WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

[edit]

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Just curious

[edit]

Just curious, how did you come by Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Dan Savage bibliography/archive1, if the discussion had already been removed from the main FLC candidates page?

Cirt (talk) 18:47, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Cirt: I was just about to leave a message on your talk page abut that. I saw you mentioning it on several FLCs (exact quote, "having stumbled here from my FLC discussion page"), and saw that it was still open. Never noticed that it had been removed from the page. It seems the bot is being slow. — Status (talk · contribs) 18:50, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quite, understood, thank you! :) — Cirt (talk) 18:52, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious as to why you added the "(album)" dab to the page title, considering that "Speak Now World Tour – Live" still redirects there anyway. Did you do this to differentiate from the article about the world tour (Speak Now World Tour), because if that was the case, a hatnote would have done fine to help any confused readers. Plus, the world "Live" is a part of the album title, also differentiating from the actual tour. QuasyBoy (talk) 04:41, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@QuasyBoy: I requested Speak Now World Tour – Live for CSD months ago and apparently it was declined for some reason. I will try to CSD it again. — Status (talk · contribs) 05:05, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but technically you still didn't answer my question on why the "(album)" dab needs to be there. "Speak Now World Tour – Live" is just fine as the page title for the album. QuasyBoy (talk) 05:11, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@QuasyBoy: It isn't needed, of course. Speak Now World Tour – Live (album) was supposed to be moved to Speak Now World Tour – Live, but for some reason this never happened. — Status (talk · contribs) 05:17, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so you are for the album page just being titled "Speak Now World Tour – Live", right? If you agree, I'm glad were are on the same page then. QuasyBoy (talk) 05:23, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@QuasyBoy: Yes, I'm sorry if that wasn't made clear. I only originally added "album" to the title temporarily until the move went through. — Status (talk · contribs) 05:25, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

HI why you removed the como uma una mujer cd case picture ???? sola$$$$$$$$ (talk) 19:46, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Sola2012: You bought the album, yes, good for you, but you are not the copyright holder of it, thus, it is a non-free image. It should be deleted from Commons, not just from the article. Plus, it serves no purpose being included in the article anyway. Every album has an inside casing. What makes this one so special? — Status (talk · contribs) 19:59, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Think of it more as rearranging, not removing.

[edit]

Hello. Earlier, you sent me a message on the grounds that I "removed" some stuff from All I Have (song). It would help if I told you my actual intentions. I had my editing plans mapped out as follows:

1) The "Controversy and lawsuit" section was intended to be revoked, and all of the content in that section was intended to go into the "Composition and critical response" section, where the content about the "Very Special" sampling is actually seen besides the introduction. 2) The critical response content in the "Composition and critical response" section was to be moved into its own new section called "Critical response". 3) With the lawsuit information, the "Composition and critical response" section was to be renamed "Composition and lawsuit".

I am using the mobile version of Wikipedia on my iPod Touch, which only lets me edit one article section at a time as opposed to the entire article, so instead of just quickly cutting and pasting the stuff, I was forced to remove the lawsuit content from "Controversy and lawsuit", save it, and click the edit button on "Composition" section and replace the lawsuit content back into that section. My philosophy is that you looked at the "All I Had (song)" article and saw the lawsuit information missing before I had replaced it into the other section, and it caused you to rush right into the conclusion that I was trying to just completely get rid of it. I promise you sincerely and solemnly that I was not trying to ruin or get rid of anything at all, rather I was trying to just rearrange it a little bit for the reasons given above. Getting rid of information is the last thing I ever want to do unless it's not true, which, here, it is. If you thought I was trying to get rid of anything, I apologize. Anyone can look like they're doing something mischievous if you catch them at the wrong time. Once you've read this entire message, wait for 5 minutes and then go to the All I Have (song) article (it should not take me more than 5 minutes to make the edits explained above). You'll see that my intentions are not bad. Thank you for hearing me out, or in this case reading me out. I hope you have fun in college and that you graduate and have a great future. See you later, pal.

Hahc21's RFA

[edit]

Hi Status. I admire your enthusiasm and loyalty at the RFA, but I think it might be best to not try to rebut any further oppose votes. It looks quite bad if a candidate's supporters systematically interrogate the opposing voters – even if they are actually correcting a misunderstanding of some sort. Just a suggestion :-). AGK [•] 20:11, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@AGK: Of course. My intentions are not to badger and I am well aware of the politics in it. There have been a couple of opposes that I just couldn't bite my tongue over. I, however, can't make any promises, but I will try. Thanks for the message. — Status (talk · contribs) 22:05, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Filmographies

[edit]

Look, I really hope you don't think I'm doing it to be destructive because I'm not. If you want me to take it to FLC then I will but those columns do not belong on an actors filmography. Instead of saying that the filmography reference is just a "guideline" then where are you even getting the consensus to make the tables look like that? LADY LOTUSTALK 14:54, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Lady Lotus: The list was just promoted to FL status. Meaning that consensus was reached that the table, lead, and everything about the article was acceptable. — Status (talk · contribs) 14:56, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but even the little box on the talk page says "Jake Gyllenhaal filmography is a featured list, which means it has been identified as one of the best lists produced by the Wikipedia community. If you can update or improve it, please do so.". I did bring it to the FLC talk page here if you'd like to weigh in. LADY LOTUSTALK 15:05, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jennifer Lopez

