Towns

I see you've just been through a string of towns and villages in Berwickshie, which I either created or contributed to, and categorised them accordingly. I am rather shocked I didn't do this. Nice improvement on entry for Whitekirk ... only the postal town is Dunbar (not North Berwick) and the postal code is EH42 (not EH39). I'm not sure how to make that change so perhaps you coudl do the necessary. Cheers - Whitekirk Witch

Category of Vermont cusine

Hi Brendandh. Inclusion of these foods in my homestate's category would not exclude any other peoples' use. It is not a claim of exclusivity. You might, for example, look at Québecose cusine. There is at least locally, distinction in what Vermonters eat and drink. Partly in its continuing difference from other U.S. states. Some of the things are influence of a British history, and others from the state's proximity to French Canada. These foods are things that Vermonters eat. Historic Houses in Scotland

I wondered if you and any of the 'Scottish team' were aware that a "discussion" had taken place regarding this title and the decision taken to rename it "Houses in Scotland". Actually, I think your house is historic. "Historic" is a POV word with many meanings. From the perspective of many Americans, it would definitely be applicable to any house that was built before the establishment of the Untied States. For that matter, the 100-year-old house that I reside in here in Ealing is "historic" by my standards and the standards of many peopl from North America and Oceania.

Anyhow, "historic" is a subjective word with many interpretations. Categories need objective definitions; subjective inclusion criteria do not work (see Wikipedia:Overcategorization and the examples therein). I have already given ample explanation for why the word "historic" should not be used for categorization; just look at the nominations from Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 June 19 and Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 June 21. I am honestly tired of trying to communicate my viewpoint to people who either cannot understand or are unwilling to understand, so I really do not feel like discussing this further.

I apologize for not contacting everyone involved, but as you can see, the nomination of the Scotland categories were part of a much broader set of nominations. What an incredibly pompous statement. Have you ever considered that "your viewpoint" is wrong! I think that some of us are sufficiently intelligent to understand what a Historic House is, and is not, in our own country. Never have I read such ludicrous arguments on such a simple topic, which no-one in Scotland would ever have dreamed would warrant even a discussion. The simplest answer to them all is this: would someone referring to Wikipedia go looking for a Historic House under that heading, or under Houses in Scotland. I think the answer speaks for itself. Hugh Douglas

I notice that you have recently moved Hugh Douglas' page to Hugh Douglas (American footballer). "Footballer" is a term rarely used in the US, and never used for American football players. If you have the time, I'd suggest again moving the pages to Hugh Douglas (football player) or Hugh Douglas (American football), which are both commonly accepted article names for American football players. Early Douglases

Hello again, yes I have the downloaded copy of the RoM so can do any searches you might need. Incidentally, there is a mention of Bishop Bricius referring to his uncle on his mother's side as Freskin de Kerdal who gives a church of Devarth (Daviot) as a prebend. The interesting bit is the name "Freskin"; no one can prove that this Freskin was from the de Moravia family but the name suggests he may have been, so if he was then this could be the often mentioned tie up between the Douglases and Murrays. RE:Template

Sorry, was away. I'm not aware of any such template. You are always free to design your own template, which isn't very hard, and put it in the article. BTW, looking at the Sholto Douglas article, it says:

The victory was so nearly Donald's when a certain noble man, disdaining to see so bad a cause have good successe, struck in for the king and turned the fortunes of the day. When the king inquired about the knight who had done such valuable service, somebody exclaimed "Sholto du glasse!"...."Behold the black gray man!"

That's really interesting that they developed that myth ... and actually, "Sholto du glasse" is Gaelic, Seall thu dubh-ghlas and means what he says, though dubh-ghlas should be "dark grey" rather than "Black Grey". Hamiltons and succession box images

Concerning the peerage header, I will fix that, I though I may have screwed it up a bit. The standards state, however, that the header that goes on the template is that of the original incarnation, which was Scotland. After Scotland was merged to form Great Britain, the peerages merged as well. But I will fix the template for the transitional person. An alternative is to split the titles between Scottish and British peerages as a title cannot be in both at the same time.

It was no problem. I have hours of free time at work but can only use the computer. I realized my mistake and felt like just fixing the entire problem. I may later go into the other joint-peers and see if their pages have the same issue. Its mostly just because we are removing the editable parameter of Template:s-reg and I want to make sure that a smooth transition ensues since very few people have found that little glitch. But I also enjoy learning more and that was an interesting thing to learn. I never knew the old peerages still survived.

Irish articles assessments

It seems that the assessment of Irish articles has fallen off the radar but recently Flowerpotman, Sarah777 and I have been doing a little work on this as well as actually classifying articles (actually Sarah has done the most work). Anyway, you are listed as a member of the WikiProject hence this post.

