== What was the name of that movie? ==

In the 1960s or late 1950s a science fiction movie was released featuring a mission to the Moon to defeat an enemy force which was operating a base there. The enemy were flying a spacecraft of the flying saucer type from which a crimson-coloured sphere emerged at times. The defending force landed upright rockets from which they deployed moon-buggies to attack the enemy base/saucer. On the journey to the Moon one of their crew turned saboteur. == Future article: Tribute song ==

I am currently researching an article on original [[Song|songs]] that pay tribute to pre-existing musical artists, e.g. "[[Raptori]] - [[Debi Gibson]]" (Deborah Gibson). The proposed Tribute song entry will be substantially different from the existing [[Cover version]] term, as the latter refers to a pre-existing song. Which [[Wikipedia:WikiProject|WikiProject]](s) is/are in the best position to coordinate research for the proposed Tribute song article? - [[User:B.C.Schmerker|B.C.Schmerker]] 14:53, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

:By tribute, do you mean just mentioning someone's name (ie: the brief mention of "So you're Brad Pitt" in that country song), or an actual tribute to a person(s) as in the Commodores' Nightshift? -- <small>[[User_talk:Kainaw|(¿ʇɐɥʍ)]]</small> [[User:Kainaw|ʍɐuıɐʞ]] 15:03, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

:Good luck but lists like this are frowned upon here [[Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_songs_containing_overt_references_to_real_musicians]] is a deletion discussion of something similar and http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-songs-containing-overt-references-to-real-musicians is what it looked like. ''<small><font color="#000000">[[User:MeltBanana|meltBanana]]</font></small>'' 21:19, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

::What I pictured approaches "Commodores - Nightshift," as another typical case; "John Wesley Harding - When the Beatles Hit America," "Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much," "Pixies - Make Believe," &c. all fall outside the scope of this proposal. As I understand things, "Make Believe" was intended for the girlfriend of one of the Pixies bandmembers (most likely Lovering) at the time of composition; but obsession does NOT equal admiration. The concept does not necessarily require mention of an example composition in the proposed article. - [[User:B.C.Schmerker|B.C.Schmerker]] 01:39, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

BTW, see [[Debbie Gibson]] for our article on her. [[User:StuRat|StuRat]] 13:26, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

:Noted. I've a beta rewrite in the works and am on the verge of deleting reference to the aforementioned [[Pixies]] song therefrom--"Make Believe" is, as a possible tribute song, doubtful, and I question the relevance thereof to the rewrite for that reason. "Elton John - Candle in the Wind" probably qualifies for the proposed Tribute song article, having been written as an epitaph to the late Norma Jean Dougherty, a.k.a. Marilyn Monroe; pre-existing does not necessarily mean living. - [[User:B.C.Schmerker|B.C.Schmerker]] 15:34, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

:In order to link something within Wikipedia, just enclose the words in double brackets. They look like this: <nowiki>[[ ]]</nowiki>. On the QWERTY keyboard, the brackets are over the ' key. The spelling within the brackets must be the same as the page title that you are linking to. If you'd like to use a different word or phrase for a link then you can pipe the link (see: [[WP:PIPE]]) which will look like this: <nowiki>[[Wikipedia|online encyclopedia]]</nowiki> and that will look like [[Wikipedia|online encyclopedia]]. Smoke On The Water

I know the entire band Deep Purple obviously wrote the song, but does anybody happen to know which member of the band actually came up with the ultimately famous guitar riff in the beginning?Jk31213 03:11, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like it's Ritchie_Blackmore. See also Smoke on the Water. Friday (talk) 07:23, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely Ritchie. Various guitar magazine interviews can confirm. Someoneinmyheadbutit'snotme 18:05, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Song I Heard The Other Day

I heard a song the other day that I cannot for the life of me remember either the tune or the lyrics (in any meaningful way). It was like an indie/rock style and was about the first time with a new woman, and how the second time was better for her (or something like this). Any ideas anyone? Not much to go on I know. I've been racking my brain, i'm pretty sure it is a new song. ny156uk 10:47, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It wouldn't be Hinder's "Better Than Me", would it? Probably not, but you deserve one answer in nine days :/ --zenohockey 07:43, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brit singer famous in the former Soviet Union

I recall that in the late 80s there was a female singer from the UK who was supposedly huge in what was then the USSR, but practically unknown at home, despite going on various high-profile UK shows (Wogan and the like) to try to promote herself. Anyone know who she was, and indeed whether she was really big in Russia or whether that was just hyperbole? (Oh, and on a similar Brits-famous-abroad tip, I think Wikipedia should have an article on Kathy Flower, if anyone knows enough about her. Being a Brit myself, I haven't a clue.) -88.109.42.17 12:21, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

