[edit]reference list column
[edit]I added a {{dead link}} tag to one of the references at Chetniks. When I did this, the reference I tagged gets split in a rather ugly way between the two columns. The date for reference 64 (Holocaust photo) has the year and the dead link tag in the second column. Is there a way to keep the entire reference in the first column and have the second column start with reference 65? RudolfRed (talk) 02:38, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- No. See Template:Reflist#Columns: widows and orphans. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:47, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Two questions: Watchlisting sections and (separately) random pages
[edit]Two questions, forgive me if they have been answered before:
- I know I can watchlist a page, but can I watchlist a certain section of a page? Say a section I am interested in AN/I or BLPN?
- My browser is currently configured to bring up a random WP article upon launch, but is there a URL I can insert as my homepage that will, not only bring up a random article, but also random talk/user/noticeboard/etc. pages? Thanks in advance. Quinn ✹SUNSHINE 04:18, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- In regards to you first question, only if the page structure uses transcluded subpages for each section. You can watchlist the subpages such as at WP:AFD. There is no way to do it on most pages that are not structured that way, such as the example pages you mentioned. I'm not aware of an scripts that would do it either. Dunno about your second question. Monty845 04:34, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- There are URLs that will bring up a random talk page, but it is a seperate function from finding a random article, I don't think you can have one page that returns either a random article or a random talk page. See WP:RAN for the links that bring up the different types of random pages. RudolfRed (talk) 04:48, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
asking for deletion of personal information
[edit]I found someone providing his email address on a talk page; AFAIR this counts as personal information that should be removed. Whom do I contact about this? Nczempin (talk) 10:00, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Go to Wikipedia:Requests for oversight and send an email as described there. Someone should respond very quickly. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:38, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Nczempin (talk) 14:46, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Unless the editor in question is a minor, they are generally free to put whatever personal information they want on Wikipedia (Name, email, general location, workplace, etc). Oversight is generally for when somebody puts personal information about somebody else, not information which has been volunteered, oversight are unlikely to agree to such a request--Jac16888 Talk 14:52, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Question
[edit]hello,
how do I change the destination when I click on the edit section on the right? For example, if I want to edit "GA reviews" on my page then I want instead edit the subpage. Regards.--GoPTCN 12:47, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, I didn't recognise you from your new signature! Try removing the line
==GA reviews==
from your user page and add it at the top of the subpage instead. See Help:Section#Editing sections of included templates. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:29, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Notable alumni
[edit]In some Indian school college related articles we face regular problems that people include non-notable, unsourced entries. I have to fight regularly to clean up "notable people" lists. I requested an RFC here: Talk:Ballygunge_Government_High_School#Notable_alumni_section.21. But, I am interested to use this RFC for all similar disputes (that means in many articles). Can you suggest me how shall I use it? Shall I move a copy of it to somewhere else (eg. talk/RFC)? In addition can you add your opinion in talk please? --Tito Dutta ✉ 13:21, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Start the RFC at talk page of the Indian Education Project. That should be the appropriate central location. Lynch7 14:13, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Does anyone reply there? --Tito Dutta ✉ 15:51, 24 June 2012 (UTC)- I'd certainly expect more people to turn up there than the talk page of a Ballygunge School article. You can also notify WT:IN. Lynch7 15:57, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Why bother with an RFC? Just remove anybody who doesn't have an article or a reference (i.e. no evidence of notability), I come across "notable alumni/local personalities/blokes who live there lists all the time and always cut them down to size, as should anybody who knows how Wikipedia works--Jac16888 Talk 16:01, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Very fast! Used strikethrough in last reply. Yes, I had posted there before replying here! I have to debate/fight regularly for notable alumni/citizens/members section. --Tito Dutta ✉ 16:09, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- I'd certainly expect more people to turn up there than the talk page of a Ballygunge School article. You can also notify WT:IN. Lynch7 15:57, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Need help to modify Infobox template
[edit]Hello, I'm looking to modify Template:Infobox diplomatic mission to make some important changes. I'd be glad if someone told me how to do it or would be better if someone did it for me ;) . The changes I'm looking for are:
- Bolding of the labels - currently its not in bold, and it looks quite awkward.
- Option to choose between the label "Ambassador" and "Consul General" - Consulates General do not have Ambassadors, so this change would be appropriate.
