I noticed that you have posted comments to the page Prehistoric art in a language other than English. When on the English-language Wikipedia, please always use English, no matter to whom you address your comments. This is so that comments may be comprehensible to the community at large. If the use of another language is unavoidable, please provide a translation of the comments. For more details, see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. "This refrigerator edit was a platypus non sequitur, purple"--now what is that supposed to mean? Do I need to break out the Enigma machine?? Drmies (talk) 16:27, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Hehe. The user had changed "the region around Matobo" to "the region apple Matobo" My edit summary when I reverted it made just as much sense, and seemed to be perfectly appropriate.

On a different but related subject, I seem to recall seeing something from you somewhere in which you advocated the ability to edit edit summaries. That's something I've wished for for a long time. On various occasions I've clicked "Save page" only to notice in horror an unwanted summary; I hurriedly try to Escape in hopes that I can stop it before it goes through, but I never can. However, the edit summary editing capability would pose a daunting technological problem. Presumably, one would be able to leave an edit summary describing edits to an edit summary. But then the user would have to be able to edit that edit summary. There would be infinite recursive levels of edit summaries, and Wikipedia would grind to a halt. (If I'm wrong about you expressing a desire for an edit summary editing capability, or in the extremely unlikely event I'm merely repeating what you said about the subject, I apologize.) MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 23:00, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

intercalated response: methinks this may be the eventual end for all cybernetic systems, including the internet, and human civilization, where there is intentionality driving it. The world is safe only for nonsentiency, yet sentiency is an inevitable byproduct of the laws of nature. God is laughing right now.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 18:56, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your input!

As soon as I saw that I had a message from you, I recognized your name, but I couldn't place it exactly. Where had I seen that name? Finally, I remembered that I'd seen it last night when I checked "What links here" for the article I'd just completed, John McLaughlin (artist). In the "new articles to write" section of your user page you say that it's "fun to see them go from red to blue" so I hope you were glad to see it. I had barely started a draft of the article in my userspace last June, without completing it. Then a few days ago the article showed up on my Watchlist. After making some edits to it, I eventually discovered that someone had copied it almost exactly from another site. I nominated it for speedy deletion as a copyright violation, then I decided to finally complete my version.

Oh, BTW, thanks for teaching me a new word. I was unfamiliar with intercalation. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:03, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh, that edit summary really cracked me up, thanks for that--and that was only one of three or four run-ins I had with you in edit histories the last few days. Now, you do indeed remember correctly--and look at what happened to me tonight. You hit "Save page" and you know it's wrong, and there ain't no stopping it. On a related note, I have made a talk page for my talk page, User talk:Drmies/talk, but really there's not so much action on my talk that it needs a talk. You never know, though. Such a meta talk is my old buddy CoM's idea (User talk:ChildofMidnight/talk), and I even made a meta meta talk page for him, User talk:ChildofMidnight/talk/talk, but as you can see that never really took off.

One thing you could to is become an administrator, or make me one, and then we can at least delete edit summaries with embarrassing typos. If you're holding a hammer, you can always find a nail! Take care, Drmies (talk) 05:12, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Your note cracked me up, so we're even. I've got a copy of Gödel, Escher, Bach which you mention on CoM's meta meta talk page. I was actually even thinking of Escher as I wrote about recursion. The problem with deleting an edit summary would be that, as it shows it's been deleted, people would always imagine it had been much worse than it actually was. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:21, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
And now this...left out a "u" so instead of a joke I have an illiteracism... Drmies (talk) 05:20, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, it's certainly not what I was expecting. I thought you had coined a word to describe a typo which made one appear both illiterate and racist!

Now, that reminds me of a Get Fuzzy comic strip:

Satchel: Check it out: my new rock is grevy!
Bucky: Excuse you?
Satchel: A-ha! Got your attention, didn't I? I made that word up myself! It means green and heavy!
That's my new thing, making up words. It's cool!
Bucky: You might even say it's annoypid.
MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:21, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

I just ran across that comic online, so I had to link to it here. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 11:11, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

DYK for ‎John McLaughlin (artist)

The DYK project (nominate) 16:03, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

MCallister

Did you misspell his name? [1]. Tony (talk) 09:09, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

I used the correct sort key. According to WP:MCSTJR (which I linked to in my edit summary): "For a surname which begins with Mc, the category sort key should always be typed as Mac with the remainder of the name in lowercase ... regardless of how the surname is actually spelled". MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:27, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

This was a fun article to write, and one of the reasons I like WP so much. I wish I had a picture, though. Are you traveling to the Pacific anytime soon? Drmies (talk) 14:40, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I had noticed when you nominated it for DYK, and it had grabbed my attention. Congrats on yet another DYK! Sorry, I neither have a photo nor am I planning a trip to Tuvalu. However, I have grown taro, which is a cousin of Pulaka, by planting taro corms purchased from an Asian grocery store.