American movie from the early 90s

There is a movie I saw from the early 90s in theater at the time and I can't remember the name for the life of me. In the movie, the characters become immortal by drinking some potion. It is set in contemporary times and from what I remember, the end is two of the women who drank the potion, dying after the funeral of a man that fell to his death rather than drink the potion. The two women fell apart, or something like that. Any ideas what the name of this film is? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.87.80.103 (talkcontribs)

Criterion Collection April newsletter

In The Criterion Collection's April newsletter, a vague reference is made to a movie they're soon to release. An image shows a pelican saying, "This fall, Mackie's back in town." I know it's referencing Mack the Knife, but does anybody know what movie it's referring to? Is it a movie version of The Threepenny Opera? If so, which one could it be? And if not, then what is it? UK Kids TV Show - Finder

I remember a TV show that I'm certain was called Finder but I can never seem to find anyone else who remembers it.

A young boy had been transported to an alternaive world, behind a huge purple glowing barrier on top of an earth ridge, the other side of which was Earth, and his home.

In each episode he was the Finder in a gameshow. The show had three contestants, and each episode, one would be chosen at random to have an object dear to them found by him.

He would be transported back to his home and had to find the object.

He could have stayed there, but had to keep returning because one of the contestants was his Sister, and she couldn't return until her object had been found. Mid to late 80s at a guess, unless I was watching repeats.Russ 20:00, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is an Australian series called The Finder, it was made in 1992 and was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK early 1993. The boy, Patrick, was played by Jeremy Schwerdt. -88.109.61.236 22:42, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's the one. With your help of the actor, I even followed through imdb to find an episode guide (http://www.australiantelevision.net/finder_eps.html). Cheers!
This might not be it, but see The Finder. -- Jreferee (Talk) 23:53, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like we even have an article on The Finder. Strangely enough, I seem to remember it being broadcast in Australia under its alternative name (Finders Keepers), which is what I searched for first. Incidentally, you're not quite 100% right on the plot, but given that you're remembering something you saw back in the early 90s that probably not unexpected. Something in martial arts films...

I saw something in a martial arts film that got me wondering something. The main hero stopped a woman and sort of broke her fingers or something. And near the end, when another woman was trying to flee hanging to the ledge of a flying helicopter, the main hero jumped off the roof and strikes her with his knees, knocking her off. So I'm wondering, can men do martial arts to women also in films?

Unless I'm misunderstanding the question, and I think I am, the films that you have seen would answer your question in the affirmative by proof of example. Dismas|(talk) 05:39, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I find a list of camera angles and actions?

I kow some camera angles and actions. Like the normal camera angle, the POV angle, and the upside-down angle. And some actions like the camera pan, the camera spiral, and the eye zoom, which is when the camera basically zooms into a person's eye. Now, can you tell me where I can find a place of all camera angles and actions?

Why the heck was the French Open men's final never aired?!

They never showed the French Open men's final on ESPN or the Tennis Channel? What's up with that?--24.153.177.210 19:43, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From what I heard it was an argument over licensing rights that caused the game not to be shown in most areas. PeteShanosky 02:38, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I can't speak for those channels, but Australian TV channels have a similar indifference to the French Open. The other 3 Grand Slam events (Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon) are all broadcast live here, to huge viewer audiences, but for some reason the French Open just doesn't attract much interest here. Maybe it has something to do with the clay courts. Or maybe it's because Australia has done very poorly there of recent years (last Men's singles winner & runner-up - 1979; last Women's singles winner - 1973, last runner-up - 1979; last Men's doubles winner - 2000) - but we did figure in the Women's doubles winners both in 2007 and 2006 (Molik and Stosur), a fact which seems to have escaped the attention of the Australian media except for some fine print buried in the sports pages of newspapers. Or maybe it's because the tournament, officially known as "Tournoi de Roland Garros", is named after a person who most people would be surprised to learn had nothing whatsoever to do with tennis. -- JackofOz 02:56, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is mainly to do with the fact that clay court tennis and much more longer and tedious than most other tournaments. The fact that it is dominated by Europeans and Australians, Americans and Brits usually make early exits.

