Whack a mole, on a roll

Wow. I've checked in on AIV a few times today and every time I've found an editor listed, s/he has already blocked by you. It looks like you've whacked around 50 today. That must be some kind of record! Keep up the great work. Toddst1 (talk) 21:32, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Cheers. A little help wouldn't go amiss. I seem to be handling UAA, RfPP and AIV more-or-less single-handedly. Still, there a few things admins do that are more satisfying than blocking vandals! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:35, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

File Undeletion request

Hi HJ Mitchell, I was wondering if you could please undelete File:Star Trek - Photon torpedoes.jpg. It was deleted by Orphaned file deletion bot because someone removed it from the article it was in. The file would be useful on List of weapons in Star Trek#Photon Torpedoes to help the reader better visualize the topic. Thank you --Alpha Quadrant (talk) 22:00, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Done. I'm surprised there wasn't any human review. It was tagged by a bot, then deleted by another. Anyway, it's back now. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:50, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Personal name + company name

Hi - just wondering... I thought consensus was that names like this were okay - propername+company name (and in this case division). I'm fine with the block, just wondering exactly which angle you were coming at it from. Thanks.  7  23:50, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Well I looked at their contributions and it seems they're promoting "organic motion" (whatever that is), hence the "OM" in their username. That, along with the links they were posting, seemed to me enough for a {{softerblock}}. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:55, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. I warned them about COI/SPAM - and figured that knowing they had this self disclosed conflict would allow for other users to see any issues with future edits (which we won't be able to see if her name is just Cecelia123)... but I get your point. Thanks.  7  00:00, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Unprotect template subpage, please?

Do you mind if I change Template:NRHP date for lists/dates to semiprotection? If you look at its history, you'll see that it's not been vandalised for months, and most edits have been by Sanfranman59, who isn't an admin. Nyttend (talk) 12:59, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

By the way, if you reply here, please leave me a talkback. Nyttend (talk) 13:00, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
By all means, please do. It wasn't a specific action targeted at that template, just a mass protection of a large number of templates, some of which don't need to be protected, so if you have any others, don't feel that you need to wait for my "approval" before unprotecting them. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:22, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Okay, thanks; I just really don't like undoing admin actions without agreement from the other admin. Nyttend (talk) 02:43, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Just found something

This code could solve all our problems, it's the logo div code, so it would replace the Wikipedia Logo but leave the flag where the logo should be on (probably Vector and Monobook only) so those that use Vector won't see a horridly misplaced logo and those that use Monobook won't get p*ssed off to see a malformed userpage.

Code:

<div id="p-logo"><a style="background-image: url(FLAG FULL URL HERE);" href="/wiki/England" title="HOVER TEXT"></a></div>

Moving to new username

Hi, I'm a autopatroller and reviewer on this account but I'm going to have a fresh start with a new username? Is it possible if I could get both autopatrolled and reviewer rights without having much edits?--Saki talk 15:34, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

I can do that. You'll have to make it clear that it's a WP:CLEANSTART to avoid accusations of socking. I'll also need you to make some kind of edit (preferably to the new account's userpage) with both accounts to confirm the connection. Saki, if you are doing this because of your problems at Wikinews, I suggest you not to. It will just make clearer that you are 1) Childish, and that 2) you haven't changed since you started socking there. This would be bad for you, in a few words. --Diego Grez (talk) 15:43, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Not my fault

Risker reverted my edit, only because she knows I don't know the very old history behind Wikipedia. Does this mean I am not allowed to restore an earlier statement not originally made by me? Earlier I modified the statement to say that "most of the articles". Originally it said "every article". This is IMO foolish. HeyMid (contributions) 16:49, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

You should discuss it with Risker, but, in general, there's no reason for you to be editing other peoples' (or bots') userpages. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:53, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
However, I did find out that sometimes, if I make false statements (which I will not continue to do from now on), other users may correct them. HeyMid (contributions) 16:58, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

