adding inter-language images in infobox
[edit]Is there a way to link to an image hosted on another language's wiki in the infobox, or must a local copy be created manually? I feel like I've seen this before, but can't work out the syntax. The relevant article is here and the potential image here. U003F? 08:27, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- You can't use an image from another language's Wikipedia. If it's not a free image hosted on Wikimedia Commons, it would need to be hosted here on enwiki if it meets the fair use criteria here, which may be different from the faire use criteria on another language's Wikipedia. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:30, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks David. Are there any tools available for moving images across (and updating criteria as necessary), or must it be done manually? U003F? 11:27, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @U003F: From a copyright perspective, you cannot copy the other Wiki's image at all, as that is not fair use of the other Wikipedia. You can instead upload the image from the source the other Wiki used, treating it completely separately from the other Wiki and applying all of the fair use rules of the English Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 16:54, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Socialays (application) Wikipedia Page
[edit]Hello everyone!
I created Socialays (application)'s Wikipedia page and it got immediately deleted due to the COI. Then, I add ''paid'' disclosure to the top of the page (as your guide mentions) but your editor @Athaenara -who's also deleted my page- still does not reply to my messages and doesn't cancel the page deletion after my disclosure.
Please help me on this process, I've been trying to publish this page since September and your editor's behavior was so rude... You can check his/her/their replies on Socialays (application) talk page. Nadia.gomez1 (talk) 10:31, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
courtesy link: Draft:Socialays
- Nadia.gomez1 The user responded to you on your user talk page, asking you to read their initial post and the linked pages therein more carefully, for information on how to proceed. 331dot (talk) 10:40, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- You need to place the connected contributor tag on the draft talk page, not the draft itself. 331dot (talk) 10:41, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- I've added the submission information to allow you to submit the draft for an independent review. Note that it's not likely to be accepted as it is now, as it does nothing other than tell of the topic's existence, and is sourced only to the website of the app. A Wikipedia article must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage choose on their own to say about the topic(not press releases, interviews, announcements). 331dot (talk) 10:42, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Nadia.gomez1: - Athaenara can't reply to you or do anything about the deleted page as they have been blocked because of an unrelated matter, but there is useful advice from 331dot below. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:06, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Warning you about our stringent rules on conflict of interest and undisclosed paid editing is not rude, any more than a cop giving you a warning for driving over the speed limit is rude. Bluntly, so far you have shown little evidence that you understand our rules and are willing to abide by them. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:33, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Mention of obvious statements
[edit]Hello I'd like to know for eg, here's this [1] google books about an author which mentions, "He is a popular panelist", Can I copy down the word "popular" too as well if written down in an article? Like me writing down, Sam Singh is a popular panelist based on that given reference or should be not be added? ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 11:52, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Rejoy2003, you should not use that text from Google books as a source as it is a blurb, a piece of promotional text possibly written by Savio Rodrigues himself and not an independent or reliable source. There is more general advice on using statements of opinion at WP:ATTRIBUTEPOV. TSventon (talk) 12:24, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Wikidata in wrong place for 2 articles
[edit]I'm looking for someone who has permission to edit semi-protected page on Wikidata. There are 2 articles in foreign languages that are in wrong place. Both Hungarian and New-Norwegian article pages need to be removed from here Q3824358 and they need to be re-added here Q115244455. I can't do it myself, since I don't have permission to edit semi-protected pages. --Pek (talk) 14:07, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not convinced that that is the appropriate division, Pek. d:Q3824358 is glossed "Intracellular atomic structure", but most or all of the articles connected to it, other than the two you mention, are just the adjective "Intracellular" (the en link isn't even ito an article, but to an entry in a glossary). The only language that is connected to both is English, and as I say, one of the English links is only that glossary entry. I rather suspect that the two Wikidata items should be merged, but you should discuss it at d:WD:CHAT before taking any action. ColinFine (talk) 15:19, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Searching for mismatched ref start and end tags
[edit]As far as I can tell in the search box, for what is actually displayed, most non-alphanumeric characters are treated as spaces. Is there any way to search for mismatched ref tags? A mismatched end tag would display, but I can't figure out how to look for the entire string </ref> that is displaying.Naraht (talk) 15:54, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Naraht: I'd be surprised if the standard search box can do this. However, "Reference tags without correct match" is error 94 on Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia/List of errors, and that links through to this bot-generated list which will keep you going for some time. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:19, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Hacked and banned
[edit]I am only (Redacted), and my wikipedia account has been hacked. It says I edited a bunch of illegal things but i didn't and now im banned for 31 hours. The hacker is doing that now i need help please get back to me ASAP. 207.195.80.143 (talk) 17:10, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Your IP address has been used to vandalize Wikipedia. IP addresses can be shared by multiple people. If you register a Wikipedia account, you should not have this problem. If you already have an account, what is its name? Cullen328 (talk) 17:20, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- As Cullen says above, you are not the only one with access to your IP address, and likely were dynamically assigned it after someone else. This isn't a hacker getting access to your computer; this is standard and innocuous IP allocation. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 20:50, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Language - same page in different languages - only English version has changed
[edit]I have edited an English wikipedia page but note that the Afrikaans version of the same page has not changed (it still reflects the English page prior to the edits). How can one update the Afrikaans page so that it picks up the edits from the English page? the relevant pages are as follows: English version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondelswarts_Rebellion Afrikaans version: https://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondelswart-opstand many thanks. Daclarobena (talk) 17:49, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Daclarobena: The Afrikaans Wikipedia, and all Wikipedias in general, are not automatically updated to match the English Wikipedia. You should edit the article on the Afrikaans Wikipedia to reflect your change on enwiki. – dudhhr talk contribs (he/they) 17:50, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Downloading wikipedia
