I have two requests for people coming here:

  • If you intend to revert personal attacks could you please use the {{subst:unsigned|user name|date}} template instead.
  • If you are here to complain about something I deleted could you please tell me the name of the article that you are talking about. If you do I will respond but if you don't I will ignore you.

Thanks.

175 done tonight (about), leaving 2200 in my list...

Should only be a few nights work, probably done by the time your back from your holiday.

More bugs fixed, and its faster!

1620 left (nearly 600 done today!) Reedy 21:03, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done some more bug fixing/"hacking". Means less manual movement needed =). Worth the effort IMHO. Down to 1300 Reedy 23:10, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Less than 1000!! Reedy 13:48, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Newspapers

Thank you for replying on YK Time's behalf. Your message was of great help!

Thanks also for the tip about possibly putting my book in the Gallery of the Midnight Sun. -YK Timestalk 23:53, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeater, do you happen to know the price for a newspaper (both NT and NU versions)? You seem VERY knowledgble about the North, so I've decided to ask you (to give YK Times a break).

(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 00:47, 11 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Thank you very much for your prompt answer again, CambridgeBayWeather! :-D

Bumped luggage as in lost or delayed? They have such problem in Yellowknife? I went to Mexico this past March, and the same thing happened. I had school the following day, but the bags came six days later. My teachers just excused my homework until the luggage (with my vacation homework and textbooks) came in.
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 15:39, 14 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
That sucks with the delayed baggage, but at least you managed to get on the flight (and you actually got your luggage later). Canadian North is a great airline with friendly people (I talked to three of the senior management people for my Yellowknife Trip). It ends up that I'm not flying with Canadian North (due to some issues), but I wished I had. It seems very friendly and superb. By the way, I happened to read your user page (which was a very good scavenger hunt). How and why did you decide to move to Cambridge Bay, NU? Won't you rather live someplace more populated and dense?
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 17:53, 14 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
I live in Orange, CA, which is a city of about 130,000 people an hour away from Los Angeles. My aunt lives in Yellowknife, but I can't imagine me having to live in the Canadian Arctic. Isn't everything like expensive (especially gasoline) and deserted?
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 16:02, 15 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
Yeah. Everything is more expensive with the transportation costs. One good thing I heard was that the Northwest Territories paid 3% less on groceries than the rest of Canada. It's very scenic up in the North (I'll see for myself in December), but it requires adapting in order to live up there (something you have already done quite well). By the way, is there a bandwidth limit on internet up in Cambridge Bay (in Yellowknife, the average plan allows 10 GB a month). Here in Orange, CA, we have unlimited bandwidth (not trying to run it in your face or anything).
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 20:01, 15 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
That's great to know. I'm just shocked how the major companies take advantage of you guys big time because you're such in an isolated, deserted place.
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 04:55, 17 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
That is so ridiculous! "Outside" of Canada? They should get real. At least things changed since NU became a territory. By the way, when you sign messages, what does "Have a gorilla" supposed to mean?
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 17:26, 17 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
Do you happen to know the cell phone provider(s) in Yellowknife? Verizon Wireless, my cell phone company in California, doesn't have any service throughout the Canadian North. I was wondering if they sell prepaid SIM cards for an unlocked cell phone (like they do in Vietnam). And yeah, I have never heard of BBC's The Goon Show ever before in my life.
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 21:34, 17 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Thank you. I'll look up the companies and see what they have to offer. By the way, this has always been in my head. How do the featured article (of the day) get chosen?

(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 03:11, 18 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Oh. I never knew such thing exists. Anyways, I'll leave you alone now and thanks for everything you have done for me. Take care!
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 15:32, 18 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
I talked to Jenn at ICE Wireless, a recommended company from you, and they can help me since it's a non-contract based company. I unlocked my cell phone from T-Mobile this morning using codes and information online. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I did a TON of research and I never came upon ICE Wireless. You are such a great help!
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 21:44, 18 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
Oh. I never knew Jenn was your daughter. I have to say that she is very kind, friendly, patient, and polite (hopefully she got those tratis from you). It will be my pleasure to meet her when I set up service for myself in Yellowknife. ;-)
(Rallybrendan2006 (talk) 14:47, 19 July 2008 (UTC))[reply]
If she got the traits all by her self, that is something you, as a father, should be very proud of.

