Devil's Marbles

Hi, You've put a link to the Devil's Marbles Conservation Reserve in the article Arrernte. I checked and saw that the Devil's Marbles article mentions the Arrernte, so I presume this is why you put in the link? I think this is incorrect as the Marbles are actually in Kaytetye country. I'm planning to break the list of artists down by subcategory: The duos, groups and project acts are going to the new Category:Dance musical groups listing. asking for comments regarding the exclusion of women in List_of_major_opera_composers

I would like to request comments and suggestions for the following situation in Talk:List_of_major_opera_composers#Not_so_fast.__There_is_obvious_POV_gender_bias_here .This is a very long, complicated situation involving whether women should be included on this list of Opera composers.As a male musician who has done quite alot of research on women in music, I firmly believe that a representative sample should be on the list (I'm not suggesting 50/50 or even 30/70, just two or three representative women).When I first noticed this article, it was completely unsourced, and the "important composers" were chosen by a collegial system ("I like that." "I don't like that") without any mention of sources.I marked the article NPOV and Unsourced.The article quickly became sourced, but I continued to bring up the issue of gender bias and brought three sources to the discussion after consulting the International Alliance of Women in Music [[1]], all of which were dismissed because they only contained works by women.However, when the list was finally completed (I was asked not to participate, as I was considered to be have a POV agenda towards women and living composers), six of the ten lists used only contained the names of men.The other four only contained one woman (Judith Weir).If lists of only women composers are unacceptable, why are lists of only men composers acceptable? And was are sources which could prove the importance of women in music dismissed as having a POV agenda.

A colleague who is a teacher of Women's studies at an American University has suggested that this is a textbook case of "canon forming" or the creation of hierarchies using preconceived notions.The process involvesmaking a hypothesis using the notions that one already has, such as "Important operas are only composed by dead, White, European males", using the sources already utilised for making the hypothesis for proving the statement and then dismissing contradictary sources or discrediting individuals who make statements which oppose the primary hypothesis.

I am certainly not asking anyone to get directly involved here, as this is already become quite violent and an RfA is currently underway.I would however appreciate any ideas concerning how to confront this sort of gender bias, any useful sources and other ideas, as well as general comments.Thank you Jean-Thierry Boisseau 20:53, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Unilateral removal of the history section in ABC article

Hi Paul

We have an unpleasant situation about to develop over this action by one "cyberjunkie" ("cj"), who decided all of a sudden that he'd move the entire History section of the ABC article to a new daughter article, without replacing it with a summary. The history section was almost entirely written more than a year ago.

Since this action on 12 September, the section has languished with no text at all under its title, save a link to the daughter article.The action has, in effect, gutted the article, leaving what appear to be insubstantial fragments without a core. It's must be odd to the newcomer to be denied a summary of the history and to move straight onto a chunky section on "funding and relationship with government" without knowing where how the institution arose.

Now, it's not that I disagree with him that the History section was written in greater detail than you'd normally expect in summary style. (A related issue is that the rest of the article may need to be fleshed out in the opposite direction to achieve satisfactory summary coverage of the topic—perhaps the optimal balance needs to be debated on the talk page.) What I do object to is

• (1) his failure to raise the matter on the talk page beforehand, and
• (2) provide replacement text with the summary style that he's using as his stated rationale for the removal.

The edit comment for the removal was "split (will summarise later)", whereas I'd have been pleased to see a summary written before the removal, for immediate replacement.

I've raised the matter on the talk page, and Cyberjunkie has responded negatively:

I can see that this is getting nowhere. I wonder whether you agree that he should either undertake to write a summary section in the near future (I suggest three or four paragraphs) or reinstate the text and raise the issue on the talk page.

Parkin-Wesley College

I was cleaning up the stubs in Christianity.Parkin-Wesley more appropriately belongs as a a school stub (as it is right now).There is not a sub-category w/in Christianity stubs for schools -- although there might be a sub-category within colleges and universities for private school.Really, I think the "australia-colleges" category is most appropriate for it.The only "school" sub-cat in Christianity is "seminaries," the article did not indicate that this school awarded Masters degrees, although it might fit into a loose definition of seminaries.Your call.Pastordavid 01:50, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Surely a gathering of 1500 young Christians for a week should be worthy of some news article in the last week somewhere. The Australian Scout Jamboree in Elmore, Victoria was on the local television news (WIN News I think) over there. I think it was also on the Melbourne news. Ben Kiernan

I have chose to communicate here to avoid predictable interruptions from reactionaries.

