Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference[edit]

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on[edit]

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Draft constitution update Waiting for signing. Marshelec advised that he has been drafting some position descriptions and other standard operating instructions for use by committee members and will share draft when more progress has been made, will be provided to committee for approval. Decisions will be required on platforms used (such as document storage, email) so that history is preserved and continuity maintained as people in the roles change.
Wiki-Con Weekends in 2022 and Events
  • WikiCon Wellington No update. Likely to be be online, details of dates and format to be provided when decisions are made.
  • International Women's Day Edit-a-thon Ambrosia10 at the Wellington Meetup proposed an editathon on the weekend of 5–6 March. Group agreed that the focus will be on content creation and that it will be an all weekend event with zoom running the entire time and people coming and going as required with formal catch up times designated for twice a day - morning and afternoon. One of the days may be a Meetup day but this can be a take over event instead. Pakoire will provide the zoom account, Ambrosia10 will start to work on content creation documentation. Noted at the meeting that it was amazing to have so much pre-work done (such as images, stories, individual information) and that it makes the session go much smoother.
  • Creative New Zealand Wikipedian in Residence Pacifika Project Edit-a-thons at Te Papa Einebillion has been approached about supporting this by the Head of Public Programmes at Te Papa. After conversations with Pakoire it's clear that this has been raised due to the conversations Pakoire has been having with Rachel Yates at Te Papa. Einebillion will follow up with Rachel Yates, Pakoire will add Einebillion and Ambrosia10 to the meetings to support the project. Other members of the meetup also expressed an interest in contributing.
  • #1Lib1Ref campaign Australia Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand are working on the One Lib One Ref campaign in May–June. (see this document Ambrosia10 is starting planning for this with Caddie in Australia. The proposal is for zoom meetings who want to learn to add references or liaise about setting up an event for the middle of the year. The schedule is given here: 1Lib1Ref 2022. Resource highlight: Recent book is available on Wikisource https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikipedia_and_Academic_Libraries:_A_Global_Project - chapter 17 has a explanation on using Cite.
  • National Digital Forum is due to occur in February 2022. Ambrosia10 has received funding to attend and link up with representatives of the attending institutions and organisations to encourage them to get involved with Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikisource etc..
  • Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?
Group felt that Conservation Week in September is a good date to work towards, possibly holding an Edit-a-thon at a wildlife reserve on the West Coast and aiming to improve articles on wildlife reserves across New Zealand by updating and adding images.
  • Grants available for activities which contribute to Wikimedia movement strategy initiatives. Information here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:MSIG/About
  • Developing a training course for University students and lecturers. Any further update on this? No update.

Barrytown Blitz
The Barrytown Blitz was held yesterday online. An article on Barrytown Flats was created and considerable improvements made to the Westland petrel, with a view to developing it to Good Article status. There's a list of work still to be completed, including photos to be taken, editing required, etc. There will be a follow-up event.
Further topics could include: Punakaiki and the Paparoa National Park, maybe as part of themed events.
Anything to update / discuss?
Discussed the idea of having themed events and then focusing on improving and adding articles related to that. For example, national parks, conservation, marine reserves, wetlands, Conservation week - meetup in person, building a new visitor centre in Punakaiki.

3. Wiki News – add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • Oronsay: attended yesterday's Barrytown Blitz. Busy writing women's bios - 29 in January!; linking new articles to Wikidata; helping MargaretRDonald with Australian Faunal Directory work; rating new articles.
  • MargaretRDonald: Oronsay, Toby, and MargaretRDonald working on the Australian Faunal Directory - tiny forna (microscopic) which are really badly done in Wikidata. Often very hard to get IDs, GBIF often differs, authors often differ (unique = not unique). Larger part of the 40,000 items are missing. Actions to help: find images, particularly useful; mix and match; Taxon box: use encouraged. Would be great Wikis Love Earth project - 170,000 entries, 130,000 are now up - remaining 40,000. Links: Mix and match for Australian Faunal Directory and WikiData Free Image Search Tool
  • Beeswaxcandle: Wikisource of course! Grove Music Dictionary - 100 pages in the last month; Wikisourcering and being a bureaucrat. Monthly challenge went really well - try to get a reasonable number of pages proofread or validated, 700 biographies of women, Economy of machinery.
  • Marshelec: Attended Barrytown Blitz - improvements to the Western petrel, other bird articles - fluttering shearwaters (translocation endeavours). Developing skills using Inkscape - example on Coal power in Turkey (health effects of coal-fired power stations in Turkey 2019). Planning to write a quite a bit Colin Mcscally (?) (a DOC person). Writing an article on Red Rocks in Wellington coast. Has also been working on the Ashburton article - has got to a really good state.
  • Gertrude206: Adding photos to commons on the Tongariro power scheme. All in preparation for improving the article on the scheme.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

6. Tools demonstrated

Future tutorials/demonstrations attendees would like:

  • Pattypan: now that it has been updated and is working again (for adding bulk images to Commons).
  • Using Cite
  • Table creation
  • Diagramming using Inkscape: export to SVG and upload to Commons
  • Maps: how to create map areas for Wikipedia articles

7. Further discussion

Outcomes[edit]

  • Add anything you worked on or learned during the meetup.

Next meeting and Meetup timetables[edit]

  • Meeting of 6 March 2022 will be taken over by the International Women's Day Edit-a-thon weekend
  • 3 April 2022, same time, same place