[edit]

Wtf is she doing this era? First she released "Girls" as a promotional single, then released "Same Girl" with a music video - but its not the first single, now she's releasing "I Luh Ya Papi" but cancelling its radio release! Of the three, I preferred "Same Girl" tbh, and it should have really charted. The general public just dont seem to be checking for this chic anymore :( → Lil-℧niquԐ 1 - { Talk } - 14:22, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Lil-unique1: Ugh, I know! It's crazy! It's like they are just releasing a bunch of things to see which sticks and then run with it. Clearly it isn't working. I'm at least happy she's back doing urban music, although it's nowhere close to her previous work. Out of the three songs, I like "Girls" the most. I think the best thing to do is wait for "We Are One" to come out and smash (it's bound to happen), and then follow-up off that success with a new single and then the album. — Status (talk · contribs) 14:29, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I completely agree. I had to make a flying visit to Wikipedia cause I was so excited by so much of the music coming out. To be honest, they're probably doing the right thing. The music is for the fans, she is worth enough money as it is and as long as her projects break even the fans win. She's definitely one of those artists that has a loyal fan-base but doesn't really appeal outside of that. I like the Tyga remix of "Girls". Ive a feeling that will end up on the album. The Maxwell duet should be interesting, I've never been a fan of Maxwell regardless but his voice is quite different to Jen's so I wonder how that will work. I'm just glad the Robin Thicke collaboration was cancelled... she defo doesn't need to be associated with that anytime soon! Also glad that RedOne isn't giving her loadsa dancey stuff! → Lil-℧niquԐ 1 - { Talk } - 14:35, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Lil-unique1: That my have worked and been fine with a label she's been on and released with for years, but considering she hasn't released an album with Capitol yet, I don't think they have much confidence to do that. I wish they'd just put out the album already, but I doubt we'll be hearing it on June 17th. Although they did eventually put on Sky Ferreira's album without a hit... key word being eventually. Why would she even leave Island for Capitol? — Status (talk · contribs) 14:45, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think a big part of her being at Island was L.A. Reid, but when he moved to Epic she lost her label supporter. I couldn't see Epic resigning her. Plus with Corey Rooney now working as a VP of A&R at Capitol, perhaps she saw that as the best next move? I'm glad she didn't join Columbia as she'd be second priority to people like Beyoncé and Adele, equally I'm glad she didn't join Interscope as they're doing awful at the moment. → Lil-℧niquԐ 1 - { Talk } - 16:57, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Lil-unique1: Wow, I didn't know about that! That must be why then. I was so excited to see them working together again, but sadly, he seems to only be producing her vocals, like he did on Brave. — Status (talk · contribs) 00:45, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question

[edit]

Hello, this is completely random but I was wondering if you could tell me how to do a FreezePage or a Web Citation for a Billboard box score article. I've noticed you've done it many times and I'm curious how to do it. Thanks!  — TheMadonnaMusicCN (talk, contribs) 17:46, 26 March 2014 (EST)

Hey @Themadonnamusiccn: All you got to do is go to the website, enter the link you wish to archive in the "URL to Archive [url]:" field and your email address in the "Your (citing author) E-mail Address [email]:" field and then press "submit". They only use your email address to tell you when the archive is complete. I'm not really a big fan of FreezePage, but it's basically the same thing as Web Citation. I prefer the latter. Best, — Status (talk · contribs) 22:02, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Roseland Gaga

[edit]

The first show has happened, I think we might get reviews and pictures soon. Let's expand the article. Another thing I wanted to discuss, do you think this residency should be a part of the Artpop era? If so why can you tell me, i want to understand if I can add it to Book:Artpop. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 05:38, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@IndianBio: I'm not sure I'll have that much time to work on the article, but I'd love to when I am able to. Well, when I was looking for sources about the show, I did find one that says it will promote Artpop and basically be a prelude to her tour, but I don't recall which source that was. — Status (talk · contribs) 05:44, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK Status, I will look after it when I can, but can you once look for that Artpop reference? That will be the only help I need. Another thing, I'm again losing faith in XXSNUG's edits, the continuous hyperbole and the deletionist attitude is really bothering me. I so want to have good faith on him/her. :( —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 06:08, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@IndianBio: I will have a look for it now. Would you mind shooting me off an email, so we can discuss... more privately? — Status (talk · contribs) 06:12, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and how do I do that? —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 06:12, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@IndianBio: Special:EmailUser/Status. I think you have to have an email set to do it, though. On a side note, I found a review. And another review. And another. — Status (talk · contribs) 06:14, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, sending you. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 06:16, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As it turns out, I just came across that ABC review myself and am about to add it to the article. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 06:16, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@IndianBio: I added the reviews to the article's talk. When I find more, I will add them there as well. For the life of me, I can't find the source. @XXSNUGGUMSXX: Thanks. — Status (talk · contribs) 06:19, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

[edit]

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
