I noticed that you just blocked this user for edit filter tripping. Did you mean to only do so for 24 hours? I didn't look at the filter hits themselves, but I usually see indefinite blocks occur as a result. Just wanted to give you an FYI in case you, by chance, didn't mean to set an expiration. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:50, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

24 hours was intentional. All of the edits that triggered the edit filter were essentially "test edits" - just adding some random text to the article - rather than anything apparently malicious. 24 hours is enough to stop the immediate disruption, but lenient enough to allow them to return if they want to move beyond test edits and actually contribute. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:55, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

Edit on pages

Hello, I do work for Brenntag. My major edit was for the Brenntag home page to add a genuine link. We have launched a portal which I'd like to add as a legitimate addition. How do I do this without breaking the rules.

Regards, kluze08

According to Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines (see WP:COI for details) you should not, in general, be editing articles where you have a such a conflict. If you think the external link should be added to the article, you can make that suggestion on the article's talk page. Then uninvolved editors can take a look a decide whether it is appropriate or not. Personally, I don't think an external link to the company's "online platform for digital marketing and e-commerce" is necessary for the article and the link in the company's main website, which is already listed in the External links section, is sufficient. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:07, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Sock of

Hi, you blocked Drama panchi (talk · contribs) last month for copyright and general competency. They've returned as BeypanahDrama (talk · contribs), and it's a really obvious sockpuppet with the same competency concerns. The editor interaction report makes it really clear, plus they've created several articles in main space that they created earlier that are in draft space. Would you mind taking a look? Thanks! Ravensfire (talk) 14:38, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Regarding User:Aasthabd

Hi Edgar181. You deleted Aasthabd (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)'s user page for G11. Please refer to my UAA report currently there [1]. Since all his created pages have been deleted I am unable to remember the specifics, but I UAA'ed him as his username seems to be related to the company article he created and then deleted. Thus I believe he should be indefed for promotional UAA. Regards, Optakeover(U)(T)(C) 14:38, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

In fact, you might want to refer to [2] and tally this to his deleted page. Optakeover(U)(T)(C) 14:39, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
I have now blocked the user. Thanks for letting me know. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:44, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Why did you decline my report at WP:AIV? It wasn't a content dispute, it was pure vandalism (or at worse WP:NOTHERE). Hjuhbj ssb should be banned. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 03:02, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

AIV is for obvious vandalism. Administrators are not experts in every topic and can't necessarily tell if certain information is correct or incorrect, so under these conditions immediately blocking isn't appropriate and other venues such as WP:ANI where more complex issues can be evaluated are better at handling it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:28, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Need for registered editor to make major edit

The purported “3D” structure shown in the Abamectin box is not in fact 3D when clicked; rather, it presents this macrocycle errantly/deceptively as a planar, PAH-like form. To add insult to injury, the misrepresentation of this complex chemistry is apparently coded into the box so it cannot be changed. Can you please see to this and any related errors regarding this family of complex, truly and critically 3D (not planar 2D) structures? As well, in the long term, features of boxes that are automatically generated should contain, in the markup, some feature or mechanism to allow a knowledable general editor (not specialising in the boxes) to address cases when the automatically filled/generated information is incorrect. Appreciate your leadership on that matter as well. Thank you. 2600:1008:B10D:1089:11E2:20DA:C2FD:6533 (talk) 19:27, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

P.S. I am sorry to see so much of your valuable, expert time to be taken up with administrative matters. Kudos and best wishes. 2600:1008:B10D:1089:11E2:20DA:C2FD:6533 (talk) 19:27, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
No worries. Thanks for catching the error and letting me know. This problem that you have encountered is a known limitation of the website that generates the 3D structures. It simply fails with large molecules. To remove the link to the incorrect 3D structure, the text "| Jmol=None" can be added to the infobox as I have done in this edit. Please feel to do this yourself the next time you encounter this issue. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:13, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much. The revision in this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rodney_Mullen&oldid=897959506
In general, the criteria for revision deletion is limited. I'm not sure this particular case warrants it, but for now I'll assume that the addition of one particular individual's name to the article was a form of harassment/cyberbullying and so I've gone ahead and hidden that edit. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:23, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