I watched it on one of the networks where I live (FL, US). I think it was CBS that aired it. Recury 17:15, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Potter versions

I've resolved that if I ever read Harry Potter it won't be the condescendingly Americanized editions. My friend Amy, an itinerant book-dealer, offers to pick up The Philosopher's Stone on her next visit to Vancouver, but suggested that I try to make sure that the text as published in Canada is the original. Anyone know for sure? —Tamfang 06:05, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure that the text is different in the American editions? Our article on the subject makes no mention of this, although it does state that the title of the first book was changed to The Sorcerer's Stone for the American market. Personally I would be very surprised (and a little shocked) if Rowling had agreed to the text being changed. Where did you hear this? BTW, you could always order a copy from Amazon in the UK [2] if you wanted to be sure of getting the original edition. --Richardrj talk email 07:28, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, they mention the Americanization of the US version in our article on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone; apparently, they changed spellings and even some words. If you want to be sure it's the original version, look for the Bloomsbury UK editions. Iachimo 10:11, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know, the text was only altered in the first and sixth books and these alterations (aside from spelling) were very minor.
Well, if mum was indeed changed to mom throughout, as the article suggests, I think that is unjustified. --Richardrj talk email 11:49, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Changes are to things like 'sweater' instead of 'jumper', and 'cookie' instead of 'biscuit'. And I suppose the US words for 'crisp' and 'fanny', if it should come to that. The Canadian version is the same as the UK version. The US version is also illustrated (one illustration per chapter, which gives the US books a different page count). Anchoress 12:10, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As evidence that, as Anchoress says, quite a lot of changes were made to the books for the American market (more in the earlier books than the later books, leading to confusion for some American readers. This was presumably because she had more clout when the later books were released, although she diplomatically claims to be happy about the changes. If that were really so, why would she retain 'sherbet lemon' in the later books, when it gets changed to 'lemon drop' in the earlier books? But I digress...) I give you the Harry Potter Lexicon's guide to the changes. Enjoy! Skittle 21:21, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I never understood why the American versions are illustrated, and was horrified when I found out. Is this common practice in American books for older children and teenagers? Skittle 21:23, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thankfully not...but Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is renowned for its illustrations, you know. --zenohockey 08:01, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still fuming about the spoon-feeding of American audiences in one of the films, where the school toilets are referred to as the 'bathroom'. As if that would ever be said in the UK! Did the film producers really think that American audiences couldn't work out what 'toilets' referred to? Why did JK let that happen? Grrrr. 86.133.242.185 14:57, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A phrase like "he's was in the toilet" would have a very different meaning in the US, that he had been plunged into the water in the toilet bowl as in a swirlie. I don't find it condescending to offer books in the local dialect, not do I find it offensive to include illustrations. I would however, find it annoying if the plot were actually changed (say changing the chess game to checkers). Also, the UK version should be made available in US book stores, with both versions clearly labeled, to give people a choice. StuRat 15:29, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CCCP t-shirts

I remember them well in the 80s. They were an example of radical chic, capitalising on the strong imagery of Soviet art. Presumably the wearers of such T-shirts were either oblivious to Uncle Joe's less pleasant activities, or of the opinion that it didn't matter as long as a strong fashion statement was being made. --Richardrj talk email 07:22, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kill switch for guitar

As a guitar disciple of Buckethead and Tom Morello, I have recently become interested in adding a kill switch to my guitar, in the style of the former's "big red button". How could I go about doing this or having this done? Someoneinmyheadbutit'snotme 01:01, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you want a button you can press to stop sending a signal to amp. Then, press it to send the signal again. No biggie if you are willing to cut up your guitar. Of course, I'm also assuming it is an electric guitar. You want a push-button switch. Radio shack has all kinds of them. Single pole will work fine. You will drill a hole in the guitar and mount the button where you want it. Then, cut one of the signal wires. It doesn't make a huge difference which one. Extend and connect the wire going through the switch. Connect one of the cut wire to one lead of the switch. Connect the other wire to the other lead of the switch. Solder them in place (or you'll get terrible sound). Presto - a kill switch. Hopefully the switch is good enough that it won't make the guitar sound funny. Youth in Asia 02:08, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but the way his switch works is that the signal is cut off when it is pressed and returns when it is released. Will this method work that way? Someoneinmyheadbutit'snotme 14:47, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but only with a specific switch. You want a normally-closed SPST momentary switch, such as this one. Normally-closed means the default state of the switch is to connect the two leads (leaving your signal wire intact), SPST is the default connect/disconnect one wire switch, and momentary means it'll return to default state when released (as opposed to a toggle). — Lomn 15:10, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Da Ali G Show

Can anyone give me some names of the songs played in Da Ali G Show in the interludes and during the show? i dont know if you consider the songs rap or urban but they are played before and after the ali g segments

