In regards to email, I did try to email you once but I'm not sure why it didn't work. Anyway, can you share your thoughts with me concerning my posts at WT:DISCOG or WT:WPMUSIC? It's about the intro for the Tears for Fears discography. I was looking for feedback on this but so far hardly any responses have come in, except from one editor whom I believe is a sock of the anonymous IP I was having problems with over the article's intro (see my talk page). Minor edit default[edit]

Hello. You appear to have the option in Special:Preferences for "Mark all edits minor by default" turned on (by default it is off), however the majority of your edits are not WP:MINOR. Please go to Preference -> Editing, and turn this option off. Thanks! At the time I set that option, I believed the vast majority of my edits would be minor. Such is not the case, so I turned it off shortly after your posting. Thank you for noting it. I will also comment at the discussion you linked to, as my experience is that it's not a useful option, since far too many edits wind up being marked minor by default and it seems a bit dangerous for that reason. — Becksguy (talk) 03:59, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your concern that consensus is followed and that secret pages are given a fair hearing; however, Jclemens' edit did follow consensus after this fairly detailed discussion. Your revert is the edit that people might feel does not have consensus, especially as a revert of a good faith edit is in itself considered against consensus. If you wish to create some support for a position of tolerance toward secret pages that is an appropriate and laudable campaign. However, it is not considered appropriate to revert consensus edits because a person does not agree with them. And updating policy or guideline pages cannot be held up because there are discussions or edits going on elsewhere that will be impacted by the update - I do believe we have at least one ArbCom ruling on that. Jclemens' edit should be restored until such time as it can be shown that there is a consensus supporting secret pages. To reduce any drama or ill will, it would helpful if you restored the edit. In my life I have learned to listen to friendly advice. I very strongly believe that a guideline discussion about a change in WP:UP (specifically for WP:UP#GAMES) does not apply—nor was it meant to apply—to a policy page at WP:NOT (specifically WP:MYSPACE), and therefore it is not a reversion against consensus. If I thought it was, I wouldn't have done it. Also note that Jclemens didn't mind. I believe the Jclemens edit and my edit both were good faith edits. I will write up a summary and a rationale for the RfC at WP:NOTMYSPACE apply to secret pages?, and restore the phrase I reverted per your advice. It's entirely possible to be civil when "winning", but the true test of a person's character is how they behave when not prevailing. Your conduct with respect to the WP:NOT change I proposed and the ensuing RfC has been truly exemplary and something entirely too rare on Wikipedia. You have won my respect through your conduct. If the opportunity arises, I'd rather "lose" an argument to you than "win" one with most of the other participants here. Wikipedia needs more folks like you. I'd like to believe I wasn't trying to win (well, maybe a little bit), rather hoping to convince some editors that being overly strict wasn't always in our best interest in keeping new and younger editors. Hey, I noticed that you listed yourself as invoked in the WikiProject Journalism project, and I hoped that you could help out on another collaborative community edited project.

I run quippd, a collaboratively edited social news site, which mixes elements of Wikis, social networking, and social news sites. You can get some more information about what we are doing at: http://quippd.com/about/intro

Basically, we want to get good coverage on news stories, collaboratively edited, like Wikipedia. We are trying to take the ideas of WikiFactCheck -- to make news less biased and speedier (unlike something like Wikinews). I hate the term forest products, as it's newsprint. Just like it's not human resources, it's personnel. Some have said that's what important in all this cultural/technology change is the craft of journalism. Whether the copy came by horseback, ship dispatches, telegraph, or computer. Whether printed on the early single sheet presses, or modern color high speed web presses, and delivered/sold by newsies, paperboys, or folks delivering before their regular job. Or even delivered via TV broadcast and digital technology. I've heard the expression that the newspaper is just a medium, a delivery system, as it were. A way of delivering the thoughts about what's important that happened from the mind of a reporter to the mind of a reader. Yet, I can't help feeling a sense of loss. Yes, American newspapers are dying financially, and the NYT had to decrease costs to stay in business. But I will miss being able to have a paper in my hands. And the ink stains (although less so nowadays). But if there was more of the "comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable" ethos, that would be even better. Some of it may be, but nearly enough, in my book. Those 'internet only non-mainstream news sources' have to rely on precarious financial models. As David Halberstam pointed out in The Powers That Be, most of the press's bite (and its ability to bite) was as a result of financial models that guaranteed some measure of independence and staying power. NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4[edit]

We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library[edit]

The next DC Wikimedia meetup is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 3:30-5:30 pm at the Tenleytown Library (adjacent to the Tenleytown Metro Station, Red Line), followed by dinner & socializing at some nearby place.

Normally, I wouldn't assess an editorial change as deserving to be in the lede, but because she will become the first female top editor in the Grey Lady's history, I think it deserves mention, and probably up top. Everything is going well, just getting older, one day at a time.

I noticed that someone reverted your inclusion. That inclusion is really an editorial judgement. I don't think any of us would normally include a change of newsroom leadership. But considering the importance of the NYT as the "paper of record", breaking 160 years of tradition, the Guardian piece on the change, and the history of women at the Times—about which a book was published in 1992, Girls in the Balcony by Nan Robertson—I'd say a brief mention in the lede was warranted. — Becksguy (talk) 22:55, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you about most personnel changes being non-events, but I also agree with your take on this one warranting notice, and within the lede. Given the Robertson book, and the gender issues referenced in the piece, I think the Abramson appointment needs to be included (with The Guardian piece footnoted). Appreciate your recent comment at the Media Matters article[edit]

The more I've been thinking about it, the more my position has returned to where it was every other time the discussion has happened. It's kind of bizarre to think we should force a label on the organization. It's fine to quote others (as we do in the rest of the article) who use "liberal" to describe MM, but the idea that we should go out of our way to call attention to that characterization, to force the label on them, seems very weird to me. For a parallel situation with a politician, if a left-of-center Senator said something like, "I stand for progressive values, such as high quality public education, civil rights," and so forth, would it be right to modify that quote or crop it to avoid saying "progressive" and instead say "liberal"? Should the article say, "Senator Jones says that he stands up for liberal values, such as "high quality public education, civil rights..."? That seems utterly crazy, but it's basically the same as what's being proposed for MM. Though I suppose that it's not quite that way, since their formulation would be "Jones says he stands for values that are often described in news sources as liberal..." Wikimedia District of Columbia, the newest officially recognized chapter, is holding its Annual Membership Meeting at 1pm on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library.

Agenda items include:

  • election of the Board of Directors for the next two years
  • approval of a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year
  • report on the activities and accomplishments of the past year
  • social gathering afterwards at a nearby restaurant

Candidate nominations are open until 11:59pm EDT on Saturday, September 24. We encourage you to consider being a candidate. (see see candidate instructions)

The meeting is open to both the general public and members from within the DC-MD-VA-WV-DE region and beyond. We encourage everyone to attend!