You have asked about Ben Kiernan pertaining to two controversies, the History wars and Khmer Rouge controversey, respectively. Regarding the History Wars, in my submission I only quoted Kiernan's conclusion. If you read the link you will find useful discussion of the history of Quadrant's attempts to cover-up tragedies in East Timor and that of Austrailian aboriginal peoples; but also more specifically four footnoted paragraphs constituting a critique of Windschuttle's position. Kiernan charges Windschuttle with ignoring crucial evidence provided by Reynolds and Rowley, omitting Rowley's many descriptions of "massacres" and "exterminations" of Aborigines, and ignoring an 1836 official report describing an "extermination." In the footnotes Kiernan outlines further abuses by Windschuttle, including the misrepresentation of the work of Jan Critchett and of Kiernan's own early work. The underlying thesis of Kiernan's criticism seems to be that Windschuttle has illegitimately selected a narrow range of evidential material, in the process misrepresenting some of that selected material,for reasons related to an ideological "refusal to concede legitimacy to causes enlisting leftwing support." (ie: land rights and claims based on reparations for historical injustice). see [2]

Regarding Cambodia, Kiernan publicly acknowledged his misjudgements regarding the Khmer Rouge regime over 28 years ago, "although he was hardly uncritical of the Khmer Rouge."The only people who insist that he must live with this stain forever are rabid anti-communist ideologues like Keith Windschuttle. When a similar ideologue from Austrailia, StephenMorris, tried to create a furore over Kiernan's selection as director of the Yale Genocide Project in 1995 the overwhelming majority of the most serious historians in the field publicly "disowned" Morris. Here is a link to their statement where they maintain that "Since 1978, Kiernan has devoted his career to documenting the crimes of the Khmer Rouge. Far from being an apologist for Pol Pot, Prof. Kiernan has been an outspoken and untiring opponent of the Khmer Rouge for seventeen years. (During much of that period, Mr. Morris supported a coalition government-in-exile which was dominated by the Khmer Rouge)." Note that on the list are senior historians from across the political spectrum. Milton Osborne, David Chandler, and Nayan Chanda, being three senior historians commonly meeting the approval of anti-communists. (see [3])BernardL 21:14, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Islam and Sharia in adolescent sexuality article.

Well, it got reverted by a user named Illuminato in a VERY wide cutting revision he did about 6 or 7 hours ago.....

anyways, the debate that ensued is easily viewable on the talk page (Although i am not sure you want to get involved in it)

Although you can feel free to add it, the current layout doesn't seem to support a basic muslim section or basic relegious section, however you DO have some options without significantly reformatting the article.

So, if you wanted feel free to make an article on Islamic views on Adolescent sexuality and sexual behaviour/activity go ahead (I or You could place links in the article, maybe make a simple basic article titled relegious views on adolescent sexuality and sexual behaviour/activity or whatever...

OR you make a section for relegious views on adolescent sexuality etc. in the article and add a muslim subsection.

OR you could readd it to the top of the page somewhere it would fit in... although I'm not sure if it would get reverted, this has been an issue in the past with brief couple revert edit wars involving me and another few people.

Anyways, those are my idea's, feel free to contact me via my talk page. Though I think it would be a Great addition to the article. If it gets reverted then i'll try and help handle it. (Feel free to post your thoughts on the talk page however) Nateland 00:56, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

yes, ok here are my other thoughts

I know next to nothing about muslims except they are divided into Shi'ite and sunni and pray 5 times a day and pray with different hand postures... :-)

So I'm not much use when it comes to personal knowledge, and for research identifying unbiased views (In america it seems a LOT of articles on Isreal, Muslims, Jews Etc. are either biased or support some 'secret' agenda.)

Sorting it out isn't too easy, however for spell check, grammar, dispute resolving, and a few other things i can help.

P.S. or me the whole thing started when I began seriously editing wikipedia and joined shortly after to work on the sexuality section in the main article on adolescence... the battle just keeps on going on and on and on. :-(

Eden Hills, Mitcham Hills, Adelaide Hills, Mt Lofty Ranges

Hi, just in response to your query re whether Eden Hills, being part of the Mitcham Hills, was actually part of Adelaide Hills, or indeed Mt Lofty Ranges.My thinking was shaped as follows:

There is a Wikipedia entry for List of towns in the Adelaide Hills.None of these appear in the list areas covered by the City of Mitcham (eg. see [4]).Other sites (eg. see[5] tend to list towns much further out than the suburbs enclosed in the Mitcham council area.Further, the Adelaide Hills has its own council (see [6]) and naturally is a distinct area to the City of Mitcham.While some tourist websites (eg. [7] list Belair Conservation Park an an attraction in the Adelaide Hills, it nevertheless does not follow that suburban parts of Adelaide such as Eden Hills, Bellevue Heights and Blackwood, as part of the municipal area of Mitcham, and perhaps the Mitcham Hills, should be considered part of either the Adelaide Hills or indeed Mount Lofty Ranges.

