Anyway, do you think it was okay that i moved the WP:RM manually and also created archive 88? Did i do the right thing to get Werdnabot to go to the new archive, by changing the code?

Its weird. Even though stats say that <1% are Admins, i still think half i know are admins. Simply south

deleted article

Hello, A brief article I wrote was deleted by you as "Unremarkable people, groups, companies and web content". It was about a mostly forgotten old hardcore group (Damage), but in the context of a list containing many much more obscure bands that haven't been deleted, that categorization seems odd. What sort of information needs to added to indicate that the band in question wasn't "unremarkable"? potanka 19:37, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi! User, blocked by Gurch on 20th December for repeated vandalism, seems to be at it again on the "French wine" page. Template protections

Hello Gurch, I hope you are doing well. I noticed that you perm-protected Template talk:WikiProject Texas and some other templates today. If you don't mind, I would like to inquire as to your reasoning. That particular template has existing for a long time without any trouble. Did something specific prompt the protections? Do you have a certain criteria you are using to decide which ones to protect? Thanks very much for satisfying our curiosity. Johntex\talk 07:01, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Seems like Semi-protection would be better suited with problem templates getting full protection. Morphh (talk) 19:49, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Edit To Kombai

The edit to the Kombai article was an accident. There was vandalism on the page I intended to delete but my changes blanked the article by mistake. I intended to fix this but I became sidetracked before I could. I'm sorry, I didn't intend vandalism. – 04:40, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Gurch - good to see you adding stubs to articles. Can I ask one favour though? Almost every country in the world now has its own separate geo-stub in the form CountryName-geo-stub (e.g., Italy-geo-stub, SriLanka-geo-stub). If you can add the country where possible when you stub, it'll save a bit more work further down the line. Cheers, and keep up the good work :) Grutness...wha? 05:02, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, laziness on my part. I'll try and use slightly more specific tags

Any help is still good work, even if it's just the geo-stub tag. I just wasn't sure whether you knew about the country tags. Grutness...wha? 05:13, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, feel free to drop by at WP:WSS, the stub sorting wikiproject. Any new stub sorter (and any returning stub sorter from years past!) is always welcome :) Grutness...wha? 05:30, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

why did you delete...

Why did you delete the User:Ariele page?

I learned it was deleted when I was writing a reply to someone in which I was going to list the various sockpuppets who have harrassed me.

Ariele was the first sockpuppet vandal to stalk me. I made a big mistake to allow her to stalk me for so long. I did so because she seemed to be, well, mentally unbalanced, and did not seem to be aware that her actions were so contrary to the rules. I'd like to be able to return to her list of User contributions, to see where I went wrong, and cite her behavior in examples.

Now I don't know how to document that abuse.

What do you suggest I do now?

Was this deletion in conformance to some policy?

Cheers! -- Geo Swan 19:00, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

When you return here, if this is still fresh in your mind, I apologise for the slight mix-up regarding Joszef Kasza. Comment from Anetode