I've added a Taxobox which I believe is correct although maybe incomplete. It's been a while since my last biology class, and I don't know exactly how the "Schott" fits in, but I'm sure some botanist will eventually step in and complete it. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:41, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

However, I see that Alocasia macrorrhizos, which Alocasia indica redirects to, has a Taxobox. Since your article is more about the culinary and cultural rather than scientific aspects of the plant, if you think that a Taxobox is unnecessary and/or distracting, please feel free to remove it. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:51, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Offensive term

Hi. No it was certainly not my intention. What does one call from China. A Chinese, a Chinese guy a Chinaman it makes no real difference. More offensive though is the way you think it appropriate to "warn" me and order me to change it when it was entirely innocent. I sometimes despair at people like yourself who go around playing God on here that's all. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:37, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

I did not "warn" you and I certainly did not order you to change it. I mentioned it to you while in the most generous way possible assuming good faith. I knew that you had collaborated with Drmies on various articles, so I assumed you were a decent person, and I was merely trying to spare you the embarrassment of having your unintentional but very offensive racial slur exposed to the world. I find it difficult to understand how my friendly note, which was intended only to help you, has resulted in such mean-spirited responses from you.
Here's my note:
Hi, you may not be aware of it, and I'm sure you didn't intend it as such, but the word "Chinaman", which you used at T:TDYK, is considered to be an offensive term. You may want to rephrase your note.
And your edit summary when you reverted it:
And you are, the police? Its pathetic how people like you think it appropriate to "warn" me.
MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 10:11, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

If it was in good faith then I thankyou. But often it seems some people intentionally go about and tell other editors what they should do or say (and seem to hang around forums just for this purpose of playing "God" and making people retract their comments). I assumed initially that you were one of those people, given the short amount of time you contacted me oafter posting it.. Sorry, but I initially read it as a scolding (when it wasn't intended to be offensive anyway). In my country if you call somebody from China a "chink" then that's offensive. What does one officially call a man from China I wonder...when Chinaman, meaning man from China is apparently political incorrect... Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:00, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your note. I assure you that I am not one of those people, and I invite you to peruse my edits and see for yourself that I have never attempted to tell anyone what they should say or do (other than to stop vandalizing). As for the short amount of time, I just happened to look at T:TDYK shortly after your post and I wanted to notify you as soon as possible in an attempt to prevent any more people from seeing it. It seemed to me that you didn't realize that the word was offensive, and my only intent was to protect you from embarrassment and the inevitable criticism which would have ensued if people had seen an offensive term for Chinese people used in an argument defending against charges of a Chinese-related POV. As for the correct term, I guess "Chinese person" or something along those lines. All I know for sure is what it shouldn't be. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:12, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Man you're quick. Why do I even look at my watchlist. Superp (talk) 21:05, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Hehe, thanks, I try. Keep up the good work yourself. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:10, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Thomas L. Vaultonburg

First, I must say I AM Thomas L. Vaultonburg. The Wiki page, which you edited about me has been proposed for deletion. If you have time I hope you can weigh in on it. I did not create this page and the edit I made was out of respect for a fellow poet who's name had been misspelled. I have no intentions of making major edits to this page. If it can be improved to comply with whatever objections have been raised I hope someone will. I will not because it's not my place. "Tvaulto (talk) 23:17, 27 May 2010 (UTC)" I hope that signature works. So much to learn.

My only contribution to the page was the addition of a DEFAULTSORT. I'm afraid I have no interest in researching the article sufficiently to offer an informed opinion at the AfD. Good luck (and, unfortunately, it appears that you'll need it). MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM

Regarding your sandbox for user warnings

Should I have a bot clean it out? OpenTheWindows, sir! 00:07, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

That's actually something which I've considered, but I don't think it's really necessary. The page doesn't get enough traffic to justify going to the trouble. Most users clean up after themselves, and whatever remains is usually taken care of soon enough by myself or someone else. Plus, it doesn't really matter if some warnings stick around for a while, except for the occasional warning/notification template which adds the user to a category. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 00:37, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Demi Moore edit

I am extremely unaware about that "edit" to that page, I guess some ip stealing hacker or someone in my family vandalized, besides I've never heard of her, thanks 24.97.242.75 (talk) 03:21, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

It probably wasn't a "hacker". Most likely, it was just someone who happened to have the same IP address before you did. Please see the notation at the bottom of your talk page, which says:
This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address.

