Image copyright problem with Image:Ep1 PC.jpg[edit]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Ep1 PC.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 19:12, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Edit summaries[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary, which you forgot to do before saving your recent edit to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Doing so helps everyone understand the intention of your edit (and prevents legitimate edits from being mistaken for vandalism). It is also helpful to users reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. --M4gnum0n (talk) 18:19, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur.png[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Betty Logan (talk) 19:50, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur.png[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Betty Logan (talk) 05:57, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Fair use of images[edit]

I have some concerns about some of the images you are uploading. "Fair use" has some legal restrictions, and to use images under fair use we must comply with WP:NFCC. The main criterion is that they must be of educational use, which means that the subject of the image must be accompanied by sourced commentary. Since plot summaries are not sourced commentary, fair use images must not be added to plot sections. Another problem is that you are replacing lower resolution images with higher resolution images. We purposefully use lower res images to comply with the law. While your images unquestionably look better, that is not a factor: if they look better than they need to be to identify their subject then Wikipedia is breaking copyright law. You have uploaded many fine and useful images which comply with the law, but unfortunately many that do not so I have had no choice but to tag these. Please don't be discouraged though from uploading images, it's just a case of learning the rules.

Another tip is that any US trailer prior to 1978 that doesn't carry a copyright notice is in the public domain, which makes it free content; so when uploading content for pre-1978 films, it is worth checking the Commons for free equivalents, or looking up the theatrical trailer on Youtube and seeing if the trailer inlcudes a suitable image. This is the case with File:Charlton Heston in Ben Hur trailer.jpg. Since we have free content available for that film we do not need non-free images. Betty Logan (talk) 08:33, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Possibly unfree File:Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur.png[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur.png, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Betty Logan (talk) 06:12, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 14[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Grand Moff Tarkin, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Star Wars: The Clone Wars (TV series) (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

April 2013[edit]

  • Please stop changing the boxart at Sonic the Hedgehog (1991 video game). Box art isn't supposed to be changed w/o explanation. If you have an explanation, you should start a discussion on the articles talk page, and only make the change if there is consensus to do so, as there have been several editors who are against this change at the moment.
  • In general, websites like IMDB or Youtube are not considered useable, because they often lack the criteria needed to be considered to be Wikipedia-standard reliable sources. (Its too easy for random users to go and upload bogus information to them.) Try to find a website where the content is provided directed from editors/journalists, with no room for tinkering. (Like IGN or Eurogamer, for example.) Sergecross73 msg me 13:39, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Second warning, stop re-adding this information without consensus. I'm glad you finally started a discussion on the talk page, but you missed the crucial part of don't re-add until there is consensus. Sergecross73 msg me 14:15, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

"Illustrative example"[edit]

Simple asserting in an edit summary that this is illustrative of the subject is insufficient. Please amend the content of the actual article to address the Sith-iness of Maul, his attire, weapon, etc. (cited to sources, of course); otherwise, use of this image in Sith fails WP:NFCC #8. --EEMIV (talk) 11:00, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Man of Steel pic[edit]

If you read WP:FUC and WP:NONFREE you'll see that there needs to be more satisfied than simply "visual representation". First, simply showing the actor can be done with a free image. If it's the actor in the suit then I would say that you should argue for a change in the poster as there was a poster that showed that. There are 10 criteria that need to be satisfied, and the film's poster is the only one that gets away with simply meeting the "visual representation" criteria.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 01:14, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Seeing this comment and mine above from a while ago, LusoEditor, it might be worthwhile to take a look at some featured articles that appropriately use non-free/copyrighted images so you can see the connection between images and article content. --EEMIV (talk) 10:47, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

July 2013[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Lois Lane. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. SudoGhost 01:48, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Information icon Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits, such as your recent edits to File:Jedi Knights.png, as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. SudoGhost 21:02, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Canon[edit]

Whether something is(n't) canon doesn't factor into whether it's appropriate to include at Wikipedia. The notion of canon is in-universe -- things that "did" or "didn't" happen -- but that isn't how this project addresses subjects in fiction. Regardless of whether e.g. Darth Bane "exists" in the canon, he's had several real-world books written that focus on him, and lots of other verifiable, ancillary coverage. Wookieepedia might be preoccupied with Star Wars "truth" and include/omit appropriately, but not Wikipedia.

Probably between the new EU policy and the upcoming films, there will be tons of conflicts between what's previously been canon and what the new stuff is. That's fine, too. Take a look at this section of the Boba Fett article, which addresses EU conflicts pretty well: it acknowledges that there have been mixed messages about his origin, summarizes and cites them, and that's it. Doesn't matter that one is canon and the others aren't.

"Unlearn what you have learned" about canon nit-pickery. It really doesn't matter here. --EEMIV (talk) 19:55, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Use of non-free images[edit]

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to a page, specifically Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, may fail our non-free image policy.