AM-1241

Hi Edgar181,
you recently changed the molar mass of AM-1241 from 503.333 ot 503.340. I've checked with multiple molar mass calculators and the correct average mass for C22H22IN3O3 appears to be 503.333. Could you please double check?
Cheers, Destruktor5000 (talk) 15:37, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

@Destruktor5000: The infobox automatically calculates the molar mass based on the chemical formula (the line "| C=22 | H=22 | I=1 | N=3 | O=3" in AM-1241). However, if the line "| molecular_weight = " is included, then the value entered there overrides the automatic calculation. I removed the "molecular_weight" line, which should result in no net change, but there was a small change in this case, as you noticed. There appears to be differences in values reported at various online sources: Pubchem reports 503.34, but ChemSpider reports 503.333, for example. The issue is that there is some disagreement regarding what exactly is the average mass for each element. So presumably the infobox is using one set of standard values for the average masses for elements, whereas some other sources or mass calculators use different values. If this is the case, then this is a bigger issue than this one article. Perhaps this could be brought up at Template talk:Infobox drug and there can be a discussion about what is the best data source Wikipedia can use for the average masses of elements. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:45, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
@Edgar181: Thanks a lot for clearing this up. I wasn't even aware, that the infobox could calculate the molecular weight automatically. Differing sets of standard values can indeed be a source of confusion. Will look into it further when I have the time. Thanks again,--Destruktor5000 (talk) 17:58, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC seeks to clarify whether WP:OUTING should include information on just the English Wikipedia or any Wikimedia project.
  • An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.
  • An RfC proposal to make the templates for discussion (TfD) process more like the requested moves (RM) process, i.e. "as a clearinghouse of template discussions", was closed as successful.

Technical news

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
  • Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.

I think that user page was self promotion, given the username. The draft article should be deleted altogether.211.26.200.179 (talk) 11:25, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

I agree there's an apparent conflict of interest, but I don't think it's exclusively promotional to the point of being speedy deletable. Please feel free to nominate it for deletion at WP:MFD, however, if you think that's the better option. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:29, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
I didn't include the word speedy in the post, though. The only exception is if draft articles get deleted, it's always the speedy kind. 211.26.200.179 (talk) 11:32, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Draft articles that do not qualify for speedy deletion are routinely deleted through MFD. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:34, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Can you do that please? I'm not confident. Thanks.211.26.200.179 (talk) 11:37, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Sure. Here it is: Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:HTV. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:53, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, but I may have forgot to raise this question: Isn't it clearly stated that Wikipedia isn't for soap boxing or promotion? That should, in my opinion, be enough to delete the draft right away. I don't see what's not promotional.211.26.200.179 (talk) 12:02, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
In my opinion, a neutrally worded article could be generated from this draft with a little unbiased editing. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:09, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
But the blocked user shouldn't edit it, even if he changes his username, right?211.26.200.179 (talk) 12:15, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Htvpk360 is softblocked so they are permitted to create an account with a different username. If they have a conflict of interest, the conflict of interest policy strongly discourages them from editing the article, but does not forbid it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:45, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Viridiflorol molecule

Hi there, I don't really know where to post this, so I figured out your talk page may be the best place.

I think there is a mistake in the Viridiflorol molecule that you sketched, and that illustrates the related Wikipedia articles. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viridiflorol.svg

The -OH group is not linked to the proper carbon I think, which I am quite sure after some searches on google https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Viridiflorol