I think there's probably a historical context to this as well.When Eden Hills was first settled, it probably was considered a hamlet "in the hills", being a standalone settlement on the Belair railway line.More recently, I believe that common usage may typify Eden Hills as still being in the southern "foothills" of Adelaide.However, I also believe common usage would suggest that the "Adelaide Hills" these days refers not to any suburban areas, but to the townships much further out, as typified by those that are located in the municipal district of Adelaide Hills.Hope this helps!Murtoa 07:08, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

I feel some have a fervour for deletion rather than improvement, I do not understand the belief than "a category"="a list", it is sometimes true. In this case, I'm on the deletion side, but I don't think I have a fervour for it (and I hope my edit history shows a much greater fervour for improvement). I'm supporting the deletion of lists that don't have clear criteria for membership that make the members inherently notable enough to have an article. Simple lists of people who already have articles is what categories do. Lists of people who "could have" articles attract exhibitionists. Lists of people who have jobs (eg MPs, international sportspeople) or have won awards (eg Magary Medallists, Australians of the year) that define them as inherently suitable to have Wikipedia articles are fine. --Scott Davis ^Talk 13:52, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

A way to stop the debate over adolescent sexuality. (Sorta)

See Talk:adolescent sexuality for information on the proposal. It would create a branch off article containing solely views on the subject and hopefully get rid of the POV currently in the articles which are supposed to say what adolescent sexuality is. Not is it good or bad. In my opinion I say let the POV wars take place in an article ABOUT POV. not elsewhere. Tell us what you think at the above link. Nateland 02:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Insertions

I agree that it is OK to omit part of a quote by using ellipses so long as you don't distort the meaning the author was trying to get across by doing so. I disagree that it is OK to insert substantial material, however, even if it is bracketed. In any case you used parentheses and not brackets. The only time it would be OK to insert a word is if you need to change the tense of a word to make it flow better, and then, again, only if it does not distort what the author was trying to say. --Illuminato 18:47, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Goldman, Sacks and the Boys are ... article

I've done a lot of work getting links to American press coverage of this whole issue. I've contacted Natalie Dee for permission to display her parody of Goldman's T-shirt. I've removed the merger tag and explained it in the talk section. I've added tags requesting expansion of the later sections. I was very moved by an article by Larry Brentro, an educational psychologist cited in the Aust Cap Ter ACT Hansard as having been flown out here to educate teachers. A Google serch using boys are stupid puts our Wiki article top of the list, but the rest of the screen is full of Goldman advertising sites. If you know anyone who is familiar with the televised debate between Sacks and Goldman, or could provide a transcript, that'd be very helpful. Alastair Haines 14:45, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Guillermo Arriaga

Mr. Foord,

If I may ask, where did you get the information about Mr. Arriaga creating the screenplay of his film, Amores Perros, from an idea to create 11 shorts? I ask because Mr. Arriaga himself stated in an interview a few days ago that such statement was a lie, and he specifically referred to the article about him in Wikipedia and how it was a lie... I just wanted to check with you. I changed that section of the article already, but I wanted to verify. He said that the idea for amores perros came, not from 11 shorts, but from an idea to create an original, feature length film encompassing three separate stories, and that these three stories were vizualised from the beginning. I appreciate greatly the comments you made at my review. I find that your critisism of my abilities related to AFD is helpful, and I hope to build on those comments. I hope that I can improve after considering your comments. Once again, much appreciated. Also, on a side note -- I do understand your points about nominating the article for dletion too early - I didnt realise how young the article was. If you look through my contributions, I was on a long run of speedy tagging on the New page patrol and I saw this one, had a quick look, and nominated it. Through the efforts made by the "keepers" at the AFD, I see that it should probably be kept. I hope that we are now "good" on this, for you did seem rather passionate about the AFD, and quite annoyed with me as the nominator. I have now read the article, and would not be surprised if it was either deleted or was kept. It now has enough sources to be kept, and enough content, but it may be deleted because of the subject. Concert dance rather than "Dance Theatre"

The attempt was to channelize dance broadly into dance theatre & dancesport. Since ballroom, latin american, club dance (salsa, jive, etc.). are social recreational dances and also competitive, professional dances performed at different championships as dancesport items and ballet (classical, jazz, modern, contemporary), traditional indian (temple ie. kathak, bharatanatyam, odissi, manipuri, kuchipdi & kathakali) dances, persian classical dances are primarily for an audience in the theatre (both amateur & professional), I think that it is the first broad division subject to many other divisions. The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, London shares this view. [[8]] Though it is not the authority on the subject it does make the study of the subject a little more concise & simple.

I am of the view that the term Dance Theatre is akin to Concert Dance except for the fact that Ballroom Dance (listed as a Concert Dance) is a social/participative dance and is a recognised competitive dancesport than a performance/concert dance. Exq bea 02:00, 22 June 2007

Ballet assessments

I am writing to ask what exactly your credentials are with reagards to the art of ballet.

When an article is graded, what is it that is being graded? Is it how well the article adheres to wikipedia policy? Or how important the subject matter is to the art of ballet? Or both