Ścibor-Rylski

Hi, and many thanks for the copyedits. I planned to take a more hands-on approach myself, to actively fix the problematic parts of the article, but I'm pretty swamped at the moment and my mind is elsewhere. The main purpose of my notes comment was to let the inexperienced user know that this is a standard, so s/he will hopefully follow it in future edits (incidentally, I don't usually check article histories in the process - it takes time and a bigger attention span than I reserve for DYK). I just didn't realize the inconsistencies in format said "work in progress", so I should be the one apologizing. Dahn (talk) 18:45, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Not at all. It wasn't really a "work in progress" for me, as I hadn't intended on doing anything more with the article. I appreciate that you brought the inconsistencies up so that I could fix them, and also that you're trying to educate and nurture that inexperienced user. Thanks for your note. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, no... But then again... :) Dahn (talk) 07:54, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Hehe....

You did a great job of editing the article. Congratulations on your good work. I noticed on your user page that you're interested in at least some aspects of European military history, so I hope you enjoyed the challenge. And I hope you've now made the article DYK-ready. I'm sure the inexperienced user who created the page will appreciate all of your hard work, as well as your instruction and encouragement. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 08:31, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Many thanks, and, indeed, it was not an uninteresting experience. About it being DYK-ready: I really think the article should be double-checked by an English-speaking Polish editor, because there's still parts of it that I don't understand (including some of the refs, or bits of the text I only approximated). This unfortunately does seem to affect DYK eligibility, as it overlaps with the hooks. Unfortunately, the editor has apparently indicated s/he won't be around for a month or so... To be revisited. Dahn (talk) 14:53, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, that surely was an unexpected perk! I am touched by the attention. (Sorry for the delay, I was mostly inactive these past days.) Dahn (talk) 18:29, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. As I said, I felt that you deserved it. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:12, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Re: The Bandit Queen (1950 film) DYK nom

Thanks for all your help (said sincerely and in WP:AGF. I did try to get another editor to help me with the nom but it appeared soon after the request, that he did nothing and I had to do it all. I saved this article from a CSD and thought I had counted correctly everything. I just finished nominating a neologism for an AfD and will look at adding to the article tomorrow. There is not much written on it and I used my sources to the best of my limited ability. I have never built a film article before. I will look it when I am fresh. Thanks, ----moreno oso (talk) 07:11, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Ah, it's always good to see that someone has successfully rescued an article.

As you may already know, the standard DYK tool for determining article length is ProseSize. It's very easy to install and use, and it'll instantly show you the DYK-eligible article length. See User talk:Dr pda/prosesize.js for instructions. Good luck with this and future DYKs. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 07:58, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

No, I didn't know about that but thanks to you now do. Someone told me yesterday to use Word. Discounting all the refs, my count came in 1600 plus. I will install that tool and see what it says. ----moreno oso (talk) 11:10, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Nice tool. I see now that it does/did not count the infobox and and cast info section like you mentioned. This one is pretty tough on me as I've never seen the movie but now want. I've always love Zorro and several characters from it are in this movie. Plus Joaquin Murietta has been an interest to me since a friend claimed that he was related to this legendary person who is shrouded in mystery. BTW, my username is not exactly viewed by most anon IPs and even some regular users as a "savior type". About three weeks on my talkpage several anon IPs alerted me to the fact that there is a site that tracks Wikipedian editors who "Hall of Shame" deletion kings. Supposedly I'm either the crown prince or heir to the title of king. But, the site probably doesn't track all the little things I do or even the saves I make too. Lately I've been more involved in either saving articles, improving some to DYK length or creating my own. I was pretty proud of Sack tapping until it ran up against the buzzsaw of yesterday's DYK frontpage exposure. It's getting a withering attack. I'll see what I can do about TBQ but since am not awake and the Mundial futbol game now commences. ----moreno oso (talk) 11:29, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Don't know if you are around, but I just finished adding citations and a huge copyedit. I did the majority of the copyedit in my workspace area. I have to get some relief and will post on the DYK page in about 10 minutes. ----moreno oso (talk) 16:03, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
I verified your hooks, and suggested an additional ALT which I think is catchier. As for your Sack tapping article, I'm still amused whenever I think about an innocent comment you made which is inadvertently comical when considered in the context of that article. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:31, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I just noticed your reply here. Listen, as per my talkpage - I'm a little sensitive because I no longer have female bear, um, er, ah - fans. Yeah, that's the ticket. "Tap the sack" indeed. Wait, that could taken wrong too. Alt3 works for me. ----moreno oso (talk) 21:10, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Hate to trouble you with this, but is the DYK nom good to go? From the look of the nom, it does not appear that you have approved your recommended ALT and the nom for inclusion. Thanks in advance! ----moreno oso (talk) 06:00, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

