, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just remembered I was meant to be doing the above, and added it in. Blimey, I wish we had someone who could score like that now! If I turn up any more, I'll add it in....... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 14:06, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added what Arsenal info I have on him - turned out he more or less saved us from relegation in 1910. Not much more I could find than that though - I also dropped the Buchan reference as the two couldn't have been team-mates at Arsenal - Buchan left in January 1910, before McGibbon joined in March. DYK for Abe Hartley[edit]

Eddy Brown[edit]

To be fair, the only thing I've reverted is back to the surname-first format. I haven't touched your date changes at all, and wouldn't. Publication dates are supposed to be in the same format as the article, and until they get round to making ISO accessdates on all citation templates format themselves similarly, I also explicitly use the international format these days (see featured article 1956 FA Cup Final). (I wrote the Eddy Brown article a looong time ago when date standards were different, and probably when I didn't know there were date standards anyway :-)

I prefer surname-first for authors in references because it's more usually done that way in printed books, and because if I'm skimming through a long list, it's easier to pick out an author if it's the first word on the line. Also, {{Cite book}} now deprecates the author parameter in favour of first/last, which forces surname-first.

Tis interesting how Chris got away with complete inconsistency of format on Steve Bruce at FAC when he managed to notice the only two inconsistent ones on 1956 FA Cup Final.... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:33, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed that you have edited the page about Jack Barker. I'm pleased to see that you have corrected the name of his Denaby club from Rovers to United. My Father in law is Jack Barker's son and when he saw the Wikipedia article for the first time he was surprised by some of the errors in it. I said I would try and help correct them, but being new to editing anything in Wikipedia I soon found it isn't that straight forward! As you clearly have an interest in Jack Barker could I ask your advice about how to proceed? For example his date of birth is wrong (I have his birth certificate which says 1906, however because this isn't published in a book I apparently cannot change it!) The family references are also wrong, the people mentioned are no relation of his (his son obviously knows this but again as he hasn't written a book about his father and his family it seems that I'm not allowed to correct the errors). His son also has several photographs but posting those seems even more complicated! If you do have the time to reply I'd be very grateful for any advice you might have Regards David Shn606 (talk) 20:10, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It seems I can now upload images! Should I upload the image of the birth certificate here and if so what category do I put for the copyright question? Thanks David Shn606 (talk) 20:29, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,I have tried to upload the birth certificate! I was at the Jack Barker discussion/talk page and clicked on upload file from

the toolbox on the left, I assumed this would place it on the discussion page but the image hasn't appeared -- goodness knows where it has gone. Is there something else I should have done? Cheers David Shn606 (talk) 00:38, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well done and thank you! How did you find the image? It's ok I don't really need to know. Final thing; it would be nice to get a picture of him onto Wikepedia. I've looked at the UK Copyright rules on Wikepedia which seem to say that an image over 70 years old when the author is unkown is OK. Is this your understanding too? Cheers David Shn606 (talk) 22:59, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have uploaded the image of Jack Barker (JWJackBarker.jpg) although again it seems to have disappeared into the Wikipedia black hole! I couldn't seem to find the same copyright boxes as the example you gave so I put it in as Public Domain as the copyright has expired. I hope this is OK. I hope you can find it and get it in the right place! Thanks again David Shn606 (talk) 23:31, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great; His son (also Jack) is really pleased the article is now accurate! At this point I'm going to leave Wikipedia editing forever! Good luck to those of you who remain and thanks again for your support! (Just hit by an "edit conflict"??!! Wikipedia had the last say!) David Shn606 (talk) 23:49, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A little bit more detail, and my book confirms the booking clerk's pen incident. How it took me three edits to add so very little is an interesting question... :-( cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:31, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This guy may be of interest to you - he may have played for the Saints and went on to manage a host of clubs - also if you have any idea of his Football League appearances that would be fantastic to add in as well. Ta. Qwghlm (talk) 23:11, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers. The order of clubs makes much more sense this way - he would have been based in the north before his father joined Woolwich Arsenal in 1899 and so it makes more sense his professional career started in Woolwich rather than down the south coast. Not one I'm familiar with, I have to say (i.e. I've never heard of him), but I'll check my GFC books tonight. Assuming he played at least one competitive first team game, I'll be able to get you the dates of his time at the club and his apps/goals stats..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:26, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added in what I've got. Seems he was quite the star player in his one season at Brompton. It doesn't say which club he next moved onto, though, I'm afraid, so I can't confirm that the clubs listed after Brompton in his infobox are in the right order...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 21:34, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. A Norwegian merchant ship seems an unusual place to find a Royal Navy rating. It is likely that he was part of the DEMS gun crew - particularly as [1] says that "Six of 22 crew members and two of three gunners were lost." Jll (talk) 20:09, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a few tweaks to the infobox. You might want to add a bit of info about who owned the ship and her prewar career if you can find anything about it. A good source of info on ships from WWI to WWII is Plimsoll Ship Data where Lloyd's Register entries are available online. Mjroots (talk) 08:28, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find any sources on the internet apart from a fansite. User:Struway2 told me that you were a member at allfootballers.com and i was wondering if this is still the case. William Fraser[edit]