Removing content

Hey there... in going back and looking at the history logs of several pages I updated, it appears you removed most of the links I added. Just wondering why? To my mind, the Q&As I added have value and fall into the neutral category, but maybe I simply don't understand the criteria for what should remain on the pages and what shouldn't. Why are newspaper articles seemingly ok but original content from my website not? Anyway, I'd definitely appreciate any insight you can provide. Thanks.

Sorry, just read the top of your page -- some of the articles you removed my content from include Kat Von D, Maritime (band), Mike Park, LA Ink (tv series).

Tookoolito

Hi CambridgeBay Weather -- I'm starting entries for Tookoolito and Ebierbing, and would be grateful if you'd stop by and have a look -- any corrections/changes/suggestions would be welcomed. In particular, Tookoolito was tagged with a Notability tag and if you agree it has met the criteria, I'd be grateful if you'd consider being the one to delete this tag. Cheers, Clevelander96 (talk) 15:50, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Our Barney friend again?

I noticed you restored the edits to the version before User:JohnLeoWalsh got to it. Based on that and his userpage, any thoughts on whether he might be User:Danieljuravsky, or possibly the guy who used to spam his soap-opera all over the refdesks??? Something about this user doesn't strike me right--the weird userpage, the Barney edits, the refusal to answer questions....it adds up to SOMETHING. Gladys J Cortez 20:34, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Survey request

Hi,
I need your help. I am working on a research project at Boston College, studying creation of medical information on Wikipedia. You are being contacted, because you have been identified as an important contributor to one or more articles.

Would you will be willing to answer a few questions about your experience? We've done considerable background research, but we would also like to gather the insight of the actual editors. Details about the project can be found at the user page of the project leader, geraldckane. Survey questions can be found at geraldckane/medsurvey. Your privacy and confidentiality will be strictly protected!

The questions should only take a few minutes. I hope you will be willing to complete the survey, as we do value your insight. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Professor Kane if you have any questions.

Thank You, BCeagle0312 (talk) 17:04, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reverts of user 66.65.108.174's edits

Pardon the interruption, and for going around the system on this one, but this is a slightly odd vandalism case that you have at least a little background with. 66.65.108.174 has made 75 or so edits mostly to kids' TV related articles, all of which seem to be subtle vandalism. You've reverted a number of his edits, including his last two. His modus operandi makes it difficult to get anyone over at WP:AIV to do anything (I've reported him at least three times, and the report has been allowed to go stale, or rejected with comments like "seems to have stopped") - he makes only a couple of edits at a time and then goes inactive for a day or so. The edits go back almost a month, so it's clear that he's got a static IP. If you've got a minute, please look into this a bit, and take whatever action you see fit. Thanks! Majorclanger (talk) 00:31, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. Since I've got a real-live admin on the line, I'm got another long-term subtle vandal that seems to have the folks over at AIV flummoxed, which I can't figure out - this IP has been blocked four times, including a three month vacation that just expired. The guy is considerably more prolific that 174 above - the block expired about an hour ago and the IP has been used for eight edits - five of which are almost certainly misinformation, three of which aren't at clear cut. It's all pretty subtle (date changes and the like) and nobody monitoring AIV seems to want to do anything about it. So if you could take a look at the culprit - 24.47.245.45, I'd appreciated it. And I promise to leave you alone - the missus wants to watch a movie, so I'm being pulled away from my Wiki addiction for a while! Majorclanger (talk) 01:12, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Somali Clan

Hello, thanks for cleaning up after me! Please can you tell me where to find out how to move a discussion page? Redheylin (talk) 22:36, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I misunderstood. You write "I also moved the page over to preserve the editing history." I cannot find how to do that on the How to Merge instructions. By the way = no thanks, I just put one out. Redheylin (talk) 22:42, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I fixed one redirect Somali clans but missed "tribes". I was following the "how to" rules, but it has been brought to my attention that histories can get lost. Am I meant to report it to the "fixes" page, or what? Redheylin (talk) 22:59, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help once again. Redheylin (talk) 23:19, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hate to say it but I really think the "Somali clan" article should have been merged and redirected to "Somali people." I'm basing my reasoning thusly: (Somali clan = Somali people) but (People in Somalia != Somali people). I've brought this up at Talk:Demographics of Somalia#Article merge. I really don't want to pull you into the discussion, but I am also concerned with the technical issue of un-merging the edit histories (if it's even possible). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:08, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Jose Fadul

