[edit]Block log filters
[edit]Hi. When attempting to view a recent block log, I can only see filters for the block type (unblock / modify / block etc) and tag. There are options to filter on specific performers and targets, but can't see a way to filter on the *type* of target (i.e. anon vs account).
e.g. if I visit a url such as: [1] there are dozens of entries for ST47ProxyBot (talk · contribs) blocking various proxies which I have to filter through to get a list of accounts being blocked. Are there query parameters to achieve this?
Thanks - 220.146.93.159 (talk) 01:52, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- You could try Special:BlockList. Remsense诉 01:57, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Catholic Encyclopedia

. The template is supposed to include one of two parameters. If neither is included, the teamplate adds the article to a hidden category, Category:Articles incorporating text from the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia with no article parameter. There are currently about 330 articles in the category, probably mostly from the olden times before the parameters became mandatory. If you would like to help, please go fix a few of these. -Arch dude (talk) 05:20, 23 February 2024 (UTC)- Thanks Nirva20 (talk) 05:21, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

- [[User:Arch dude|@Arch dude]] et alia -- the problem is that even with the correct template, the problem is that the Catholic Encyclopedia is essentially defunct online and has been subsumed into the New Advent website. Maybe a new template should be created. Nirva20 (talk) 23:37, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Uploading pictures into a Wikipedia article
[edit]Hello.
I am trying to upload a couple of pictures into a Wikipedia article, but it tells me that I do not have the authority to upload them. Please advise.
Thank you.
Joozoon Joozoon (talk) 05:47, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Joozoon: Hi there! What were the exact steps you followed, and what was the exact error message you received? Were you trying to upload pictures you took with your own camera, or pictures you found on the Internet? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 06:34, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Joozoon: It appears that you are not autoconfirmed, and you cannot upload images until you are.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:43, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Joozoon If you took the images yourself, you may upload them to Commons. https://commons.wikimedia.org/ Otherwise, you may go to Files for Upload to work with other editors on uploading them. 331dot (talk) 10:18, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
My article was unfairly deleted
[edit]Hi, my article was deleted even though all material falls within the public domain and doesn't infringe on any copyright.
What can I do to restore it? CraigVHenry (talk) 08:48, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, CraigVHenry. Perhaps Liz can explain the copyright issue. However, the deleted content bears no resemblance to an actual encyclopedia article. Cullen328 (talk) 09:29, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Firstly, I've been a donor to Wikipedia for some years by reason of the platforms decentralized dedication to truth. Then, in the topic of the article, the only way to expound is to quote legitimate content. Many articles and content on the platform excerpt direct quotes for similar reasons as burden of proof. Then, making use of content that's been in the public domain for millenia for reasons of fair use is certainly not a problem. Please reinstate the article. CraigVHenry (talk) 10:24, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- As an editor, I thank you for donating- but donations are handled by the Foundation, we editors have nothing to do with the process and don't see the money. Wikipedia is not about truth- see WP:TRUTH- which isn't to say we don't want to accurately summarize sources, but truth is in the eye of the beholder. 331dot (talk) 10:29, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

