Baring-Gould

It's just that it's an article about Sabine Baring-Gould, not an article about Pygmalion. You make a good point that Baring-Gould is obviously can't be the only inspiration for the play, and I did change the wording of the section to reflect it. But if people are curious about further sources for Pygmalion, they should follow the link to that article.

I came to the article because I was working on another article about a short story called "The Rats in the Walls", which is thought to have been inspired in part by Baring-Gould's Curious Myths. It's not the only work that's been cited as an inspiration, but I don't see any point in mentioning those other works in Baring-Gould's article. Do you?

It's true that the claim about Pygmalion is not well-sourced. I assume it's from the Warwick School history that is cited in the references. Nareek 23:49, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

River Ashburn

I think you will find there are no notability criteria established for geographical features. So your suggestion that this article to be deleted due to the size of the river is unlikely to be accepted. Best Wishes Saga City 14:46, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

As a point of interest did you check just how many "rivers" have pretty much the same text and are stubs in the area? The editor didn't managed to get the categories right either. --Herby ^{talk to me} 15:20, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

But this is exactly what stubs are for. They are like seeds; some grow, some die and others wither away. The comment about categories is not part of this argument unless you are implying that this is evidence that the contributor is failing in some way. Saga City 20:46, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

PS---try not to call other people's takes on Wikipedia "silly." I did not take offense and I know that you meant none, but some people do tend to get a bit hot under the collar and would be offended. Its just a good rule of thumb to ensure that you can work on articles undustracted by those that tend to get huffy (you can scroll through my talk page archives for examples). The Yorkshire thing (and I don't mean the pudding)

My guess is that it would survive an AfD (AfD is generally not considered to be the best solution for crap articles written on ok topics), do it seeming to be somewhat worthy of inclusion on some level. However, the pov in the article is, well, um, pov. My suggestion would be to work on removing the pov language yourself, It'll be good practice for you, as every experienced Wikipedian has had to salvage an article like this in the past in the name of the greater good, altruism, no one else is going to bother, etc.

If the author gives you any "I appreciate your work, but I work for them and I know how it should be" crap, try to explain to them the 'pedia's policy on POV and adverts. Be constructive and friendly, but firm. Anyways, good luck and don't be afraid to ask any more questions in the future. We are all in this together. Lustleigh Edits

Thanks for your feedback on the Lustleigh edits. Sorry if it sounded harsh. i have read the style guide, and i agree that historically, the article may have contained a fair amount of POV writing. That said, i think your axe was a little heavy handed and you left the article in a state which meant it didn't make a lot of sense. Looking up a village and finding a considerable treatise on Church bells isn't necesarily logical. I also thought it was a little strange to cut out references to village amenities - in context with the UK trend for not having this amenities, the presence of them is therefore unusual, and worthy of inclusion.

I agree with tidying up the article from a POV style. As far as histroy goes, as soon as get round to adding history of the village, i'll put that before "The Village Now", but the church bells should definately be further down the Wiki - and could even deserve their own Wiki page - what do you think?

Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Yeah, even with a bot auto-archiving this talk page, it's almost too much to deal with.  :) I wasn't involved in the decision to block this user and there's not much I can add other than what's available in the contrib logs and on the talk page. I know this person had a history of copyright and fair-use issues and created abusive sockpuppets to get around the block and continued to show no understanding of what he was doing incorrectly. You'll probably have more luck with Mangojuice (talk · contribs) who was more directly involved. --Yamla 15:34, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I got involved when I noticed a speedy deletion tag on a stub Fidika had created. It was not an exact copy, more like a paraphrasing, so I sent it to AfD. It turned out Fidika had been taking entries on Samurai from www.samuraiarchive.com and putting them on Wikipedia. He made an effort to reword them somewhat, but they were bascally copied. The AfD listed someting like 30-50 articles, but there were absolutely TONS more. Take a look at User:Nihonjoe/Samurai for the project Nihonjoe and I embarked on by which we could delete these copyright violations. We've deleted over 800 of these articles in which Fidika was basically the only contributor. The mere scale of that should have been enough to justify Fidika's block, but there was more: despite all our attempts to explain copyright issues to Fidika, he was still copying things. Basically, he took all the rules as saying "you can copy if you do X" and so he would make a half-hearted attempt at X in order to do the copying he wanted to do. And he was still making large, fast, highly original contributions, which worried the heck out of me (although they're still around) - because he paraphrased, I have no idea if those contributions were copied or paraphrased from somewhere, but unlike ordinary users, I could no longer assume they weren't. If you see Fidika on Wikibooks, and he makes any kind of copyright violation, you should give him a very short leash. Mangojuice^talk 13:06, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Copyvio help on commons

Hello I noticed your RfA while looking at my RfA and saw that you are a commons admin so I was wondering if you could help me with something. About a week ago I posted on the commons noticeboard about User:PanchoHardy who it appears to me has uploaded a ton of wrestling images under false licensing while at the same time uploading real free use images via transwiki.

All of the fake images use the same summary which is they are listed as "self-made" however it is blatantly not the case as some of the images have been taken from inside cages, from magazines and various other sources. Although some could pass for truly self-made images such as this I think the best course of action would be a mass delete.

My post on AN has had some replies but nothing seems to have happened in that time and I do not like the idea of this many copyvios on commons, could you help me out? –– Lid^(Talk) 05:05, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

spamlink -> COIBot

I am not sure if you are familiar with COIBot's interaction with the spamlink template (I think so, seen your activity on meta). COIBot is monitoring a number of pages for the addition of {{spamlink}}, and picks up the links in the spamlink template to monitor. If you need additional proof on a link, then it is handy to put in the spamlink template on those pages. At the moment the pages monitored for the spamlink template are Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam, User:AntiSpamBot/Blacklist requests, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard, and MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist (technically cross-wiki). It also picks up the regexes added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist (again, cross-wiki, so if it is blacklisted on the Portuguese wiki, and then spammed to en, COIBot will record and report). Whether it is "compromised" (whatever that means) or not is of little interest to me. If unconstructive edits are repeatedly made from an IP address, it can be blocked. If constructive edits are being made, or there are no edits at all, then I fail to see that anything needs to be done. In either case, the nature of the IP address means nothing; the only thing that matters is whether or not it is shared by many users, as this usually entails shorter block times or anonymous-only blocks. In this case, the IP address has been blocked for a short time once before, and will presumably recieve a longer block if it continues to make unconstructive edits. I neither have the time nor see the need to expend effort running all kinds of checks every IP address whose edits I revert. I issue warnings because people complain if I don't; all I care about is keeping the articles free of unconstructive edits. Thanks – Gurch 15:38, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
