Archive

[edit]

I see that you archived your talk page, but I was wondering why you did so before 32 kb (not that there's any hard fast rule against that). As a general philosophy, you probably will want to use the pagemove function in the future to avoid loss of history (or, if you prefer, I can do it for you). In any event, let me know how you're doing and if anything's up. Thanks, Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 23:31, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ariel Sharon

The general rule is, Wikipedia:Use common names. There's only one well-known Ariel Sharon. I've moved the page back. -- Curps 06:48, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Admin School

[edit]

I'm sorry if we don't have a curriculum (it's pretty loose around here), but please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you on your way to becoming an admin. Here's a few things that will help you.

  • Join a Wikiproject and be active there. Esperanza was a good start, but the more you're at, the more active you're seen, and the better shot you'll have. Check out WP:WP for a list of not only those, but also shortcuts to numerous other things.
  • Get 2000 edits. Even though that's not hard and fast, and less significant than it used to be, 2000 is usually the breaking point between a sure thing and a potential loss. There are many, many places that need work, so you should get to 2000 in no time if you just look around.
  • Think of any skills you might have. Foriegn languages, programming, map making, artistry, expertise in a certain area -- all of these make you valuable in WP:RFA.
  • Be courteous, that goes a long way.
  • Edit in as many places as possible. Although most editors tend to focus on one place, it's good to start at RC Patrol, Cleanup and so on.

Hopefully that'll be a good start, i'll be around for more information if you need it, just head over to my talk page. karmafist 10:52, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost

[edit]

If you'd like to report for the Signpost, see the area of the Newsroom where we plan stories. Find something that's happened on Wikipedia this week that you'd like to write about, and "claim" the story by posting in the Newsroom. Make sure not to duplicate a story- articles on the ArbCom elections, Featured articles, new administrators, technological news, and arbitration cases are already written every week, and other writers will post articles they want to write in the newsroom. Thanks for volunteering to help, and I hope to see your first story soon! Ral315 (talk) 10:16, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your story on the Esperanza charter

[edit]

Right now, it's significantly shorter than most standalone articles that we publish. Would you mind if I merged it into News and notes? Ral315 (talk) 15:04, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another note...Flcelloguy usually covers ArbCom election issues, so he'll probably write that for next week. Ral315 (talk) 14:16, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost/Esperanza

[edit]

Hi.

Are you sure we as an organisation are notable enough for the singpost? If so, I'd be happy to answer your questions.

  1. In my opinion, voting isn't everything - election of a Leader/Advisory Council is but a means to an end for me, making this encyclopedia a nicer and less stressful place to be. As to the current voting system, I personally see nothing wrong with it. It's certainly the nicest and most all-inclusive system possible and caused much less stress and heartache than the rectent ArbCom ones. I see no need to change at this time.
  2. The structure of Esperanza? Well, I think it's the most workable system for our needs. A small leadership and plenty of member input. Nothing else I can say really. I hope this helps :) and have a Esperanzially good WikiDay! --Celestianpower háblame 18:14, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RFA policy changes?

[edit]

Feel free to write an article about it, but you are incorrect that this concerns changes in RFA policy. Rather, a wikiwide poll is held to gauge public opinion on a number of issues related to adminship, not necessarily RFA. There may be (in fact, probably will be) one or more policy proposals next week. Radiant_>|< 00:09, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost Story

[edit]

Hey, I was just wondering how Stub catorazation would even be a paragraph long? I really don't understand. Thanks! WikieZach 22:44, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was going to write a little about the importance of effective sorting and how it allows for people to navigate more easily. Then a little about what was done with Category:US school stubs and how it'll help people navigate WP better. Then something about WP:WSS and how people can get involved. Finally, ask for some help on current projects that need help. And that's pretty much it. If other people have similar stories, they could write articles for future weeks on something that has been done to improve organization on WP and how people can get involved with that project. I thought it might give some more body to WP:SIGN in addition to the generic Admin/Beauracrat/Arbitration/Steward-centric news. Perhaps it's not such a great idea, but I thought I would throw it out. Please post your response on my talk page. Thanks. --ʀ6ʍɑʏ89 03:09, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UDUIW

[edit]

I noticed that you added the UDUIW template to your page. Are you interested in joining the group? You do not need to use the template. You could just include the group (if you don't want userboxes on your user page.) If not, I was wondering why you put it here. --Shell 23:04, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Userboxes should be free as long as they do not make a personal insult, racist statement, etc. For example: a userbox saying "this user hates niggers" would be unacceptable. --Shell 23:10, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Edicts from above are a growing concern for those who believe Wikipedia should be what it purports itself to be in newspapers, magazines, and to new members: a community of editors. As a community, we believe that members who have greater power should use that power to promote consensus and a neutral point of view. When an administrator abuses his or her greater power to promote self interest or personal POV against or without the consent of the community, we believe that member should lose his or her administrative or higher powers. Would you be interested in starting and/or promoting a Wikipedia:No confidence area for the purpose of demoting administrators and above who use their power to push personal POV?