According to Wikipedia, Funkyzeit mit Bruno's title song is Crank It Up, by Scooter, from the album Our Happy Hardcore. Borat's theme song is "the rock-rendition" of Korobeiniki. The article on Ali G doesn't specify what is used as theme song for the Ali G segments in Da Ali G Show. 14:45, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
From what I remember, the music they used during the interludes was more garage and drum and bass. No idea what songs they were, but that could be a place to start. Recury 16:42, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

how do i work out percentages

Can u please give Me a way of working out percentages

I don't have enough context to answer this question. Would the article on percentage be of use to you? Friday (talk) 16:29, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Imagine you want to know what percent of cats are brown, and you know how many cats there are in total, and how many of them are brown. You divide the number of brown cats by the total number of cats, then you multiply the whole answer by 100. If you replace the phrase 'brown cats' and the word 'cats' with whatever the things are you are working with, it should work. If this doesn't answer your question, try explaining more precisely what you mean. :-) Skittle 21:05, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Even though there's no percentage in it for me, and this really should have been posted to the Math Ref Desk, I will help anyway. The trickiest part for percentages is "adding" and "subtracting" them. If a price goes up 10%, then up an additional 10% from the new price, that isn't a 20% increase, but a 21% increase. You do this type of problem by converting to decimal and adding one, multiplying instead of adding, then subtracting one and converting back to percentages. So, 10% "+" 10% becomes 1.10 × 1.10 = 1.21 = 21%. The same is true of subtraction: 10% "-" 10% becomes 1.10 × 0.90 = 0.99 = -1%. This means, if you increase a price by 10%, then decrease the price by 10% of the new price, the final price is 1% less than the starting price.

Note that this method only applies to changing bases. If you wanted to increase the price by 10% then by an additional 10% of the original price, you would just add normally to get 20%. And, if you wanted to increase the price by 10% then decrease it by 10% of the original price, then you would just subtract normally to get 0%.

When dealing with interest rates you normally do have a changing base to account for "interest on the interest". You also must often deal with multiple years. So, a 10% interest rate for 7 years becomes 1.10 × 1.10 × 1.10 × 1.10 × 1.10 × 1.10 × 1.10 = 1.107 = 1.9487171 or 94.9% interest. StuRat 15:12, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A television network dedicated to only telenovelas

Since MyNetworkTV is not going to have anymore telenovelas, why not come up with a whole new television network dedicated to English-language telenovelas that will be named The Telenovela Channel?

Name of Two Movies

I hope there are some movie addicts on line tonight.

(1)First, I am looking for the title of a movie about identical-twin brothers, both of whom were gynaecologists. One committed murder and the trial hinged on how to tell the twins apart. If you know the title, do you also know who played the twins and what the outcome of the trial was?

(2)This is an older movie about a business executive who is being stalked. No one really believes that he has not encouraged the stalker and his only real supporter is his secretary. The climax of the movie has this secretary telling the executive's lawyer that the real reason she knows that the executive has not had an affair with the stalker is that he is in love with her (the sceretary). How does she know he is in love with her? Why, he has been writing her "coded messages' for years. The lawyer asks to be shown one of these messages, and she shows him a perfectly ordinary note from a boss to a secretary. The title of the movie, and the names of actors playing the lead roles, would be greatly appreciated. Bielle 23:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

#1 would be Dead Ringers, with Jeremy Irons as the twins. I have no idea how it ends. --Anonymous, June 14, 00:39 (UTC).
Thank you, --Anonymous. That's a good start. Anyone else know how the Dead Ringers ends, or the answer to #2? Bielle 02:01, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's been a long time since I've seen Dead Ringers, but I don't think there was any murder or trial. One of the twins died from drugs and debauchery, and I think the other one killed himself (maybe). --Joelmills 03:24, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Argh. I've seen something very like #2, though it may be an episode of a TV detective show. Further details: When the secretary was exposed as the real stalker, there was some talk about sex addiction as a disorder. In the end, one of the "coded messages" was a request to arrange for protection for the boss's wife who has received threats. Any help? —Tamfang 22:17, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A check on Dead Ringers lead me to the story of the twins on whose life story the movie was very loosely based. As they died of "barbituate withdrawal" perhaps I am mis-remembering a trial. Thanks, Joelmills
Your story line is similar, Tamfang. I don't remember the last coded message that way. What I remember best was the look on the executive's face as he realized he had two serious whackos after him. Thanks you all for your help. Bielle 00:16, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any other information that might help? Year? Color/B&W? Country of origin?. Language? TV Show/movie/TV movie? Also, try the power search at the IMDb and fill in everything you know. David Steinberg's pinky

I just saw David Steinberg on a recent episode of The Daily Show. During the show, his pinky finger of his left hand looked like it bent the wrong way. Don't know about him. When my grandmother held her hands out flat, the last joint of the pinkies turned visibly toward the ring finger; but they functioned normally. She shared this trait with at least two other female relatives. —Tamfang 22:05, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no sound guitar string for a stage play

Are there guitar strings, with no actual sound, to use on a prop guitar for a stage play? Been searching for an hour . thanks.