  • I understand what you're doing and why, but you seem to be doing it on a scale that merits wider discussion and people have lost rollback privileges for less than using it to revert a revert of a redirect, so don't use it for that. My biggest issue, though, is that you're removing a lot of links that are perfectly valid. As a general rule, only links to deleted articles should be removed except from the target of the redirect. In most other cases, the redirect would be useful to the reader. Anyway, just slow down, stop and discuss (as you seem to be doing). You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Racism and ethnic discrimination in Israel. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. When in dispute with another editor you should first try to discuss controversial changes to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. Should that prove unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. If the edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. —  --- There was no consensus on "black hebrews" to be reinstated in that page.RS101 (talk) 01:31, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ, just an FYI there's an ANI thread on this user now, and you were mentioned regarding his revert of your template warning. Strange Passerby (talkcstatus) 03:42, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I was asked to change the redirect on Can't_Take_That_Away_from_Me to Can't_Take_That_Away_From_Me which appears sourced. As I didn't think editing through protection was a good idea, I removed the protection and redirected myself. If I've made an error in doing so, please feel free to reverse my actions. Regards Alexandr Dmitri (talk) 13:34, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I requested the above change because the redirect to JoJo (singer) wasn't the most appropriate page. After the change, I requested help re-protecting the redirect because of prior edit warring over redirects and upper/lowercase "from" in these article names:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can't_Take_That_Away_from_Me (lowercase f) and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can't_Take_That_Away_From_Me (uppercase F).
In the (lowercase f) history, HJ Mitchell was protecting against "Tag:redirect becoming article" - Lilbadboy312 was the culprit, and ActiveBanana erred in redirecting to the singer's article instead of to Can't Take That Away From Me (uppercase F)
In the (Uppercase F) history Lilbadboy312 persistently tries to redirect and force content - he seems very committed to the lowercase "from", and his edits were mostly reverted. After it was first protected, Lilbadboy312 requested on the redirect's Talk page to be permitted to edit it again. The history plus this particular request make it seem highly likely he'll continue recreating, so I thought re-protection was appropriate. --Lexein (talk) 17:07, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Warning classification

I just started using Huggle (as you know) and have found many cases of vandalism saying things such as "blank had sex with blank" -- do I warn the user with a vandalism or a personal attack warning? Thanks, WikiTome Talk 19:10, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

It's a matter of judgement really, but most of the time, just go with the default, it's usually some kid who thinks it's funny. If they name an editor or the subject of a WP article, then skip to a level 4 or 4im and consider asking an admin to delete the revision if it qualifies under WP:RD2. The joy of anti-vandalism tools

You're having all sorts of fun at the moment, aren't you? ☺ For what it's worth, we happen to be going through the articles that have already been reviewed, right now, marking them off so that there's a clear flag in their edit histories. So teething troubles of this nature aren't disastrous. (It's an unexpected benefit of doing this set of articles first.) But when this batch is finished, which it will be quite soon (within the hour by my calculations), we'll be heading off into the territory of articles that haven't been reviewed. Uncle G (talk) 19:24, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

  • Any chance you could get it a bot flag? It's flooding Igloo and, I imagine, Huggle, because, with the joys of artificial intelligence, they start going berserk when they see somebody blanking pages. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:27, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
    • Part of the reason for not giving it the flag was that we wanted these edits to show up on watchlists and so forth. We didn't want people discounting this as simply, say, some interwiki 'bot doing some minor change that could be ignored. I don't know enough about Igloo to provide you with any suggestions for how to tweak it, unfortunately. It must have ways for filtering out blankings such as {{subst:copyvio}} and so forth. Uncle G (talk) 19:37, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Change I've done

Hi, fellow. :)

So, I see you haven't found one change I've made to the Brazilian People article useful, I can understand why you thought so, since I've deleted an entire section. But, let me explain why I did it:

1-The section had the following "warnings" for a long time and no one did anything to solve the problem:

" This section relies largely or entirely upon a single source. Please help improve this article by introducing appropriate citations of additional sources. (June 2009)

This article or section appears to contradict itself. Please see its talk page for more information. (August 2010)
The neutrality of this section is disputed. Please see the discussion on the talk page. Please do not remove this message until the dispute is resolved. (August 2010)
This section may contain original research. Please improve it by verifying the claims made and adding references. Statements consisting only of original research may be removed. More details may be available on the talk page. (August 2010) "

2-The entire section had only one source. 3-The entire section was not neutral at all. Someone used one single source to introduce their own thoughts and original research at the article. And I could list more problems about it with enough time.

