Ref desk thread of the week award[edit]

Am on the edge of my chair waiting for this week's RD-TWA to be announced. Please don't keep us in suspense any longer ! Gandalf61 08:25, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you - excellent choice, well worth waiting for ! Gandalf61 08:33, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the stub sorting, but I'm puzzled as to what you'd like Wikified about this article? --Dweller 13:47, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. The tone reads more like a stilted news article than an encyclopedia article. Cheers, :) Dlohcierekim 13:51, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Harrassment on TalkPages.[edit]

I suspect that complaints have been made to my mentor - see this exchange and the next one. I cannot be sure that my robust defence against these charges amount to acquittal, but it's comforting that my tormentor is apparently not satisfied with the response he's getting there and has gone back to harrassing me on my TalkPage (as he has done so suuccessfully to so many others). Perhaps even more significantly, there's another change - he has run out of friendly edit-warriors prepared to make reverts for him. As a result his intrusions now demand that other editors should revert themselves. That's something that never used to happen. I was starting to lose faith in WP's capacity to deal with those who trample policy in this fashion - but perhaps we're seeing the system work at last! PRtalk 15:22, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's something very bizarre about the length of time this editor has been able to carry on as he does. Does he pay to contribute here? Does WP operate a white-list of editors, people who cannot be slapped down except in real extremis? Was that list imposed on WP, or was it something we've just embraced? I've not checked carefully, but I'm not sure I've ever noticed him doing any good to articles - and sometimes a lot of damage.
I changed my sig in order to save space on the page (and a potential mentor, User:HG suggested I add a "Talk" button, so that got me experimenting). I sometimes have my suspicions about it's effect on people - see the top three of these entries for ethnic labelling rampant at ArbCom. PRtalk 15:47, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have to humbly report that I felt it necessary to return to the TalkPage in question and make a further addition. It is/was not my intention to flout your ultra-sensible and gratefully received earlier intervention. PRtalk 17:10, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

James Milner FAC[edit]

I don’t know if you’re aware but James Milner is a current FAC. It has been one for about a week now but so far only one user has provided feedback. Since have given feedback on this article in the past I hope you can provide some here. Buc 19:33, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As much as I apprishate the praise your comment wasn't very helpful as it gave no feedback. If you wish to show support please say so. If not and you have no feedback to give it's better to remain silent and devote your time to continuing your excellent to improve Wikipedia. Buc 09:28, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I beg to differ. In what possible sense is it "...better to remain silent..."? The Rambling Man 10:29, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is the first time we've met, I'm doing new page patrolling and see you created that article [1] which is great, can I suggest you change it to a redirect instead to [2]? Thanks and see you around. Phgao 08:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Prod was not set up correctly so reverted it. I had not read the talk page, and have no preference either way. Was just reverting it as I assumed it was vandalism (someone who hated O'Reilly?). - Mike Beckham 08:58, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FA Bratislava[edit]

Hi Dweller. I've thought you may want to look again into the Bratislava article and check the changes after your comment. To your major objection, History, I've found it quite troublesome to reduce those parts and succeeded only in moving some demographic data out, but otherwise I'm stuck and even user:Tankred (one of the collaborators) doesn't think it should be reduced any more. What do you think? Regards, MarkBA t/c/@ 16:22, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I want to put this up for FAC nomination soon but am not sure if the coverage is up to scratch. Your opinion would be helpful as you have written a view FA articles. Monsta666 12:53, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism on my User Page[edit]

DYK error[edit]

As you are an admin you are able to edit the template yourself, there is little I can do, the community doesn't trust me with the tools. Thanks for pointing it out though, if you are uncomfortable editing said template, just poke one of the admins on the DYK suggestions page. IvoShandor 12:56, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NCFCPOTY[edit]

You seem to have lost the "played their entire career for NC" somewhere along the wayiridescent (talk to me!) 16:28, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not really. It's still there as much as it ever was. You're just noticing its absence because I've now coloured the HoF members. However, I am considering ditching it. It's relevant for a list of NCFC players, but not really for a list of POTY. --Dweller 18:44, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I must say I'm surprised at who's not in the HOF. Further thought - do you suppose someone could rustle up a photo of Darren Huckerby from somewhere? It seems more appropriate for the current holder to be the one pictured (even if he is possibly the least photogenic player since Keown retired), and I refuse to believe that no-one's ever taken a photo of him! (BTW, Commons should be ashamed of themselves for this.)iridescent (talk to me!) 19:09, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try. Yes, some of the absentees are interesting. There were a further 10 inductees into the HoF in 2006, but I can't find any information (RS or not RS) on who they were. I assume Hucks was one, but I don't know yet. --Dweller 21:01, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nine wins without conceding[edit]