Not that I know of. How about just removing the strings? Or, an electric guitar even with strings will be quiet enough that the little sound it makes likely does not matter. If it must be acoustic and you need the appearance of strings, try loosening them a lot and filling the sound hole with something soft, and it won't be very loud. Friday (talk) 16:20, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The act of having a piece of material and stretching it will make it produce sound by plucking or striking it. It's just the physics of it. What Friday suggests will probably be the best you can do. Dismas|(talk) 16:36, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If the strings can't vibrate freely, that will also greatly damp the sound. See if you can wedge something soft (like, say, cotton balls) between the strings and the neck. Naturally, you'll want something less visible than cotton balls, but there should be something sitting around the props department. — Lomn 18:05, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's good. It's possible the same effect could be achieved by having the guitar-wielder mute the strings with his hand, too. If he practiced a bit maybe he could have a (pretty much) silent technique that still looked realistic. Friday (talk) 00:03, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doctor Who numbers

Okay, am I completely making this up, or does the future portrayed in Doctor Who include additional numbers?

Like, as a running joke throughout the series, whenever in the future is visited, and a number is recited it will include various common nouns recited as if they were numbers, (like, a code being recited as "4-2-9-hat-6").

Is that actually so? Because a google search for '"Doctor Who" numbers" is thoroughly unhelpful. 194.80.32.9 23:49, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure it isn't just a code name. Governments and military are full of letter-number codes. Also, it isn't abnormal to pad the base-10 system with extra numbers. Look at hex. What is the big difference between 429(hat)6 and 429E6? It was just arbitrary that they decided to use ABCDEF for hex. Youth in Asia 01:05, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a running gag. If you wanted to get really philosophical about it, you could assume that once mankind started getting into regular official contact with alien races, they'd need to reach some kind agreement as to what numeric base to work in - we use decimal just because we learnt to count on our ten fingers, and it's fairly likely that other alien species would work in other bases. If you then assume that whatever the common base is has more than 10 digits, you need names for the new ones. Here on Earth, when we have such a base (like, for example, hexadecimal), we use letters, but there's no pressing argument as to why you couldn't use other random nouns, and indeed if you're working in some arbitrarily large base then you'd find you'd run out of letters (even if you borrowed from a few other alphabets), whereas the number of nouns is ridiculously large. For example, in The End of the World, a year five billion years in the future is numbered 5.5/Apple/26, suggesting that the base is chosen to be so large that a number of the order of 10^9 or 10^10 (no idea when they start counting the years, either) can be expressed in what seems to be about 5 or 6 "digits". As to whether the nouns chosen mean anything, I'd suggest not. Either they picked random nouns when they developed the new system, or they're the closest English translation available to whatever the original alien version was. Confusing Manifestation 01:55, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Children's Sonrg - Title and Album..

I'm looking for a song I remember from my childhood (70's / 80's) that I'd like to share with my 2 year old nephew. Unfortunately my mom no longer has the album and I only remember some of the lyrics. My mom thinks it was from a Christian children's album.

Here's what I remember:

"Oh Daddy Long Legs and Mama Short Arms lived in a wee house upon a bug farm, and every morning at quarter past six...."

There were also several verses with something along the lines of "doodely doodely do oh..."