[edit]What is the procedure to download Wikipedia onto a laptop computer S-sports-sport (talk) 17:57, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @S-sports-sport: Are you asking about the app (which to my knowledge is mobile-only), and not a datadump of Wikipedia, which goes into gigabytes? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:24, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @S-sports-sport Full details at WP:DUMP: but not for the faint-hearted! Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:30, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @S-sports-sport: Wikipedia is really big: Wikipedia:Size of Wikipedia. You probably do not want to download it, but it is possible. Because it it edited continuously, it will rapidly become out of date. -Arch dude (talk) 20:08, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Depends on what you mean by "really big". The linked article puts the size at about 22 Gb currently (without associated media). This blog, which seems reliable says that's about the same as an hour of a 4K movie, or 15 hours at standard "Full HD". Many modern laptops have 1 Tb hard drives so the real issue is the speed of your internet connection. Mike Turnbull (talk) 22:44, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
Since June 2022 re Visa policy of Russia
[edit]I manually fixed about 10% of the Bare URLs in Visa policy of Russia and decided that it might be worth trying the three tools that, on the surface, appear to be 'merely' 3 (possibly forked) generations of the same tool. I also noted that a WikiNote said that, after an article is BAREtagged it should be fixed somehow (person?bot). June 2022 is at least 4 month ago. Although I could periodically work on it, I'm asking for help here to find out if just clicking was all I had/have to do, and if so, where. (yes I know that I'd have to review the changes and perhaps even roll it all back) Nuts240 (talk) 18:19, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Nuts240 On the desktop version of Wikipedia, the citation bot which can fix (some) bare URL is invoked from the menu on the left of the article, namely Tools / Expand citations. If you look at the edit history of the article, you'll see that this was last invoked on 21 August. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:28, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- I'm a bit puzzled by what happened when I tried it. It first showed going to *https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:OAuth/authorize&oauth_token=b764ea5d16e123b70e45442d8484bcd3&oauth_consumer_key=ea31bc18a6b8133fc0f29cf175d13a3a and then went presented:
- In order to complete your request, Citation Bot needs permission to perform the following actions on your behalf on all projects of this site:
- Interact with pages
- Edit existing pages
- ALL PROJECTS OF THIS SITE? sounds a bit quite wide-ranged. Rather than cause damage, I'd rather 'err' on the precautious side, so I'm leave the ALLOW/cancel screen visible, and awaiting someone at this desk saying it's OK to click ALLOW. Nuts240 (talk) 23:02, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Nuts240 It is OK to click "allow". It is still your responsibility to check the edit, as you are already aware. The point is that this particular bot commits its edit without user intervention once you have invoked it: there is no way to "Preview" what it plans to do and your User Name will be included in its edit summary. Whois down?
[edit]I figured I'd ask this here because this isn't as urgent of an issue in that it requires WP:VPT, but is Whois down right now for anyone else? I just tried using it on an IP and got an error 500/Internal server error. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:09, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

locating a draft
[edit]Hello, I created a draft and save it but I am not able to locate it to make adjustments. Please help, thank you! Mamazeke (talk) 20:37, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Mamazeke: Hello Mamazeke! It appears your draft (Draft:Chi Modu) was deleted by Diannaa per G6 of the speedy deletion criteria because it was copied from the deleted articled Chi Modu, which I find as a rather strange reason for deletion so hopefully they can explain further. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:44, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Apparently the article was originally created by a member of this sockfarm/UPE ring. @Mamazeke, where did you get the text that you used to create the draft? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:51, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Diannaa,
- I am Chi Modu's widow. He is deceased and I need to get this page/article back online. There are several major project I am working on and I was asked about his Wikipage. He hired someone on Upwork in 2020 to get his Wiki page/article on Wikipedia. Which he apparently did but it was removed soon after. He attempted to obtain information from the person who he worked with/paid but this person was not helpful nor did he appear to be able to explain how to get it back online. Are you able to let me know why the original article was removed? I of course have the original article that was uploaded/created. I was attempting to get it back online, and I don't understand why if it was removed that you can see that it's or I added it as a copy. 2603:301B:1704:4700:455B:380F:A37C:E993 (talk) 21:06, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- IP editor/Mamazeke (please remember to sign in to your account), the article was removed because its author violated many of Wikipedia's rules. If you wish to write an article on this subject, it would be best to start over from scratch. See Help:Your first article for instructions on how to get started. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:10, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- It was deleted because it was created by a blocked user using a sockpuppet account. This is clearly marked at Chi Modu. In general, paying for a Wikipedia article is not wise, as we do not generally accept paid editors (at best, we tolerate it, and even then they must disclose the details of their employment) and most such editors are some combination of completely ignorant of Wikipedia policy, looking to rip clients off, or banned. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 21:13, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- (ec) We can't copy from deleted articles because the attribution chain is broken. Also, the article was deleted as "G5: Created by a banned or blocked user (Ross kramerov) in violation of ban or block". The user (Ross kramerov) was blocked as likely being a member of a paid editing farm. — Diannaa (talk) 20:52, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't know that was a thing since WP:REFUND exists and I think I"ve also heard some admins are willing to give you a copy of a deleted page. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:58, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- I personally would not give anybody a copy of a deleted page that had been created via undisclosed paid editing; undisclosed paid editing is a violation of our terms of service. — Diannaa (talk) 21:09, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Diannaa,
- It is an article he asked a writer to complete then paid the person on Upwork to get on Wikipedia. So I am not sure that you complete understand, the copy belonged to Chi Modu therefore as his Widow it belongs to me! 2603:301B:1704:4700:455B:380F:A37C:E993 (talk) 21:12, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

- G5 deletions only apply if the only substantial edits to the draft were by blocked/banned users. If someone else made a major edit to the page G5 would have been inapplicable. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 21:20, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