Hello, just created Cammie Fraser, my book says he is the son of a William Fraser who played for Aldershot and Northampton. If William played first-team football for either of those, then the only candidate would be your Bill Fraser (footballer). Could you see if your books give any indication of his moving to Scotland to father a footballing son? thanks, Struway2 (talk) 12:24, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I assumed you couldn't have anything definite or you'd have mentioned him in Bill Fraser's article. I've put a note on both talk pages as you suggested, thanks, Struway2 (talk) 18:59, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Eammonn Collins[edit]

Hi, excuse my barging in, he made his debut, aged 14 in the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980 against Kilmarnock. There is this about his appearance, from the Blackpool Gazette, talking about another Pool player -

"But not even Kay can beat the record of former Tangerine teen sensation Eamonn Collins, who became the youngest player ever to turn out in a professional game in this country (*) when he played for Pool against Kilmarnock in the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980. He was 42 days shy of his 15th birthday."

(*) He became the youngest British player.

Taken from - http://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/sports-news/Matty39s-place-in-history.1253821.jp

There is more about, and I'm sure Dudesleeper will also have more.--♦Tangerines♦·Talk 18:00, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Eamonn Collins (footballer)[edit]

He's not listed in the list of players in my book, but he is listed in that game against Kilmarnock. He came on for Dave Hockaday. The Anglo-Scottish Cup quarter-final first-leg tie took place at Bloomfield Road on 9 September 1980, in front of 4,904. 'Pool won 2–1. I'm assuming Roy Calley didn't deem the competition notable enough for him to warrant a place in his list of players, and he didn't make any League appearances. Matty Kay is the youngest player to appear for Blackpool in a League game. - Dudesleeper / Talk 21:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Daemonic Kangaroo, further discussion and input would be good here so we can try to work something out. Camw (talk) 00:28, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for tidying the infoboxes; it looks better now, certainly. It's a shame the infoboxes aren't equal width, but I don't think that can be avoided given the cricket one's requirement for a specific source to be listed, which I don't think is the case for the football infobox. I'm just glad I didn't have to put the football infobox in itself, as I'm always getting those wrong: I keep forgetting that they only count league appearances, something that seems strange to me as the equivalent cricketing stats virtually never distinguish between league and cup games. Alf/Albert Bishop[edit]

Interesting one. Presumably the name Alfred came from the Wolves book cited in the article. This Wolves site calls him Alf, and this newspaper article calls him both Alf and Alfred. Joyce does call him Albert John, with no abbreviated name given, so I'll add the Joyce ref for the full name, but it does look as if he was known as Alf both at Wolves and in his family. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:20, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

George Smithies and Corinthian(s)[edit]

Hi, I'm aware that the club's called Corinthian F.C., but I'm a bit confused as to why they have to be referred to in the singular at all times. The Corinthian-Casuals website calls them Corinthians, e.g. in the report of the 1913-14 Brazil tour, but in the other tour reports as well. And The Times, whose wondrous digital archive is my main source on amateur players of the distant past, always calls them either "Corinthians" or "the Corinthians", never the singular. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:08, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agree entirely about the club name, piping it to Corinthians in the infobox was my mistake, and "the Corinthians" in the text is fine. Still seems odd that The Times of the 1920s appears to have used the plural exclusively, even in fixture lists and team lists for representative matches like amateur internationals, North v South, etc. I did find one use of the singular, where it listed those who were expected to attend "the Corinthian F.C. dinner at the Cafe Royal"; suspect I wouldn't have known which bit of cutlery to use... It's been a long hot day, not just a long day. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:28, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely right, good catch. I would ask you to think up the latin for "don't edit after midnight when you've been working" but it won't stop me, alas. Britmax (talk) 07:24, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Christian Dailly[edit]

Can I ask why you changed the honours format on Christian Dailly from the format previously? --Johnelwaq (talk) 09:04, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Simply because you do not like the style used is not a great reason to change a format which, I think, is the best way to display the honours using the Template:Sport honours. It is not my aim to be patronising but to be clear and to the point about the honours. The flags are not just for decoration, although admittedly it does look better, they also distinguish from the different countries where the honours were won.
As for the template's use for managers who have won many trophies e.g. Smith etc., the pages are like many things on WP, in need of a touch up.
Is there a way in which sports honurs should be displayed on WP? As per MOS? If not then maybe there should be a standard way to avoid these types of situations. --Johnelwaq (talk) 16:02, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dual sport infobox comments[edit]

Hi,

Looks like you cross-posted a whole thread on dual sport infoboxes onto the talk pages of the footybio2 and cricket bio talk pages. Cross-posting generally isn't a good idea - it leads to forked conversations where ideally things should be discussed centrally. Some users are also not very keen on having their own comments copy-pasted without being notified. The best thing to do would be just to post a link to the ongoing discussion on any talk pages where you think people might be interested.