Thanks. Lynch7 14:27, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Done -- John of Reading (talk) 15:41, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
M. f. M. n.
[edit]What does M. f. M. n. stand for in Roman names? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.130.72.131 (talk) 14:59, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Where you found them? It could mean anything. Are MF and MN helpful?--GoPTCN 15:11, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- See, for instance, Gaius Atilius Regulus Serranus, GOP. The abbreviations are explained here—"M. f. M. n." stands for "Marci filius Marci nepos" (son of Marcus, grandson of Marcus). Deor (talk) 15:27, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Adding studio musicians to album liner notes
[edit]What is the suggested format for adding backing/studio musicians to the notes of record albums? I don't see an appropriate field in the Wikipedia Cite album-notes template. I am about to embark on a rather large project of adding this information from the albums in my collection. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.19.118.104 (talk) 15:29, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Help into archiving
[edit]Could anybody please help me for the matter below?
On my talkpage, you could see archive infobox on the right hand side.In it, the first archive's name is not properly written.I want to change it to '1'.Max Viwe | Viwe The Max 16:58, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- I requested to change s/1 to 1.Not to start my next archive from 1.Max Viwe | Viwe The Max 18:53, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm terrible at archiving. I was trying to rename the first version, but I messed up. Electriccatfish2 (talk) 19:03, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- I have moved User talk:Maxviwe/Archives/ 1 to User talk:Maxviwe/Archive 1. I think that should fix it; the bot should fix up the display on your user talk page when it next runs. If the page still looks wrong in 24 hours, leave a message on my talk page and I'll have another look. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:40, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- (More, after the bot run) We're almost there. Cluebot has got confused by the leftover redirect page User talk:Maxviwe/Archives/ 1. I suggest you tag the redirect with {{db-user}}. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:07, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Wiki page background color
[edit]I was trying to highlight something on wiki and probably pressed some button by accident. Now the background page of wiki turned blue (instead of white). What should I do to change it back? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.235.252.157 (talk) 19:27, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- There is a bug in the latest version of Google Chrome that shows a blue background if the browser zoom level is set below 100%. Reset the zoom to 100% with Ctrl+0 or adjust it with Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:31, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- That bug is actually fixed in the latest version of Google Chrome. If your browser is Google Chrome then try to update. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:08, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Copyright status of side box art photo?
[edit]Hi there, I have a question about a legal "grey area" if you will with regards to image licensing. I want to take a photograph of the games in the Final Fantasy series because I have quite a few of them and I think it would be cool to see all the box shots on the Final Fantasy article. Keep in mind the photo would be for aesthetic / additional information purposes and would not be essential to the page. So the photo would have to be free use GFDL/CC/PD. Anyways, I'm wondering if a photo of the sides of the games would qualify as free use or if the side labels are considered copyrighted? They are all simple graphics - just the name of the game in a relatively standard font, plus some coloring effects. Perhaps the most intricate design is for X-2, which has a pink gradient on the side but no actual artwork.
My intuition is that these will be fine and licensing won't be a problem. Ultimately I could recreate these side labels in Illustrator using simply text effects (although taking a photo would be several dozen times faster). Any thoughts on this? CaseyPenk (talk) 21:25, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

- Hi there. It looks like the text you want to include is from a copyrighted source. Text submitted to Wikipedia must be available under a free license, and the contents must be notable. If you can find this information from a reliable source, feel free to ask your question again with new text that is written by yourself (and is not from an outside source). Also, generally people do not write biographies about themselves because there could emerge a conflict of interest there. CaseyPenk (talk) 21:32, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that that material is not acceptable for Wikipedia for several separate reasons.
- First, as CaseyPenk points out, it is copyright. If you hold the copyright, then you may choose to release it under a licence acceptable to Wikipedia (which allows copying for any purpose), but you would need to do so explicitly as explained in WP:Donating copyright materials.
- But even if you were to license it, the text would be unacceptable because it is not neutral in tone, but reads like an advertisement.
- Thirdly, it contains no references to independent reliable sources; and without them it does not establish that the subject is notable by Wikipedia's criteria
- Finally, as CaseyPenk notes, autobiography is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia.
- Your best course is to find the independent reliable sources that have discussed you, and post a request at WP:Requested articles with these references. --ColinFine (talk) 21:13, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
