Proposals, July 2011
Please check how many articles qualify for a stub type before proposing it.
If (after approval) you create a stub type, please be sure to add it to the list of stub types. This page will be archived in its entirety once all discussions have been closed; there is no need to move them to another page.

Category:European rail station stubs is undersorted, but by CatScan the following should be viable (categories only if 60 which I think will apply to Spain and Latvia):
- {{Belgium-railstation-stub}} (Category:Belgian railway station stubs)
- {{Greece-railstation-stub}} (Category:Greek railway station stubs)
- {{Latvia-railstation-stub}} (Category:Latvian railway station stubs)

- {{Romania-railstation-stub}} (Category:Romanian railway station stubs)
- {{Russia-railstation-stub}} (Category:Russian railway station stubs)

- Given that Category:Norwegian people stubs is very big (over 2 pages), and Category:Norwegian politician stubs currently needs to be split by century of birth in order not to be, I think that this will make things easier. Note also that we already have similar stub categorization in other sub-national level places, uch as the states of the United States and the provinces of Canada. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 10:27, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

- Yes to the politicians and mayors, no to the general bios. As WS says, we don't generally split standard bios by subnational region - far better to split them by profession unless there's a distinct tie to a location (as there usually is with politicians - constituencies, etc). Some good news and some bad news. I've just finished sorting the Ross Dependency stubs, and there were a lot of mis-stubbed articles, so it's down to around 900 stubs. This can easily be split into three roughly equal loads by making the following:
- {{DufekCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Dufek Coast geography stubs (280 stubs)
- {{ShackletonCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Shackleton Coast geography stubs (260 stubs)
The bad news is that a lot of the stubs that were removed have gone into Category:Victoria Land geography stubs, which has now blown out to 1900 stubs. That's the last section of Antarctica to deal with. One section of it already looks worthwhile:
- {{McMurdoDryValleys-geo-stub}} / Category:McMurdo Dry Valleys geography stubs (150 stubs)
Note the plural, this is for the region of the valleys, not just for valleys per se. Grutness...wha? 00:58, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

- Category:English mayor stubs/{{England-mayor-stub}} - 212 stubs
- {{Scotland-provost-stub}}(upmerged template) - 29 (name difference is per permcat name, which appears to be per ENGVAR)
- {{Wales-mayor-stub}} - 3

At 900+, this is a pretty large category. A brief scan suggests that the following may at the very least get close to stand-alone cat size:

{{England-historian-stub}} / Category:English historian stubs (iff)- {{England-med-bio-stub}} / Category:English medical biography stubs (iff)
- {{England-crime-bio-stub}} / Category:English crime biography stubs (iff)

I have just sorted all of Graham Lands articles. Not just the stubs (though they make up 95% of the 1500 articles...) Graham Land is now comprehensively divided up into categories by landform and by its nine named coasts. But there are still 1360 stubs in Category:Graham Land geography stubs. So... stub types for the following three coasts will beat it down to a better size:
- {{DancoCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Danco Coast geography stubs (c. 240 stubs)
- {{FallièresCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Fallières Coast geography stubs (c. 230 stubs)
- {{GrahamCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Graham Coast geography stubs (c. 180 stubs)
...leaving 700-odd stubs in the "rump" Graham Land category. That will mean that all of Antarctica except the messy Ross Dependency/Victoria Land area are at comfortable stub category sizes! Grutness...wha? 14:15, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

The biography category still exists, and {{squash-stub}} now contains 20 articles. Propose making this category to provide a natural structure. Dawynn (talk) 12:20, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Looking at some of the larger sport stubs by country categories, the following should be useful; cats only if 60 are reached; upmerged templates only upmerged to the country cats:

Category:Ottoman Empire stubs has almost 400 articles, and some half of them (all these Pashas etc) are biographical articles. Given how the coverage of Ottoman-related articles is still low and most of the new ones are stubs, both numbers are likely to rise much further. Constantine ✍ 11:59, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

