In regards to your comment on the now-withdrawn AfD, I created the article as a redirect three days ago. The last line in my !vote was my saying that it should be kept as a redirect if consensus decided it was non-notable at that point in time, per WP:CHEAP. Ss112 00:23, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So does that mean every singers' page needs a reference now in that specific area? If it violates Wikipedia policy, please tell me so I can begin adding tags other pages as well. Horizonlove (talk) 00:56, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Horizonlove: Adding unsourced content can be explained at Wikipedia:Verifiability. I've already told you about this here. Magnolia677 (talk) 01:22, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So why doesn't pages like Beyonce have to have them? Horizonlove (talk) 01:43, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Now that User:Johnpacklambert has blanked his talk page (without discussing any of the many questions he's been asked), I thought I'd copy the discussion here, so that I could answer your question.

Please [1] stop [2] AFDing [3] sports [4] biographies [5] without [6] doing [7] appropriate [8] research [9] [10] [11] [12] Thank you. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 17:36, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@PageantUpdater: One of the comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Farukh Abitov described Johnpacklambert's AfD as a "lazy nomination". I've had no luck locating a source confirming that Farukh Abitov passes WP:NFOOTBALL. FIFA doesn't acknowledged that his team, FC Dordoi Bishkek, is fully professional, and none of the teams or leagues Abitove has played on are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Fully professional leagues. I've also been unable to find anything confirming that Kyrgyzstan's national team competes at a tier 1 International level. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:51, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker)@Magnolia677: You've followed WP:BEFORE better than JPL has. At least you looked for sources. And some of the articles he's nominated have sources now; I think some of them did even before he nominated them. I can't say with full confidence that JPL examined whether or not the articles had sources before nominating for deletion. That's bad. pbp 18:56, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker)@Magnolia677:You can see by a glance at Kyrgyzstan national football team that it's tier 1, as it's participating in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. Non tier 1 teams don't do that. Nfitz (talk) 19:40, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nfitz: Do you have a link to a source supporting that the national team Abitov plays on competes at FIFA tier 1? I'm not doubting you, I just couldn't find a source. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:12, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's not so much the team that's tier 1, but the match that's tier 1. Pretty much any game between 2 FIFA-recognized national teams (but not 'B' squads) are tier 1. Tier 2 tends to involve club teams (Liverpool, Barcelona, etc.) and non-FIFA nations (Tibet, Guernsey, Gibraltar (before 2016), Greenland, etc. The list of the 209 FIFA-recognized national teams (for men) can be found here. The FIFA regulations defining Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 matches is here. Nfitz (talk) 21:13, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • If he's not familiar enough with the material to be able to judge notability of leagues etc (which clearly he doesn't) he should leave well enough alone. See also the two comments above mine. That nom was never rescinded. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 20:20, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PageantUpdater: Do you believe Johnpacklambert's AfD was vexatious or in bad faith? Also, your edit history shows no edits to football players. One could ask why you commented at the AfD? Magnolia677 (talk) 20:40, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because I saw the comments above and knowing JPL's history was not surprised. It takes a very basic understanding to be able to judge these articles But it just takes a minute or two of checking, something those who have dealt with him in AFD in the past know he (almost) never does adequately. Lo and behold it's then very easy to discover ill formed AFDs en masse. Either he should commit to understanding the notability guidelines and checking properly or he should leave well enough alone. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 20:49, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • And the rest of my replies to you as well @Magnolia677::
    • Not at all. I was alerted to the AFDs and considered each on their merit. One even got a delete vote. I dare say I did more research into each than JPL clearly did. Before voting to Keep in line with other editors I also made sure their argument checked out. I'm not a sheep but I am determined to protect Wikipedia from this sort of ongoing nonsense behaviour. That involves doing due diligence. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 21:13, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • Re Kyrgyzstan "For the purpose of these regulations, a tier 1 International Match shall mean any International Match in which both of the teams participating are the “A” Representative Teams of the Members concerned, or an International Match involving a Scratch Team." [13] --- PageantUpdater (talk) 21:18, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Magnolia, I'm not sure you're getting the problem PageantUpdater, myself, and others are faced with when dealing with JPL's editing. JPL has a habit of creating AfDs faster than he or anybody else who participates in them can assess the merits of the articles. At a minimum, JPL needs to slow down long enough for the community to have enough time to assess the articles he's nominated. But, since this is nowhere near the first time he's done that (PageantUpdater encountered him first when he flooded AfD with beauty pageant contestant nominations; including a number of very, very poorly conceived ones), I think he needs to be placed under some sort of sanction that curtails his nomination of articles for deletion, at least until he's made it abundantly clear to the community that he knows what he's doing. pbp 21:35, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to come off as an asshole, but I agree. While this user has made many useful contributions to Wikipedia s/he also has aggresivly pushed for articles to be nominated with out thoroughly following WP:BEFORE. The recent spade of article the user nominated for deletion that clearly pass WP:NFOOTY stand as an attachment to this. Inter&anthro (talk) 21:48, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(I had an edit conflict before I could add...) My primary interaction with User:Johnpacklambert at AfD discussions have involved rap music articles, and my impression is that he has an excellent grasp of notability guidelines. AfD's are nasty business. Lots of hurt feelings and finger pointing, but they strengthen the project. Anyway, let's end this, as it's behind the back of another editor (who I happen to have a high regard for). Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 22:06, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, though I'd like to point out it's only behind his back because he blanked the original discussion on his talk page, with the comment "rubbish". Nfitz (talk) 22:12, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
For the sake of not bombarding Magnolia677's talk page and other reasons I suggest we all WP:DROPIT and move to the administrator's noticeboard to discuses these issue in a more appropriate setting and context. Thanks Inter&anthro (talk) 22:46, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 22:49, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I called the discussion rubbish because PageantUpdater once said I should stop commenting on the internet and go wash toilets. His comments tend to be extremely caustic and needlessly insulting. Then there is Purpublebackpack who regularly ignores the directive to keep off my talk page and once tried to seak a plan to ban my editing of Wikipedia by by opening it on Christmas day. These people are Wikipedia hounders who seem to feel that participating in discussions on Wikipedia is a violation of something if you do not kow tow to their line of thinking.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:29, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(1) At what point are you going to realise I am a SHE not a he? (2) I never said such a thing and find the accusation disgusting. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 04:36, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
JPL, you have this bad habit of dishing out very caustic criticism, but not being able to take criticism that's not even half as offensive as that which you give. And in the time I've dealt with you, you haven't grown as an editor. You've traded singlehandedly poisoning category-space/CfD for making dozens and dozens of poorly-thought-out AfDs. In between, you got into a highly contentious row with Amanda Filipacchi that, had 80% of other users done the same thing, would've been indeffed. So, yes, I am continually displeased with your behavior. And don't try to say "it's my way of thinking". Generally, the reason I or anybody else asks you to do or not do something is because there's a policy or guideline that says do or don't do that thing. Somebody points it out to you and you get deeply offended; you consider even the slightest critique to be horrendously rude, and focus on that rather than whether or not the suggestion has any merit. That's one of two constants with you over the years. The other is that you continually let personal opinion about a topic trump policy or guidelines. pbp 05:33, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there,