Kindly refrain from thinking of deleting the article on Jose Fadul. Fadul may not be notable to some of you, but he is most certainly notable to us, alumni of Manila Science High School and of UP College of Education. His life is an inspiration to all those who have speech defects but have the spirit to excel and gain honor. I see no conflict of interest therein.PFlores3 (talk) 10:42, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I second the motion. Fadul was one of the few child prodigies recognized by the late Atty. Fernanda Balboa herself, the founder of Children's Museum and Library, Inc. (CMLI) MCLeander (talk) 10:49, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jose Fadul is someone humble that I do not know well. It is good that a Wiki article on him was written, perhaps by himself or someone using his surname for his or her Wiki username, I don't know. Please do not delete that article.JDGloria (talk) 11:31, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hoy!!! Sorry to cause the confusion guys. I'm User:Fadulj and was the one who created the article on Jose Fadul. I'm an American from San Diego, California vacationing in the Philippines. I was surprised to find a namesake, a Filipino Jose Fadul, whom I think and am glad to be notable, though we are not related (I'm of Lebanese descent). That is why I made a short Wiki article on him, after knowing what I thought were notable about him which I gathered from other websites. I didn't expect that other Wiki users would contribute to it, add so much to it, and even fight over it. Well, I don't care so much if the article on Jose Fadul gets deleted or not. As you see, if you Google you'll find at least three Jose A. Faduls all over the world who appear to be not related to each other. And there are other wikis other than Wikipedia. My apologies to PFlores3, MCLeander, JDGloria, and of course CambridgeBayWeather. Best,Fadulj (talk) 08:02, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Emirates Airline Subsidaries?

Hey CambridgeBayWeather, i just wanted to ask, do those subsidaries go in the Emirates Group article, or the Emirates Airline article. Because all those services, except for Emirates SkyCargo are run by Emirates Airline.(MoHasanie (talk) 21:14, 29 July 2008 (UTC)).[reply]

Demographics of Somalia

Hey CambridgeBayWeather, I have left a response on the article's talk page. Please let me know if you have read it. Middayexpress (talk) 22:03, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey CambridgeBayWeather, I do agree with you on that point, though I had erred on the side of caution, using the "proper" name of the school for the article. At the paper, our standard is to drop the 'Ecole' except for the two French-only schools in the NWT (Ecole Boreale and Ecole Alain St-Cyr). If you feel comfortable moving them, I would support it (though I will be out of town and without an internet connection for the next two weeks). Cheers, and thanks for noticing. -YK Timestalk 03:06, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

I have replied to your comments at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Thanks, Labcoat (talk) 11:15, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the recent communication. Is there any chance you might be able to assist with the Prince Philip article dispute? We really need someone uninvolved with senior moderator status to intervene - I'm not sure what the process is. As things stand, I'm very unhappy with the way important words have been removed from that article. I also note from User:PrinceOfCanada's User page that he/she has admitted that they're "...a staunch Monarchist" which I feel should at the very least should be taken into account when considering the possible motivations for their edits on that page. Thanks very much in advance. Labcoat (talk) 02:01, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hugh Loebner, Loebner Prize

Re: "Maverick" The term was applied to me by Dennis Duggan in his article "A Regular John, and Proud of It" as well as The Atlantic Monthly. These were in the pre-internet days, and adding links would be difficult. In fact, I do not believe that it was I who mentioned it. I actually contributed very little to the article, I did not start it, and have done very little editing of it. My major contribution was to correct my birth year - 1942, not 1941. Re: Conflict of Interest - Although mentioning Crown Industries in the articles is in my interest, it does not conflict with the interests of Wikipedia. I did not claim that Crown Industries was the best manufacturer of stanchions, etc." I merely mentioned my association with it. Re: Number of Patents - Why not search uspto.gov on my name. You will find the details of my patent information. I did not post all my patents to my website because (1) it would have been tedious to do so, and (2) some of them overlap - eg have terminal disclaimers, etc. One, for example, is a reissue. For what it's worth, I working on another at the present, and hope to have it approved in the fullness of time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Loebner (talkcontribs) 15:22, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Iqaluit - new heatvawe record