Community consensus

If a user has been blocked for promotional username with related promo in userspace, it should always be deleted along with the page it's on. It should never be a draft because it usually won't be edited because the related user will be blocked and COI is an issue even if the account is renamed. That should be what community consensus suggests. Thanks.211.26.200.179 (talk) 12:57, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Can you point to a discussion where that consensus has been established? -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:59, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
I'm raising this issue here because such discussion has never existed or been started according to my knowledge.211.26.200.179 (talk) 13:01, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
In my opinion, it would not be a good idea to make a rule that such pages should always be deleted and should never be a draft. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:03, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
Why?211.26.200.179 (talk) 13:06, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
Sometimes those pages have useful content. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:07, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
But doing so would be self promotion, only by a different person.211.26.200.179 (talk) 13:09, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
Through the AFC process, draft articles are reviewed by experienced Wikipedia editors. If the article content is too promotional, the draft will be declined (or the reviewing editor may edit the article to make it acceptable). Declined and abandoned drafts are routinely deleted if they aren't edited within a certain time period. So the net result is that anything valuable to Wikipedia may be salvaged and anything that isn't valuable will be deleted. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:15, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
But what's so notable about these things?211.26.200.179 (talk) 08:58, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
That's an evaluation that is best done when/if the drafts are completed and submitted. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:51, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
Then why have such drafts in the past been deleted before submission?211.26.200.179 (talk) 12:13, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
Without a specific example, I can't say; but drafts that are not edited or submitted for six months are routinely deleted per WP:CSD#G13. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:29, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
The one you nominated on my behalf was deleted in a week!211.26.200.179 (talk) 12:49, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
There are different standards for different deletion processes. That article was not sufficiently promotional to be immediately deleted (WP:CSD#G11 requires the page to be "exclusively promotional") so declining speedy deletion and instead having discussion at MFD was the appropriate action. If it had been even less promotional, leaving it be until it was either submitted through AFC or it qualified for G13 would have been best. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:58, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi Ed. Just letting you know that I've modified the block you placed on this account to a hard block - I appreciate that you were probably trying to go easy on this user, but having viewed (and G11'd) their sandbox, I see no merit in allowing them the freedom to create a new account; based on their unblock request they clearly have no intention here beyond telling the world how great their product is. If you've any concerns with this modification, please feel free to drop me a note. All the best, Yunshui  07:43, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

Editing for my faculty

Hi Edgar,

I hope you're doing well. I recently received your response to my inquiry regarding editing and creating content on Wikipedia for my faculty members in my department. Since I do work for the department, I have an internal relationship with them. Our goal was to update and provide current information about our professors and their work. I'm hoping this doesn't violate any policies or mean that there could be a conflict of interest. Can you please let me know how I can create and edit the content on Wikipedia without it being removed? However, if the content is removed daily to verify the accurancy and validity of the content, I completely understand. What would be the steps I need to take to properly provide information to Wikipedia? I mainly want to add awards/honors, their backstory, and their current information (nothing too personal) on their wiki pages. Thank you very much!

Put simply, Wikipedia guidelines suggest that someone in your situation is strongly discouraged from editing articles about UCLA faculty. You can instead suggest changes to articles using their talk pages and let an uninvolved editor evaluate the suggestions. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:00, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

37.72.112.6 Editing Block

Hi Ed,

You recently put a block on the above IP address which is due to expire this evening. I would recommend you make this a permanent block from editing, I'm the Network Administrator for the school which has this public IP. We recently had a change of ISP which has resulted in a new public IP address, therefore some students have figured they can vandalise pages.

I'd rather save a number of different administrators the headache of undoing changes.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GandalfSpy (talkcontribs) 09:41, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

@GandalfSpy: In general, we don't block IP addresses permanently because (as you note) they can change. So I have placed a 6 month "soft block" on your school's IP address (anonymous editing is not permitted, but registered users can still edit while using the IP address). If vandalism from the IP returns after the block expires, a block of greater length can be applied. Thanks for letting me know about the issue. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:27, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

Jimbo

Many thanks for protecting the page. This particular socking vandal has been regularly at it since last month (i.e. [3]). Just in case you think a single day at a time may not be enough... Thanks again, —PaleoNeonate – 00:43, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, I know this particular vandal is persistent, but Jimbo prefers to have his user page unprotected as much as possible. That’s why I only protected for a couple of hours. The vandal will be back regardless, but there’s enough people watching the page to keep things under control. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 01:18, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

New User:

Hope all is well, I truly hope that I am using the correct section to query you since I am trying figure everything out on my own due to an overwhelming plethora of information on the Wikipedia site as a whole. First, I'd like to say thank you for being extremely thorough as an administrator, & overall productive citizen; I respect your passion for order, & balance. With that said, I simply need your help.

I am trying my best to help a recent Pennsylvania State University graduate, & young hip-hop/rap artist from Connecticut continue to build his image, & creditability within the music industry by consolidating some of his experiences as a "local celebrity" (if you will); to strengthen his online presence.