- @CraigVHenry: There's an explanation on your talk page, in particular: the page appeared to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appeared to be a direct copy from https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/shepherd-lightfoot.html. Bazza (talk) 09:45, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- The manuscripts excepted in the writing are in the public domain. They are thousands of years old and have been so since antiquity. The website mentioned is nothing more than a library project for the public to find some of the thousands of manuscripts. I simply quote fair use of topically paragraphs across the spectrum from many manuscripts. Many thanks. CraigVHenry (talk) 10:11, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- That website states "Early Christian Writings is copyright © 2001-2024 Peter Kirby". 331dot (talk) 10:15, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- The website may be copyrighted i.e. the name of the website, but the manuscripts have been in the public domain for thousands of years. Nobody has rights over for example a pre-flood manuscript written over five thousand years ago addressed to the world. CraigVHenry (talk) 10:28, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Then you might want to tell Peter Kirby that- but Wikipedia is not a place to host primary source material like religious texts. 331dot (talk) 10:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- The original texts undoubtedly are in the public domain, but you are not quoting original texts. You are quoting translations which are copyright by the translator. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:49, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, but if the translator is this J. B. Lightfoot (1828-1889) we're good to go, I think. No opinion on how the text was used in the article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:30, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Request regarding publishing a page
[edit]Hi! I am trying to publish a page for "OSRC Network" on Wikipedia, but it is being deleted by the admin. The page has informational content. Can you please let me know how to resolve this issue? Do I need to pay for it?
I'd be very thank full to you for the response! Alammusa (talk) 13:05, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Alammusa, simply having informational content is not enough to justify a page's existence. Do not pay anyone any money (please see WP:SCAM).. I recommend carefully reading Help:Your first article. 57.140.16.1 (talk) 14:25, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Edit warring
[edit]A Edit warring happened in an article called New Taiwan Dollar. What should I do? Mamiamauwy (talk) 13:08, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- I see an edit war between Mamiamauwy and LHD. You are both in danger of being blocked for edit warring. Instead, you should both discuss the issue on the article's talk page. Maproom (talk) 13:42, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- A user called LHD once got attention for war editing in 2023. But I've been doing the same thing since then and I don't know if it's really possible to discuss it. Mamiamauwy (talk) 13:59, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Fixing dead links
[edit]I'm currently working on fixing dead links from Category:Articles with dead external links. However, this category also includes permanent dead links as well as normal dead links. Does anyone know if there is a category that only has articles that have dead links and no permanent dead links? Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:15, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Cocobb8 I don't think that this is will be a separate category but you should be able to use PetScan to find those in "dead links" which are not in "permanent dead links". See documentation at meta. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:30, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Cocobb8 I wouldn't really even make a distinction if you're trying to recover a dead link. It's not that unusual to find a "permanent dead link" that can actually be recovered. Even if you're only checking the Wayback archive, it can simply be the case that there are some "blue" Wayback links which are useless (e.g. they show a page saying that the requested page doesn't exist) as well as actually working blue links. Also, there is the possibility of finding additional archive versions using wildcards to ignore differences in the archived url, so these are differences in the display options (i.e. at the end of the url string). I don't know the exacts rule" for doing this, usually I will truncate it at some punctuation mark (e.g. a hyphen or other special character), add an asterisk, then, assuming this was an acceptable position for the wildcard (and it doesn't seem to be consistent about what's an acceptable position), it will give you up to 10,000 matching urls (but to be able to see all the possible matches, you'll want to put the asterisk in a position so that you get under 10,0000 hits). You can enter a string in the box above the hitlist in order to limit the display to those that match some string in the urls. Yes, this is extra effort but it works with enough frequency to make it worthwhile.
- To be clear, I am unaware of specific documentation for this, it's generally only going to be useful if there were originally multiple urls for the same content (these seem to be mostly newspaper citations, but it's worth the effort because, so far as I am aware, there's no bot that does this). Hit me back if you have questions. Fabrickator (talk) 15:59, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Here's an example url that this actually works for: "https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/grimsby-win-stuns-anfield-630897.html"
- If you do the whole url, you'll get no matches. If you replace the "win-stuns-anfield-630897.html" with "*", you'll get appropriate hits with working wayback copies. Fabrickator (talk) 16:26, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Fabrickator@Michael D. Turnbull Thanks to you both that helps a lot! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 16:07, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Red links
[edit]Is there a page for all the red-links? I'm intending to see if I could try to make articles for some of them. Ominateu (talk) 16:27, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Special:WantedPages, or probably more usefully Wikipedia:Most-wanted articles * Pppery * it has begun... 17:07, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- I can't recall the precise details, but at times in the past, when a copyright or plagiarism violation was found and that violation was treated as "circumstantial evidence" to implicate hundreds of articles, those which didn't get "rescued" got deleted within a week or so. At the moment, I can't recall the specific details, but the evidence was so weak against these articles, I would think the effort would be better spent on re-creating these articles. (Maybe someone else can recognize this scenario and fill in the details.) Fabrickator (talk) 17:32, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
Lack of Matthew Henson in some areas he should be
[edit]I would like to point out the lack of Matthew Henson in 20th century explorers and fellows of the explorer club as he is a historical black explorer. Lilsnake07 (talk) 18:20, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- WP:SOFIXIT? I'm not sure how/why this is a matter for the Help desk; perhaps you can elaborate? DonIago (talk) 18:36, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia can be kind of opaque, and experienced WP editors may not realize just how opaque it is. Anyway, if your favorite "article" is not shown as being in an appropriate category, the category needs to be added to the bottom of the article, e.g. add "Category:Fellows of the Explorers Club" (inside of double-square brackets) to the article in question (usually at the bottom). If there is a hierarchy of categories involved (i.e. one category contains other categories), then add the article to the relevant lowest-level category. (I've never done anything at all with categories, so it's proper to say that I'm just guessing.) Fabrickator (talk) 01:07, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi! How do I get around "false positives"?
[edit]I am relatively new to editing on wikipedia. I have been trying to update a music artist's page and am experiencing "false positive" flags. How do I get around this so that the page can continue to be edited/updated? Many thanks in advance! EnterTheChat (talk) 19:12, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @EnterTheChat: I see you posted on Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports, and you can see the responses you received at the Old revision of Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports. What is the exact information you are adding to Bayli (singer)? Are you also adding citations? GoingBatty (talk) 19:25, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @EnterTheChat: Your post at Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports indicates you were "update artist's discography box, added a touring section, added artist tiktok to the external links section". Can you try doing these things in separate edits, and see which (if any) actually still trigger the filter? GoingBatty (talk) 19:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @GoingBatty, thank you so much for responding! Luckily, I have the code saved. I'll try the updates separately and see what triggers that alert or if all of them do
