Agenda and Notes from Meeting[edit]

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)[edit]

We enthusiastically welcome any new attendees or wiki-curious people to the meeting. If you are thinking of coming and want to meet one on one for a coffee before the meeting please feel free contact Dianne at admin@wikimedia.nz. She will arrange a friendly wiki person to meet up with you.

  • As agreed at previous meeting - a 15 min discussion on how to improve this section and group strategy should new editors join our meeting.
Structure of meeting when a new person attends. The group will do a roundtable doing a very brief introduction about yourself and generally what you work on. The new visitor will be asked quite high in the round table about them and what they need from the meeting, if they have any questions etc. Then we move on the roundtable of participants

2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on[edit]

  • Avocadobabygirl (talk) 21:01, 27 October 2023 (UTC) was at TDWG in Hobart, where Wiki (especially Data) popped up a few times. Now know what's the problem with our Mix n Match set that's preventing users from creating new items - will fix soon. Tiny bit of progress on loading arachnid type images. General okay to get Kōtuia data into Wikidata, just notifying museums first. Keen to chat about how National Services Te Paerangi and WANZ could collaborate.[reply]
  • Stitchbird2 I have not been very active in the wiki space this month. I read the book The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins and the fight for women in science (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123010216) (HIGHLY recommended). The book details Hopkins’ career from the 1960s to the 2000s and her role in leading 16 women faculty at MIT to write a report https://web.mit.edu/fnl/women/women.html which lead to MIT admitting gender discrimination and doing something about it. So I made a wikidata item of the book, updated some of the women’s papers in wikidata, and updated the Wikipedia pages of all these women citing the book. Also I’m making edits to the botanical parts of the Auckland Islands and Auckland Island Wikipedia pages, will work on these some more.
  • Marshelec spent several days in early October on the West Coast with Giantflightlessbirds supporting the West Coast Wikipedian at Large project, and contributed text and images to several articles in the Fox Glacier and Whataroa regions. Some of the highlights of recently improved articles are Fox Glacier (town), Whataroa, Waitangiroto Nature Reserve. Also began some badly-needed improvements to Rotorua, and continued support for the Critter of the Week weekly updates.
  • Wainuiomartian (talk) rewrote articles on Kirkcaldie and Stains and Hotel St George. Raised an issue to do with copyright and what to do when images are in the public domain but the institution that places them on the web don't state that.
  • User:Ambrosia10 attended TDWG and wrote this report. Working on her keynote for CitSciOz2023.
Had also presented at to the staff at the Wikimedia Foundation. Coming up she will be presenting at the Entomology Network Collections annual conference as well as participate and present at a Biononia Roundtripping workshop showing her disambiguation workflow and how to edit Wikidata in order to attribute specimens to that collector in Bionomia.
  • Noracrentiss (talk) Mix'n'Match on Turnbull Names2; drafted Okains Bay Museum article which led to accidentally getting a copyvio notice (subsequently fixed). Ambrosia10 provided a link to https://copyvios.toolforge.org/, a tool which enables checking for copyright violation.

3. Progress on Action Points and future events[edit]

If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
  • Further discussion re timing and planning of Wellington Wiki group's proposed events including Cuba Street photography event, Te Papa spiders event, Otari-Wilton's Bush article improvement event at Otari-Wilton's Bush, Ambrosia10s proposed New Zealand wide virtual Wikiblitz for the National parks of New Zealand. One thing to keep in mind is other Wiki events as this may affect both attendance and the support Wellington Wiki editors can provide to the event. For example the New Zealand WikiCon is likely to be held in April.
Ambrosia10 has heard from Dianne the WANZ EA and she has created a meetup account for NZ and a particular meetup for our group - see this link. In light of this can I suggest we plan the first meeting for next year and then all the subsequent ones to allow for easy notifications?
Ōtari-Wilton's Bush event/s - update to be given by Ambrosia10. We've heard back from Tim Park the manager of Ōtari-Wilton's Bush with information and suggestions. Although as a group we do still want to concentrate on getting Ōtari-Wilton's Bush article up to at least good status, we might also want to consider a group of editathons - perhaps on adding information to threatened species or species shown to be observed at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush as well. See these research grade or research grade threatened species iNaturalist observations at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush. If we hold 2 or 3 events to teach people to edit Wikipedia we may be likely to improve retention. What do people think? Are others prepared to support this and help with training folk? Noracrentiss has been advised that as at 18 October 2023 available dates for use of Leonard Cockayne Centre at Ōtari-Wiltons Bush in February and March 2024 are: 3 and 17 February (note Ambrosia10 is not available on 17 Feb) and 2, 9, 16 and 23 March. (Sundays are not available because of another permanent booking) Wifi is reportedly good. The group is opting for a Commons-oriented photo blitz date in late February and Ōtari to be pencilled in for 16 and 23 March 2024. Noracrentiss to action. Ambrosia10 had a further discussion with Giantflightlessbirds about this proposed two events. He too is busy until the beginning of December but is keen to support this initiative.
  • WITCon (a conference organised by Victoria University of Wellington Women in Tech) is on Saturday 18 November at Rutherford House, VUW Pipitea campus in Wellington. See this link for further information and here for registration.
  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.
Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10
  • Parliamentary Library The library has had it's Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. They are in the process of developing their project. Possible workshop and training might eventuate. Pakoire
Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page.

4. Good Article / Featured Article Work[edit]

  • Previously agreed to work on the Ōtari Wilton's Bush article with the aim of getting it to Good Article status during the proposed event at that location (see notes above). Given the further discussions regarding broadening the type of articles to be edited at the proposed Ōtari Wilton's Bush events it is suggested that editors feel free to work on this article leading up to those events.

5. Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of[edit]

  • Giantflightlessbirds recently contacted an iNaturalist user Grey Smith (8854 observations) [1]. He has kindly agreed to change his licence to CC BY, for all his photos past and future. That’s a huge pile of images. Giantflightlessbirds has suggested a collaborative event to systematically work through all the species Grey Smith has photographed and use them in Commons and articles.
