Wikipedia:Template messages/Redirect pages

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Shortcut:

This is a list of specialised templates which can be used to categorise redirect pages.

It is sometimes considered helpful to put redirects into the same categories as their targets, allowing the names of both the redirect and the target to appear in the category; for details; see Wikipedia:Categorizing redirects. For pages which should ultimately be handled by a full article, add both {{R with possibilities}} and one or more stub sorting templates to draw attention to the needed article.

Note that these templates can and should be used together. For example, "Architechts" uses both {{R from misspelling}} and {{R from plural}}.

Most of the categories populated by redirect category templates listed below are hidden categories. Hidden categories cannot be seen by viewers who are not logged in, nor by editors who have not set their preferences to view hidden categories. To ensure the visibility of hidden categories, editors have to check the box "Show hidden categories" in the "Advanced options" section on their Preferences page ("Appearance" tab).

A[edit]

What to type What it makes
{{R from airport code}}
category links talk edit
{{R from album}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from an album to a related topic such as the recording artist.
{{R from alternative character}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a title for an alternative version of the comic book character detailed in the target article.
    • In accordance with the Manual of Style (comics) guidelines, when the target article becomes too big, this redirect may be replaced with an article carved out of the target page after discussion on the target talk page.
    • Do not replace these redirected links with a link directly to the target page. For more information follow the category link.
{{R from alternative language}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from an alternative language – a page name in one language to a translation into another language. It leads to the title in accordance with the naming conventions for titles in other languages and can help writing. However, do not replace these redirected links with a piped link unless the page is updated for another reason. For more information, follow the redirect category (rcat) template link above.
{{R from alternative name}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a title that is another name, a pseudonym, a nickname, or a synonym of the target or of an associated name. It leads to the title in accordance with the naming conventions for common names and can help writing. It is not necessary to replace these redirected links with a piped link. For more information, see the category.
{{R from alternative spelling}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a title with a different spelling. Pages that use this link may be updated to link directly to the target page. It is not necessary to replace these redirected links with a piped link. For more information, follow the category link.
{{R from ambiguous page}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from an ambiguous page title to a disambiguation page. These redirects are pointed to by links that should always be disambiguated. Therefore, this template should never appear on a page that has "(disambiguation)" in its title. Use {{R to disambiguation page}} instead.
{{R to anchor}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a topic that does not have its own page to an anchored part of a page on the subject. The {{anchor}} (or <span id=...></span> tags or id= attribute) might be installed above a paragraph within a section or within a table. Also, the anchor might be an old section header that has been changed that is anchored within or near the new header to prevent link breakages, both internal links and those from sister projects and the Internet.

{{R from antonym}}
category links talk edit
{{R from ASCII}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a title in basic ASCII to the formal article title, with differences that are not diacritical marks (accents, umlauts, etc.).

{{R for convenience}}
category links talk edit

That is, this is a redirect from a title that is another name, a pseudonym, a nickname, or a synonym as is used colloquially, but is not currently an officially accepted term, though it may have been in the past. It leads to the title in accordance with the naming conventions for common names and can help writing. {{R to disambiguation page}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect to a disambiguation page. This redirect is intended for use in links from other articles that need to refer to the disambiguation page, rather than be disambiguated. Therefore, this template should only appear on a redirect page that has "(disambiguation)" in its title. For more information, see the category link.
{{R from incomplete disambiguation}}

{{R from unnecessary disambiguation}}
category links talk edit
{{R from domain name}}

{{R from duplicated article}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a page on the same or very similar subject matter that was kept as a redirect in order to preserve this page's edit history after the content was merged. Please do not delete this page or remove this tag (unless the need to recreate this article is demonstrated).

What to type What it makes
{{ER to list entry}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a television related title for an episode to a list of episodes, a type of article which is a collection of brief descriptions and covers the subject more comprehensively. {{R from eponym}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from an eponym.
{{R from EXIF}}
category links talk edit
  • This is a redirect from a wikilink created from JPEG Exchangeable image file format (Exif) information (i.e. the "metadata" section on some image description pages) to a more detailed description of the Exif wikilink. Since MediaWiki offers only very limited control over the target of these camera-generated links, redirects like this are created to make them useful.
    • WARNING: It might appear that no pages link to this redirect. This is because the Exif links don't show up in these listings. This redirect is most probably not orphaned!
{{FictR to list entry}}
category links talk edit

This is a redirect from a fictional element (such as settings or objects) to a list of such elements, a type of article which is a collection of brief descriptions and covers the subject more comprehensively. For more information, follow the category link.
{{R from highway}}

    • When the target page becomes too large, this redirect may be replaced with an article carved out of the target page. See also Template:R ME to section, and when appropriate, use both together.

For more information, see the category.
