Gulf Cartel

You have done a very nice job on the Gulf Cartel article! Cheers, BatteryIncluded (talk) 14:58, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

By the way, when there are arrests of lower-ranking lieutenants, or some remarkable shootouts, and related miscelaneous news, we are placing into the article named Timeline of the Mexican Drug War, so that the reader is not encumbered by dozens of nearely irrelevant arrests of the lower cartel management. That is where I moved your latest entry on the arrest of "El Yupo" I hope you are OK with this. Cheers, BatteryIncluded (talk) 23:07, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Just a quick note to express my gratitude of you looking after the mexican drug war related articles and biographies. I have been quite ill for a few months and am just recovering from heart surgery. It is reasuring to see you deal with the ongoing vandalism, researching and improving the articles. Keep up the good work. I will keep dropping in every now and then to help in small ways. Cheers, BatteryIncluded (talk) 16:35, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Absolutely! Los Zetas have their origins with the Gulf Cartel so they share the same historical background. Take care, BatteryIncluded (talk) 01:54, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind words. And I really wish you a speedy recovery. Never forget that I'm here if you ever need anything. Thanks for looking at the articles as well. And welcome back! ComputerJA (talk) 04:59, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

gunwalking

I started ATF gunwalking scandal and redirected Operation Wide Receiver. I gave it a good start and outlined what I think the rest of the article could look like.Hazydan (talk) 11:34, 16 October 2011 (UTC

Sweet! Good job. It looks way better than it used to look with the operation articles. I'll make sure to make it widespread among other users so they can contribute. Thanks a lot! ComputerJA (talk) 16:20, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes, very nice work, I agree. ComputerJA, based on the comments you made at Talk:ATF gunwalking scandal I thought you might appreciate being made aware of a straw poll I implemented at Talk:Operation Fast and Furious concerning the proposal to merge the "O.F.F." article into ATF gunwalking scandal. If so, will you please inform other editors who've previously indicated an interest, as well, since this isn't really my topic area? Thanks,  – OhioStandard (talk) 08:50, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
I will. Thanks for promoting this, OhioStandard. I'll take care of it. ComputerJA (talk) 19:46, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Good on you, then, ComputerJA, and many thanks "back at you", as well, for following this up. Cheers,  – OhioStandard (talk) 04:36, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for keeping an eye on the article. You made an edit a few days back stating that Jaime Zapata was killed by a walked gun. In spite of some people's suspicion earlier this year, I'm not sure this is correct or backed up by the cite (does it actually say he was killed by a F&F gun?). See Talk:ATF gunwalking scandal. Hazydan (talk) 21:50, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Hey, you're right. I actually took a look at the articles (both in Spanish and in English), and although some Spanish articles seem to claim it indeed MAY have been a F&F weapon, and are leaning more to that idea, the English ones claim that they were mere speculations. Sorry about that, bud. I'll take care of the changes in the Jaime Zapata article right away. Thanks for cathing that. You deserve a barnstar. Let me know if anything comes up. Please use reliable sources

What you added to the lead of McAllen, Texas was inappropriate,[1] in my opinion. Your sources were not reliable for the statements you inserted. Perhaps it would serve as a useful reminder if you looked over Wikipedia:IRS#Some_types_of_sources. Jesanj (talk) 08:12, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

How about if I use these sources? [2] This one shows that the McAllen area has been one of the fastest growing urban areas over the past two decades. I also researched and found that McAllen (as of this year) is among the cheapest places to live in the U.S. [3] It is also among the best places to retire in the nation, according to a 2011 U.S. News. [4] It was ranked as the 4th best performing city in Texas.[5] The only one I'm not so sure about is the one of the pro-business climate. The McAllen Chamber of Commerce, however, mentions that the city has among the best climates to do business.[6] And, it is worth mentioning that Texas ranked #1 for it that same year.[7] What do you think?
Do any of these sources look good to you? I think they're from recent, creditable sites. Let me know, bud. ComputerJA 20:21, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
(Quick ignorant reply.) If they are reliable sources then they are worth adding, IMO. There is a section in McAllen on the economy. I'm curious, however, to what extent excess Medicare spending in McAllen (unwarranted variation) is a factor in boosting the growth. And to what extent is the poverty a factor behind why it is a cheap place to live? We need to think about the whole picture, and try to tie things together with context and reliable sources (but not original research). We're not here to collect lists, primarily, but to write high-quality prose. Thanks for your reply and thanks for your research. I share your concern with the article adopting the language of the Chamber of Commerce. Pro-business climate is a peacock term/WP:WTW in my opinion. FWIW, I'm interested in health care in the United States. FYI, yesterday I wrote this, which relates to my interest in McAllen. Jesanj (talk) 21:24, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Sigifredo Nájera-Talamantes