In such an area, any editor could call for a show of support or no-confidence for an administrator or higher. People would sign for either support or no-confidence along with examples of the editor in question creating an edict without consensus, or a statement of why they believe the alleged edicts are in line with community consensus. Please feel free to start or add to Wikipedia:No confidence and to duplicate this message or tell other editors who want to see Wikipedia succeed. --KIMP (spewage) 19:29, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your articles

[edit]

Your article about Esperanza was slightly premature- we've reported on plans to change their charter before, and there really isn't much of a story yet. And your userbox article was, in my opinion, very biased and extremely unnecessary given that the issue isn't that controversial. I apologize that I didn't make a note of this on your talk page. About Jimbo

[edit]

Maybe I should clarify a little better how to deal with Jimbo. He has ultimate power within his own website, but he uses it very, very little. He is not putting his foot down on the userboxes, at least not like he could if he wanted. Also, I have seen do something outside-of-process, and then upon polite request reverse himself. The point is, if you have a beef with him, talk to him about it, and he's quite likely to respond and discuss—but there's no way, really, to take him head on. -- SCZenz 19:43, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom case against me

[edit]

I am giving you notice that I will soon start an Arb.Com. case about userboxes and you overstepping your power in limiting them. Thank you. WikieZach 18:19, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's pretty funny since I haven't limited them in any way. But you know, whatever, knock yourself out. Don't let truth slow you down. --Jimbo Wales 16:13, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Confused

[edit]

I guess I'm confused. This is none of my business I guess so feel free to tell me to butt out but here's some advice in the form of questions... You're participating in the supreme court proposal, which would be a body above ArbComm, but on the 28th you asked Fred what the ArbComm does, and you've also volunteered to clerk. I think before you clerk, you need to study the ArbComm a lot closer. The same goes for proposals for bodies above ArbComm. Maybe that would help answer the objections raised about how the proposed Supreme Court is apparently not different than ArbComm... Hope that helps. You can answer here, I prefer to watch talk pages I comment on. ++Lar: t/c 20:31, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I asked him to get a better idea of what they do. I already know, just getting it from a perspective of a person on it ( i work on the Signpost). I thank you for your advise, and I will be doing that (studying) later this evening. I appreciate your critisism on the Supreme court page, the more I get, they better changes I can make. If there any more questions, I will have to get to them later, I am late for a meeting. Thank you, happy Saturday! WikieZach 20:43, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image licensing disputed

[edit]

I have listed Image:Lady justice1.jpg on Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. I looked at the website you named as the source. It's mostly in Turkish, which I can't read, but there was a standard copyright notice on the front page that seemed to encompass the entire site. There was nothing to suggest that the image was released into the public domain, as you claimed. If the image cannot be shown to be public domain (or available under a free license) it will be deleted after 14 days. FreplySpang (talk) 16:37, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An Esperanzial note

[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Signpost series

[edit]

My first thought is that there wouldn't be enough material for a real series. Presumably we'll have a story about the 1,000,000 articles, but that's a one-time event, and an article talking about the future of Wikipedia would be a little more speculative than would normally fit in with our reporting. Ral315 was going to hopefully get an interview with Jimbo, though, and via some of the questions that could be a better setting to cover that angle. --Michael Snow 04:08, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Wikizach, I think that archiving the page is great and we plan on doing it. I reverted back because as Rune.welsh said above we did want to leave everything on the page for a day...I wanted the scores from the first contest left up until the next ones are posted. (Only for the first contest, my thinking is, this project is becoming very popular, and there are going to be user's who are getting nominated, and haven't seen the page yet. I'd like them to be able to see the winner's, and see how it looks when the page is full.) After this next contest, please feel free to make the archive again, along with the second archive if you wish! Esperanza User Page Award

[edit]

Hi Wikizach/Archive 2! You've signed up to be a judge for the Esperanza User Page Award! You'll be assigned three user pages to examine. Pick your favorite one and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

Please see the Scores section on this page for additional information on your job as a judge.

Keep in mind that your scores are a secret! Email KnowledgeOfSelf with your scores and final picks. Please contact him for information on how to email him. As soon as all the scores have been tallied, a winner will be announced! Thanks.

You'll have to choose your favorite amongst the following three user pages:

  2. Wiki alf
  3. SWD316

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Your Question

[edit]

I'm running for Selectman, the highest position in the town of Merrimack, New Hampshire since we run ourselves under an Open Ballot Town Meeting style of government per the New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated. However, if the proposed town charter also passes, the winners of the Selectman's election will instantly become Councilors since the charter proposes a change to a Budgetary Town Council. I'm not sure who i'm running against, but the incumbents whose terms are up will be Carolyn Whitlock and Dick Hinch. Karmafist 03:31, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
