WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! I applaud your Pennsylvania sports articles and edits. Great stuff. Much appreciated. Especially your tireless research in the Jerry Sandusky case. It's unfortunate that your name-change proposal ended in a stalemate —neither side having gained a consensus. The closing comment by the other administrator was interesting: I would like to develop a naming convention for scandal articles. I'm confident that a pattern already exists... particularly for abuse scandals. It requires research though. Any thoughts on going about this? Thanks for the kind comments, Fluous. As tedious as they can be, I think an RFC is likely necessary on whether it's best to stick to the person who initiated the scandal, the institutions that were proven complicit, the institutions on which the scandal had an effect, or simply what a majority of the RS material says, the latter being what we have ... yet preposterously the RM ended the way it did. This Sundays Award

Can we jump over this weeks "Top of the Queue" editor for just a weeks delay. Ive asked EC aka MF to write a personalized Bio and he hasn't gotten back to me yet. And I'm having a "commented out" problem with the Image for the "Eddybox" at Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/sandbox. There are no strings to be pulled, whether by Go Phightins!, another administrator, or anyone else, since it's a community consensus that decided upon the fair-use guidelines. For better or worse, in order to preserve Wikipedia's reusability, the fair-use guidelines are restrictive in what they allow. With Dennis's situation in mind, we should have a talk about the direction and leadership at WER. Titodutta's heartfelt response to Q-15 in his RfA makes it embarrassingly clear that we really don't have any plan or course of action to take when it comes to our declared goal---retaining editors. I thought maybe we could go thru the list of WER members and invite those interested to have a "brainstorming session" or something, to address the issue. Maybe focus on Admins that have visited and participated at the WER:talk page. Maybe a dedicated IRC-channel conversation. Something. I told Tito I would get back to him in a week or two. I'm sure he is busy with his visit to the Wikipedia Official Administrator Tailor to be fitted for his new velvet robe. I always wondered----Is the mink collar optional? TRA! He is right; we don't have a bona fide plan per se, but at the same time, I don't think Dennis's vision was ever to create an action plan ... more to provide a sounding board for discussion. Editor of the Week criteria

Regarding this edit: the restriction on admins came about after Worm That Turned was nominated, and we were discussing if he fit the criteria of someone who hadn't already been recognized for their contributions. Buster7 subsequently suggested that admins be exempted from receiving Editor of the Week, thereby avoiding having to make a subjective judgment on whether or not Worm That Turned was sufficiently recognized already. isaacl (talk) 03:40, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

One important thing I forgot to mention: Thanks for your post, where you explained the goal we had set two (!) years ago on focusing on an editor's positives, even if they were less than perfect in other ways. I think the discussions will die down fast enough if left alone. We can only hope that someone drawn to whichever topic brought them to the page might stick around and contribute something: a new idea, a thank you to someone, a nomination, anything at all. Although I typically don't ping very specific persons to a WikiProject discussion page, the truth is many editors do it all the time, using whatever criteria they think is useful. So in the end, if any one shows up and helps generate a consensus towards anything constructive, that's great!
Regarding Editor of the Week: given that the default position of most people is to leave things as they are, I don't think there is much risk in the initiative being separated from the editor retention project. And even if it were, I don't think either Editor of the Week or the editor retention project will be changed. In theory, people could start campaigning for a completely new scope for Editor of the Week, but as it would be a lot easier for anyone interested in that to just start a new award, my guess is it wouldn't happen. isaacl (talk) 20:02, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Adjusting pilot start date - WP:Co-op

Hello Go Phightins!,

I'll be putting out a formal update sometime soon, but I wanted to inform you that I've decided to push our start date back to mid-February rather than in January. There are number of reasons for this, but the biggest factor is that we are now facing the hard work of implementing our designs on the Mediawiki interface. It's a limiting environment to work with from a web-building perspective, and the team that worked on the Teahouse can offer similar testimonials to these challenges. We also want to make sure there is time for us and for you to test the environment out, ask questions at our project's talk page, and give us a little time to make any last changes before we start inviting editors to the space. If some of you know you will be unavailable during this time, it's totally fine if you need to bow out for the pilot. But we do need all the mentors we can get, so even if you can take the time to mentor just one or two editors, that would be fantastic.

Draft for WER Op-Ed article

  • See either the WER Project main talk page or EotW's talk page for a "working draft" of the article. I put it in those two places to allow other members access and hopefully to stimulate their participation. I'll make sure any changes that are made will be correlated in both places.
  • How long should the article be?
  • Looking back over the past week, I'm really glad so many editors showed up and participated in some lively discussions. The only problem is that "The Consultation" came to a screeeching halt. But that's what happens when editors interject and divert the conversation off on a tangent. It is so hard to get it back "on thread". I call it "headed for the cow pasture where all the cow pies are. Once you step on one the stink won't go away" TRA! . Buster Seven Talk 17:37, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
    • There are some editors who are keen on debating matters of injustice or inequity. While this can be useful at times, it would be nice if some who came for the injustice would stay for the main course, so to speak. But it's human nature,(*) and in a volunteer, consensus-driven environment, whoever shows up has to co-operate together.
    • (*) I'm as guilty as anyone else in wanting to respond when I see someone make contradictory statements; I have to keep asking myself if a response would help matters, or if it's best to just let it go. isaacl (talk) 18:00, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

FRqankly, I don't intend to change the style, because I don't think there's much point: There are so many jokes I expected to be at least mildly controversial. Last week poked fun of a 1930s Sci-fi illustration by claiming it was for the story "The Woman Trapped in a Sex Toy". This week claimed we're all on amphetamines, and had a joke where I literally copy-pasted a previous description of Portsmouth Cathedral including the part where I said it was coming back in a few weeks, and I'd try to resist copy-pasting it. The "de Kock" puns of a couple weeks ago passed without question. I had a joke about "Christmas came and went and probably won't even call, the bastard." I pointed out that 16th century Nativities often use positioning of figures that make it look like Mary dropped the Christ child (though, to be fair, that's actually true). None of these raised even a twitter of protest. I don't think that I can possibly even try to predict what will annoy people, and, if we did, I'd probably not have actually cut the one that did raise protest.