On your recent edit HERE, do you have a citation for the change? As recent as 03/23/2009, Univision [8] listed him as Golf-Zetas operative. Do you have a citation indication which way he went after the 2010 Gulf-Zetas split? That appears to be your basis for the change. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 23:05, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Actually, the same seems to apply to various other changes you recently made, such as Flavio Méndez Santiago. It would be best to have a citation for each one of the changes, as news sources had last identified these drug lords as Gulf-Zetas. If we lack a citation it would be necessary to leave the articles with the information that can be verified, per WP:V Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 23:11, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

I do. For Sigifredo Nájera-Talamantes it's this one: [9]; For Flavio Méndez Santiago it's this one: [10]. I'll make a Category for Los Zetas traffickers, too. I think it's better if there's a different category for each drug cartel (unless the traffickers were captured or killed before their rupture in February 2010). Let me know if anything comes up. Thanks for stopping by. ComputerJA (talk) 23:19, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Honestly, adding picture on Wikipedia is one of the things I barely have experience on. I just know how to add pictures I have taken on my own, or pictures that are from the U.S. federal government. Do you plan to upload a picture you took, or is it from a webpage? I'm sorry for not answering your request. You can take a look at this Wikipedia:Uploading images for more information. Take care. Flags

Hi. Thanks for your message. If you look at WP:ICONDECORATION guideline you'll see it says;

"Avoid adding icons that provide neither additional information (what the icon looks like itself is not additional information unless the icon is the subject of the article) to the article subject nor navigational or layout cues that aid the reader. Icons should serve a purpose other than solely decoration."

and MOS:FLAGS guideline says;

"Words as the primary means of communication should be given greater precedence over flags".

In the case of the 2011 Monterrey casino attack article, the countries that the person/statement came from is already stated, so adding the flags only amounts to decoration that detracts from the text. It doesn't actually help convey additional information, and doesn't help the reader navigate the article. It's not as if there are quotes from every country and the reader might scan the page for a particular flag. It's not as if the article was an international competition with each quote "flying the flag" for their particular country.

Personally I'd say that the December 2011 Nigeria bombings is equally at fault. These flags give the country reactions prominence over others, such as those from domestic and religious organisations. They may not merit this prominence. Is the reaction of  Japan more notable than that of the Islamic Circle of North America? --Escape Orbit (Talk) 19:14, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Spanish dates conversion

I notice that you imported references perhaps from Spanish Wikipedia. You may be interested to know that, for my own convenience, I wrote a script to convert these into English which you may find useful You can load the script, and the activation button will appear in the sidebar of your edit screen. Instructions as follows:

  • Assuming that you are now using the new skin... Open/create your vector.js page by clicking on this link.
    • Alternatively, go to your user page and append '/vector.js' to the end of the URL.
If you are still using the old skin, open/create your monobook.js page, by clicking on this link.
If you make a straight copy of this script, instead of "importing" it, you may not benefit from the enhancements and bug-fixes that are made from time to time. In the latter case, you may choose to watchlist this page so you will know when to update your cache for modifications to this script.
  • Copy the following command onto your vector.js or monobook.js page:
    importScript('User:Ohconfucius/script/foreigndates.js'); //[[User:Ohconfucius/script/foreigndates.js]]
  • Save the page and (re-)load it – refresh the cache by following the instructions at the top of your vector.js or monobook.js page.
  • Bookmark the script page. This will be your cue to purge the cache on your browser for any updates to take effect.
  • Regards, --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 07:22, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I love football, but I haven't been following it as much as I'd love to, honestly. I've made a few edits on the Mexican players, but nothing significant. College kept me too busy, and it's been hard for me to stay on top with school, politics, the news, and football. I'll definitely join the project, but I guess I'll just be open for Spanish-to-English translations at request (since I feel that I cannot contribute with the insight and background knowledge that I used to have before 2008). Miki Roqué - Reply

Hey how's it going? I think we need to make some amends, because you continue to refer to EARLY YEARS when he was already a professional. "Early years" is just for his UE Lleida beginnings, then he signed IMMEDIATELY with Liverpool.

Then, we can continue to refer to "Liverpool" when he played for other clubs because he BELONGED to Liverpool, he was loaned. In 2009, he was released and joined Real Betis, which already has its due section. And i don't think the dash is wrong because i have seen it in tons of articles.