The album also had a version of "On Top of Spaghetti" and a song that I think was called the "Ach-choo" song (basically the lyrics "Ach-choo, God Bless You" over and over again.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, Barb Bannstra

It's Howdy Doody time

What is the tune to which "It's Howdy Doody Time" was sung? The same tune was used in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to the words "A desert holiday/Let's pack the drag away/You bring the lunch and tea/I'll bring the ecstasy". —Angr 17:57, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Apparently it is called "It's Howdy Doody Time" and it was written by Edward Kean [4]. IrishGuy talk 22:00, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That link sort of implies he's just the lyricist of "It's Howdy Doody Time", i.e. he wrote the words but not the tune. The thing is, I have this nagging feeling the tune is much older and might come from an Italian opera or something along those lines. Up until a moment ago, our article La donna è mobile claimed that that aria is the tune of "It's Howdy Doody Time", but it isn't. —Angr 06:59, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

I found it! It's Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay, first performed in 1891. So I was right about the tune's being much older than the show, but not about its being Italian opera. —Angr 07:07, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

And the article Howdy Doody already says as much, and has since March. Boy, do I feel like an idiot. —Angr 07:11, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

How about a murder mystery game? They take a bit of setting up but they can be fun. Perhaps a 'challenge' of some form - Building a structure from paper and balloons that can hold a large amount of weight, this is something i've come across at 'training' sessions for business. You could look around the net for team-work games (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=safari&rls=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=teamwork+games&spell=1). Much of what is 'fun' for adults might transfer to children easily enough. You could make the quizzes more 'appealing' (and varied) by mimicking the setup of hit quiz shows like Who Wants to be a Millionaire or The Weakest Link. A collaborative story/getting them to write short group 'scenes' could be fun and would let the children be creative. Also perhaps some form of art/crafty thing. I have seen school groups setup a trading floor for fake stocks with fake news releases/investor news, which can be fun as it teaches children about investment but also in a fun way as they are playing with fake money to try use the news/data to turn a profit from trading. Again perhaps a little advanced for the age-range but might be fun. ny156uk 08:34, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you play "Weakest Link", omit the insults ("something tells me there aren't any branches in your family tree"), as kids and teens have fragile psyches that might be harmed by such insults. Also, to get more kids involved, you might want to go with team games, like Family Feud (you could do a survey first of the noncontestants on various kid-related questions, like "favorite song"). Song in La Quinta commercials

In the U.S., there've been a series of new commercials airing on TV for the La Quinta hotel chain. At the end, they have this obnoxious, happy sounding song... "La la la, la la la la, la la la la la la la laaaaa" would be the lyrics (I worked pretty hard to memorize them, too). Anybody know who made this song? Can't find it anywhere on the web. Thanks... 66.69.88.148 01:28, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This says "It is a song that was made for La Quinta.", but you take from youtube whatever you're willing to believe. You might double check at http://adtunes.com/. Corvus cornix 02:15, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blake Lewis software

Sometime this past American Idol season, Ryan Seacrest asked Blake (I think this was a viewer question) how he composed his remixes. In his response Blake mentioned a computer program. Does anyone recall what it was? --zenohockey 07:54, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Daddy Dear"

Does anyone have information about "Daddy Dear," an animated segment about the letter D that used to appear on Sesame Street? I'm wondering who designed the artwork and who wrote the lyrics. It's a really psychedelic sketch. There's a YouTube video if anyone is interested, but I don't think I'm supposed to link to it here. Thanks! Zagalejo 21:42, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can link it here, no problem. I have searched for the song you mentioned but apart from youtube links all I have found is a comment stating that there is plenty of composer information available on line... helpful stuff that. SGGH speak! 20:35, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gibson or Jibson?

My friend has a habit of pronouncing the name of Actor/Director Mel Gibson Mel Jibson. She says that her Australian friends laugh if she says Gibson. Which is correct, a hard or a soft G? Crisco 1492 06:49, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool site... as for the Gibson vs. Jibson thing, she's not the only Indonesian I've heard pronounce it incorrectly... sad how simple names can be butchered... I've spelled my own name for a waitress and she then asked: Apakah ada T di belangkan? (Is there a T at the end?) I've had my name changed by a clerk at the train station who thought that I left out a T... bites... sorry, just a personal pet peeve.Crisco 1492 15:48, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Because we don't know your name (and don't need to know it, :-)), how hard it bites is difficult to determine. Criscot? Tricot? Bielle 02:56, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What's that song?

I have a snippet from a contemporary rock song in my head, but I can't find the name of the song. The line (sung by a growly male vocalist) is "I'll fade away", then a violin (or multiple violins?) comes in for a few seconds. --zenohockey 20:45, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heaven Beside You single

Speaking of Alice in Chains, when did their single Heaven Beside You come out, 1995 or 1996? When I looked at the article, it was in the categories 1995 songs and 1996 singles, but the infobox said it was released in '95. Amazon seemed to indicate 1996, so I changed the infobox. But before I changed the infobox on Grind (song) accordingly (it has '95), I thought I'd better come here and confirm the year. So does anyone know for sure when the single was released? --zenohockey 05:05, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I figure it's because it was recorded and released (on the album Alice in Chains) in 1995, but the single was released in 1996...but I'm not positive. - Zepheus <ゼィフィアス> 19:10, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ranma 1/2 voice actor