So, what do you think about it?--CEBR (talk) 19:50, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mitchell. I found you through the volunteer page, and have come to ask for your assistance. So I have recently significantly improved/expanded this article, but found that it also has been working against me. I found after working so much on the same subject, I don't realize sometimes how weirdly something is written etc. I would like to nominate the page for FA, so it needs to be perfect. I think I've done a good job, and I'd say the only issue is some MOS issues, and writing and sentencing (it's not so bad dw :)) So please, can you proof-read it from a "third party" point of view, and help refine its writing? Thanks so much Mitchell, and I hope you can help in the matter. Thanks! :D--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 21:35, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

I'll try to have a look over the next few days. I probably can't manage a full copy edit at the minute, but I can certainly give you an MoS audit, I just don't know when. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:41, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response. Hmmm, well I am patient. Can you do the whole article if I wait like a week?--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 21:46, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Might be more like 10 days to 2 weeks depending on how complicated real life gets, but if that works for you, I'll do my best. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:49, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Sure, I mean its hard to have the grammar and everything perfect when your the one who edited it, you know? So I don't mind waiting 2 full weeks, but if you don't mind can you guarantee me? Because I don't want to wait so long only to have had nothing done. Its not so bad, the article is fairly well written, don't worry. It needs, copy-editing, MoS, sentencing (where applicable) stuff like that. It needs this before I can nominate it for FA. Thanks Mitch.--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 21:54, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Help?

Hey, I noticed you were (semi-)involved in the reversion of the redirection of House episodes situation, and I was wondering if you could weigh in on a similar situation. Well, it's exactly the same but it involves CSI instead of House. See Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2010 September 17. Almost every CSI-related template up for deletion on there has had the same things done with it as the House templates, including the redirection of articles (and removing of backlinks) without establishing consensus. I don't have an opinion yet about the articles' notability, so in that respect I'm not taking sides. But shouldn't the articles be tagged with {{notable}} and consensus reached before they (and their templates and categories) are deleted? Should I revert the redirects and tag the resulting pages with {{notable}}? --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 22:53, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Could you take a look at... (potential DYK question)

...this for me, if you've got time? I encountered the article yesterday, when looking at CSDs. I declined the speedy, and did a wee bit of work on the article. Now I'm wondering if it would be a good candidate for a DYK? I don't know if I've expanded it enough, but maybe - hence my question. I guess the hook would be the Danny Glover play-within-a-play bit. Ta! TFOWR 11:38, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Nay, not yet- it's just 66 words sans the list, according to DYKcheck- nowhere near the 1500 char limit. sonia 11:45, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah, dammit. I was thinking about relative expansion, not absolute size. I'll keep at it, it's quite an interesting area (WP:BIAS, films, human rights...) Thanks, Sonia. TFOWR 11:51, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
...as I expect that few of the films will get articles of their own (yet), what if we expanded the film descriptions inside the filmography? We would create redirects accordingly. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 12:09, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
That sounds good. Only one film has an article (it's how I got the Danny Glover part), the other blue-link is to a list (with very little information...) For STiki, do you have to request user rights to it? If so, where do you request it? I seem to have lost the page where I requested Twinkle and Huggle lol! --5 albert square (talk) 21:35, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