• The first thing that needs doing is to work on the WikiProject template. Actually there are two templates both of which get recorded by the assessment statistics bot that collects the ratings and creates the listings in the category Category:Ireland articles by quality. The two project templates are {{Irelandproj}} listed on the main project page and {{WikiProject Ireland}} listed on the assessment page—the first allows both quality and importance rating as well as nesting but no reviewer comments, while the second allows quality rating and comments but the importance does not seem to work and comments are not included. This needs to be fixed, so we use one that works fully—can you help?

• The next thing is to decide if we just let editors assess as they wish or to create some criteria or guidelines for rating the quality and importance of the Irish articles. Personally I am in favour of some guidelines—some will be easy to decide while others are a little more complex. What do you think?

• Some projects make lists of articles for assessment while other go after groups of articles by category. What should we do? A mixture of both by using a "To do list"?

• As of the last assessment statistics bot run on Sunday, August 20, only 1462 articles have been tagged, of which 1156 have been assessed for quality but 660 of these have no importance value.

• Besides these 1462 there must be hundreds more untagged articles that should be tagged when we get the template issue mentioned above fixed.

We are not bad in our assessments but some projects have all their articles assessed while others are lacking more than we are. We can really use a few active editors to bring assessments to the fore. Please reply on the assessment talk page as to what you can do. Please help out. ww2censor 17:10, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

You say Pomona...

I recently removed a fact tag from Mainland, Orkney and put in a couple of references purporting to show the name 'Pomona' came from a 16th century mistranslation of the latin. Only afterwards did I notice your remark on the talk page about John of Fordun. Unfortuntaely I don't have access to the historic documents concerned.

If you do, could I ask you to boldly amend the existing sentence to something along the lines of:

The island is sometimes referred to as Pomona, a name which has never been used locally, and that some claim stems from a sixteenth century mis-translation by George Buchanan (1506-1582). However, this is erroneous as the name appears in the xth century... <ref>

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Talk:James I of England, without good reason. They need to have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. We have some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Infobox issues, 1st Earl of Angus

The problem is that you insist on using Infobox Monarch in the article about a man who was not a monarch. Being married to a daughter of a monarch does not make one a monarch. Neither does being "the progenitor of a dynasty which for some time ruled Scotland de facto". The fact that "his blood runs in the veins of not just the present British Royal Family, but that of Monaco and other extant European Houses" does not make him a monarch. It is clear what the word monarch means and it is therefore clear that he was not a monarch. As he was not a monarch, it makes no sense to use Infobox Monarch in the articles about him, his father, grandfather, etc.

Removing false information is very helpful to the project and that's what I've been doing. Claiming that he was a monarch and insisting on treating him as a monarch is not helpful to the project.

He wasn't royal either, so using Template:Infobox royalty doesn't make sense. The community has agreed not to use Template:Infobox royalty in articles about Anne, Princess Royal's children because they bear no royal title and they are certainly more royal than the 1st Earl of Angus. Soutra Hospital

Hi!

My name is Fredrik. I live in Norway and I am doing some research on the Soutra Hospital for a fictional book. If I understand correctly you added this information: "Following the disgrace of Stephen Fleming, a Master of the Hospital, those estates entailed to the Hospital were confiscated by the Crown in the 1460s, and given to Trinity College Hospital in Edinburgh, leaving the establishment without income" on thw Wikipedia article.

I can not find this in my material, can you give me the source (the best would be a scan or somthing). I see Fleming been sad to be a renegade and a disgrace several places, but I have no onformation about his actions.

Extinct earldoms

I wasn't referring to the extant earldoms, rather to earlier creations (I don't doubt the Earl and Countess of Mar are alive and well as is the Duke of Hamilton). I was very unsure if I should add the category to the Angus and Mar articles. I don't know if the ancient mormaerdom of Angus can be considered extinct or what the status of the 1329 creation is. I am also unsure of the Mar earldoms created for members of the Scottish Royal family, are they extinct or did they technically merge in the Crown? As for the Cambridge earldom I think the first creation of 1340 can be considered extinct. Tryde (talk) 14:18, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

More problems than that I fear. The Hamilton page claims they hold the Cambridge earldom which is extinct according to Debretts/Cracrofts as an English peerage. There seems to be a confusion as to the later 'resignation/regrant' - only possible for Scottish titles - and English peerage law based on reading the Scottish (S) creation of Arran and Cambridge as two creations S+E. Then we have the problem of the French 'Dukedom' which uncited claims that title by what remainder is anyone's guess. Garlicplanting (talk) 15:36, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Well Debrett's is wrong. See here [2] page 383. There has been no regrant since then and the Earldom of Cambridge is part of the Dukedom of Hamilton.Brendandh (talk) 12:42, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