You know, at first I tried to help by protecting this page after seeing the amount of irritation it had apparently caused you. The apology for doing so, and the rest of the note, were probably not a good idea, but now I don't care. Your treatment of this whole thing has been just immature. Yes, Wikipedia is a bureaucracy with too many pedantic pricks running about. Yes, users littering your talk page with inane barnstars and admin nomination requests can wear thin after a while. But then just exploding, taking your stress out on others, and admonishing those who dare try to lend support - all of this is just plain childish. You want to retire? Go ahead, everyone appreciated the work you have done. But then don't check your talk page every day and leave insulting messages, no one here deserves your abuse. Leave with grace, like others have done, even though they grew tired of Wikipedia. Or, better yet, stop the whole drama queen act, assume some responsibility, and come back to helping us make this a worthwhile project. Don't talk to the users you don't like, don't frequent areas that tick you off, contribute in a way that brings only enjoyment to you. Or don't, it's your choice, but know that your attitude is transparent. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 21:11, 31 March 2007 (UTC) ˉˉanetode╦╩ 00:27, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Apologies for irritating you and anyone else who I may have irked along the way. On balance your decision to protect the page was probably a good one. It would have been fine had nobody made a fuss.
I'm not leaving because I've grown tired of Wikipedia. I would have gone a lot more calmly if I were. You're free to find fault in the manner of my departure (and I readily confess there is much to be found), but please bear in mind that doing so doesn't help anyone. Yes, my conduct was less than satisfactory, for which I have already apologized, and yes, my behaviour may be viewed as childish.
I wish I could simply "not talk to the users I don't like", but that just isn't possible. Not any more, for any length of time. I wish it were, but it isn't. I'm sorry. My actions were wrong, and I should have seen this coming and found a more constructive way to go about things. I understand that the continued reading and blanking of messages on my talk page may be viewed as unacceptable, and I shall stop doing so. If you feel I've violated a policy, by all means take things further.
A bit of explanation, which should hopefully show you why my departure has nothing to do with barnstars or anything remotely along those lines. I didn't really want people knowing about this (other than those I told privately) because I didn't want to cause unncecessary hassle, however it is perhaps best to be honest. This is not my only account. I have been contributing for eighteen months. I was an administrator for six months. I got frustrated with the project in January and briefly quit, decided I might be able to make things work if I came back under a different name and started afresh, did so, but only delayed the inevitable and ended up much worse off as a result. User:Gurch is my other account. Take any action which you feel may be necessary. In hindsight, this was a very bad idea, for which I apologize once again. I will, as you request, go properly this time.
Thank you and good luck – Qxz 22:19, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Image:Qxz-ad11.gif is tagged {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} can I make a derivative (translate into russian)?--Vaya 12:09, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

You can, but you'll need to tag the derivative with {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} as well – and it can only be used within Wikipedia itself (it's not 'free' in the sense that a GFDL or public domain image is). The tag is necessary because it's a derivative of Image:WP1 0 Icon.png, which in turn is a derivative of the Wikipedia logo, Image:Wikipedia-logo.png, which as an official logo is copyrighted by the Foundation and not available under a free license. This is all necessary because the banner is advertising the Wikipedia 1.0 project and so includes their logo; most of the other banners are public domain or under various free licenses because they are either entirely my own work or the images they use are free. Nobody else was going to do it, so I figured I might as well. Read the message I've put at the top of my talk page – I may make the odd contribution from time to time if I happen across something (while looking stuff up, say), but I don't wish to have any further involvement in admin/community stuff. The images themselves are easy – most of them just consist of an icon, a border and some text. All that's needed then is software that can take several frames and make an animated GIF out of them, as well as doing effects like the fades. • Can you put the ads on other wikis?--Jakerl 02:21, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
Provided you comply with the licensing terms of the individual ads (which vary from one ad to another, due to their use of various images under different licenses), there's not a lot I can do to stop you; credit would be appreciated but is not mandatory. To upload an ad to another wiki, save it to your computer and then upload it via that wiki's upload page. If you were intending to upload to a Wikimedia wiki, please upload it to the Wikimedia Commons (you'll need to create an account there first) instead, as this allows them to be used by all Wikimedia wikis. Wherever you put them, please make sure that you preserve the summary and licensing information – everything I've done is in the public domain, but where I've used other images this is a required for copyright reasons.
Also, please bear in mind that almost all of the ads are very much specific to the English Wikipedia, as they refer to WikiProjects and processes that only exist here. Thanks – Gurch 19:28, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
By 'page', do you mean the description on Template:Qxz-ads? If you create and upload an ad, then you can add your username to the list of people who've created ads. Though you may want to check with me after uploading it, so I can make sure the template itself is changed properly (it's a little complex). Thanks – Gurch 19:28, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: IP block and Userpage

You're the one responsible for the ads? Well done! :D

Also, I like your idea, thankyou for saying Wikipedia is not Myspace - I wanted to avoid that exactly, making a userpage that was braggardly or in some other way attention-whoring and not really about the Wikipedia project. If you or Luna could tell me how to forward User:Horst.Burkhardt to User_talk:Horst.Burkhardt I'd really be much obliged.

