- 1142 – The Treaty of Shaoxing, ending the Jurchen campaigns against the Song Dynasty, was formally ratified when a Jin envoy visited the Southern Song court.
- 1492 – Members of the first voyage of Christopher Columbus reported the sighting of unknown light on their way to Guanahani.
- 1531 – Swiss Reformation leader Huldrych Zwingli (pictured) was killed in battle when Catholic cantons attacked in response to a food blockade being applied by his alliance.
- 1634 – A storm tide on the coast of North Frisia caused a massive flood that killed at least 8,000 people and split the island of Strand into three smaller islands.
- 1767 – Unable to go any further, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon made their final observations for what would become known as the Mason–Dixon line.
- 1776 – American Revolutionary War: The British Royal Navy defeated American ships at the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain, but gave American forces enough time to prepare their defenses for the Saratoga campaign.
- 1942 – World War II: At the Battle of Cape Esperance on the northwest coast of Guadalcanal, American ships intercepted and defeated a Japanese fleet on their way to destroy Henderson Field.
- 1950 – A field-sequential color system developed by Hungarian-American engineer Peter Goldmark became the first color television system to be adopted for commercial use, but it was abandoned only a year later.
- 1962 – Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council, the first Roman Catholic ecumenical council in 92 years.
- 1975 – The American weekly sketch comedy–variety show Saturday Night Live was broadcast for the first time.
- 1987 – Sri Lankan Civil War: The Indian Peace Keeping Force began Operation Pawan to take control of Jaffna from the Tamil Tigers to enforce their disarmament as a part of the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord.

- 1311 – The peerage and clergy of the Kingdom of England imposed the Ordinances of 1311 to restrict King Edward II's powers.
- 1614 – A group of merchants led by Adriaen Block presented a petition to the States General of the Netherlands to receive exclusive trading privileges for the New Netherland colony.
- 1797 – French Revolutionary Wars: The Royal Navy captured eleven Dutch Navy ships without any losses in the Battle of Camperdown.
- 1941 – Armed insurgents from the People's Liberation Army of Macedonia attacked Axis-occupied zones in the city of Prilep, beginning the National Liberation War of Macedonia.
- 1968 – Apollo 7 (lift-off pictured), the first manned mission of NASA's Apollo program, and the first three-man American space mission, launched from Complex 34 in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