- Support speedy. However, it sure would have been nice if whoever tagged the stubs into the family would have also changed the category. Most of these are perm catted at the superfamily level, with only 23 in the permcat. Dawynn (talk) 22:42, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
- Question I changed a lot of these from {{Beetle-stub}} to {{Buprestidae-stub}}, but I don't understand most of what you said. What do you mean by "permcat"? It was my impression that the template was created in order to tag things and then create the category once there were enough of them. Is that not right? -GTBacchus(talk) 00:30, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- I think I figured it out. Permcat means the ordinary kind of category, not the stub one, and you're saying that a lot of those pages are in Category:Buprestoidea. I see that now. Hmm. -GTBacchus(talk) 00:32, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, sorry. "Permcat" is a stub-sorting project term. In this case, Category:Buprestidae and Category:Buprestoidea are perm(anent)-cat(egorie)s. With these taxonomy categories, if there's enough reason to have a stub category (that is, sufficient articles), then there's probably reason enough to have an accompanying permanent category with the same (and hopefully more!) articles as the stub category. Dawynn (talk) 02:26, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- After reading through my earlier post, I can see much room for confusion. Again, my apologies. As you deduced, I was just wishing that the Buprestidae articles had been moved into Category:Buprestidae instead of continuing to sit in Category:Buprestoidea. As far as following the guidelines of the stub-sorting project, you've done everything right in this case, as far as I can see. Dawynn (talk) 02:31, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

The category: Category:Pterophoridae stubs currently contains about 1,330 articles. They're about moths. I suggest creating templates and categories for the following subdivisions of the family:
- Subfamily Agdistinae - Category:Agdistinae stubs - {{Agdistinae-stub}} - (125 stubs)
- Subfamily Pterophorinae - Category:Pterophorinae stubs - {{Pterophorinae-stub}} - (250-300 stubs outside the two tribes below)
- Tribe Platyptilini - Category:Platyptilini stubs - {{Platyptilini-stub}} - (350-400 stubs)
- Tribe Oidaematophorini - Category:Oidaematophorini stubs - {{Oidaematophorini-stub}} - (250-300 stubs)
I hope I've included all relevant information. The numbers are rough estimates, except for the first one, which is precise at time of counting. Please let me know if you've got any further questions. -GTBacchus(talk) 00:44, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Someone has recently been creating a lot of short articles relating to seasons in European hockey. A proposal, but for a change, something other than a stub type. I'm putting it here because it's more likely to get actioned here than a simple comment on the talk page. {{Stub}}'s talk page starts with two very useful templates - {{WikiProject Stub sorting}} and {{WPSS-talk}}, which read:
- " This {{pagetype}} is maintained by WikiProject Stub sorting, an attempt to bring some sort of order to Wikipedia. If you would like to participate, you can choose to improve/expand the articles containing this stub notice, or visit the project page, where you can join the project and see a list of open tasks."
and
- "Most of the discussion relating to this and other stub categories occurs at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting. You may wish to consider leaving a note there rather than here."
How often have we seen, at WP:SFD or elsewhere, someone say "this was discussed on the category's talk page"? I think it would be a very good idea if a bot could be used to put these on the talk page of every stub template and category, preferably run regularly so that we ensure it's on all new stub types too.
Any thoughts? Grutness...wha? 07:52, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- This isn't a bad idea - I think it would be a great help. Doesn't even need to be a separate bot - AWB can probably do it just as well. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:57, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- I'm for it. Just be careful with the bot. Not everything that has 'stub' in the name has to do with our project. For instance, Category:Steubenville Stubs players keeps showing up in several of our lists of all stub categories, even though it has nothing to do with our project. Evidently, the Steubenville Stubs were some kind of baseball team back in the early 1900's or so. This category should not be tagged with any WPSS-related templates. (At this time, this and Category:WikiProject Motorcycling stubs are the only non-WPSS "stub" categories that I'm aware of). May have to somehow blacklist such specific instances to make the bot ignore them. Dawynn (talk) 23:41, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Category:Queen Maud Land geography stubs is still fairly swollen at about 1200 stubs. QML is divided into five regions, and the best-explored two, Princess Astrid Coast and Princess Martha Coast, will probably account for about 400 stubs each. Therefore:

