Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a video game, developed by EA's Bright Light Studio and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released on June 30, 2009, to coincide with the film's new mid-2009 release date.[4]The game was released on Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Xbox 360, and Mobile platforms. [5]

Gameplay

Half-Blood Prince features the exploration of Hogwarts and casting spells on objects around the school, similar to its predecessor Order of the Phoenix [2]. The game will also include multiplayer games, classes, different times of day, Quidditch, Wizard Duels and Potion making [6]. Unlike its predecessor, The Marauder's Map is not included on the game. Instead, Harry calls on Nearly Headless Nick to show him around the school.

As Dumbledore mentions, the Dueling Club begins. Harry is allowed to duel freely with students and learn spells from them. The Gryffindor Dueling Club is located in the Great Hall, while the other houses are in other places such as the Paved Courtyard, Training Ground, and Transfiguration Courtyard.

As Harry attends Potions class, you can mix ingredients to make potions by using your Wii console or your analog stick. Harry must also join the Potions Club, which is in the Herbology classroom. 2

Platform-specific elements

The Wii version of the game will utilise the Wii Remote features as it did in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix video game.[5] which will include brewing potions[7], wizard dueling[7] and Quidditch [8]. However, it will not support the new Wii MotionPlus technology which is scheduled for release in the same month. The Nintendo DS version will include mini-games such as Gobstones and Exploding Snap[9]. The game will once again utilise the Stylus for wizard duels, potion making and quidditch[10]. The PlayStation 3 version will include Dualshock 3 vibration [11]. The PlayStation 2, PC and Xbox 360 versions will utilise the same functions as with the previous game.

Missing Features

EA could not include everything, including:

  • Several important characters have been cut including Fred and George Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, and Narcissa Malfoy is only seen in two cut-scenes with no dialouge.
  • At the start of the game, most of the castle is locked. As you progress, more areas are accessed. Instead of a Marauder's Map, Nearly Headless Nick shows you around the school.
  • Many old places in the castle are now missing such as Divination Class, Defence Against the Dark Arts Classroom & Office, The Prefect's Bathroom, Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, The Room of Rewards and the Trophy Room;New places such as Slughorn's Office, Dumbledore's Office, The Quidditch Pitch, and the Astronomy Tower are introduced. Also, there is a new bathroom in the Transfiguration Courtyard where Harry duels with Malfoy.

Plot

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore prepares Harry for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching as Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information.
