Frederick R. "Rick" Nicholls is a politician in Ontario, Canada who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2011 election.[1] He represents the electoral district of Chatham-Kent—Essex as a member of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party caucus.

Background

Rick Nicholls was born in Chatham-Kent, Ontario. He attended St. Clair College and the University of Windsor. His great-great-grandfather, Frederick George Rumball, was the mayor of London, Ontario from 1900-1901. Amongst his political heroes is former American President Ronald Reagan.[2]

Prior to entering politics, Nicholls was the founder of Nicholls Training Group, a training and development company. His clients included the Canadian Embassy to the United Nations, Canada Post and Ford Motor Company of Canada.[3]

Political career

In the provincial election of 2011, Nicholls defeated Liberal Paul Watson in the riding of Chatham-Kent—Essex. Chatham-Kent-Essex had been a traditional Liberal stronghold.

On October 26, 2011, Nicholls was named the Deputy Labour Critic for his party.[4] Nicholls was also a member of the Standing Committee on Estimates, which first uncovered the Oakville and Mississauga power plant scandal that eventually forced Dalton McGuinty to resign as Premier of Ontario in October 2012.[5]

Nicholls is an outspoken opponent of wind turbines. Citing the potential health hazards of wind turbines, he has called for a moratorium on their construction.[6]

Nicholls was also a leading voice in Ontario calling for a more thorough investigation into a massive fish kill incident along the shores of Lake Erie in early September 2012.[7] The American news station ABC interviewed Nicholls.[8] Other national and international media extensively covered Nicholls and the fish kill incident.[9][10]

The rookie MPP has also drawn attention to himself for a number of missteps he has made since taking office in 2011. Most recently, Nicholls was chastised in local media for releasing a "fake" press release.[11] In 2012, numerous media outlets took him to task for using sexist language in the Ontario Legislature. Nicholls, who made the slur against a private citizen, was admonished during Question Period by NDP House Leader Gilles Bisson who declared the comment "extremely offensive."[12][13] Last fall, Nicholls and two of his PC caucus colleagues, sponsored a pro-life press conference at Queen's Park.[14] Hudak refused to comment but PC Finance Critic Peter Shurmann was quickly dispatched to declare the matter of abortion "closed."
