The 39th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is a part of the annual film festival in Metro Manila, Philippines that will be held from December 25, 2013 until the first week of January, 2014. During the festival, no foreign films are shown in Philippine theaters in order to showcase locally produced films. This year, 15 entries were submitted but only 8 were chosen by the MMDA. Contrary to the tradition, the Enteng Kabisote, Panday, and Shake, Rattle & Roll films will not be joining this year's MMFF.

The MMFF was established in the year 1975, during which Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa (Water the Thirsty Earth with Dew) by Augusto Buenaventura won the best film award.
Official entries
On June 18, 2013, the 8 official entries were announced by MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino namely 10,000 Hours, Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy, Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel, Pagpag, Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir, My Super Kap, and My Little Bossings. Due to technical difficulties and other external factors, some entries dropped out of the competition, in which the MMDA committee pick from other entries, which failed to be shortlisted, to replace the withdrawn entry.
*Kulay Abo ang Langit was voted by the MMFF Screening Committee as replacement for My Super Kap on August 2, 2013. The film, which is technically No. 9 in the 15-picture line-up of MMFF finalists, has been retitled Pinoy Mutant Warriors by its producers. But due to significant changes in the original submitted filmography, Pinoy Mutant Warriors was not accepted.
*Boy Golden was picked as 7th official entry, replacing withdrawn entry My Super Kap as well as rejected entry, Kulay Abo ang Langit.
*Be Careful with My Heart: The Movie has withdrawn from the official list on September 12, 2013. Tight schedule of the cast and crew of Be Careful with My Heart on shooting the ongoing series has been stated as main reason.

In a January 2013 Interaskyon.com review, writer Jessica Zafra complained, "Speaking of standards, why do we bother to review the festival entries when most of them are rubbish? Because they're not supposed to be rubbish! Contrary to what you’ve been led to believe, 'entertainment' and 'commercial appeal' are not synonyms for 'garbage'. There are good commercial movies, and there are bad commercial movies. The bad outnumber the good because the studios think the viewers are idiots."

Background

The 38th Metro Manila Film Festival held in 2012 becomes the highest earning MMFF to date with 767 million pesos, 21% higher than that of 2011.[1][2] On a speech by Chairman Francis Tolentino of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority or MMDA, announcement was held on the creation of a new category, "Animation" under the "New Wave" will be launched on this year.[3] He stated, "...With the growing talent of pool animators both locally and abroad, it is high time that we recognize and showcase their potential to a broader audience...".[3] The Animahenasyon: Philippine Animation Festival will feature 5 animated films acts as Prelude to be shown in theater 1 week ahead of the mainstream films.[4] In line with the move, the MMFF has partnered with the Animation Council of the Philippines, the country’s lead organization in the promotion of the animation industry development.[5] But in the press conference held on the announcement of 8 official entries, Chairman Tolentino announced that the animation category will have to be postponed until the next festival.[6] He also announced the creation of the MMFF Review Committee which will assess and improve the rules, regulations, and implementing programs of the film festival.[3][7]

Additional notes
 • My Super Kap has withdrawn from the official list on July 24, 2013. Bong Revilla mentioned the conflicting schedules of the two of his cast members, Toni Gonzaga and Ai-Ai delas Alas as a reason for a foreseen delay of the film's special effects.[11]
 • Kulay Abo ang Langit was voted by the MMFF Screening Committee as replacement for My Super Kap on August 2, 2013. The film, which is technically No. 9 in the 15-picture line-up of MMFF finalists, has been retitled Pinoy Mutant Warriors by its producers.[12] But due to significant changes in the original submitted filmography, Pinoy Mutant Warriors was not accepted.
 • Boy Golden was picked as 7th official entry, replacing withdrawn entry My Super Kap as well as rejected entry, Kulay Abo ang Langit.
 • Be Careful with My Heart: The Movie has withdrawn from the official list on September 12, 2013. Tight schedule of the cast and crew of Be Careful with My Heart on shooting the ongoing series has been stated as main reason.[13][14]
 • Kaleidoscope World was announced as the 8th official entry to the film festival on September 25, 2013, replacing Be Careful with My Heart.[15]