In season five, is the guy voicing Ranma Saotome the same one who'd later voice Inuyasha? Did the manga-ka like him, or something? Thanks,

           Xanon.
Have you looked at Ranma ½ and Inuyasha? In particular, you didn't say whether you meant the Japanese voice actor, the English actor, or another language (you also didn't mention whether you meant the person voicing male or female Ranma, although since you said "guy" I guess it's safe to assume the former). Interestingly enough, both languages happen to share the same actor for the two characters - whether this is a coincidence is hard to say. As to your second question, the mangaka doesn't normally have much of an influence on the voice actors of the anime production unless they're also involved with the production team, but (a) it's quite possible they decided it would be easier to call someone back and ask them if they'd like to voice another of Takahashi's main characters than to run a whole new set of auditions, (b) even if they hadn't, it would have made it easier to pick someone with some established credentials that would make them suitable for the role, and that would count heavily in their favour, and (c) if you look at the credits for a number of different anime series, the same names tend to pop up on a regular basis, probably partially due to (a) and (b), and in some cases probably due to the size of the industry. Confusing Manifestation 03:58, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm going to assume the Japanese seiyuus in this case because the English ones probably have a lot less to do with the mangaka. Japanese voice actors often belong to groups as well, so the same company might hire the group again and get him to do the voices. And considering that he is one of the most prominent male seiyuus in Japan, he's a pretty obvious choice for the role. It'd be like, if you had to choice between casting Brad Pitt in a movie or a relatively unknown person, who would you cast? Actually, I seem to recall a rumor about Takahashi wanting to cast the same person in English as well, to mirror the Ranma-Inuyasha thing, but that might be just a rumor or my mind making up things. --Wirbelwindヴィルヴェルヴィント (talk) 22:00, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What was the name of that movie?

In the 1960s or late 1950s a science fiction movie was released featuring a mission to the Moon to defeat an enemy force which was operating a base there. The enemy were flying a spacecraft of the flying saucer type from which a crimson-coloured sphere emerged at times. The defending force landed upright rockets from which they deployed moon-buggies to attack the enemy base/saucer. On the journey to the Moon one of their crew turned saboteur. Future article: Tribute song

I am currently researching an article on original songs that pay tribute to pre-existing musical artists, e.g. "Raptori - Debi Gibson" (Deborah Gibson). The proposed Tribute song entry will be substantially different from the existing Cover version term, as the latter refers to a pre-existing song. Which WikiProject(s) is/are in the best position to coordinate research for the proposed Tribute song article? - B.C.Schmerker 14:53, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By tribute, do you mean just mentioning someone's name (ie: the brief mention of "So you're Brad Pitt" in that country song), or an actual tribute to a person(s) as in the Commodores' Nightshift? -- (¿ʇɐɥʍ) ʍɐuıɐʞ 15:03, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck but lists like this are frowned upon here Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_songs_containing_overt_references_to_real_musicians is a deletion discussion of something similar and http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-songs-containing-overt-references-to-real-musicians is what it looked like. meltBanana 21:19, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What I pictured approaches "Commodores - Nightshift," as another typical case; "John Wesley Harding - When the Beatles Hit America," "Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much," "Pixies - Make Believe," &c. all fall outside the scope of this proposal. As I understand things, "Make Believe" was intended for the girlfriend of one of the Pixies bandmembers (most likely Lovering) at the time of composition; but obsession does NOT equal admiration. The concept does not necessarily require mention of an example composition in the proposed article. - B.C.Schmerker 01:39, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, see Debbie Gibson for our article on her. StuRat 13:26, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. I've a beta rewrite in the works and am on the verge of deleting reference to the aforementioned Pixies song therefrom--"Make Believe" is, as a possible tribute song, doubtful, and I question the relevance thereof to the rewrite for that reason. "Elton John - Candle in the Wind" probably qualifies for the proposed Tribute song article, having been written as an epitaph to the late Norma Jean Dougherty, a.k.a. Marilyn Monroe; pre-existing does not necessarily mean living. - B.C.Schmerker 15:34, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And while we're on the topic of Elton John, don't forget Empty Garden, his tribute to John Lennon: [6]. StuRat 03:10, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. In reading the archive of List of songs containing overt references to real musicians on Answers.com, very few of the listed songs would actually qualify as examples for my proposed article. "Weird Al" Yankovic parodies hit songs all the time, and the vast majority of those parodies (e.g., "Achy Breaky Song," a re-lyric of "Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart") fall outside the scope of this article; but "Dare to Be Stupid," a Yankovic original song written as a tribute to DEVO, could be a valid example. Likewise for "ABC - When Smokey Sings," the chorus whereof was constructed around the Vamp riff (transposed to C from D) from "Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Tears of a Clown." The article I propose is an extended definition, including conditions specific to the tribute song. - B.C.Schmerker 05:54, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update: So far, searching for the origins of the tribute song has turned up only lists of tribute songs to various persons, places, &c., rather than anything definitive on the history of the art form. What help, if any, can I expect on the research? - B.C.Schmerker 06:14, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Metal Gear Solid 4 question

