Velammal Engineering College was established in the year 1995-96. It is a self financing non-minority institution, affiliated to Anna University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) also ISO and Accreditation .

Research
Department of Computer Science and Engineering The Department has been in the forefront of establishment of the TIFAC-CORE on pervasive computing technologies at a cost of Rs. 5.14 crores in the college. One Asst. Professor and 2 Lecturers have been deputed from the department to work in the CORE. The department has received a funding grant of Rs. 2.01 Lakhs from Tamil Virtual University for a project titled "Language Localization for Tamil in Mobile Phones". A project titled "Predictive texting in mobile phones" with a funding grant of Rs. 2.15 Lakhs is under consideration in Tamil Virtual University. The Department is in collaboration in the computational studies aspect in a project prepared by Chemistry Department which is under consideration by Indian Council for Medical Research. A staff student team of the Department has won the second prize in the State level Project competition conducted under the auspices of kanithamizh sangam Department of TIFAC-CORE IN PERVASIVE COMPUTING TECHNOLOGIES Velammal Engineering College (VEC) signed an MOU with Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) on September 23, 2005 to create a Centre of Relevance and Excellence (CORE) in Pervasive Computing Technologies. With this, VEC joins an exclusive club of 25 other top institutions who have created COREs in various domains.
