Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over three million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.--SPhilbrickT 01:01, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How to automate filling in info into cite web template?[edit]

Resolved
 –  – ukexpat (talk) 20:41, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that there should be a way for a tool or bot or something to automate the tedious task of filling in the info into the cite web template, when citing a web page. For example on this page, Suite101.com, there are 14 bare links used as cites. I'ld rather not have to go through them one at a time formatting them according to the cite web template, grabbing the info from the webpages cited, and then inserting the info into the appropriate places. Is there a way to automate, or at least semi-automate this process? Thanks, --LK (talk) 06:12, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is a Gadget called RefToolbar — it may or may not be sufficient for your purposes. PleaseStand (talk) 06:33, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I use Cite4wiki, an app for Firefox. You basically go to the webpage, click Cite4wiki, then copy it into the edit window. Is that what you need? {{Sonia|ping|enlist}} 06:37, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I recently stumbled across Citation Wizard, which can create a compete citation based upon a variety of sources. I've only used it for urls and ISBNs. When it finds the ISBN, it is great, but I tried some that it didn't find. I've used it for URLs, but I wouldn't use it blindly. Sometimes it picks up a good title, sometimes, I disagree, and it doesn't fill in the access date. Despite some limitations, it is a real time saver. I'm not familiar with the app Sonia mentioned, and will check it out.--SPhilbrickT 11:49, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks people, that's great. LK (talk) 12:55, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussing a photo[edit]

What is the correct place to discuss a photograph that is on Commons? Lova Falk talk 12:41, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect it depends on what it is that you want to discuss! Why not try asking at Commons:Help desk, mentioning the image in question and what your issue is? BencherliteTalk 12:50, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging[edit]

Can anyone tag a wikiproject or portal tag in the 'jute' article's talk page. And I was thinking to improve it to an A class article, can anyone cooperate with me ?? --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 13:47, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged it with {{WikiProject Textile Arts}} and {{WikiProject Agriculture}}. You may want to ask at those projects for interested editors. Intelligentsium 13:55, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bad Usernames[edit]

Is their a software which helps you pick out rude or offensive usernames?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 16:01, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you're asking about Wikipedia, there is a bot that monitors new usernames as they are created. It is the watcherbot. TNXMan 16:08, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry about looking for inappropriate usernames. Few usernames are serious enough to warrant an immediate block, and the jack-of-all-trades SoxBot -- in the process of replacing HBC NameWatcherBot -- usually takes care of more inappropriate names (although, as you can tell by looking at WP:UAA, even SoxBot's reports are usually declined). Concentrate your efforts on something that always needs more help, such as new page patrolling, cleanup, copyediting, or finding sources for unreferenced articles. Kish Khodro Ltd, Kish Island Iran[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam

The information you mention on Kish Khodro Ltd requires rectification as follows:

The company was formed in 1995 in Kish Island, Iran with Mohamad Saffari Kermani as MD and 51% shareholder, Bank of Indsutry & Mine 40% Kamran Naghdi as Managing Director of BMS Automotives Ltd, 9%.

As purchase of 43,000 M2 of land for the factory in Kish Island Iran is not allowed by foreigers, I invested the 9% in Kish Khodro Ltd, as an Iranian national.

The SULTAN (Called SINAD in Iran, was named after the names of Mr saffari's sons, Sina & Nader) BMS had purchased the Concept from IAD, and developed the vehicle in my factory into a 100% working vehicle. It is the first time in Iranian automotive industry that prior to inauguration of the plant (by then President Rafsanjani), Kish Khodro, had a Homologation and crash test certificate from MIRA/VCA in the UK to export the Sinad to Europe.

Sultan, Sinad was engineered in BMS House, corner of Oxlow Lane and Wantz road, in Dagenham RM10. It is a 1600 cc, 65 bhp, air conditioned, front traction vehicle. I had named it an MTV, for Most Terrain Vehicle.

For the development of the composite, interior and exterior body, we developed the Vacuum Injection Shell Process (VISP). In 1999/2000 BMS Automotives was short listed from between 200 companies selected from around the world for the Innovation & Tachnology competition. We were awarded the Second Position for Innovation and Technology and Runner up for best tooling.

After due deligent tests, on Sinad, we were authorised by Renault to write on our vehicle and advertising Sinad (Sultan) "Powered by RENAULT". I am willing to give further information if required by your honorable readers on <emails removed>

With kind regards

Kamran M Naghdi, Managing Director —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.8.115.67 (talk) 17:29, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sloth (deadly sin) article layout problem[edit]

