The list of Harry Potter cast members is a list of actors who voiced or portrayed characters appearing in the Harry Potter film series based on the book series by J. K. Rowling. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, who have played and will play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in all the films, were virtually unknown when they were cast. Complementing them on screen are some of the most renowned actors of the United Kingdom and Ireland, including Leslie Phillips, Helena Bonham Carter, David Bradley, John Cleese, Jim Broadbent, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Ralph Fiennes, Timothy Spall, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Griffiths, Robert Hardy, Miranda Richardson, Richard Harris, John Hurt, Jason Isaacs, Gemma Jones, Shirley Henderson, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Fiona Shaw, Maggie Smith, Helen McCrory, Emma Thompson, Miriam Margolyes, David Thewlis, Imelda Staunton, Julie Walters and Mark Williams. Seventeen actors have appeared as the same character in the first six films of the franchise, and many of these actors are expected to reappear in either of the upcoming two parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
In the books, a significant number of characters who have not appeared since some of the earlier novels reappear to fight to defend Hogwarts in the large, final battle.[1] David Yates, director of the final four Potter films, said, "I want to get them all back" for the final instalment of the series, referring to his desire to bring back as many actors who have appeared in the franchise as possible for the climactic battle sequence in the film.
Some well-known British actors who have not appeared in the series are asked in jest why they haven't yet been cast. In 2007, when Yates was directing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Bill Nighy said, "I joked with [Yates] that maybe now I wouldn't be the only actor in England who hadn't been in 'Harry Potter'". But "nobody called," Nighy added.[2] Ironically, in 2009, Nighy was cast as Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour in Deathly Hallows, which Yates is directing. Nighy said, "I am no longer the only English actor not to be in Harry Potter and I am very pleased."[3] Jude Law has quipped, "Nobody's asked me. I was a bit too old for Harry".[4] When a reporter compared Potions professor Horace Slughorn's obsession with famous names to the series' connection to "every notable British actor," Jim Broadbent, who plays Slughorn said, "Well, not every actor gets invited. I know some who are still waiting."[5]
The list is sorted by film and character, as some characters have been portrayed by multiple actors. The list also includes confirmed cast members for the seventh film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, due to be released in two parts in 2010 and 2011.
Key
- (v) indicates the actor or actress lent only his or her voice for his or her film character.
- (y) indicates the actor or actress portrayed the role in a flashback scene or when the character was young.
- (f) indicates the actor or actress did not appear in any new footage for the film; footage from an earlier film or films was used.
- A light grey cell (such as the one in the "Charity Burbage" row in the "Philosopher's Stone" column) indicates the character was not in the film adaptation.
- A dark grey cell (such as the one in the "Sybill Trelawney" row in the "Deathly Hallows" column) indicates the character does appear in the novel, but has not yet been cast, or if so noted, will not appear.
Cast
Notes
- A Often, minor child parts – in this case, Harry as an infant – are played by twins or triplets to avoid overworking the children.[96][97] The given names of each of the Saunders triplets are unknown; they were credited in the film as "Saunders triplets".
- B Michael Gambon replaced Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore from Prisoner of Azkaban onwards after Harris's death.[98]
- C Warwick Davis played Filius Flitwick in the first two films as an old dwarf-like man with gray hair. In preproduction for the third film, the producers told Davis there was no role for Flitwick, but that they would like to have him play somebody else, at least for a cameo. Davis played a much younger-looking man with black hair and a moustache who directed the choir at the Hogwarts Welcome Feast, and was credited as portraying "Wizard". During preproduction for the fourth film, director Mike Newell told Davis he wanted to keep his look from the last film, but make this the new look for Flitwick. Davis now considers the character he has played some relative of Flitwick,[27] though he is still credited as "Filius Flitwick".
- D A scene with Peeves was filmed for Philosopher's Stone, but ended up being cut from the theatrical version.[99][100]
- E Rob Knox was stabbed to death on 24 May 2008, before Half-Blood Prince was released.[101] The cast and crew of Half-Blood Prince wore white ribbons to the London premiere of the film in tribute to Knox.[102]
- F Crabbe is a recurring, minor character who appears in every book, and dies in a pivotal scene in Deathly Hallows. Jamie Waylett portrayed the character in the first six films. During production of the seventh film, Waylett pleaded guilty to charges of growing marijuana.[103] Josh Herdman, who plays Crabbe's best friend Goyle, said in August 2009 that Waylett would not be reprising his role and Herdman's character would die instead.[33]
- G The character played by Ryan Nelson was billed as "Slightly Creepy Boy" when a promotional photo of Dumbledore's Army was released.[104] Warner Bros. has not stated whether there is a correlation to a named character from the books.