One can't verify one's own hooks. Users moving hooks to the Prep area may assume that a hook is fine when it was suggested by someone who has just verified other hooks for the same article. But if you want to be absolutely certain that that hook gets used, you could ask some other uninvolved person to check it. In any case, I definitely verified your original hooks, so one way or another your article should make it. There are a lot of hooks, and, unfortunately, patience is required. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 06:23, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Understand all. Maybe I used the wrong words. But, I think I see what you mean. From my perspective, it looks like my agreement to your ALT is either unacknowledged or open-ended. I would never touch/move the DYKs and don't think I would approve any as long as I have noms on the page. I currently have three others besides this one. ----moreno oso (talk) 06:29, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
In case you haven't noticed yet, it's been moved into Queue 2, with my suggested hook, and no further verification required. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I did. Thanks for your aid.----moreno oso (talk) 21:47, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Appreciations...

I noticed THIS but thought I had to list it for the date it finally topped 5x. Thank you, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 08:26, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

No problem. There are so many rules and instructions, it's sometimes hard to remember them all. This one's at the top of the nominations page: "list new suggestions ... under the date the article was created or the expansion began". As a bonus, by being listed under the earlier date, your hook may be used sooner (depending, of course, on how soon the AfD closes). MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 08:39, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
It closed as grateful withdraw... and I owe a big thanks to Dr. Blofeld for his additional expansion. I may have turned faux meatloaf into steak... but he turned steak into prime rib. :) Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 20:21, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Hehe, if an article's about a person with "Mc" in their name, the odds are pretty good that I've edited it.

I was actually thinking about you yesterday, as I had a panir dish at my favorite hole-in-the-wall-back-of-the-grocery-store Indian restaurant. I also had my first chicken drumstick in many years! But don't worry, it was a veggie version, complete with "skin" and a wooden "bone". It was a little disconcerting eating it as it seemed so realistic, but it was delicious, with a spicy Indian sauce. Hmm, sounds delicious. But many things sound delicious right now. A wooden bone, though? And I've just been reading up on the Echidna and its strange "bone." Listen, while I have you, do you mind having a look at Albert Hauck and at The Church Review and Ecclesiastical Register? Maybe there is something fancy you can do there with categories, portals, defaultsorts, or whatever. Thanks in advance, and happy days to you! Drmies (talk) 04:17, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
BTW, the "bone" was merely a dowel. I don't think I could've handled it if they'd actually fashioned it to look like a real bone. I looked at those articles and didn't find anything "fancy" to do, but I did do a few plain things. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 08:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Still, a dowel is pretty cool. I've been thinking about it--must be labor-intensive. So they were delicious? I'd like to try some. As for the edits, thanks for the dashes. One of these days I need to learn them, but my brain is almost full. Thanks Mandarax! (PS, I'm reading another American classic--The Confidence-Man.) Drmies (talk) 16:36, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

User talk:166.137.136.69

Thanks for the note, but I've been around for a while. The IP in question is just the one that shows up when I edit from my iPhone, when I sometimes don't realize I'm not logged in. Thanks anyway. :-) Nightscream (talk) 06:37, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Ah, yes, I see that you've been around only about three weeks less than I have (and as of today I've been here 5 years, 5 months, and 5 days). Well, it's a first for me: I don't think I've ever issued a welcome to an admin before! I always like to welcome constructively-contributing users who apparently haven't been welcomed yet. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 07:01, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Monkish

