Almost identical templates; only difference for some is the hardcoded century number and/or text within noinclude sections. For the others, any fields added can be handled by #ifexpr conditionals. {{repeat|p|3}}ery (talk) 21:39, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 159#A related issue: Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map. Moreover, I want to note that I am also nominating the associated Module for deletion as well: Module:Middle East conflicts detailed map. Also, I am pinging everyone who has commented in the discussion that lead to this nomination so that they can formally give their opinion here (Doug Weller, power~enwiki, Paleo, PrimeHunter, Niele~enwiki, TheDJ, Kusma, Izno, xaosflux). Tradediatalk 15:34, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Because i am seeing a lot of misunderstanding in the comments below, allow me to clarify some things. It was my mistake referring to a previous discussion. I should have started from scratch. So here you go:

1- I am nominating only Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map.

2- I am not nominating Template:Syrian Civil War detailed map.

3- I am not nominating any other war map template. I love war map templates and think they are great lol.

4- On the other hand, I think Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map is bad and should be deleted for the following reasons :

- Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map is messed-up. It is so huge that for the last 9 months it was not even showing up. A desperate attempt to revive it about a month ago made it show up again. However, as you can see from looking at it, it does not render correctly. It is so huge that the dots end up being shifted. To see what I mean, look at how towns in north Turkey end up in the sea. Look at how towns in south Yemen end up in the sea. Look at how towns in north Syria end up in Turkey. Look at how towns in north Egypt end up in the sea, etc...Also, the map looks mangled and unprofessional (for example see the area of Syria and how the labels are a complete mess).

- In addition to the technical issues, the map is flawed on a conceptual level. Why do we need a template for all of the middle-east? The conflicts are not geographically related except for Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. For this we already have Template:Syrian, Iraqi, and Lebanese insurgencies detailed map. The Yemen conflict is not geographically related to the other conflicts mentioned before, so there is no need to look at them at the same time. Also, the map contains countries like Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia… However, there are no civil wars or even insurgencies in these countries. This map is pushing the envelope too far. It is simply unrealistic to have a template for the whole of the middle-east.

- Lets put this template out of its misery, especially that many people keep spending time and effort to keep it alive. Note that this template does not contain any datapoint, so nothing will be lost. To see this, take a look at the module that draws the template: Module:Middle East conflicts detailed map. You can see that all it does is combine all other templates into one giant unmanageable mess. I want us to remove this one bad apple that is polluting the environment and potentially hurting the reputation of all maps and Wikipedia.

- Most importantly, please do not comment here unless you have clicked on the template and looked at it carefully. Chances are it will not even load on your computer lol Tradediatalk 19:37, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Conditional Keep as I noted on another page, this template and its datapoints may be very useful - however it is far to large to use as-is in existing articles. Topic-related maps are an area we have much room for improvement in. — xaosflux Talk 16:12, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@xaosflux: There might be a misunderstanding. I am nominating Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map which is not Template:Syrian Civil War detailed map that you saw before. I agree with you that these maps are useful in general. However, my point is that this specific template is a mess. If we delete it, we do not lose any "datapoint". The datapoints are in the individual countries templates. The template I am nominating for deletion only combines all the other templates together into a giant unmanageable mess. Again, this nomination is not a general attack on the war maps, but rather an attempt to remove one bad apple that is polluting the environment and potentially hurting the reputation of all maps and Wikipedia. Comment: If there is no use for data on this after removing from articles where it is disruptive, then deleting as orphaned is fine by me. — xaosflux Talk 21:31, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, “there is no use for data on this”. I have included to the right a picture with a screenshot of Module:Middle East conflicts detailed map which draws the template in question. As you can see, the module code is 2 parts. The first part invokes country modules which contain the datapoints (orange oval). The second part is simply a caption with an explanation for the different colored icons (blue oval). Therefore, this template/module has no datapoints, and just adds together all the datapoints from the other country modules. Tradediatalk 08:50, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Keep. A detailed map and registration of the Syrian conflict is of uttermost importance in regard to Wikipedia's goals of open and accessible information. It helps lowering the level of fog of wars and by doing lowering human right abuses. The detailed (village-level) aspect is crucial for this. The loss of highly valuable data would be huge and a disaster for everyone, including journalist needing correct information about the Syrian conflict. The module works fine and users that do not need the amount of detail or use very low bandwidth can use the less detailed overview map or static maps instead. They are specifically created to fulfill the desire of people wanting a lighter version of the map. Please note that this page was already nominated for deletion on 23 July 2015. The result of the discussion was keep.--Niele~enwiki (talk) 17:41, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Niele~enwiki: What are you talking about?! I am nominating Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map, not the Syria map. Please read Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 159#A related issue: Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map carefully. Tradediatalk 18:25, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
User:Niele~enwiki is obviously talking about the Syria war map, which is a completely different template from the one that is being discussed here. It is indeed the Syria war map that "was already nominated for deletion on 23 July 2015". Therefore, I am striking out his vote. Also, I note that User:Doug Weller has pinged him once and I have pinged him once and wrote him a message but he did not reply to us inspite of him having done other edits in the meantime... • Comment Wikipedia is not here to aid journalists and I cannot believe that it is always up to date. User:Niele~enwiki, I can't find where it was nominated for AfD. It doesn't work fine, the map is a mess - it shows towns in the sea, in the wrong country, etc. It isn't a map of the Syrian conflict either, so why are you !voting for it on the basis that it is? Doug Weller talk 18:00, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete This is not the map that Niele~enwiki is !voting to keep. Doug Weller talk 15:45, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note to closing admin: Please note that User:Xaosflux above started with a "Conditional Keep" vote, however, he then commented, after I clarified things with him, that "If there is no use for data on this after removing from articles where it is disruptive, then deleting as orphaned is fine by me". Indeed the two conditions for him to be fine with deletion are satisfied. First, "there is no use for data", as can be seen from my last reply to him above (along with a screenshot). Second, the template is indeed "orphaned" since it was never transcluded on any article because it would crash it given its huge size. Therefore, the vote should be read as "deleting as orphaned is fine by me". Tradediatalk 23:59, 8 October 2017 (UTC) Also, see User:Xaosflux's comment at User talk:Drmies#Template:Middle East conflicts detailed map for a confirmation of what I just wrote. He wrote: "as this is no longer in articles, part of my conditional keep (it being orphaned) is satisfied, the other appears to be as well based on the rest of the discussion - that there are not useful historical mappoints that could be of use elsewhere."