I've noticed that the page I worked on pertaining to the said musician, was deleted, & I'm hoping that you may be ever so gracious to share with me in a more detailed manner, as to- why […] & if possible, do not hesitate to share a suggestion/solution in reference to your rationale. I thought it may have been the amount of photos, or dimensions of the photos, but I do not understand where I went wrong, & would love to correct it immediately with your help!

Please do not hesitate to contact me at your earliest convenience to being a part of helping a young man's (fellow human being) dreams come to fruition. Thank you for your time, & energy.

From my family to yours- Peace, & Prosperity.

Hi Edgar,

Could you find a CAS number for Z-glutaconic acid (cis-glutaconic acid)? I have already this one of E-glutaconic acid = 628-48-8. Thanks --Titou (talk) 15:49, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

I added CAS numbers to the article for cis, trans, and uspecified isomers. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:09, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
okay thanks! I add those too on the french version. I have another question about Nitrendipine on which there is one stereocenter. In fact, it would explain the second CAS numbers (86052-02-0, in addition to 39562-70-4) that I found on ChemIDPlus and said (+/-)-isomer. So what is 39562-70-4? and could you find the CAS numbers of the two enantiomers? --Titou (talk) 15:52, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Here's what I found:
39562-70-4 (+/-)-nitrendipine
80890-07-9 (+)-(R)-nitrendipine
80873-62-7 (-)-(S)-nitrendipine
Chemical Abstracts lists 86052-02-0 as a "Deleted CAS Registry Number" at the record for (+/-)-nitrendipine

Administrators' newsletter – August 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

File:Sulcatone.svg

Hi Edgar181,

Thanks for patrolling and checking new chemical pages and adding images.

I saw you uploaded File:Sulcatone.svg, but it appears to be missing one carbon atom in the chain. What you uploaded here was 5-methyl-4-hexen-2-one. So perhaps it could be renamed, or you could replace it with a correct version. A correct structure appears to be on. Note our original IP author for the Sulcatone page appeared to have a wrong stdinchi. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:13, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

You're right. I have corrected the image now. Thanks for catching the error and letting me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 10:06, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Assuming you are asking me to start an article about PLX7486, I will take a look a later today and see what I can find. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:52, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Perhaps deletion is better as seems all information on structure of the drug has been stripped from internet Mfernflower (talk) 18:38, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
I don't think the information was stripped from the internet, it just hasn't made it there in the first place. For business reasons, details about drugs in the early stages of drug development are often considered proprietary and kept confidential for as long as possible. In regards to an article about PLX7486, I don't think it is yet sufficiently notable enough to warrant an article (and, as you have noted, there isn't much publicly known about to use to write an article). But since it is mentioned at Plexxikon, a redirect from PLX7486 to Plexxikon is good to have because someone looking for information about PLX7486 should be redirected to Plexxikon where it is mentioned. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:16, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Huge amount of chemical redirects?

If you have a minute, I have a question that’s been tugging at me for a little bit now... (Regarding the amount of chemical redirects I see in the RfD) James-the-Charizard (talk) 16:59, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

Please ask. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:03, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Why are there so many of these wrong redirects...? It’s baffling how many incorrect ones were made... Was there some problems with a bot or user...? James-the-Charizard (talk) 21:07, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
There are many thousands of molecular formula redirects and set index pages. Up until now, all were created manually by many different users over the years without any kind of review. User:Gyimhu is currently making a thorough effort to curate them all and to create missing ones, and he's sending the errors that he finds to RFD. So that's why you're seeing so many in recent days or weeks. These incorrect ones seem to be mostly the result of simple typos and actually represent only a very small percentage of the total. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:15, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
I agree. I checked 8375 of the 15457 carbon-containing formulas. ~50 redirects were bad: not much. The typical bad redirect is old: before 2010. The formula often changed in the article, which was not followed by the formula page. Gyimhu (talk) 22:55, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
I didn't know it was actually mostly correct... Whoops... James-the-Charizard (talk) 04:11, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Joann Store Locator Page

Please note that Jo-Ann_Stores doesn't have Jo-Ann Store locator which confirms the information mentioned on this sentence "Jo-Ann Stores are located in 49 states. The only state without a Jo-Ann Store is Hawaii, although Jo-Ann Stores will ship to the location via its online store."