Mandarax, only 180 more to go before we reach 1000 collaborations, if I counted correctly. Drmies (talk) 01:52, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll have to be very careful whenever I say anything. It sometimes has unforeseen consequences. 150 to go now. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:46, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Holy moly. You are a productive person. Thanks, BTW, for your help on Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant. The tenses are easily explained: translation from the source. The rest, that's just sloppiness on my part. Thanks again! Drmies (talk) 16:27, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Hello Mandarax--can I ask you a geeky question? I just got done translating and working on Hochland (magazine), and I can't figure out what's wrong with the image, which is fine in the German article. (I don't rightly understand, I might add, the relation between files on Commons and on Wikipedia.) Can you help? Thanks! Drmies (talk) 18:50, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
I've done very little with images. I believe you can only display images from Commons or the English Wiki. I upload images which are unambiguously public domain into Commons. I believe I've done this just once so far (as Xaradnam because someone else had the audacity to take the name Mandarax). For the rest (which also is not many), I throw 'em on the English Wiki with a Fair Use rationale. The Google translation of your desired image's license info seems contradictory: "unrestricted right to use, without any conditions for everyone" but "not legally possible transfer into the public domain". It's too bad that magazine issue is from 1934. If you had one from before 1923 you'd be home free. I know very little about image copyright issues, but if it's really not public domain, I guess you should copy it here with a Fair Use license. My new strategy will be to only write articles about artists who died more than 70 years ago, so everything's in the public domain. (Frederick Hammersley annoyingly only died last year.) MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:18, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Sknaht, Xaradnam. I might ask Moonriddengirl--this stuff is too complicated for me. I had a hell of a time getting the permissions for illustrations for an article I got published a while ago, though it was not a bad experience: I found that family members of old or deceased artists are often very tickled by the idea--see Alois Plum, and I still have to write up his father, Josef Plum, who made a wonderful series of saints' images right after World War II. Anyway, I'm digressing. Thanks again for your help, and as far as the detrimental effects of bacon are concerned, I'm also married, which adds to my life expectancy--or so my wife keeps reminding me. ;) Drmies (talk) 21:13, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Wow, a quintuple! Very impressive. And I'm glad to see that you were able to find a pre-1923 image. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 18:36, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
An update of an earlier, unrelated discussion: For the first time, I was able to successfully edit an edit summary. I clicked "Save page" then noticed a typo in my edit summary. I quickly corrected it, clicked "Save page" again, and the correct summary appeared! MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:07, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Wow, you did it! Maybe the server was slow, maybe your internet connection wasn't superfast--but even if all those factors were beneficial, that doesn't detract from what is going on here: you are clearly favored by God. Congratulations! Drmies (talk) 00:07, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I do believe you are correct. And now, getting back to the important subject which was the original topic of this thread....

Monkification is complete! We have now jointly edited exactly 1000 pages! But, as is so often the case, there are consequences. What this means is that, from now on, before editing any page, you must first check to see if you've previously edited the page. If so, you're free to further edit it. If not, you must determine if I've previously edited it. If not, you are authorized to begin editing it. But if I have, you must not edit that page. Instead, leave me a note describing the desired edits and I will perform them for you. I will, of course, do likewise. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 02:44, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Mandarax, you are a geek extraordinaire, and I salute you. But I have a different proposal, since I am in the habit of insufficiently scoping out article histories: we shoot for 10,000, and instead of keeping track we at random intervals use your software tool. How about that? Drmies (talk) 03:47, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
    • OK, I have just looked at your recent contributions, and I have some mixed feelings. First of all, you are a geek extraordinaire. Second, your determination is admirable; I wish you could do your cleanup at the Gulf. Third, you're probably crazy or lonely. Well, I'm still proud of you, and feel humbled. Drmies (talk) 03:52, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, I normally wouldn't've thought of doing it, but since you started it, I decided to finish. It was much easier and much less time-consuming than you might think. AWB automatically did everything, from gathering your contributions to pre-screening those pages for typos, fixing the typos, and filling in the edit summaries. While I was off doing other stuff elsewhere, AWB had edits all queued up for me, so I could periodically pop in for an instant just to verify and save a few edits, and get right back to my other activities. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 05:28, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Wow, I'd never looked at that machine before--very impressive, and you're putting it to good use. Doing anything exciting? While working on tzatziki, I came across an interesting recipe for eggplant, here, and we got some eggplants from my mother in law's garden, so that's my adventure--besides religious veneration in 19th century Germany: also very exciting! Drmies (talk) 15:04, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Nothing exciting. I've always got hundreds or thousands of pages ready for processing in AWB. What I'm doing currently is supplying sort keys for biographical pages which are erroneously sorted by first name due to a missing or incorrect sort key. There are also always lots of pages queued up which are in need of typo fixing. And another queue, which I haven't worked on for a while, is artist stubs, for which I add {{WikiProject Visual arts}} as well as fixing typos and sort keys and doing general fixes.