No request process, but the tool, if you can call it that, is utter crap. No admin functions, no control over AIV reports, doesn't automatically revert multiple edits by the same user, etc. Download it and fire it up, and it'll work, but I've not seen a worse tool. Courcelles 21:42, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Seriously? No admin functions? None at all? I take it you can't do things like request page protection through it like you can with Huggle --5 albert square (talk) 21:50, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Nope, no RFPP, no tagging for speedy deletion (or deleting, if an admin). It is such a poor tool that it made an AIV report when I was using it. Never had to go to AIV and block on my own report before ;) Courcelles 21:53, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
That really is bad! At least with Twinkle and Huggle, when used correctly, they don't falsely report people lol. According to STiki's page though it is supposed to "compliment" Huggle, Twinkle and ClueBot --5 albert square (talk) 22:03, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
I've screwed around with it. It takes forever, because the kind of edits it digs up tend to be the more POV/inaccurate content that needs to be verified than blatant vandalism (which Huggle etc work for much better.) Not a great tool at all for its intended purpose, but it does highlight problematic edits. sonia 22:15, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice Sonia, don't think I'll be bothering with it. Especially as it seems that Twinkle and Huggle do a better job :) --5 albert square (talk) 22:34, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ, could you please delete these pages: User:Fridae'sDoom/Random Motto, User:Fridae'sDoom/StatusTemplate, User:Fridae'sDoom/Quimod.js, User:Fridae'sDoom/LiveClock.js, User:Fridae'sDoom/centijimbo, User:Fridae'sDoom/Busy and User:Fridae'sDoom/Procedures as they're either blank, redirects or no longer needed. Oops, sorry, missed this. I assume it got handled by a more alert admin? TFOWR 08:55, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks TFOWR. I'm actually in a cyber cafe in London right now. First internet I've had since I got on the train yesterday. I'm flying to SF tomorrow and I'll be there til Tuesday. Not sure how often I'll be able to log in over the weekend, so TPS assistance is appreciated! ;) Whisky drinker | HJ's sock (Mistake? let me know) 19:55, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
So why did you (temporarily?) log in to your main account (this account) then? Also, I believe that Diego Grez has (somewhat) stolen your edit notice, especially given the text "[...]please be nice, assume good faith (even if I did something completely stupid)[...]". Also, for how long time will you be away (again)? HeyMid (contributions) 21:09, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
I logged in as WD to test the internet connection at the cafe, then got an urge to check my watchlist! I should really merge the accounts' watchlists, but that'll have to wait for a better connection (I'm at LHR at the minute, I board the plane in an hour). Oh, and lots of people have stolen or adapted my editnotice for their talk pages. They're quite welcome to. It's noce that people find something I wrote useful! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:16, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Also, have you made sure this edit notice really works? HeyMid (contributions) 21:31, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Seems to work just fine. try editing RFPP's edit notice and you'll see it working. TFOWR 08:55, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Enjoy San Francisco HJ! :) —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne?9:32am 23:32, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Question about external Link

Would it be considered advertising if I opposed to a RfA because I truly believe they are not ready or have not shown that they understand the tools. Then I add a link to a wiki where they can test the tools. I am currently working on setting up a practice zone where regularly I will create a page and with content and add a CSD tag for something and see how they respond like if they would delete it or keep it and why. So I don't think that is advertising I think it is allowing users to get practice before a RfA Here. Joe Gazz84usertalkcontribsEditor Review 01:21, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Just in case, this account is yours, right? T. Canens (talk) 04:23, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

I was about to ask this. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 04:24, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm very, very sceptical (HJ, apologies if I'm wrong). I've blocked the account for (a) impersonation, and (b) the "bot" in its name. I'm normally an idiot, who frequently makes mistakes, and more clueful admins than me should feel free to unblock if I'm being an idiot here - that obviously includes HJ, but T. Canens you're included as well (all admins are included). As a bit of background: this isn't the first time some sort of impersonation account has popped up while HJ is travelling. TFOWR 09:04, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
You did the right thing for now TFOWR, if HJ claims the bot as his we can unblock--Lerdthenerd (talk) 09:07, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
TFOWR, you should trust your gut! That's nothing to do with me. As a rule, block anything that claims to be me unless I clearly state (from this account) that it belongs to me, like I do with Whisky drinker (talk · contribs). Besides, I don't have the technical knowledge to run a bot! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:12, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Glad to know I'm (occasionally) right ;-) It does occur to me that using usernames that aren't obviously related is a good strategy for alternate accounts. In this case, it just smelled fishy - too coincidental, the timing, and the name didn't make sense compared to "Whisky drinker". Anyway - how's San Francisco?! TFOWR 14:23, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Well I reblocked with NTP NEM so we don't get any dodgy unblock requests claiming to be me. SF is great. Weather is lovely. I spent most of the morning and early afternoon just wandering and getting all the essentials you can't take on the plane (because shaving foam is a really useful weapon for a terrorist!). I'm heading to the WMF office at 5 (local time, that's about 1am in the UK and midnight UTC). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:24, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to the States, HJ. Trying for a job or just checking out WMF HQ? - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:34, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

