Re: Thanks
[edit]With people like you working to develop Bangladesh related articles I feel pretty hopeful already. Thanks. (Well, would you care to take a look at my editor review? You don't need to say good things about me, you know, rather a harsh critique would be most welcome.) Aditya Kabir 12:56, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- I have decided to be bold and have taken the article to FAC. See Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Kaziranga National Park. Aditya Kabir 15:45, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

This is not in accordance with WP:LAYOUT and should been thoroughly discussed before you implemented it. The only reasonable way to back it out is to revert to the version before you did it. You have caused completely unnecessary work and caused the loss of not only your own edits but those of other editors. You are welcome to fix it properly, but please don't do it again. IPSOS (talk) 01:04, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, "possible" is not the same as "advisable", "permitted" or "recommended". It's still an extremely bad idea. WP:CITE says that the citation style should be determined by consensus of the regular editors of the article. Before making such a major and hard to reverse change, you should have determined if the consensus supported it: it doesn't. Your note on my talk page is simply wikilawyering. Yes, you found a loophole. No, it doesn't give you the right to override consensus. IPSOS (talk) 13:02, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
A quick and cursory survey found several examples of FA articles that separate explanatory notes from citations: Rabindranath Tagore, List of Harry Potter films cast members, Beagle, Scouting, Galaxy, Jerusalem, Solar System, Supernova, Thylacine, Ziad Jarrah, Antarctic krill, Demosthenes, Cat's Eye Nebula, Galileo Galilei, Harry McNish, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Red Barn Murder, Four Times of the Day, Elizabeth Needham, Ladakh, Peter Jennings etc. I thought you would be interested in this information.
I have also added this to the Layout talk page where the issue is being discussed. Abecedare 19:35, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
- You are welcome. I saw that Beagle, which was promoted as an FA a few hours back, used the style and that set me off on the scent trail. You'll notice that WP:AST (who have 41 FAs!) and User:Yomangani (who has roughly the same number :-) ) seem to prefer this style, although neither use it exclusively. Abecedare 20:13, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
- Since both IPSOS and both continue to strongly oppose the use of the dual format, do you still feel that you have consensus for its use? So far only one other editor who actually edits in the Hinduism project agrees with you. Sandy does not edit in the project, and her support seemed limited to a general view that some FAC articles use the split system. Most FAC articles do not, the standard method calls for one set of references. Unless some new point of view is introduced, I do not see that there is consensus for this radical change. What do you think? Buddhipriya 06:44, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps I misunderstood your reply, by which I took "no problem" to mean that you had no problem with going back to the prior single-section version since consensus for the dual system does not exist at this time: [1] The only reason why I then posted a request for a fallback on the Hinduism talk page was because I thought you were ready for that step. I regret if I have misread your message. My personal preference would be to leave the single-section version in place now, since there is currently no consensus for the dual system. Should consensus emerge in the future, the change can be implemented at that time. Do you feel that another approach would be more fair? Buddhipriya 04:37, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Forgive me
[edit]I have deprecated Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh and made it Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh/History Workgroup. I also have mass migrated the participants from the former project to the new workgroup. May be I was a little too bold here. Forgive me for doing this without consultation. The move was a part of the effort to rehash the entire Bangladesh project. If you and other participants agree, the next step should be deleting the previous page. Hopefully, The new workgroup would improve the level of activity related to coordinating our efforts. Please, respond to my talk page. Aditya (talk • contribs) 21:53, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Articles
[edit]- Hi there! Well, as you can see, I've been tweaking the Lage Raho Munna Bhai article. Any discussion as to when a proposal should go out for it to be a "Today's Featured Article?" And no "classic films" at the moment, though maybe when things slow down a bit... -Classicfilms 06:34, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
- I've also been working on a few articles that need work if you are looking for projects. Much of Gandhism is unreferenced and needs to be rewritten with sources. Also, I'd like to develop the article, Giri (Sanskrit) which will help to develop Gandhigiri. -Classicfilms 16:09, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