Re Nine wins without conceding a goal, I'd say just go ahead and have it deleted. It's not really noteworthy enough to have an article seperate from the FL or Stockport County pages. CharlieT 20:44, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NCFCOPTOPTPOTPTY[edit]

I've fixed your ref, I made a small mod to the "...shown in bold..." - didn't like that {{legend}} thing when you weren't actually using it. However, if you feel strongly then I won't bat an eyelid over its replacement. How're things? The Rambling Man 17:51, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Re caps use in POTY. It's a tricky one. The award itself is actually the Barry Butler Trophy, so we can use lower case, I think. However, when it's referred to as a shorthand (e.g. in the template) it's a surrogate title and should be capitalised. Does that make sense? --Dweller 10:57, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just concerned that we use three different ways of referring to P/p(layers) of the Y/y(ear)... The Rambling Man 10:59, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. What do you suggest? --Dweller 11:02, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I reckon it needs to be "Player of the Year", which means you'll probably need to rename the article... The Rambling Man 11:07, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That'd make a change. OK, will do. NB I unwikilinked a date in the article, thinking it was per MOS, but you changed it back. Happy either way. --Dweller 11:40, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Peaceful Elf has returned[edit]

Hi, Dweller. Glad to be back. I don't think CZ is for me: takes itself too seriously. I've decided once and for all to sort out all those tour and season articles I created when I had probably had a few too many. Pakistan is done, Sri Lanka well on the way. When I've finishedt I might join you on the soccer project: I've got loads of stuff about footie history that could be useful (I'm a lifelong Liverpool fan, by the way, and suffering a bit at present). See you around. All the best. --BlackJack | talk page 18:21, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Which is it?[edit]

"Player of the Year", "Player of the year" or "player of the year"? I think all three are used, you need to make your mind up..... The Rambling Man 09:18, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, the silent treatment, I can just about handle it. Good news is I'm not off to Belgium tomorrow so I'm back for a while. Bad news is you're not talking to me.... Seriously, I'm hoping to completely blow your mind with a list of Tractor Boys plus, in deference to your good self, a list of carrot crunching POTYs.
This whole Featured Topic thing is quite a challenge. Is it possible for a football club? I'm more than prepared to go with NCFC on the way (btw) so let's talk. However, I do have a small advantage by having Sir Bobby at FA already. I don't see Gunny there, (or Grant etc etc snigger), so perhaps we should focus on my bunch?! Joking. Deal is, I'd like for us to kick some Wiki-ass and do something unprecedented (again) and hit a decent topic hard. What do you think? The Rambling Man 20:59, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, hope you're ok. The Rambling Man 06:56, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing you have to worry about is if you've created any double redirects. There'll now be a redirection in place at the old name which will deal with most, if not all of those pages which refer to it. I'll double check for doubles for you. The Rambling Man 11:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done, I think. The Rambling Man 11:58, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bus stop[edit]

User:Haemo has recently blocked User:Bus stop from editing his user talk page on the basis of his recent multiple misleading requests for unblock. Unfortunately, he has placed that block to last through April. I noted that you had offered Bus stop the possible chance of returning around January, and a block longer than that might complicate your ability to discuss with that editor what your conditions of removing a block on him are. On that basis, if you saw fit to do so, I was wondering whether you might want to change the period of the existing block. Thank you for your attention. Thanks for your message[edit]

