MobileMe is a subscription-based collection of online services and software offered by Apple Inc. Announced at WWDC 2008, it replaced the current .Mac service on July 9th, 2008. All current .Mac members were migrated to MobileMe automatically.[1]

Difference between .Mac and MobileMe

While mostly replacing .Mac (which was primarily centered around internet services for Apple's desktop and notebook computers), MobileMe provides Internet services for both Mac OS X and the iPhone OS as well as Microsoft Windows users. Users are no longer restricted to a Mac running software like Mail and iCal and can access personal data from any computer connected to the internet and running MobileMe services.

Several .Mac features were lost after the transition to MobileMe. Support for Mac OS X v10.3 has been dropped. iCards, web access to bookmarks, and .Mac slides were also dropped.[2]

Features

Storage
20 GB of online storage featuring 200 GB of monthly transfer. The family pack includes this for the main user as well as 5 GB of storage and 50 GB of transfer for each sub user (up to four additional users)
Mail
Push Mail. Includes a @me.com email address (previous .mac users also keep their @mac.com address and can use either as both addresses are linked). When a message is received it is sent directly to all the user's devices.
Address Book
Address Book (Push). When a contact is added or amended it is updated immediately on all the user's devices.
Calendar
Calendar (Push). When a calendar appointment is added or amended it is updated immediately on all the user's devices.
Gallery
Public photo gallery. Photos can be uploaded in the web browser or synced by iPhoto on a Mac and by sending it from the iPhone and iPod touch.
iDisk
iDisk, which is accessible via a web browser, the Finder on a Mac, or as a remote disk in Microsoft Windows. The iDisk can also share files by emailing a link to the intended recipient. Another feature is to set an expiration on the link. This means access to file will stop after a set number of downloads or after certain time period.
Web 2.0
MobileMe uses Ajax to attempt to simulate the look and feel of desktop applications in the user's web browser.
Browser support
Supported browsers are: Safari 3 or later (Mac + PC), Firefox 2 or later (Mac + PC), or Internet Explorer 7 (PC) or later.

NOTE: Mac users can still use MobileMe to host their iWeb websites and Mac users running Mac OS X 10.5 or later can use the Back to My Mac feature.

Pricing

An Individual purchase of a MobileMe account for one-year is US$99 (£59/79€), while a Family Pack subscription (which includes one individual account and four family accounts with a specific email address for each one) is US$149 (£89/119€) for one year. The Individual account will have 20 GB of combined email and file storage and 200 GB (100GB in Europe) of monthly data transfer, while the Family Pack will have the storage of an Individual account as above, plus for each of the four additional accounts in the Pack, 5 GB (2,5GB in Europe) of combined email and file storage, and 50 GB of monthly data transfer.

Purchase with Devices

A MobileMe account can be obtained from Apple Retail or Online for $30 off MSRP, or $69.95, with purchase of a new Mac computer or iPhone 3G.

Release

The launch of MobileMe took place on July 9, 2008, while www.mac.com was taken offline at 6pm Pacific Time on July 9th, 2008, and the MobileMe service went live between 6pm and 12am Pacific Time.[3]