Thanks for the talk. Regarding the change I made, I noticed that the population figure was the population within city limits, not the Capital District metro area, so I changed accordingly. The citation used led to a dead link, so I left it there. If you can find a more up-to-date source, that would be great.

DYK for Oroville Dam crisis

[edit]

On 28 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Oroville Dam crisis, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that nine million fish were rescued from the Feather River Fish Hatchery during the 2017 Oroville Dam crisis (pictured)? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Oroville Dam crisis), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Moonsdebut8

[edit]

Hey Magnolia, since you patrol users and unsourced changes to hip hop articles, I thought you might want to keep a watch on the user Moonsdebut8. During this month, they've been on a spree of passing off iTunes charts as Billboard charts on Remy Ma discography and Shether (disregarding WP:BADCHARTS), and adding unsourced content and fabricating releases of albums on both Olivia (singer) and Olivia discography. The process goes on for about a week or two, and then an experienced editor reads all the comments and makes a decision. It's all explained at Wikipedia:Deletion policy. Magnolia677 (talk) 17:18, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Apix, Florida article.

[edit]

Hello, As I do enjoy writing Florida articles, I found a ghost town called Apix, Florida that I am potentially going to create. It appears that it was a rocket testing facility that was used during the 1950s and it was a fake town. Would you classify this as a ghost town or a rocket testing facility?

@Cassini127: I replied, then did more research. It seems to have been a rocket test facility with a fake name, according to this source. It fooled a lot of people. There are several older sources that refer to "Apix, Florida" as a real place. It doesn't seem as if anyone ever lived there, so likely not a ghost town. Great find. Very interesting. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:43, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Would an article on the facility be appropriate? This is intriguing. John from Idegon (talk) 21:50, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In re: Anson Co. NC

[edit]

Dear Magnolia677, What source exactly is needed to correct the out of date information regarding Anson County's congressional district? My findings have been that almost every county in North Carolina is now out of date in terms of correct congressional district and I am going through correcting that. You have much more experience in this kind of thing so I will defer to you. Andrew Melendez (talk) 21:48, 13 March 2017 (UTC) Andrew[reply]

(talk page stalker)A newspaper article that describes (preferably with illustrations) the boundaries would do well. The main paper in Raleigh would do well and said article should refer to its source. A primary source is not needed nor would it really be any better. John from Idegon (talk) 01:32, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Most states have articles on the US congressional districts. If you're talking about the US Congress, you could check the specific district articles for accuracy on the subject and simply refer to those articles by Wikilinking. John from Idegon (talk) 01:37, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I suggested on Andrew Melendez' talk page just a note in the edit summary telling other editors to check the wikilink for details. There's so much random number changing by vandals the a good faith editor needs to be explicit about why they are doing something and where to look to confirm it. Maps