Hi,

On 28.07.2008 i corrected the heat record of town "Iqaluit" for July from 25,8 °C to 26,8°C since the heat event happened lately, check here:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story/2008/07/23/iqaluit-heat.html

or here

http://news.aol.ca/article/iqaluit-heat/288926/

Afterwards you changed back my correction due to unknown reason. Anyway, can you please reverse the feat back to 26,8 °C, since i really don't like seeing incorrect facts on wikipedia. To tell half a joke and half a truth, these incorrectnesses hurt my eyes :). BTW: I might change some outdated temparature records in other towns of the world if you don't mind in the future. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.58.20.209 (talk) 14:37, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nunavut island page errors

Hi Cambridge Bay! How's it going? I've got a problem and thought maybe you could help. I created additional Nunavut island articles today:

User:Truthanado noticed, however, that the coords weren't working as he got Fastcgi Protocol Error messages. I used atlas.nrcan.gc.ca as my resource so I'm not sure why the coords aren't working. Any thoughts before I delete the coords from these articles? --Rosiestep (talk) 01:27, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking into this. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:07, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the first one Wollaston Islands (Nunavut)‎, issue/problem is a Coord with a "template" parameter (display=title, format=dms, name=, ...) without a "coordinates" parameter (region:, type:, scale:, source:, ...) which causes a "malformed" URL ending in "_".
See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Fastcgi error

LeheckaG (talk) 07:33, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It would appear "obviously?" that someone made a change to ToolServer's geohack.php or another related ToolServer "script". I have not gotten into digging up who did what-when-where-how-why yet, for now I let WP:GEO know, posted a "workaround" there, and posted the response to Template talk:Coord. I am working on posting a response to Template talk:nrhp2 (so people are aware of a workaround, although there are probably a lot of other affected Geobox/Infobox and Coor(d) templates). Next will probably see what changed on ToolServer and get someone to revert or otherwise update it. LeheckaG (talk) 08:09, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure who changed what-where-when-how-why on ToolServer (again) but Coords without a region: appear to be working, I tested [[Kaigosuiyat Islands‎]]. I am still going to try to follow up with finding out the "root cause" on ToolServer. LeheckaG (talk) 09:48, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GeoGroupTemplate

For the general discussion, see:

With regard to {{GeoGroupTemplate}} "Map of all coordinates" on Category: pages. I had been using it on "List of" article pages which contained coordinates, and GeoGroupTemplate was recently updated to retrieve "Live" coordinates from articles within a Category.

  • "Live": So far, in my experience "Live" means if you update articles, then the "Map of all coordinates" updates within an hour or two. Its author(s) indicate that it should update within minutes, but cite several reasons when/why that might not happen (see link above).
  • "Sub-categories": I know that it does work for articles containing coordinates within a Category: I am not sure whether, when, or how "deep" it goes through sub-Category tree?
  • I was walking through "Alaska-related" Category "trees" and I realize that I added it to some Canadian categories (where Categories either overlap or confusion between them) I was just following the Category "tree". I have found it useful for the Alaska-related Categories.
  • Besides the "technical" (ToolServer) issues with it sometimes not working (due to too many requests) - sometimes I have had to either refresh or try it a few times. GeoGroupTemplate generally works or there is something "wrong" with the underlying articles. I have been going through the (Alaska) Categories with the GeoGroupTemplate and updating the articles when I find "bad" coordinates or a problem (rather than removing the GeoGroupTemplate). If you encounter one or more Canadian categories with a coordinates problem, if you post a list, I can help go through them to fix the underlying problems in the articles. I will take a look at those you posted on my Talk page. LeheckaG (talk) 06:58, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In response to your question, GeoGroupTemplate can go on either an article page (including a "List of ..." article) or a Category: page.
  • In the case of an article page (including "List of ..." articles). ToolServer.Org kmlexport script only looks for coordinates "within" a the corresponding article's page text (it does not go following WikiLinks to other related articles). So it only works when an article/page itself contains multiple coordinates, and not WikiLinks to other articles containing coordinates.
  • In contrast, on a Category: page GeoGroupTemplate looks for all coordinates contained within all articles within that Category: (from one of your replies - it apparently only goes "one level" deep - i.e. does not look through sub-categories? I am not sure - something I have not personally tested.)