    Photo replacements

Hi and thank you for your message. Could I please be allowed to quote you? "The picture simply serves to illustrate what parts of Italy a crime group operates in. ". If this is the purpouse of the map, it is uncorrect. Camorra (like other criminal groups) is not solely operating in Campania, but also in other Italian regions, like Lombardia, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, and generally speaking anywhere there is the opportunity to make money. So, if the purpouse is showing where that criminal organization is operating, those regions should also have to be reported in red in the map. Also, since camorra is operative in UK, USA (as reported by the article) and also in Spain (I have support materials for this), these territories should have to be added too. IMHO, since it is not easy to collect all the territories where this (as other) criminal organization(s) are operating, I feel it would be better to use some other iconographic reference for illustrative purpouses, or, if you want to maintain the geographical approach, to update the image. Thank you again--Ferdinando Scala (talk) 21:40, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. You're right on the fact that we should not include all the areas where they operate. In that case, isn't the map simply illustrating the area in Italy where the criminal group originates from? What other proposals do you have for the map? Italian crime groups are not in my area of expertise, so I'll definitely need your help in this project. Thanks! ComputerJA (talk)
Hi, I'm happy to help, if I can :-)!
As I can read from the Italian equivalent of this page, it is even still contentious that the origins of Camorra could be for sure traced to Campania region. According to some hypotheses reported on that page, it could have been originated in Cagliari (Sardinia) as a "criminal police" used by Aragona dinasty's authorities to maintain the control of the port and slums; and successively transferred to Campania when this region, then part of the Kingdom of Naples, fell under the control of Aragona family. Under these hypothesis, the map is unfit all right.
As I said, it is also difficult to exactly trace all the places where Camorra is exploiting its criminal actions (it is not like they make advertisements you know :-) ), and therefore any choice we could do about their representation in a map would be partially correct at best.
So, my working hypothesis (and this was the sense of my intervention) is that, while being under this uncertainty, and the need of making the image accompanying the title as representative of voice's matter as possible, it is better to use the image of some well-known mobster, or the photo of some process against these criminals. What do you think?--Ferdinando Scala (talk) 16:19, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't know if it's of interest to you, but you've probably expanded the Morales Perez article to where you could put it up for DYK. Thanks for your work expanding that one-- Khazar2 (talk) 23:39, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Yep, I think so. I only debolded the second link so people wouldn't get confused that it was a double nom. (The DYK criteria require much more radical expansion than ITN, so the "List of..." article wouldn't make it.)
If you end up enjoying DYK, btw, it might be a great outlet for the articles you've been creating like Juan Mejía González--a way to get another pair of eyes and some main page exposure, which usually leads to brief help from another 5-10 editors. On the other hand, it can be a bit time-consuming (and occasionally frustrating) to go through the reviews, and do the quid pro quo reviews once you've done your initial 5. Wherever you put it, though, thanks for all your good new content in an under-represented area of Wikipedia. I've enjoyed poking around through the articles you started over the last half hour or so! Thanks for you help! And I'm really going to consider the DYK. I had no idea how the actual thing worked. I'll be reading the guidelines and information about it tonight. Unfortunately, I'll be back in school in only two weeks, so that will definitely slow down my work.
BTW, thank you for your contributions as well. I've noticed that you contribute on a number of subjects. I try my best to get out of the Mexican Drug War-bubble every once in a while to make a few corrections and updates on other articles, but definitely not as much as you do. Keep it up! Thanks--we'll definitely have to do more collaboration in the future. I end up writing about Mexican journalists in particular every now and again, so I'll ping you for another pair of eyes next time I put one up. Feel free to do the same for me. Cheers, Khazar2 (talk) 03:33, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Definitely. Ever since the top editor of the Mexican Drug War retired, I've been writing pretty much on my own. Stay in touch and thank you for the barnstar! See you around. ComputerJA (talk) 05:42, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

    A barnstar for you!

    The Current Events Barnstar
For expansions of our Mexican Drug War coverage, such as Infighting in the Gulf Cartel. Your work in this complicated and under-edited area is invaluable. Khazar2 (talk) 04:15, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

    Incomplete DYK nomination

Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Edgar Morales Pérez at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; see step 3 of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 04:38, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

    Deletions to the MDW timeline

You actions in deleting my contributions to the Mexican Drug War deeply offended me. Apparently you've decided it is you article and you get to decide what can be there with no discussion with anyone else. Litch (talk) 19:13, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

    • My reply is on the Timeline article. Let's stick there so editors can look for the discussion when needed. Sorry for the inconvenience. I hope you can find a solution. ComputerJA (talk) 19:14, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

    Names

Thank you for linking names in the article List of journalists killed in the Mexican Drug War rkmlai (talk) 00:12, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

    • No problem. I don't know why I didn't do it earlier. Thanks for being the first one. ComputerJA (talk) 00:26, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