Thanks for your message, but I don't think I'll be bothering much with admins any more. An honourable few - like you - do a lot of good, but I don't really have any confidence in the system anymore. DuncanHill 11:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also note that although comment was made that "this doesn't belong here" and a "resolved" tag placed on the thread, no-one bothered to explain where it did belong (except you on my talk page instead of in the thread). DuncanHill 12:07, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I posted at ANI because of a patronising edit summary from someone who I'd warned for pretty blatantly breached NPA, I didn't engage that editor in debate because of his response, and his history of deleting without response any "negative" comments from his talk page. However, he is obviously the sort of editor that the admins at ANI want to encourage. Wikistress? Yes - but as no-one on Wikipedia seems to want to do anything to fix what causes Wikistress, then it's not surprising. Nowhere at WP:TT does it say that templates shouldn't be used for experienced editors and I'd never come across the essay that suggests they shouldn't - but then I don't spend much time reading essays, I just disambiguate, fix some vandalism, paddle in the refdesks, make a few little articles, and try to find out how to do things better. DuncanHill 12:34, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for your messages, I think the best thing for me is just not to bother with ANI or any related pages, I don't feel at all welcome there, and I don't feel that using them can benefit me or Wikipedia, so it would be pretty pointless. Best wishes. DuncanHill 13:04, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
maybe a "List of helpful admins"? But I expect that would upset someone! :) DuncanHill 13:35, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FL Main page proposal[edit]

You nominated a current WP:FLC. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual main page will resemble either an excerpted list format or an abbreviated text format. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 16:38, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fine, thanks. How are you?[edit]

Hello, mate. Sorry to see Norwich not doing too well (and I complain about our team rotation which still leaves us fourth in the PL!).

Yes, I'm fine, but I wish I hadn't got involved in that trad totals thing. I've apologised to Nigel in case it was me that got to him, though I suspect it was the other fella there, actually!

I'm working on the tour and season reviews to try and get rid of all the empty articles and consolidate them as period histories. I should have done that in the first place and then let the individual articles develop out of the histories in due course. I've finished Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. India is ongoing and I've made a start on Australia. England I might just leave alone!

What are you up to these days? Best wishes. BlackJack | talk page 19:48, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hey. I was wondering if you could give me a little help here. On my sandox, I've made my own player of the year list for York City. But, I'm a little stuck on what to call the article. The current idea is "List of York City F.C. Clubmen of the Year", but, I'm not sure if "Clubmen" is the correct term and I don't think I've ever heard it used. Do you think something like "List of York City F.C. Clubmen of the Year award winners" woulf be better, or will the first be sufficient? Thanks, Mattythewhite 12:00, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm.. not too sure about that. It would kinda be "Wikipedia making up its own title", especially as it's never referred to as that. But, that is basically what the award is. So, I'm confused. Maybe I should put something up on WP:FOOTY and see what people think? Thanks, Mattythewhite 13:25, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Argh.. I think I'll go with List of York City F.C. Clubmen of the Year. Mattythewhite 13:47, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think clubmen too since that's what the award is actually called. You'll have to carefully explain what that means though! The Rambling Man 13:50, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect edit[edit]

Hi Dweller, I noticed that you placed this text on my talk page

  • Hi. I assume this ([3]) was just a mistake, because even if you had good cause to make this change you surely would have discussed it first. --Dweller 15:16, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your correct that i fumbled an edit here. During the time i made that edit there was quite a wave of vandalism striking trough the articles, causing me to revert a lot more, and a lot faster then i normally do. I think that i saw the word "Dick" in this one, and assumed that it was just another vandalism. And when i assume vandalism, i simple press the neat little rollback button that gets the vandalism away :). A manual revert would just have gotten the word out of the text (Even though it was there intentional), but the tool im using automatically reverts to the last change NOT made by the user which version is being reverted. Thats why the bots version was restored, instead of your earlier version.

Anyway, Apologies for this, and with kind regards as ever, --Excirial 16:03, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hurrah. Well done. I'll be following up in no time now I've got a book! The Rambling Man 18:53, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've fixed your issues! The Rambling Man 19:33, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've fixed your issues! Oh, and MOBY is a minimum no consensus with a leaning towards weak keep at the moment so it's safe as houses... The Rambling Man 20:56, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've made you a gift[edit]

Template:Norwich City F.C. managers. Hope you like it. It raises a question. Ask me what it is and win a prize. The Rambling Man 15:39, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it was a toughie. The real question I was asking is if a guy has a template for managing a club, should he also have a succession box for the same job? If he's got more than one succession box and the templates don't cover all jobs, what then? Whaddya reckon? Do you see what I mean? The Rambling Man 07:30, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Morning! Yes, I think the manual of style says get rid of redundant succession boxes. By the way, I've turned into a template-factory. Check out my recent edits. The Rambling Man 10:43, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