Oops (about your Yukon airports "Russian" coordinates) Yes, Most of the Canada and the U.S. are "West" of Longitude 0 Greenwich England. In the Alaaka and Russian Aleutian / Bering Sea (Islands), there are a few coordinates which are farther West than Longitude 180 West, so are just under Longitude 180 East instead. I have run across several "odd" Alaska/Russian article coordinates where I am guessing the contributors copied from some "Russian" or other foreign language text and the degrees roughly "made sense" but the minutes were > 60 ? I am guessing the contributors misunderstood what they were reading. Likewise they had Latitude S instead of Latitude N (so several Alaska coordinates appeared in the South Pacific, I have found "bad" Alaskan coordinates either there or around Africa).
The "Fastcgi Protocol Error" is apparently an "inter-server performance" issue with (2) or more of the ToolServers. When "region:" is not supplied with an accurate/valid ISO 3166-1 (and preferrably -2, for instance CA-NU), then geohack ends up doing a region query to another server which takes too long, and the first server "times out" (i.e. expects a reply within ... seconds, when that did not happen an "alarm" terminates the query) and generates the error message. The moral of the story/workaround is to supply region:CA (or region:CA-NU ... if known) whenever possible. Someone submitted an appropriate bug report and is looking into the server performance issues. Details on the WP:GEO discussion/talk I posted. LeheckaG (talk) 11:07, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

showbc.com

Yo; saw your edits on various BC articles this morning re the showbc videos link....haven't actually watched those, but have used links from that site as refs for other pages (cant' remember what just now). Maybe they were rank spam, not sure; but showbc.com is I think connected to hellobc.com, which is the oh-so-cheesy domain name used by BC Tourism (at least they didnt' use www.thebestplaceonearth.com).....govt or govt-connected corporate p.r. types are busy all over wikipedia; hellobc.com and otehr sties like it are probably public-private-partnerships and not really publicly-owned, and with an overall agenda of spamvertisting; just wanted to comment on the origin of these links, it would help if i actually lookeed at what they were, huh? Later, time to make breakfast....Skookum1 (talk) 14:03, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

are you even supposed to protect pages without reaching consensus on an AN/I board? All I'm trying to do is put up this notice for Yamla, a good friend of my registered counterpart, so people don't continue to reach him. He isn't logging in, so he can't do it himself.

Moreover, this is no business of yours. I'm not vandalizing, and you're not supposed to arbitrarily undo changes unless I'm either vandalizing, or the statement is blatantly wrong. Neither of these are true.

Finally, and most importantly, it's no business of yours. Please focus your efforts on trying to improve wikipedia, and not just censoring other's comments. I realize anonymous IP's edits are suspect, and we're treated like second-class citizens, but that DOESN'T mean you have the right to interrupt the community side of wikipedia by constantly editing my communication with Yamla. If Yamla doesn't like my edits, then he'd revert them. This is between me and him. I don't understand why you're getting involved at all, unless it's to get your edit-count up or something. My edits are clearly not a problem, are not factually incorrect, defamatory, or otherwise vandalism in any way. Focus your efforts on improving wikipedia ARTICLES, instead of sabotaging communication on community pages.

Sorry about the Bala thing. Try Port Carling instead, see if that works better. Bearcat (talk) 21:17, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

user:Yamla

Is there a reason Yamla's userpage was blocked without so much as an AN/I hearing? The diffs don't show any vandalism... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.117.49.103 (talk) 06:05, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you restore this article? I would like to see what it has to say. Sincerely, Manhattan Samurai (talk) 11:51, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Announ.JPG doesn't have the wikipedia logo in it, so unless you desire to assert copyright, it can and should be a free image. {{GFDL}} would be the best IMO tag to use. MBisanz talk 16:54, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahmadiyya_Caliphate.2C_1908-present section

This is the section I am talking about. This is not correct so should be removed. The link you have sent me, you can see others have raised same concerns but not sure how it went un notice? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Islamhistory123 (talkcontribs) 00:02, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gawp?

I have three questions:

  • What does Gawp mean?
  • Why were my links removed?
  • Why did you tag my unanswered questions as resolved?

I am referring to the Wikisports post on the Wikiversity:Administrators' notice board. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.184.24.152 (talk) 12:24, 15 August 2008 (UTC) 79.184.40.241 (talk) 12:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