A bit of both, I suppose! ;) For now, though, I'm making screencasts for them (with a few others) which will hopefully attract and retain new editors, which we certainly need. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:42, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Latest impersonation was HJ Michelle. His "wife". :) Mr. R00t Talk 01:13, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
They have an office in SF? I should go up there some time. I'm not sure anyone's to happy with them after the whole PC thingy. Maybe I'll go stalk HJ by finding people who look techy buying shaving cream. Mr. R00t Talk 01:16, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
SF is the WMF HQ ;) Also HJ is it alright if I blank copyvios then tag with db-g12 if they are major violations or should I just abstain from content removal and add the tag above the content also User:FH Frankfurt since they are from FH Frankfurt, the website from which the content was plagiarised. Enjoy SF, regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne?11:21am 01:21, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
I thought that those offices were down in Florida. Or is that just the server? Mr. R00t Talk 01:30, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Nope, I think the main datacenter is in Tampa (although I don't think WMF owns it, rather leases rack space), and I think there's one in Amsterdam too. Ah, here's some of the centers: m:Wikimedia Servers#Hosting Allmightyduck  What did I do wrong? 02:29, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

For what it's worth ...

Hi, HJ.

Re your action at MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist#literateur.com (permanent link) last month:

"I've removed it from the blacklist, at least for the time being. I don't want to start a wheel war, but it appears the blacklisting may have been premature. While the site is probably not a reliable source (to be debated elsewhere), that's not a reason for keeping it on the blackist and there doesn't appear to have been any sort of spam on the level that would warrant balcklisting."

I've spent the last few weeks reflecting on your action and comments and I still think they were inappropriate. As a courtesy, I would have at least tried to communicate with you before reversing one of your administrative actions. There's hardly a rush to remove things from the blacklist, particularly in response to a site-owner. Furthermore, as a practical matter, I could have then also outlined the steps I took in investigating the problems with that domain before blacklisting the link in response to the request from another editor. I spent over an hour researching before blacklisting the domain. This included traceroutes on the IPs, the numerous ignored warnings, a review of the site itself, the owners' actions on other web sites and just about everything short of a checkuser on what were very clearly a set of sock/meat puppets. I don't think the blacklisting was "premature" and we have a whitelist to facilitate regular editors' requests to use specific pages from blacklisted domains. Multiple other editors looked at the history and agreed with my assessment.

You said you did not "want to start a wheel war" and yet you went on to take a step in that direction. I decided to not revert you; this project can handle spam better than it can the disruption of a wheel war.

When all was said and done, this whole incident felt like a discouraging experience in better faith being ascribed to an assertive, disingenuous site-owner than 3 regular editors here taking pains to try and do the right thing.
--A. B. (talkcontribs) 18:35, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Since the article still doesn't have any significant third-party sourcing, I am wondering if there is another reason you removed the PROD? Otherwise it'll have to go to AfD. Black Kite (t) (c) 21:18, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

  • Oh bloody hell, I'm dense - I didn't realise it had gone via REFUND. Feel free to ignore me, I'll just send it to AfD :) Black Kite (t) (c) 21:21, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
By all means. I just happened to see it pop up on my watchlist and was intrigued by the title so thought I might as well restore it while I was there! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:58, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Given past experience, I've softblocked this username.

If it is you, just go ahead and unblock. Courcelles 21:30, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Check the logs. I created the account (and confirmed it to get past the CAPTCHA). It's me. I'm with the WMF at the minute and I'm recording editing, but I need to do it without admin buttons/javascript etc. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:33, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
The user creation log didn't show anything, (and I did check) but the rights log proved the connection. I had already unblocked before seeing this. Wow, I'm bad today. Courcelles 21:35, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
My apologies to you both, I thought it was a repeat of the fake bot incident and reported it to UAA. January (Cassandra 73) talk 21:46, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
It's OK. I appreciate the vigilance. I'm in San Francisco making screencasts on "how to edit" for the WMF today, so I need an account with no admin buttons and no scripts etc so we can play around with making these casts and upload 'em to Commons. At your user page, it says "encyclopaedic". Shouldn't it say "encyclopedic"? HeyMid (contributions) 14:40, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)No, I think both are valid spellings. It wouldn't matter. Allmightyduck  What did I do wrong? 14:54, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
It's an WP:ENGVAR thing - "encyclopaedia" is a fairly common Commonwealth English spelling. I tend to use it more than the US English alternative. (However, I draw the line at spelling it with a ligature - "encyclopædia"). TFOWR 14:59, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