[edit]

Visual learners do not need maps, better to have nothing, someone might accidentally learn something.Abel (talk) 02:18, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Id4abel: The structure of city and county articles have been agreed upon by consensus. WP:USCITIES is a good outline of what should and should not be in an article. I'm sure you put a lot of effort in to creating your maps, but you really should have discussed it first on one of the notice boards. Adding an enormous map of surrounding counties to a city article is off topic, and not likely what the reader of the article went there for. Also, a 2009 study pretty much discredited the validity of learning styles. Magnolia677 (talk) 02:52, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You can easily change the size of the map: | width = whatever.
Listing adjacent counties in text is so much better than showing where those counties are in relation to each other, more interesting as well. “Adjacent jurisdictions include: Arlington County, Virginia – north, Fairfax County, Virginia – west and south, District of Columbia – northeast, Prince George's County, Maryland – east.” Riveting stuff. Safer to delete the maps. Abel (talk) 03:41, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I should have looked up the Simplified ruleset under Creating and editing articles as it clearly states 1. Neutral point of view, 2. Verifiability, 3. No original research, 4. Be bold in updating, and 5. Do not add anything that might be useful to someone seeing the article without first going to the talk page and waiting for an unspecified number of people to give their approval. @Cityscaper: Thank you for updating the data. Because you did not update the access date to the source you used, I assumed it was unsourced. Your data is in the page history. Feel free to add it again with an updated link to your source. Your talk page has numerous cautions about adding unsourced content, so you may wish to be very careful of this. Your misrepresentation of sources at AFD

[edit]

Reviewing administrators, such as myself, do not appreciate the misrepresentation of facts at AFD. Your replies at this AFD, claiming that this NPR source did not talk about the group, when it is clearly a focus story on the group (and even uses the name "The Chopstars" in the article, which you claimed was not the case while quoting the line directly before this: "The artists behind The Chopstars honor and extend Screw's legacy with their own works, including versions of Frank Ocean's Blonde and a drowsy mash of Solange's A Seat At The Table with Beyoncé's Lemonade."). I'd have assumed that you just hadn't followed WP:BEFORE, but since you've adamantly claimed otherwise at the AFD I'm fairly confused as to why you would have thought a reviewing admin wouldn't click on those refs. Perhaps you could explain what's going on here, am I missing something? Coffee // have a cup // beans // 04:46, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Coffee: It was my entirely my oversight not to included the next sentence which makes one trivial mention of "The Chopstars", and not some nefarious attempt to misrepresent. My apology.
That NPR source describes how Moonlight (2016 film) featured "a Chopped And Screwed Version Of Its Soundtrack". It does not appear that "The Chopstars" created the soundtrack for that movie; just that the movie featured a chopped and screwed genre of music. In fact, the NPR article appears to be about the "chopped and screwed" musical genre, not about a group called "The Chopstars" which--along with many other musicians--perform that genre. If the NPR article was about The Chopstars, it certainly would have included more than once sentence about The Chopstars.
If you look at The Chopstars#Discography, you will notice that only one of the five links there even mentions "The Chopstars".
At The Chopstars#See also, the article Beast Mode (Juvenile album) makes no mention of "The Chopstars".
This group has no charted songs (see [14]), and does not appear to have been nominated for any significant awards. There also appears to be trivial mention of "The Chopstars" in various sources. In fact, at the AfD I specifically asked for secondary sources to support notability.
The Chopstars fails WP:ORG, WP:BASIC, WP:ANYBIO, and WP:MUSICBIO. At best, this article should have been merged with chopped and screwed.
Again, my apology for my oversight. But if I may ask you, as the closing administrator who clearly scrutinized the sources cited, do you consider dead links and one sentence-long mentions of this group to be reliable secondary sources? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 11:39, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I was not the closing administrator. I was in fact in the process of doing it when another administrator closed it (my closing script notified me of this). At any rate, we both had the same view of the outcome of the discussion due to the limited comments: that no consensus could be drawn. Coffee // have a cup // beans // 19:14, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Coffee: Yes I see you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/DJ Candlestick as "no consensus". At that AfD, two experienced editors, myself and User:Johnpacklambert, provided detailed reasons why the article was not notable, while an editor with just 37 total edits attempted to keep it. That article fails WP:BASIC, WP:ANYBIO, and WP:MUSICBIO, yet there it is. Over a month ago I made this SPI report about an editor I suspected of being a sock of a notorious rap music spammer. It's still in the cue. Kodak Black gets well over a million views per year, but writing it gave me hardly the pleasure of writing Scotch Block, Ontario yesterday. The endless reverting of unsourced edits to that mess of non-notable rappers isn't much fun anymore, so best to move away and have more fun. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:09, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