I once made baba ghanoush using a recipe I found somewhere, and it was terrible. But I doctored it up, turned it into Eggplant Pâté, and it's now one of my favorite dishes. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:41, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Can't find typos fixed in your recent 2010, July edit to WUWF

televison is bold red in compare edits in both versions. I am puzzled1archie99 (talk) 16:19, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

If you look more carefully, you'll see that I corrected "televison" to "television". MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 17:50, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

DYK for Frederick Hammersley

RlevseTalk 00:05, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

  • What a great article. Congratulations! Drmies (talk) 14:04, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! That's so good to hear. I always wonder if my articles are garbage, just waiting for an eventual rewrite. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 17:50, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey Mandarax--went through twelve pages of Google hits and couldn't find anything but that one article that's already mentioned. Thanks for your edits! Drmies (talk) 14:01, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Wow, it's very commendable that you waded through so many hits in search of sources/information. And all I did was a little gnomification.... MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 18:06, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. In the end, your gnomification was much more useful than my browsing. I may not get to 100 DYKs this week, but who knows what might come up. Later! Drmies (talk) 18:08, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Mandarax stick a fork in me i'm done...: Patel. Drmies (talk) 16:12, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Long hook

[Re: WT:Did you know#Hook too long]
Good call. I'm still confused -- it had a very different much hookier approved hook -- who changed that, and what right did they have to override consensus? I would think the approved hook is far better. Tx.--Epeefleche (talk) 03:54, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

The user who moved the hook probably didn't realize that you preferred the modified original. When there's some discussion, there may be a tendency to use the last hook, so it may make it clearer to create a new ALT instead of modifying the original. Since you seem to feel that your desired hook is a lot better, I imagine you can still get it substituted for what's there now. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 05:53, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I will ping the mover. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 06:43, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, thanks for your help. Apparently another editor saw fit to override consensus.--Epeefleche (talk) 20:13, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
In case you hadn't noticed, your preferred hook was added, removed, added again, and removed again. But at least a different hook for the article did make it. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:58, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Hahaha. Isn't that crazy? Just another example, to my mind, of DYK being an area at the outer limits of the galaxy where normal wiki concepts -- as in, consensus, and notifying the nom -- are ignored. No reasonable review process either, or easy way to fix that ignoreconsensus approach. (BTW, even with that, the article had over 20K hits that day).--Epeefleche (talk) 21:54, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for your help with Howard Martin and the DYK. That's all :) Malick78 (talk) 13:22, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. I'm glad that your persistence paid off. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:00, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank you again, my friend. I shouldn't be editing when I'm sleepy. I hope you're having a nice weekend--we're having a little birthday celebration tonight (I turned even older on Tuesday), with satay, salsa, and beer. Later! Drmies (talk) 18:54, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I would've fixed it myself, but there seemed a possibility you intended something else, as "bi" is a pretty bad typo for "not".[1] It never occurred to me that it was a simple case of a hand shifted one position left on the keyboard and someone too tired to type the "t".[2] Happy (belated) birthday! Have an extra (preferably very expensive) beer for me. I used to love satay, and I still sometimes make veggie satay with skewers of gluten or tofu and vegetables.[3] It's really all about that delicious sauce. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:58, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[4]
Mandarax, I'm proud of you for footnoting your talk page. There's a first time for everything (and also a last time). Many beers were brought and drunk, and the night's winner, as far as I'm concerned, was Duchesse de Bourgogne (beer)--I'm drinking the last of 'em right now. Delicious! I hope you had a good weekend too.

As for the typo, that explanation has a history--a virtual friend of mine once had a boss, and while typing her bosses name her right hand had accidentally shifted, giving her a new internet nick. I think of that every time I make this typo, which is quite often. Cheers! Drmies (talk) 21:37, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

The little bumps on my "F" and "J" are almost all worn down, so it happens to me too (it happened as I was typing this!), but I think I've always managed to spot it and correct it before saving. As usual, I'm envious of your beer exploits. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 22:31, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
  1. ^ Hehe, I'm reminded of an episode of Cheers. Nick tries to woo Diane, who spurns her. He then turns his attention back to Loretta.
Nick: You're the only woman on Earth for me.
Loretta: How come the cake says "Nick and Diane"?
    Nick: 'xcuse me?
Loretta: How come the cake says "Nick and Diane"?
Nick: You know what a lousy speller I am.
Loretta: Oh, right.... But wait, that's pretty bad.
  2. ^ Speaking of alliteration, I would've said "satay, salsa, and suds".
  3. ^ Satay recipe
  4. ^ Footnotes on my talk page? I guess there really is a first time for everything.