The printable version of the article on sloth (deadly sin), when I preview it prior to printing, shows text on top of text, obscuring content in the article. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sloth_%28deadly_sin%29&printable=yes The "normal" version of the page does the same thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloth_%28deadly_sin%29 Printing the article reveals the same problem. Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3 Mozilla Firefox 5.0 HP Photosmart C5550 All-in-One.Suska 111 (talk) 19:00, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is it's a local problem as I am unable to replicate. If you are experiencing the problem when viewing the page in your browser your printer is irrelevant. If the problem exists in the printable version also then I believe that discounts a problem with the skin you are using, but you could try with a different skin just in case. Also, can you confirm which browser you are using as what you've claimed cannot be correct - the latest version of Firefox is 3.6 (or 3.7 if you are using the latest alpha, in which case that could very well be the issue). AJCham 19:21, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Works for me, as I cannot replicate the problem. Are you using Firefox 3 (in which you should update), as Firefox 5.0 is not a valid Firefox version? MC10 (TCGBL) 20:25, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am not aware of any printing issues with any version of FireFox. See Help:Printable for information on the Printable version link. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 01:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is Wikipedia, not Facebook. We have no association with Facebook and we're not going to create any pages there. --Mysdaao talk 20:07, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think they're referring to the new Facebook feature that pulls info from Wikipedia to start a community page to which anyone can add. I think the OP is requesting a page for Marmora and Lake, Ontario, from which Facebook can pull info. TNXMan 20:52, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, wow, that's already a bluelink! In which case, OP, you'll need to check with Facebook about their new community pages. TNXMan 20:53, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like this is where Facebook users can create a community page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php --Mysdaao talk 00:16, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki "filtering"???[edit]

Who is responsible here for the content of featured articles??? .... How can NORMAL citizens express their views & opinions, when it is all filtered through single individuals appointed bei "wiki-boards" anyway? (or whom else????)
An explanation would probably fulfill a "question of many" people, I think!!
Thank you "sincerely"!!! --- in advance!—Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.100.167.152 (talk) 23:15, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit! Try it! If you want to discuss and article, rather than edit it, you will find a talk page behind each article. Use the tabs above the article name. A very small percentage of articles, such as today's featured article on Michael Jackson are protected. You should still be able to contribute to the talk page and express an opinion. You may even persuade an administrator to change the article. Yaris678 (talk) 23:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To see who contributes to any article, featured or otherwise, click on the "edit history" tab. As regards editors' views and opinions, these are not appropriate in Wikipedia content: see WP:NPOV. It's true that featured articles are probably more closely watched than non-featured articles, because of the effort and work that has gone into getting them to featured quality. Nobody owns them, but plenty of people will have them on their watchlist and will monitor and examine any changes. If you're referring to Death of Ian Tomlinson, you may have run into problems by using the "undo" feature without any explanation as to why you were using it. Undo tends to be used for obviously unconstructive edits, such as incontrovertible vandalism. Where you're disputing an edit by an established user, it's more helpful to take the discussion to the article's talk page and try to reach consensus on the best wording. Karenjc 23:46, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
@ Karenjc

Ok, let me rephrase my question: Who decides which articles become "featured articles" here @ wiki? It is to my concern, and for the sake of our children, that the biggest number (approx. 200 to 300) of "featured articles" on the list ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_articles") ARE ABOUT WARFARE!! My next question would be, "why is the world being so exploited through wikipedia?" of all places & websites... Aren't we getting enough of that from our (m)ass-media & news-agencies nowadays? Even our innocent children turn to wikipedia on a daily basis to learn about this beautiful world in which we live. Must we (all) be so influenced in such a manner of destructiveness & brutality? I would think not.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.100.167.152 (talk) 07:11, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Articles can be nominated for featured status at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. Whether they meet the quality standards is discussed there by anyone who wants to discuss it. If there is consensus (as judged by the FA director Raul654) the article is promoted to featured status. Prodego talk 07:18, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A question like this has been asked before, about why video games and astronomical objects always get to become FAs. Simple: Because people who are also interested in those areas are interested in Wikipedia. Kayau Voting IS evil 07:20, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OP, I'm not sure that you've understood the significance of FA status, which is simply one level in a series of gradings that assess articles for their quality: gradings bear no relation to the subject-matter of the article, but judge how well and comprehensively that subject-matter has been dealt with. Any article can achieve FA status, if it is nominated as described above and deemed to satisfy the (clearly defined and rigorous) quality criteria. The ultimate aim is for all articles to be of featured status; however, since Wikipedia is built collaboratively by volunteers, it is reliant on people being interested enough in a subject to help build an excellent article on it. As Kayau quite rightly points out, many of Wikipedia's most prolific article-builders are here because they are interested in, and comfortable with, science and technology, which is why that sort of article often attracts enthusiastic and knowledgeable editors. By bringing up the "won't somebody please think of the children" argument, were you suggesting that the quality assessment of articles should take into account the subject-matter, and we should be using the assessment process to promote subjects that are uncontroversial or "nice"? The trouble is that that goes absolutely against the fundamental purpose of Wikipedia, which is to build a high-quality, freely available encyclopaedia. Encyclopaedias are repositories of accurate facts about the world as it is, nothing more. This is why Wikipedia is not censored and one of our fundamental requirements is a neutral point of view. If children are accessing FAs on Wikipedia, they will at least be getting neutral, factual, detailed, verifiably accurate information on a subject that is notable enough for an encyclopaedia. Considering the amount of misinformation and sheer rubbish they can find out there at the click of a mouse these days, I would suggest FAs are not unduly harmful in comparison, whatever their subject matter.