im wondering is Metal Gear Solid 4 the last game in the series because to me it seems like it is? does any1 have any information or rumours that it is or isn't? thx :D

It could be, but I think Hideo Kojima said that MGS2 would be the last in the series, then he said MGS3 would be the last, now he says MGS4 will be the last, its hard to know if this will actually be the final game in the series. --Surachit 07:48, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Try Gamefaqs. --Wirbelwindヴィルヴェルヴィント (talk) 22:02, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's the level with the buzzsaws on wires? I seem to remember that you need to use the feather and simply swoop underneath the regular exit. The secret exit is just beyond the regular one. There is another method, using Yoshi and the cape, where you drop off the final platform, using the cape to float slowly beneath the exit, and jump off Yoshi, to a point just behind the regular exit. I found the first method much more fun, although you need to judge the timing of your swooping correctly. slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 23:00, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I always just used the cape + yoshi to get under the end exit and jump up. It leads to the soda lake area, which I believe takes you to the star world in the middle of the lake. --frotht 04:06, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I remember this! Now I'm going to go play that game tonight. :) But yeah, swoop underneath the first level exit, then a dotted path appears to soda lake. 71.7.147.236 23:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

opera guy on tv competition

I remember that a few days ago (possibly last week) there was this guy on the news that sang some opera on a tv talent competition. The performance made national news. As tedious and time consuming as this is I still feel like I don't understand he reference question. I've browsed other artists he worked with and his name is there and credited as such but how do I link it to his page? Also I have discogs.com and musicbrainz as external sources (and while those aren't even updated, which means more work for me) the only other way to prove the work is to update the album covers, etc...How do I get the content box on the page...

Okay I'll stop there for right now. I've tried logging on to my talk but I still don't understand it plus my computer freezes when I try (Mac OSX user). HELP! I won't give up and I will keep trying but a lil help is appreciated.

In order to link something within Wikipedia, just enclose the words in double brackets. They look like this: [[ ]]. On the QWERTY keyboard, the brackets are over the ' key. The spelling within the brackets must be the same as the page title that you are linking to. If you'd like to use a different word or phrase for a link then you can pipe the link (see: WP:PIPE) which will look like this: [[Wikipedia|online encyclopedia]] and that will look like online encyclopedia. And finally, I'm on a Mac running OS X right now and I don't have any issues with it. It might be your system. Dismas|(talk) 01:49, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

lost in iceland (book marketing poster)

I saw a poster in a bookstore in iceland advertising the photo-book "Lost in Iceland". My daughter loved the poster and I thought I could find it for sale on the internet (the bookstore staff were all busy at the time and we were in a hurry). The bookstore was at the Geysir giftshop, and we live in the US. The poster is in landscape format, with about two-thirds showing the black coverpage of the book (just says Lost in Iceland), with the remaining third showing several shots from the book in contact-sheet style. A pretty nice design I thought.

Anyway, I've had no luck in finding the poster: I've left email for the photographer (Sigurgeir Sigurjónsson) [7] on his website no response. Also found the publisher's site [8] but it's in icelandic which I can't read.

I think this poster probably can't be found or bought, but since my daughter's birthday is coming up soon, I thought I'd ask here since I'm often surprised by the cleverness and ingenuity to be found in these pages. thanks for any help 68.221.39.66 11:48, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alec Baldwin's diet

I just saw watched a video on PETA's website where Alec narrates the indignities suffered by polutry, cattle and hogs. He especially emphasizes cruelty toward egg-laying hens and dairy cows. I will therefore assume Alec is a strict vegan. I ask the question once posed by Yoda: "How you get so big eating food of this kind?" Mr. Baldwin seems like a rather portly fellow. What is this guy eating if he forgoes steak, ham, cheese, eggs, etc?