- That's interesting - I didn't realize it would be a problem. Is there a specific rule that states the number of images such an article needs? At some later point, if people are interested, it might be worth exploring. -Classicfilms 17:16, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dwaipayanc, i created this page on 18th July 2007 and now i want this page to be nominated for FAC. is there anything i can do in order to improve it. before nominating this article for FAC i want to improve this article completely. Canned warning about canvassing
[edit]Your contributions history shows that you have been aggressively cross-posting. Although the Arbitration Committee has ruled that "The occasional light use of cross-posting to talk pages is part of Wikipedia's common practice."1, such cross-posting should adhere to specific guidelines. In the past, aggressively worded cross-posting has contributed towards an Arbitration Committee ruling of disruptive behavior that has resulted in blocks being issued. It is best not to game the system, and instead respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building, by ceasing to further crosspost, and instead allowing the process to reflect the opinions of editors that were already actively involved in the matter at hand. IPSOS (talk) 14:31, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Re consensus
[edit]We don't need a consensus to change it back to the previous consensus version. You needed to show consensus for the change. You did not and do not have a consensus to change it. Lack of consensus to make the change in the first place is sufficient reason to revert to the long-standing presumed consensus version. Just because all the editors whose edits arrived at that consensus version do not respond is no reason to presume that they might side with you, or to canvass for such support. An article RfC is the correct way to get more input. IPSOS (talk) 17:27, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Portal India News
[edit]I am quitting the Portal India news/ Current Events for now. I don’t want to be in the bull fighting ring. Let others who are interested do the job. If there is a change in situation, I may rethink. Sorry about it. Regards - P.K.Niyogi 01:02, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- I had taken up the news in Portal:West Bengal on my own. It was just an experiment and then I got attached. I can’t leave it because I don’t see anybody interested in that job. Portal:India / Portal:Current events/India was not a natural attraction for me and to do a good job, it takes at least 2 hours a day. Moreover, after doing all the news, the mind gets disturbed for other work. If really I had some interest I would have found, on my own, ways and means to continue. Now, I would like to continue on new articles, improvement of some existing articles (including some I wrote earlier) and some photography. There are hardly any photographs of Kolkata. The scope is enormous but my mobility/ energy is limited. Therefore, let’s see how much I can really contribute. I am sorry that I am not able to continue with the work of news on the India Portal. I can understand that your career is bound to draw you in but since you have contributed enormously to Wikipedia, don’t say good bye in haste. Keep going, even if it is on a lower key. Your presence around provides so much confidence in others. Regards. - P.K.Niyogi 16:53, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I'd like to draw your attention to Bangladesh portal. I have tried to address the concerns in earlier peer review and checked the portal against Featured portal criteria. Based on this I think it is proper time to push for Featured Portal status for Bangladesh Portal, which will be an important milestone for WikiProject Bangladesh. But to achieve this I need help from you. Please participate in the on-going discussion on the talk page and give me your valuable inputs.-Arman Aziz 03:45, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Etymology of Kolkata
[edit]Concerning the etymology of Kolkata
- Thanks for the welcome. Noted that you changed back the entry on the etymology of Kolkata in the Kolkata entry.
According to the entry on the etymology of Kolkata, the city's name is derived from the village Kalikata. It is true that some refer to the city as Kalikata, but the name Kolkata or Calcutta cannot be derived from this village-name. Kalikata and Kolkata is two different words, with different etymology. The reference to Kalikata in order to explain Kolkata is actually primarily a folk-etymology, which cannot be explained either concerning linguistic changes or culturally (like changing the pronunciation of Kali Ma). I would like to refer to P. Thankappan Nair's book "Calcutta in the 17th Century" for an English discussion of the etymology.
When it comes to early references to Kalikata, these are also incorrect - even as there is made a reference to Britannica. It's occurrence in Bipradaser Manasamangal is an interpolation, and the oldest Mughal/Persian reference is from 1698.
In short - the word Kolkata cannot be derived from the word Kalikata. It is two separate words, which needs separate etymological explanation. Again, the English name Calcutta can with a high degree of certainty be derived from Kolkata, but not from Kalikata.
Yours, g.