Great God - this is an awful place! Finally got this continent just about sorted, though - there are only five categories of Antarctica geo-stubs with over 800 stubs, and of those only two have over 1200: Ross Dependency (1600) and Graham Land (1700). The following should hopefully reduce them considerably:
{{KingEdwardVIILand-geo-stub}} / Category:King Edward VII Land geography stubs (iff)- {{TrinityPeninsula-geo-stub}} / Category:Trinity Peninsula geography stubs (iff)
Two of the other three over-large categories (Victoria Land and Queen Maud Land, about 1150 each) aren't easy to split, but South Shetland geography stubs (currently 1020 stubs) can be easily subdivided:
- {{LivingstonIsland-geo-stub}} / Category:Livingston Island geography stubs and
- {{KingGeorgeIslandAQ-geo-stub}} / Category:King George Island (South Shetland Islands) geography stubs (AQ is the code for Antarctica)
...should each remove about 300 stubs from it. With any luck, that will be just about it for Antarctica, unless I can work out some other Graham Land split! Grutness...wha? 12:35, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

- Support, but the {{SolomonIslands-}} types should just be {{Solomons-sport-stub}}, {{Solomons-sport-bio-stub}}, and {{Solomons-sports-venue-stub}}. Grutness...wha? 01:20, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- Removing the Solomon Islands from this request. Because of the typo, I missed that I had already requested these. I have already re-requested them under the correct names above. Dawynn (talk) 01:46, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Antarctica IV

A few more Antarctica stub types. Just about got East Antarctica licked now (it tastes icy). These three should clear the bulk of what's left:
- {{MacRobertsonLand-geo-stub}} / Category:Mac. Robertson Land geography stubs (iff)
- {{OatesLand-geo-stub}} / Category:Oates Land geography stubs (iff)
- {{GeorgeVLand-geo-stub}} / Category:George V Land geography stubs (iff)
Grutness...wha? 11:09, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
- Ach - to hell with it. Add in the final few to complete East Antarctica - these will probably remain upmerged, but they might as well go in for completion:
- {{CoatsLand-geo-stub}} / Category:Coats Land geography stubs (iff)
- {{KempLand-geo-stub}} / Category:Kemp Land geography stubs (iff)
- {{KaiserWilhelmIILand-geo-stub}} / Category:Kaiser Wilhelm II Land geography stubs (iff)
- {{PrincessElizabethLand-geo-stub}} / Category:Princess Elizabeth Land geography stubs (iff)
- {{FilchnerRonne-geo-stub}} / Category:Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf geography stubs (iff)
- The last one is a problem. Believe it or not, there doesn't seem to be any name for the wedge of Antarctica between about 35° and 80°W further south than the base of the Antarctic Peninsula. Most of it is covered by the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, though, so this seems the most appropriate name.
- I also made {{AdelaideIsland-geo-stub}} as a redirect to the Graham Land template, thinking it might get enough to be useful. IThere are over 100 stubs marked with it, so I'd like to turn that into a full template and category.
- If all of these are done, everywhere on the Big Ice will have a specific subtype of East or West Antarctica. There may still be one or two very large sections that will need paring down (Graham Land is likely to have a couple of thousand stubs) but other than that, this will be just about it. - Support all, with two minor tweaks I'd change that "Dominican" category to "Dominican Republic" if I were you, and it's probably better to stick with "Trinidad and Tobago" rather than having one category at "Trinidadian". Grutness...wha? 11:12, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Just a thought for discussion rather than a firm proposal - is it would having stub templates for mayors for each of the US's states, as subtypes of the politician stubs? The thought came to me while SFD'ing a Montclair-politician-stub which we seem to have inherited. Would a NewJersey-mayor-stub, for mayors of cities/boroughs/towns in New Jersey be useful, and the same for the other states? Grutness...wha? 00:49, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Support. We have precedent (Category:New York mayor stubs) and permcats (subcategories of Category:Mayors of places in the United States). Dawynn (talk) 01:23, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Support. In fact, I believe we already do this for some states (CF Category:California mayor stubs). --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:05, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- A scan shows that we have for California, Massachusetts and New York. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:34, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
- And a different scan confirms that there are plently of articles in the Category:Mayors of places in New Jersey category tree to justfy a stub category. Not all of the states, though - Alabama has only 26. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:51, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
