Pokémon X and Y (ポケットモンスター X・Y, Poketto Monsutā Ekkusu & Wai) are upcoming role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. They are the first installments in the sixth generation of the main series of Pokémon games, and the first in the handheld main series of games to be completely rendered in polygonal 3D graphics.

The two games will be released worldwide on October 12, 2013, making them the first Nintendo-published retail games to have such a global simultaneous release in all key regions.

Gameplay

Like the many games before it, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y see players in the role of a Pokémon trainer who travels across one of the various regions of the setting, catching creatures known as Pokémon and using them to battle against other trainers and other wild Pokémon. Along with various Pokémon from previous generations, X and Y will introduce many new species of Pokémon. These include the three new starter Pokémon Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie; the mascot legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal;[1][2][3][4][5] and the new Eevee evolution Sylveon, which itself represents the new Fairy Pokémon type that is super effective against Dragon-type Pokémon.[6][7][8] New to the series are Mega Evolutions in which certain Pokémon, such as Mewtwo and Lucario, can temporarily evolve into more powerful forms.[9][10][11][12][13] Another change is that in addition to the choice between the new Pokémon Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie at the start of the game, players will also be able to choose amongst the original stater Pokémon from Pokémon Red and Blue; Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, at a later point.[14]

For the first time in the series, the entire game, including environments, character models, and battle sequences, are presented in fully polygonal 3D graphics. X and Y are also the first games in the main series to allow movement in all directions, including diagonally; the ability to interact with pieces of the environment such as benches was also noted by Official Nintendo Magazine.[15] Players now have the option of customizing their characters at the outset of the game, with multiple options for hair color and skintone available, as well as the option of changing the clothing the player character wears at later stages of the game.[16][17] Two new combat systems are also introduced in the games: Sky Battles are limited to Flying Pokémon (or those that can Levitate) to provide a greater challenge and Horde Encounters feature the player encountering a group of five Pokémon in the wild.[18][19][20] An additional mode called Pokémon-Amie allows players to interact with their Pokémon using the touchscreen and the 3DS' inner camera to strengthen the bond with their Pokémon.[21] Also introduced is the Super Training mini-game, allowing players to micromanage and improve a Pokémon's Effort Values.[22][23]

New features are added to the game's communication features: the Player Search System to meet with players around the world; the Holo Caster to talk to in-game characters also with StreetPass capability; the Battle Spot to play against players around the world; an updated Global Trade Station that allows the player to request Pokémon he or she has not yet encountered; the new Wonder Trade system to receive blind trades from anyone in the world; O Powers that can be used to affect one's own or another player's game abilities; Shout Outs to send messages to players; and Photo Spots to allow the player to take screenshots of his or her game to share on the Pokémon Global Link.[24] On December 25, 2013, Nintendo will also release the 3DS application Pokémon Bank which serves as an optional cloud storage service for up to 3,000 Pokémon, allowing players to transfer Pokémon between possible multiple versions of the games they may own, for an annual fee. This will also be bundled with a free Poké Transporter application which allows players to import Pokémon from Pokémon Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 into Pokémon Bank so they can download them to their X and Y games.[25][26]

Plot

The game takes place is the star-shaped Kalos Region (カロス地方, Karosu-chihō),[27] with Lumiose City (Miare City (ミアレシティ, Miare Shiti) in Japan) as its central city.[28] As with all previous Pokémon games, the player goes through a linear storyline where their character travels through the Kalos Region on the goal of becoming a Pokémon Master, challenging Gym Leaders and obtaining Badges to qualify to battle the Pokémon League's Elite Four and reigning Champion. Obstructing their way is the villainous Team Flare, whose goals have not yet been revealed.

Development

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y were first shown on January 8, 2013, by Nintendo in a Nintendo Direct 2013 presentation, along with the first gameplay footage. They will be the first games in the main series for the Nintendo 3DS and the first to be presented with full 3D graphics. Nintendo has announced plans for a worldwide release (the first in the series to release everywhere at the same time) on October 12, 2013.[1][2] Pokémon CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara has stated the look of the game's Kalos region is based on France, saying "France is one of the many countries that has a focus on the beauty, and beauty was one of the themes that we had with Pokémon X and Y, so we wanted to see how we could express that beauty in the games."[29][30]

On September 4, 2013, Nintendo and Game Freak announced the new Pokémon Bank 3DS application that will allow players to store up to 3000 of their Pokémon online and share them between copies of Pokémon X and Y for an annual fee (in Japan ¥500), to be released on December 25, 2013. The application will also be bundled with an application called Poké Transporter that will allow players to transfer Pokémon from Black, White, Black 2, or White 2 for free to the Pokémon Bank service, allowing them to download them for use in X and Y.[25][26]

Promotion

In promoting the game's new Mega Evolution feature, Mewtwo's Mega form was featured in the Japanese animated film, ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens, released in Japan on July 13, 2013.[31][32] The fifth season of the Pokémon anime series, which is based on X and y and is titled Pokémon XY, will begin airing in Japan from October 17, 2013.

A special Nintendo 3DS XL depicting Xerneas and Yveltal in blue or red colors will be released in North America on September 27, 2013 and in Japan and Europe on October 12, 2013. Japan will also receive a premium gold version depicting Xerneas on the front and Yveltal and the three starters on the back with either X or Y preinstalled.[33][34]
