Brits site

[edit]

{{helpme}} is Encyclopædia Britannica a reliable source? Also I would like to make my user page Red.

More or less, yes. It is considered a tertiary source, so care is needed; other, more direct sources would be preferred. It rather depends on the usage; if you have a specific query about the reliability of a source, you could ask on the reliable sources noticeboard.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.
Best wishes,  Chzz   ►  03:25, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I'll check on your supplementary userpage question, and answer here soon  Chzz   ►  03:25, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible to set the background for the editable portion of your userpage with code <div style="background-color:red"> and a corresponding </div> at the end - as I have done with this edit. I don't know if I'd recommend it though. It's not really possible to colour the entire page, because some parts are controlled by the wiki software.  Chzz   ►  03:29, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}} How can I create good articles without problems like this {{csb-pageincludes|1=http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Baltic+religion}}? I got the Information from The Britannica Encyclopaedia but it appears to be from The free Encyclopaedia ?

I think that they mean "free" as in you don't have to pay for it; however, the content is still copyrighted by Brittanica, and therefore not allowed here. Any content you post here must be written in your own words.

While I'm here, would you mind toning down the red somewhat? It's rather painful to look at. Thanks. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:17, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't Notify me even if you're thinking about deleting it.

[edit]

If I create any articles that are deleted please don't notify me until after the articles are deleted otherwise I may receive a unnecessary amount of dramatic messages Dr. Szląchski (talk) 23:37, 16 August 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Note

[edit]

Please don't copy material directly from Wikispecies. The format doesn't translate well from one project to the other; in particular, I'm thinking of the article you tried to write on Dr Culberson -- it was such a mess I had to delete it and start from scratch (Chicita F. Culberson is the name she uses, for one thing). DS (talk) 04:37, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When I create new articles don't be afraid to.

[edit]

Delete any copyright violations or any thing that you think might be a copyright violation. Delete the article or request the article for deletion. Change the article in any way shape or form. I will try my hardest to make the articles reliable, not copies of any deleted articles, and above all not a copyright violations. however if I fail in any way, shape or form feel free to correct me. Remember I don't care about these articles I am just trying to help Wikipedia Dr. Szląchski (talk) 03:31, 18 August 2009 (UTC). And if one of my article appears to be advertisement please delete it because for one reason it is from a (user draft)Dr. Szląchski (talk) 03:46, 18 August 2009 (UTC). Also I don't think I did it but if I recreated a previously deleted article it was entirely by accident please delete it Dr. Szląchski (talk) 04:14, 18 August 2009 (UTC)![reply]

Copying material from user drafts

[edit]

Hello Dr. Szląchski, I see that you've been creating articles by copying material from other users' draft subpages:

Please stop. Copy-pasting content is bad from a copyright standpoint (see WP:CUTPASTE). Moreover it is inconsiderate to do so without first asking the author. Thanks, Melchoir (talk) 04:37, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Janet E. Marsh, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Janet E. Marsh. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Copying from user drafts

[edit]

Hi,

I just finished cleaning up a number of cut and paste moves you performed on user space drafts in order to create new articles. While no one on wikipedia owns any content they create, our terms of use dictate that individuals must be credited with contributions. When you create an article from a userspace draft without merging the history, you break that chain of attribution. Cleaning up after such actions, especially when the original draft page is not known, is tedious and generally requires the attention of an administrator (because pages must be deleted during the history merge process). It generates work for a number of people.

Please do not create any other articles in this fashion.

Furthermore, although it would technically be acceptable for you to bring a userspace draft from someone else's userspace, it is considered rude to reach into someone else's draft space and lift an article without asking (This changes if the editor is clearly not active, but the copyright concerns remain).

Thanks for your attention and I would appreciate any help you can render at This thread on the administrators' noticeboard. Protonk (talk) 06:45, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Starry Rockfish, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://www.acfishing.com/fishid/starry.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 02:23, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not bad! If I may offer some more advice...

  • Capitalization can be a tricky issue. The page was created at Starry Rockfish, but I moved it to Starry rockfish, because the phrase used in the source is an uncapitalized "starry rockfish". Whenever you're not sure about a style issue like this, you can check out similar articles. For example, the articles in Category:Sebastidae all follow the same pattern.
  • When you create a new article, make sure that there isn't already an existing article. This can be harder than it sounds, because your topic can have many names. In this case the article Sebastes constellatus was actually created as a stub by User:Igotafish a few days ago. I noticed this because I was about to make Sebastes constellatus a redirect to Starry rockfish. (I've since taken care of it.) In general, after you create a new article, it's a good idea to make redirects from any alternate names.
  • For articles on species, the taxobox has a very particular format, which is hard to remember. What I do in these cases is copy the format from a related article. In order to fill in the last couple fields, I copied the format from Pacific ocean perch. I wasn't sure of the binomial authority, so I looked that up on Google.
  • Don't forget to add wikilinks to public-domain text that you copied in, as it won't have any to begin with. I added a few here. You don't want to go overboard, but links to locations and special terminology help. I left a link to Thetis Bank, which doesn't have an article yet, but probably should; redlinks are okay in moderation.

Cheers! Melchoir (talk) 04:32, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If there anyway I can join wiki project fish or something of that nature?

Yes, you can. See WikiProject Fishes – this is a project that focuses on that subject. To add yourself as a participant, all you need to do is edit the section titled "participants" on that page. That page should also give you a pretty clear overview of the project, and if you need more help, you can probably ask a question on their talk page. I hope that answers your question! [edit]

Hi, Dr. Szląchski. I appreciate your efforts to clean up articles with the automated tools. However, many of your edits are being reverted because they don't comply with WP guidelines and are considered overlinking. For example, [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8] are just a few in which you are linking commonly understood English words. Overlinking undermines the usefulness of page links for our readers. Please read and understand the guidelines at Wikipedia:Linking before making more link additions. This also goes for any other guidelines for which you may be unsure. If you have questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck with your editing. CactusWriter | needles 07:09, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a little puzzled as to why you labeled this as patent nonsense. It was an extremely short article that did not convey much pertinent information, but it was perfectly legible and coherent. Hi Dr. Szląchsk, a quick note about this tagging, there is enough context to identify the subject. From that one line a reader can tell that Fayoum FC is an Egyptian football team that plays in a professional league. {{db-nocontext}} is only for articles in which you can not understand what the subject is. If you have any questions or need any help, let me know, I would be happy to assist. --kelapstick (talk) 20:48, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

Several points...

  1. Request #38536 (Bishbashandbosh). You marked this as "too similar", but you had already created the account. Why did you mark it as similar?
  2. Request #38541 (Tell_The_Real_Truth). Willking1979 marked this request as a "username vio". Why did you then reopen the request almost two hours later, and close it as "too similar"?
  3. Request #38611 (Cristo777). Jamesofur handled the request, and created the account. Why did you then reopen the request?

Please can you answer these questions for me? Thanks, Stwalkerstertalk ] 23:51, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Coaching

[edit]

Hi Dr.Szląchedzki. I hate to break it to you, but I just don't think now is the best time to start Admin coaching (see the suggested requirements for coaching). I suggest going through the list and perhaps getting another six months of experience around Wikipedia before requesting an admin coach. Most successful candidates at WP:RFA have at least a year's experience, 10,000 edits, and experience in multiple areas of the project. I'm sure you'll make a great sysop someday but I just don't think you're ready yet. Get at least another six months of experience, and if you're still interested, I'll be happy to coach you. But for the time being, if you've got any file/image/media questions, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page and I'll do my best to answer them for you.