Also, thankyou for responding so promptly and clearly to my question about redlining. :)

I've done this to your userpage for you; if in future you wish to turn your userpage into an actual page rather than a redirect, follow a link to it, find where it says "Redirected from User:Horst.Burkhardt" at the top of the page, click that, then click "edit this page". Alternatively, add "?action=edit" to the end of the URL, like thisGurch 16:26, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

The category dates back to the Siegenthaler incident, and was created specifically to accomodate the fact that the Siegenthaler article was going to appear on CNN that day, and it was imperative it not appear in a vandalized form (which would have been a disaster). Since we forsaw that being a problem in the future we created a protection template for it, along with all the fixings. The point is that if we know an article is going to make a high-profile appearance and we need to guarantee that it's pristine at that moment we protect it to ensure that.

It's a rare event, but it's one that absolutely should be planned for, and it makes a clear exception to the category policy, which was quite clearly intended to deal with dead categories, not peculiar administrative categories. Phil Sandifer 17:36, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Where is this template? I don't see it on Template:Protection templates or in Category:Protection templates. This sounds suspiciously like something you created for your own personal use, or the use of a small group of people, that administrators in general aren't aware of. This is never a good thing. Note also that things have changed since 2005, and in more recent cases (Colbert, for example) the situation has been dealt with simply by protecting the page as normal – Gurch 18:44, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
I see... AzaToth turned it into a redirect – which was the correct course of action, in my opinion, though he should probably have pointed it at the "full protection" template rather than the "semi-protection due to vandalism" one. I'll further reinforce the notion that things have changed since 2005 by pointing to the fact that it is now possible to set an expiry time for page protection, and the current series of protection templates have an expiry parameter intended to be used in such circumstances.
So. Suppose Jimbo was appearing on CNN tomorrow, and they were going to show the Foo article. An admin would hop over to the article, check it wasn't vandalised, protect it with the summary "Appearing on CNN tomorrow, needs to be free of vandalism", set the expiry time to two days in the future, and add {{pp-protected|expiry=17 April 2007}}.
Let's see if this is satsifactory. The page is certainly protected and free of vandalism. Newcomers can see that this is the case by looking at the template, and can see that they would normally be able to edit the page, and that if they wish to, they can come back in two days' time. Administrators or other experienced users wondering about the reason for protection can check the log and see exactly why it was protected. Was it even possible to specify a protection reason in the log at the time of the Seigenthaler incident? I seem to remember it wasn't – this alone seems to render a separate category and template unnecessary – Gurch 10:38, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Please do try to assume good faith - this is not "something created for my personal use." I haven't touched the template since the templates got re-organized, so I can't readily tell you where it went. (It was Template:P-protected which is now a redirect. As for Colbert, that was a different circumstance - the specific problem with Siegenthaler was that the page was going to be shown on CNN, live, in its current version, and Jimbo specifically protected it because he was going onto CNN. (You can find this in the protection history for the article if you want.) Colbert wasn't displaying a page live with advance warning. The idea of this template is so that we can take a page onto television without having to worry about it becoming a vandalism target - a huge deal with Siegenthaler because that was a major vandalism target at the time.
It's a rare case, as I said, but to speedy delete because it doesn't fit the rules exactly is an example of overly literally interpreting the rules at its worst. There may be reasons to remove the template and category, but they are not speedies by any useful definition of speedy. Phil Sandifer 00:04, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
While not relevent to the point of the discussion, you may be interested to know that in fact I can't find that protection in the protection history for the article, because in May 2006, all previous log entries were quietly obliterated. See the log for yourself. While the page history extends back to December 2005, at that time page protections didn't also get an entry in the of the page history as they do now – so even the luxury of being able to view deleted edits wouldn't reveal it. My attempts to find the missing log entry on another page led to a dead end – and the discovery that Freakofnurture thinks it appropriate to store deleted page histories of controversial articles in a subpage of his userspace named "crap", but I'll let that drop.
So much for transparency.
Anyway, if you feel there is a need for the template and category, fair enough. I'm getting close to giving up on this category reorganization altogether, as it just takes too much effort to get anything done. As you're an administrator and I'm not, any attempt at a CfD would be an exercise in futility on my part (do you see now why I tried to have it speedied?), so I'll leave the discussion here. Thank you for your time – Gurch 12:53, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks I forgot about that being there.

Gurch, Thanks for the comment, I'm going to be off line for about 10 hours, but will reply back to you then. — xaosflux Talk 12:13, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Made some updates on this, effectively transcluding the new template with an additional variable. Please take a look at it and let me know what you think. Thanks, — xaosflux Talk 01:32, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
